DIALOG KULTUR NA PRZYKŁADZIE DWUDZIESTU ODSŁON MIĘDZYNARODOWEGO FESTIWALU MUZYKI SAKRALNEJ GAUDE MATER W CZĘSTOCHOWIE (1991)2010)

Author(s): Marcin T. Łukaszewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2014

The paper describes the phenomenon of multiculturalism at the International Festival ofSacred Music Gaude Mater in Częstochowa. The festival has been running since 1991. Itincludes a variety of artistic events, most of them sacred music concerts (Gregorian chant, early music, Orthodox, Polish music from all historical periods, and premieres). The festival also promotes the musical culture of Jasna Góra. The special feature of the festival is its multiculturalism involving the presentation of non-Christian sacred music. In the years 1991-2010, the festival featured Jewish, Muslim, Egyptian, and African music. The dialogue between cultures also facilitates connections between high and mass culture. This is accomplished through various combinations of gospel, jazz, pop elements with classical music. In addition, the attempts of dialogue between different cultures furnish a number of non-musical events, such as theatre performance, arts exhibitions, and conferences.

An examination of Clara Schumann’s musical salons and the research problems that occurred

An examination of Clara Schumann’s musical salons and the research problems that occurred

Author(s): Marlene Priller / Language(s): English Issue: 03 (30)/2016

Clara and Robert Schumann were connected very closely to the culture of the musical salons serving young and ambitious musicians and composers. Clara Schumann’s life is documented very well, but there is only a very small amount of literature dealing with her activities in the musical salon. This paper aims at providing an insight into the different circles Clara as well as her husband organised. The existent and non-existent source material is discussed and, by doing that, the current state of research on this subject is elaborated. Furthermore, this paper endeavours to point out the difficulties of research on this topic. That part is followed by a closer look at the characteristics of the private circles of the Schumanns during their years of marriage and the years after Robert Schumann’s death from 1856 to 1896.

Apart from the functional dimension, the pianist’s gesture, which cannot be compared to linguistic sign, is a medium of various meanings, therefore it plays an important role in the extraverbal process of communication between the pianist and the audience during the piano recital. It is stated that the agreement between pianists, as representatives of airtight world of classical music, and a crowd of aesthetically open-minded people, lies in the sphere of body and gesture. The author outlines some proposals on how to define a musical gesture and how to examine it. It is proved that the gesture is a powerful tool in the pianist's hands and that the arsenal of emotionally-communicative gestures during the piano performance process is enormous. Immensely important in the gestural context is coherence and naturalness. There exists a contradiction between the reflections derived from the modern performance practice and the common knowledge of the majority of piano teachers, caused by numerous 'historical misunderstandings'. A brief study of selected gestural cases (Franz Liszt, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Lang Lang, Martha Argerich, Yuja Wang, Waldemar Malicki) was done.

Od elektronicznej muzyki do elektronicznego obrazu. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television Nam June Paika

Od elektronicznej muzyki do elektronicznego obrazu. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television Nam June Paika

Author(s): Maryla Zając / Language(s): Polish Issue: 04 (31)/2016

Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is now considered to be the most influential creator in visual arts. He is said to be the first artist who presented television as a source of artistic experience. However, nowadays many people forget about his musical beginnings. Starting as a musician, he was inspired by, for example, John Cage, whose philosophical way of thinking had a positive impact on Paik’s future experiments with music and objects. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (1963, Wuppertal) was artist’s symbolic transfer from music to visual arts, presenting prepared pianos together with prepared TV’s. The article presents the exhibition as well as the environment created by Paik, showing the equality, importance and impact of two not so different kinds of art.

