Author(s): Jelena Milenković-Vuković / Language(s): Bosnian,Serbian Issue: 3/2018

Abuse and neglect of children in the family is the most severe form of domestic violence and violence in general, due to the specificity of the biological, psychological and social characteristics of the child, as well as the relation of the child to possible criminal behavior. A family that should represent the ideal environment for the psychophysical, emotional and social development of the child, becomes the source of his neglect and abuse. The ill-treatment and neglect of children in the family is a social phenomenon that has always attracted the attention of the expert and scientific public, and has recently attracted the attention of domestic public opinion. Although numerous studies have shown that abuse and neglect of children in Serbia has increased, especially in the last 15 years, data on the extent of this phenomenon are very difficult to obtain, because the forms of this abuse are covered by the "family secret" and, in addition, statistical data are available are unreliable, since there is no single tracking and analysis of this phenomenon. This paper examines the forms of abuse and neglect of children, the prevalence of abuse and neglect, the characteristics of parents who abuse and neglect their children, the characteristics of child victims of abuse and neglect, and indicators of abuse and neglect of children. The aim of the research work is to search for statistical data on the phenomenological and etiological characteristics of abuse and neglect of children, with particular reference to crimes from different groups in which children are victims of abuse and neglect.

From the studies on the suicides of Polish seafarers

From the studies on the suicides of Polish seafarers

Author(s): Maciej Kijowski / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The work of seafarers on a seagoing ship involves numerous negative conditions which affect the physical and mental spheres of their functioning. The struggle with the environment, the inability to leave the ship, and the distance from the family and friends make sailors one of the professional groups at the highest risk of suicides. The author draws special attention to the social significance of seafarers’ suicides, which is related to the circumstances of committing these acts, their total number and their alarmingly high percentage among all causes of sailors’ deaths. Another advantage of the article is that it discusses the almost forgotten term “calenture”, unknown to modern scientific literature and probably related to the seafarers’ inclination to suicide. The article is based on an analysis of committed suicides and of the unclear results of research into them.

Laughter in the context of urban soundscapes

Laughter in the context of urban soundscapes

Author(s): Daria Vasileva / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Fifty people compiled diaries in which they described the sounds of their daily life in cities around the world. Of the 940 hours of observation there were 200 entries that referred to sounds of laughter, both live and recorded. The participants of the research always identified laughter sounds explicitly, unlike other urban sounds. The sound of laughter has a powerful cultural-symbolic superstructure. Learning how we use laughter, what we hear and how we react when someone laughs can help us to understand the key processes taking place in the urban space today. Laughter can at once attract and repel, signal danger and relieve social tension. It can lead equally to social agents’ inclusion and exclusion in the situation of interaction, and can largely determine the form and extent of their inclusion. A citizen’s interpretation of the sound of laughter depends directly on the media technologies which predominate in the urban environment and channel their cultural experience and sonic imagination.

Commentary piece

Commentary piece

Author(s): John POLIMENI / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

A prominent humour theory suggests that most jokes will violate a subjective moral principle. This paper explores the ramifications of Thomas Veatch’s social violations theory of humour, and hypothesizes that jokes tend to produce four distinct humour emotions, in a sequential manner. The final emotional response to a humorous stimulus involves an aesthetic judgement about the inference of the joke. Humour could therefore be a cognitive-emotional mechanism used to appraise social norms while laughter serves to signal appreciation for the social inferences associated with the joke. It is further proposed that the cognitive-emotional structure of humour implies an evolutionarily adaptive function.

