Author(s): Małgorzata Orłowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2016

The cultural capital is one of the most important variables determining the level of human security. This problem is analysed with the example of the Internet use. The asset of the analysis is the low interest in the issue in international literature to date, and (very importantly) a very large study sample, usually unavailable to a single researcher.

Praktyczny wymiar zagadnień związanych z oceną pewności źródeł oraz wiarygodności danych i informacji

Author(s): Józef Kozłowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 29/2023

The phases of preparation, analysis, integration, initial interpretation of data and intelligence are relatively widely described in the literature. Only the field of assessing the certainty of sources and the reliability of data and intelligence has not kept pace with the development of other elements in the domain of information operations. In view of the increasing intensity of activities carried out by potential adversaries, the methods, techniques and tools currently in use should be critically evaluated and their limitations identified, and attempts should be made to develop and implement new processes and procedures. Above all, the capacity to prepare and communicate increasingly accurate assessments of the certainty of sources and the reliability of data and information must be enhanced. Therefore, it is necessary to: quantify the accuracy of the information, prepare new procedures and software, study the degree of information redundancy, its completeness and level of diagnosticity. Acquisition and analytical apparatus staff must be aware of existing limitations and search for ways to solve problems. Such a search should not focus on one-size-fits-all methods, but on a pragmatic approach to each element.

Inštitút prázdneho kresla a globálna „kultúra opičenia sa“

Author(s): Anna Sámelová / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2024

The dramaturgy of an empty chair in a radio or television debate is a rare phenomenon in Slovakia. Despite this, Slovak journalism theorists and practitioners are increasingly encountering the scandalization of this symbolic editorial procedure by laymen. The interpretation of some politicians that an empty chair is censorship is particularly dangerous. The aim of this theoretical study is therefore to clarify what the empty chair institute is, when and how it can be applied, when and how it may not be applied, how it is related to the process of mediatization of the world and culture, why it has become an object of politicization, and how it is connected with the global “monkey-see-monkey-do-culture”.

Freedom of Expression in Privacy vs. Public Interest, a Case for Open Justice in Extended Reality

Freedom of Expression in Privacy vs. Public Interest, a Case for Open Justice in Extended Reality

Author(s): Adnan Hadziselimovic,Krzysztof Pijarski / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This paper continues the discussion on advanced jurisprudence, outlined in Algorithms, Ethics and Justice (Hadzi, 2022), where restorative justice was proposed for the mitigation of artificial intelligence (AI) crimes. Algorithms, Ethics and Justice proposed an alternative approach to the current legal system by looking into restorative justice for AI crimes, and how the ethics of care could be applied to AI technologies. The paper signifies an expanded version of Hadzi’s contribution to the Digital Research in Humanities and Art Conference (Hadzi, 2023), focusing on the notion of cyber offenses in extended reality (XR), given the rise of the metaverse (Anderson, Rainie, 2022; Chohan, 2022), and the future scenario of bio-metrical data of EEG capable headsets (Graham, 2022) being misused by rogue companies and/or criminals (Jaber, 2022; Nair et al., 2022; Zhao et al., 2022). The authors Begin by questioning the cyberspace – including the emerging metaverse – as public sphere, i.e. a social space in which democracy is being enacted to explore open justice in extended realities (XR), and then by continuing the discussion around the right to be forgotten and the freedom of the press versus privacy, through a comparative analysis between the legal situation in the EU and that of the USA. The paper concludes by warning against excessive state control while attempting to project a desirable scenario of multiple digital public spheres.

Vliv tempa a frázování čteného textu na porozumění

Author(s): Jana Vlčková-Mejvaldová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2023

The study investigates whether and to what extent speaking rate and phrasing affect the comprehension of a read text. Three groups of listeners were presented with three different versions ofa naturally read text. The versions were acquired naturally, i.e., without speech signal modification,in three ways: using normal speech rate and phrasing corresponding to the logical and syntactic structure of the text, using high speech rate with preserved logical phrasing, and, finally, using natural speech rate with distorted phrasing. The three recordings were presented to three comparable groups of respondents respectively. Their task was to determine whether the statements related to the text were true. It turned out that an increase in speech rate affected comprehension minimally, while chaotic phrasing caused a decrease in comprehension of up to 33%.