La lecture du folklore dans la dramaturgie moderniste bulgare et dans le théâtre symboliste européen

La lecture du folklore dans la dramaturgie moderniste bulgare et dans le théâtre symboliste européen

Author(s): Dina Mantcheva / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2017

Bulgarian Modernist drama is discussed in the context of the two most representative traditions in European Symbolist theatre – the Francophone and the Slavonic (Russian and Polish) ones – to point out its aesthetic similarities and specific originality. The analysis focuses on the principles underlying the selection and structuring of the two types of folklore plots (fairy tales and legends), used on all stages where idealistic plays have been produced. The study charts out the similar interpretations of the popular basis and its structural importance in all modes of writings. However, the national and social connotations in Bulgarian theatre, inspired by its own cultural context, differ from the Francophone metaphysical forms and mark out its relationship with the Russian and Polish versions. Finally, Bulgarian plays strengthen the eclecticism, characteristic of the Slavonic stage, and make use of some vanguard trends (parody, ambiguity, buffoonery), which transgress certain aesthetical postulates and announce the further evolution of the European stage tradition.

Документалното кино като поле на взаимното проникване на индивидуалните светове

Author(s): Irina Kitova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

A film idea and its realization are creating a potential field of relationships and interactions in which there are two worlds, the world of the cinema and the world of the individual experience, and every film is a reality.  An objective reality in documentary movies is reconstructed in a film reality and meets individual worlds of authors, characters and viewers through the ability of each person (including any spectator) to understand himself/herself, others and the world. This is an opportunity to see the world through the eyes of others, but also we turn our attention inward. The documentary approach implies much stronger impression of authenticity of the worlds, characters, stories, also feels strongly about the truth in the concrete form of the image and evaluates the artistic message as an existential standard.

Как социално ангажираното кино се „превърна“ в арткино

Author(s): Hristo Simeonov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The contemporary situation of mass cinema consumption and the development of popular film critic imposed a dilution of some of the classical concepts such as socially engaged cinema and art cinema. If a film tells a social story and is shot in a naturalistic way, with main characters that come from the poor stratum, featuring non-professional or infamous actors – there is a big chance for this film to be defined as “art cinema” or as a replica of the films of the Dardenne brothers, who are now among the most noticeable socially engaged directors. Pop culture characterizes each film, that hasn’t been created for commercial purpose, as an “art film”. This widespread distinction automatically splits the audience, according to its primal preferences and takes away its chance for a new and different experience. Both of the sides keep a distance from each other, but in the end the lost is for the films themselves, stuck into the frames of the vague “art film” concept – that’s how they are deprived from audience that wouldn’t identity with this concept.

Театралновъзпитателни акценти при прилагането на театралноинтерпретаторските дейности в методическата практика

Author(s): Margarita Aleksandrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

This article is a part of a monographic research, dedicated to the methodological aspects of theatrical activities with children and students. In it are discussed problems related to the theatrical interpretation activities widely used in the methodological practice with children in preschool and students in primary school age.The author substantiates the theory that when performing these activities in the literature teaching discourse, their theatrical specifics should be preserved. Dwu(wielo)języczny teatr w zglobelizowanym kontekście brytyjskim, czyli o różnych stylach dramatu migracyjno-transkulturowego

Author(s): Elwira Grossman / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

Focusing on selected bi(multi)lingual plays recently performed in the UK, the essay deals with the broader theme of intercultural communication and Polish migrants’ contribution to the local target culture. Grossman examines the possibility of creating a new transcultural form of theatre as an artistic means of facilitating mutual understanding and intercultural experiences. She suggests replacing the question of artistic merit by the shows’ function in reinforcing intercultural dialogue. The performances discussed are shown not only to strengthen the migrants’ integration but also to secure their feeling of emotional and cosmopolitan belonging to a globalized world without undermining their sense of human dignity and their belief in social equality.

Nowi „podporządkowani” w Wielkiej Brytanii. Środkowoeuropejski imigrant i jego filmowa personifikacja

Author(s): Cristina-Eva Sandru / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

Post-Cold-War global events have pushed the hitherto shadowy figure of the migrant centre-stage: she has become the embodiment of a contrasting ideological landscape in which unprecedented levels of mobility wage daily battle with renewed anxieties about the ‘stranger within’ and the invading ‘Other’ from outside. In a post-1989 European context, this mobility has translated into successive waves of immigration from East-Central Europe to the West, which have shaped debates on integration, human rights, citizenship, cultural diversity and national identity. The article looks at contemporary cinematic and television productions that problematize the impact of this phenomenon in Britain, with particular focus on Channel 4’s three-part series The Romanians Are Coming (2015) and Ken Loach’s hybrid docu-drama It’s a Free World, 2007.