Humour in popularisation:

Humour in popularisation:

Author(s): Giuseppina Scotto di Carlo / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2013

This paper investigates the role of humour in TED talks, which are popularising speeches aiming at knowledge dissemination. Through the analysis of humour used in Eugene Cordero’s 2012 talk ‘Improv Everywhere: A TED speaker’s worst nightmare’, Sebastian Wernicke’s ‘Lies, damned lies and statistics (about TED talks)’, and Julia Sweeney’s ‘It’s time for ‘The Talk’’, the paper analyses TED talks as an innovative tool of popularisation, which breaches the typical triangularisation ‘scientist-mediator-audience’, bringing scientists directly into contact with their audiences. Using classifications of humour theories described by Raskin (1985) and Attardo (1994), the paper analyses how humour in TED talks arises from a pleasant psychological shift of incongruity, when it is the “consequence of the discrepancy between two mental representations”; from a sense of superiority, when a person laughs about his/her own misfortunes or of others; or from a release reaction, when laughter is used to release tensions deriving from taboo topics, such as sexuality, politics, and religion. The talks show how humour is an endemic feature of this genre of popularising texts. In contrast with other forms of ‘canonical’ popularisation, these talks are not only delivered in a simple, clear, original, and relevant way, but also in a way that is enjoyable for the audience, which actively interacts with the speaker through humour.

Workforce Analytics: A Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach to Predict Job Change of Data Scientists

Workforce Analytics: A Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach to Predict Job Change of Data Scientists

Author(s): Sohini Sengupta,Sareeta Mahendra Mugde,Renuka Deshpande,Kimaya Potdar / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Today the total amount of data created, captured, and consumed in the world is increasing at a rapid rate, as digitally driven organizations continue to contribute to the ever- growing global data sphere. (Holst, Statista Report 2020). This data brings with it a plethora of opportunities for organizations across different sectors. Hence, their hiring outlook is shifting towards candidates who possess the abilities to decode data and generate actionable insights to gain a competitive advantage. A career in data science offers great scope and the demand for such candidates is expected to rise steeply. When companies hire for big data and data science roles, they often provide training. From an HR perspective, it is important to understand how many of them would work for the company in the future or how many look at the training with an upskilling perspective for new jobs. HR has the aim of reducing costs and time required to conduct trainings by designing courses aligning to the candidate’s interest and needs. In this paper, we explored the data based on features including demographics, education and prior experience of the candidates. We made use of machine learning algorithms, viz. Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, K Nearest-Neighbours Classifier, Decision Trees, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Gradient Descent Boosting, and XGBoost to predict whether a candidate will look for a new job or will stay and work for the company. Additionally, we investigate the factors that play an crucial role in a person’s decision to work for the company so that the HR teams can leverage this knowledge to effectively build training programmes and retain employees.

Community-Based Education Practices in Resettlement: Insights from the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership

Community-Based Education Practices in Resettlement: Insights from the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership

Author(s): Jared A Keyel / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2021

Education is a key component of the processes refugees undertake to (re)establish their lives in their new communities. In many cases too, displaced individuals have had interruptions in their education paths. In the United States context, nonprofit and community organizations provide essential services to supplement publicly funded resettlement and educational programs. The Blacksburg Refugee Partnership (BRP) has been filling service provision gaps in Southwest Virginia for a group of resettled refugee households since late 2016. BRP provides tutoring, English as a Second Language (ESL) training, and summer supplemental programming. Based upon an interview with BRP’s Education Coordinators and a survey of leaders and volunteers in September 2018, this article explores the organization’s work, connecting it to challenges and opportunities similar education initiatives encounter. I organize research results around three primary themes: the benefits of resettlement in a “college town” and the importance of leveraging university resources; the complexity of volunteer-led programming; and the need for comprehensive services to facilitate students’ education. I conclude by sketching the implications of this case for other educational initiatives serving refugees.

Author(s): Despina Vasileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2021

A study about perception of a page from a textbook of Bulgarian is presented in the article. Participants in the experiment are 30 students of age 15 to 19 from high schools in Sofia. The study is realized through an eye tracking system. For the purposes of the study 8 stimuli (textbook pages) were constructed, containing the components as follows: “text”, “image”, and “diagram”. In each stimulus the quantity of the components differs. All possible pairs in a combination in the left and in the right field of view are presented in the stimuli. The goal of the research is to be examined the fixation of the gaze on each elements of a textbook page. To assess the characteristic of the gaze was calculated the number of saccades in the left and right visual field of the slides. The data are organized in spreadsheets. Statistical analysis is performed in two-group t-test (two samples with different variances). Mean number of saccades, standard deviation, standard error, critical ratio are calculated.
