Vai mākslai ir uzdevums? Valsts pasūtījums vs radoša brīvība

Author(s): Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla / Language(s): Latvian Issue: 1/2014

This article outlines several trajectories in art sociology in respect of the issue of the artist and a piece of art. What is the status of an artist and self-awareness within the relations of social context: in the realisation of the social life of a piece of art? Applied theories have been chosen to discuss the public space in search of an answer to the question: whether art represents the state procurement or the artist is a free and creative personality in a democratic society? Another question is as follows: Does art have a task? During the last decade several pieces of art depicting harsh reality have been created in Latvia in the manner of social criticism. In the new social system society is not only searching for criticism, but is also longing for art that represents social integrity and identity.

Естрадната песен и нейните критици

Author(s): Rosemary Statelova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2018

The subject of the report is the created mass of Bulgarian popular songs between the 1950s and 1990s. With a view to the comprehensiveness of the subject, the large number of such songs (several thousand) was reduced to the sum of songs which were awarded at the International Festival for Popular Music “Golden Orpheus”. The second subject of the material is the contemporary musical critique at that time, which accompanied the events of the Festival. The issue in which the author is interested is the prevalence of sharp criticism in the materials toward the Festival’s song production, made from the position of one “critique in general”. Referring to the analysis of the specific phenomenon “compositional critique”, which the German musicologist Carl Dahlhaus suggests at approximately the same time (the 1970s), the author draws the conclusion about the inadequacy of the musical critique which denies in most cases the value of the schlager music, presented at the Festival “Golden Orpheus”.

Образите на св. Трифон в православното изкуство по българските земи. Функционална характеристика

Author(s): Ivanka Gergova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

St Tryphon is not among the most popular saints in Bulgarian lands, but his representation abounds in variants. He is depicted with various attributes such as a cross and a palm branch, even with a spear like a martyr; with a pruning hook and occasionally, with a vine shoot with a bunch of grapes as the patron saint of viticulture; and seldom, with medical instruments for in the painter’s manuals (hermeneia) he is grouped with saints healers. Representations of the saint, especially from the eighteenth century onward are found in the entire country of what is now Bulgaria, and mostly, in the vine-growing regions. The article deals with the different functional characteristics of St Tryphon’s imagery. The main is the calendric one, as his icons ought to be placed for veneration at the churches celebrating his feast day (1 February). The calendric function was highlighted in the cases when his image was combined with other saints, celebrated about his day or with the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, which falls on 2 February. Some of the representations are a function of individual piety. Icons of the saint were commissioned and paid for by believers named Tryphon, who hoped to find salvation by donating the icon to the church. Such occurrences may be witnessed on icons kept at home, where the representations of St Tryphon were apparently due to family members with the same name, who offered individual prayers for protection to their saintly namesake. Some of the representations have both a prayerful and a representative function pertaining to the collective veneration of St Tryphon by members of certain guilds or persons who had certain occupations, whose patron saint he was. Very important was the ritual function of St Tryphon’s representations. Several icons where the saint is represented together with SS Julian and Eustatius, were intended for the ritual performed to protect fields, vineyards and gardens from insects and pests as prescribed in the prayer book. Аn icon from Plovdiv has a very rare function, as seen in its inscription: it depicts three saints with St Tryphon among them, whose relics were walled in the altar of the church during the consecration ceremony. Presumably, at such monasteries as those of Bachkovo and Rila, where relics of St Tryphon are kept, the numerous representations of the saint were related to the cult and veneration of his relics.

Александър Фол – казаното, премълчаното

Author(s): Maya Avramova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 24/2019

… Тhat when it comes to history, she – I remind you – is a muse named Clio and that this Clio has the majestic nobility to be Human Knowledge (Фол А. 1997. История на българските земи в древността до края на III в. пр. Хр. София, 1997:296/ Fol, Al. History of Bulgarian territory in Antiquity to the end of III BC. Sofia, 1997: 296). …what History holds back becomes fatefully more important than what has been said or even written by her (Fol, Al. Thracian Culture: The Said, The Held Back. Sofia, 1998: 8). The last monographs Man in the Types of Time, Man in the Types of Space, and Orphica Magica I by Master Fol, are a demonstration of his creation/participation/presence in the drama produced by Clio. This participation/presence is expressed in writing in the director’s notebook of the Drama which is not doomed to fall off the stage due to absence of co-participating viewers, albeit in a chamber ensemble. In it, the notebook, step by step, has been developed in detail the dramaturgical setting of the acting characters and their behaviour in the different scenes of the ritual and the requisites employed to communicate with God in order to attain the essence of immortality. The author Alexander Fol introduces the main characters of the play and the logical accents in the nine languages and the references they use. These languages do not describe. They display the image, the name, the number, the tone, the matter, the shape, the colour, the movement and the function according to the model of Herodotus’ and of the Samothracian tetrad (Fol, Al. Orphica Magica I. Sofia, 2005: 51). After reading these Books/Dramas, the question arises compulsively: What has been said is already a fact, but what have you held back, Master, and why? Have you closed the door for the uninitiated or is there still a narrow crack?

Further Remarks on Transfiguration in Shivta

Author(s): Emma Maayan Fanar / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The present paper explores the remnants of the Transfiguration scene, the wall painting in the South Church at Shivta, a Byzantine settlement in the Negev Desert which ceased to exist sometime in the eighth or ninth century. The study reveals long-forgotten early Byzantine iconography, which survived in the remote provincial desert settlement but testifies to strong ties with post-iconoclastic iconography of the scene.

Leafing through Manuscripts Backwards: Doodles, Marginal Drawings, and the Organic Life of Otrantine Libraries

Author(s): Barbara Crostini / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

Looking at the marginal drawings in some manuscripts from the region of Otranto, in Southern Italy, this paper presents their choice of subjects, both animal and human, and tells the story of their interconnectedness. Echoes between similar designs strengthen the hypothesis that these manuscripts belonged to or gravitated around the theological school at Aradeo, whether their contents were sacred or classical texts. These drawings reveal the pious inclinations of these medieval readers, together with their skills at sketching both portraits and fantastic beasts.

Златовръх като природен код на Космическата планина

Author(s): Vasil Markov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 24/2019

The paper is dedicated to one of the largest megalithic sanctuaries in the Balkans. The Rocky Peak of Mount Zlatovrh near Prilep in the Republic of Northern Macedonia is sacred. Archaeological monuments testify to millennial cult continuity: the megalithic sanctuary dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age is inherited from the architectural temple of Apollo. Later, an early Christian basilica was built here, and in the Middle Ages it was inherited from the Treskavec Monastery. Intangible cultural heritage also testifies to a particularly important cult site with millennial history.

SANAT SİYASET TOPLUM ETKİLEŞİMLERİ

Author(s): Gültekin Akengin / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 33/2019

The work of art gives information about the social economic and cultural structure in the period it exists. It lists the social economic and political elements in the society and tries to examine the chronological works of art. Within social structure, the social and economic behaviors that exist in certain periods determine the rules of art and the formation of images, the style and composition characteristics. Besides the emotional nature of art, there is also an intellectual ideological aspect. Art transforms not only the emotions of people but also their thoughts into the images. In this study, evaluations about the relationship between art and politics are summarized. With the transition to the multiparty period in our country, the more effective understandability of the democratic understanding by the society and the political, economic and social realistic conception of art has been examined.