Obraz krytyczny (obraz krytyki)

Author(s): Georges Didi-Huberman / Language(s): Polish Issue: 5/2016

The anthropological image of criticism (the image of the individual filtering truth from untruth) focuses on the power and meaning of the gesture, which seems more essential than merely ‘conceptual’ philosophical categories. Negative dialectics proposes a new definition of criticism: in view of the catastrophes of the twentieth century we need a vision of criticism that makes it possible to voice our despair and to create a ‘sad science’ in the place of Nietzsche’s ‘gay science’. To make this possible we must draw on the imagination and the image, for it is images that are brittle enough to elude the totalizing power of conceptualization and at the same time strong enough to become agents of criticism.

Publiczne konstruowanie historii. Przeszłość w prawicowej ikonografii

Author(s): Magdalena Saryusz-Wolska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 6/2016

Saryusz-Wolska analyses covers of conservative weekly magazines to examine contemporary Polish right-wing iconography. Focusing on historical motifs, she highlights the mechanisms behind the construction of ‘us’ and ‘them’ or ‘enemies’ and ‘friends’ in visual discourses. Drawing on voices from both politics and the media, these right-wingers call attention to perceived threats – such as Europe, Germany, Russia, or refugees. The magazine covers studied here mirror those ‘threats’ by drawing on a simplistic and emotional symbolism. The European Union is likened to Nazism, Angela Merkel to Hitler. We also see collages that draw on historical iconography but in a contemporary context, such as refugees forcing Poland’s borders in the place of Wehrmacht soldiers. Thus the iconography of the right creates simplistic parallels and suggests false analogies.

MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY OF INSTITUTIONAL ARCHIVES?

MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY OF INSTITUTIONAL ARCHIVES?

Author(s): Gábor Palkó / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

In his book entitled What is media archaeology Jussi Parikka suggests that it is possible to outline and develop a ‘hardcore’ media archaeology not only of the hard drive and software but their official use as a database, as information management systems as well. But is it possible at all to give a media archaeological account of the formal-institutional digital media practices, to provide a deep and material media archaeology of, say, a scholarly text archive as TextGrid or Deutsches Textarchiv? In my paper I try to check the ability of Parikka’s argument to answer these questions.

A LOW TE(A)CH APPROACH TO DIGITAL HUMANITIES

Author(s): Liviu Pop / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

Technological fatigue is spreading due to the increased arrays of technological branches and the rapid pace of development. Keeping up with the latest and newest might prove not only difficult and tiring, but also not necessarily recommended to beginners in digital humanities. A more “back to the basis” approach might be more useful for students that don’t have technical backgrounds.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DATA VISUALIZATION: TEACHING ART HISTORY THROUGH TIMELINES

THE IMPORTANCE OF DATA VISUALIZATION: TEACHING ART HISTORY THROUGH TIMELINES

Author(s): Voica Puşcaşiu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

This research wishes to consider the venerable, but relatively marginal use of timelines as means of visualizing coexisting historical events and figures with special emphasis on Art History, a domain where it loses many of its inherent faults and manages to functional. The use of digital tools in humanities research is on the rise, yeilding interesting results as the timelines are now able to take on new forms. The benefits are thus increased and this chronological representation complements the traditional and established method, especially when it comes to teaching a subject that contains such ample amounts of data.

EXIST DB OR SAXON/C IN PHP. A COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO APPROACHES FOR XSLT 2.0 BASED WEBSITES

XML and XSLT are very popular technologies among Digital Humanists. However, when it comes to deploying an XSLT 2.0 processor into a website infrastructure some difficulties arrise. This paper discusses two possible approaches for doing XSLT 2.0 transformations on the fly on a Web (Application) Server: Saxon as a PHP extension and Saxon within the popular XML database eXist. The conclusion shows, that both solutions have their pros and cons. In the end, however, the PHP solution wins.