ALEXANDRU N. LAHOVARI: THE MOST POWERFUL ORATOR

ALEXANDRU N. LAHOVARI: THE MOST POWERFUL ORATOR

Author(s): Daniela Mihaela Samoilă / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2024

Alexandru Lahovari's success, as a politician and statesman, is undoubtedly due to his exceptional oratorical talent, along with his solid culture, his passionate nature, with his measure and spirit of justice, and, as with all great orators, his faith strong in the truth and justice of her words, which, as a rule, she managed to convey to the audience as well. Listening to Alexandru Lahovary when he spoke, you thought that there were two personalities in him: one that spoke to the mind; it was his mind. Another that went to the heart was his warm and sincere passion. This is why in his speech as in his deed he was both measured and vehement, both respectful and mocking, both logical and enthusiastic. His pressed word, united with the decisive gesture and the persuasive look, gave his reasoning even greater power. In the political order, there was no freedom that Lahovari did not defend, no national interest that he did not support. Going through any of Alexandru Lahovari's speeches, you get the interesting impression that he is (almost) always right and, transposing yourself in time, with an effort of imagination, over a century back, you are with him, you feel how he convinces you in most cases, even if you belong to another era and even if you have, perhaps, other political beliefs, what does this secret consist of? Precisely in Lahovari's art of oratory, comparable, we think, with that of your Mihail Kogălniceanu or that of Nicolae Titulescu. But let's see what his contemporaries thought about the great conservative politician.

THE STUDENT'S OPINION - DEMOCRACY IN THE PRESS

THE STUDENT'S OPINION - DEMOCRACY IN THE PRESS

Author(s): Valentina Andreea Popovici / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2024

Reading the political articles in the current press, we find that the journalistic style has undergone strong changes, mostly after the year 2000. The Romanian press of the last two decades contains articles in which there is an interference of styles, but also from a thematic point of view one can notice the intermingling of the news with the subjuctive interpretation pushed to the extreme with the pertinent or less pertinent opinion of the journalist who cannot refrain himself from metaphors as rich in nuances as possible when presenting either political or social events.

THE REFLECTION OF COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA IN THE PRESS AND FILM

THE REFLECTION OF COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA IN THE PRESS AND FILM

Author(s): Elena Oana Vlădulescu (Roșca) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2024

The main objective of the research will be the analysis of the political strategies carried out after the installation of communism in Romania, as well as their reflection as means of propaganda in the press and film. The representative magazines of the mentioned period represented an optimal propaganda tool, which in the opinion of the communists were intended to provide women with a role model that they longed for. At the same time, the subjects covered by the cinematographic productions were correlated with what would be useful at that time, as well as with the party policy. Therefore, exemplary characters, built according to the politics of the time, were those who dominated Romanian cinema and who had the role of staging subjects such as: the importance of collectivization, industrialization, the struggle of the new man, etc. We observe that the measures implemented by the communist regime have in mind elements such as gender equality, the "liberation of women" from the traditional family to make them available as a workforce, but also "grandiose industrialization".

THE RATIONALITY OF ADVERTISING. AN ANALYSIS OF RATIONAL, EMOTIONAL, INTEGRATIVE AND MECHANISTIC ADVERTISING

THE RATIONALITY OF ADVERTISING. AN ANALYSIS OF RATIONAL, EMOTIONAL, INTEGRATIVE AND MECHANISTIC ADVERTISING

Author(s): Dan-Laurențiu Cardaș-Răduța / Language(s): English Issue: 37/2024

Given that several opinions have emerged in the literature over time according to which advertising addresses the irrational side of the public, this study aims to demonstrate that there is rationality even in types of advertising that at first glance do not target the consumers' rationality: emotional, mechanistic and integrative advertising. The study also aims to identify what types of rationality exist in these types of advertising, with reference to the Weberian theory of rationality, from which it focuses on instrumental rationality and value rationality. The main results of the research show that beyond the emotional impact that advertising has, the public is looking for rational objectives to purchase a product. These objectives are linked to the audience's values and its need to adapt to the demands of society. The study also shows that all types of advertising can be rationalised, as audiences do not automatically react to 'irrational' messages but decide on the basis of reasoning. Advertisers know this game of rationality and irrationality and use it frequently.

Understanding as basic precondition of cross-cultural communication: psycholinguistic and socio-cultural aspects

Author(s): Ekaterina L. Kabakhidze,Dana Bartosh / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

The author of the article analyzes cross-cultural communication from the viewpoint of social philosophy defining invariant features of cross-cultural communication based on dialogue (Mikhail Bakhtin) and dialect nature of human communication. Theoretical description of the nature of cross-cultural communication is illustrated by live examples of the cultural conflicts borrowed from the history of the Russian diplomacy.
