EMANCIPATION, DUTY AND THE ARTISTIC SUBJECT

Author(s): Bojana Matejić / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2016

In the ’Third Sketch for a Manifesto of Affirmationist Art’ (’Troisiéme esquisse d’une manifeste de l’ affirmationnisme’), Badiou brings together the concepts of Universality, the Senses and Duty in Art. The author will try to reassess the concept of Duty in Badiou’s conception of Affirmationist Art, examining the problems of, 1. How is an Emancipatory Art possible in the context of the anti-humanist condition? and 2. What is the ontological and epistemological status of an in-humanity as a fundamental presupposition of human emancipation in Art? It will be argued that the artistic formalization of the Subject(s) – which is ‘impersonal and singular’, as Badiou asserts – would not be possible without any human participation in the process of subjectification towards human emancipation. The author will demonstrate how it is possible to think the concept of Duty in the aesthetic realm, on the basis of Badiou’s presupposition of the Subjective Universality of Art and Župančić’s reading of Lacanian theory.

RAZMATRANJE REPRESIVNE TOLERANCIJE

Author(s): Maroje Višić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 3/2016

Author tries to re-examine Marcuse’s essay Repressive tolerance in the context of Marcuse’s works and genealogy of thought. First, author addresses critique and tries to demonstrate its fallacy by showing critics’ unfamiliarity with Marcuse’s early writings. Author then tries to demonstrate the continuity between Repressive tolerance and Marcuse’s early writings such as “concrete philosophy” and critical theory. Lastly, author tries to demonstrate twofold importance of the essay: first in an attempt of avoiding fascism and secondly, as Marcuse’s indication toward new society.

FIKCIONALNI ENTITETI KAO ARTEFAKTI: NEKI PROBLEMI TEORIJE EJMI TOMASON

Author(s): Andrej Jandrić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2016

Amie Thomasson has developed a theory of fictional entities, according to which they exist as contingent abstract objects. In her view, fictional characters are cultural artifacts just as the works of fiction they feature in. They are doubly dependent objects: for their becoming they depend on creative intentional acts of their author, and for maintaining their existence they depend on preservation of a copy of any fictional work they appear in. Thomasson claims that her theory has the advantage of vindicating the common beliefs about fictional entities embodied in the study, evaluation and interpretation of literature. However, I argue that, under this theory of fictional entities, no account of reference of fictional singular terms − neither the descriptive, nor the causal, nor Thomasson’s preferred hybrid account − can accommodate all the aspects of our literary practices.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ENCAPSULATION OF VISUAL PERCEPTION FOR PHILOSOPHY OF MIND AND AESTHETIC ANALYSIS

Author(s): Vladimir J. Konečni / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

This Opinion Article highlights three sets of important implications of the very recent work by C. Firestone and B. Scholl on the encapsulation of visual perception: (a) methodological implications, especially with regard to experimental areas of cognitive science, such as cognitive social psychology; (h) implications of interest to philosophers of mind, some of whose more extravagant recent claims have been based on the assumption of "top-down" cognitive effects on perception; and (c) implications that challenge some recent work in philosophical and psychological aesthetics regarding art expertise, as well as defend the logic of A. Danto's theorizing from attacks that are based on the assumption of "top-down- cognitive effects.

AUTENTIČNOST I FUNDAMENTALNA ONTOLOGIJA

Author(s): Milan Brdar / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2015

What does Heidegger’s discussion of authenticity of Dasein, as presented in Sein und Zeit (1927), contribute to the completion of his program of fundamental ontology (aiming at the sense of being as such)? Aiming to answer to this question the author examines the way authenticity is constructed. The author specifically emphasizes the fact that the authenticity is completed within what is given in „the One“ („das Man“), in the process by which Dasein realizes within its way of being his own specification or concretization. Furthermore Heidegger claims, on the one hand, that it is not possible to rank authenticity and inauthenticity as being something of “higher” and “lower” order, and, on the other hand, that the world has a transcendental status with primary role of the One (das Man). Therefore Dasein understands all from the world, builds its understanding by taking it from the world and constructing out of it its own specification. This has two important consequences: the first is the realization that authenticity has no significance for fundamental ontology, for the understanding of the Being that the Dasein has acquired is equally valuable whether it is authentic or not; and the second is that authenticity is of negligible significance, for the understanding that the Dasein has is obtained from the One, and because the world has a transcendental status, hence it is a priori as far as the understanding of all Being goes. Why then Heidegger deals with authenticity? Reason is to be found not in preparing work for fundamental onthology but in Heidegger’s anticartesianism. As he sketched the concept of Dasein in contrast to Descartes’ subject, he created a problem for himself. Just as Descartes had a problem with finding the way to bring the subject to the world, Heidegger is facing a problem: How can the Dasein, as something integrated into the world as beingin-the-world and being-with-Others, come to itself? Finding the answer to this question does not engage fundamental ontology, for it must be obtained as a precondition for creating the starting point for it. Finally, the author discusses a problem that emerges from this perspective: What is the source of Heidegger’s turn (Kehre)? Emphasized as reasons are Heidegger’s anthropocentrism and remnants of the subject-object relation. Anthropocentrism, however, was already overcomed in SuZ with the thesis about the trancendentalty of the world and by de-centering the subject given the primacy of understanding as contained in the One. As for the subject-object relation, it was overcome through the very discussion of authenticity on the basis of the thesis that the Dasein and the world are in original unity. It follows, then, that Heidegger did not offer the real reasons for his turn, hence the question remains: Why Heidegger did not remain satisfied with those results? That remains to be uncovered by further analyses of his philosophy!

LAMENT NAD 33. ROĐENDANOM REČNIKA TEHNOLOGIJE I 21. STOLEĆEM

Author(s): Zoran Petrović Piroćanac / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 3/2015

In the era of Tito’s Yugoslavia hardly was there a comparable intellectual undertaking in Serbia that exploded so powerfully and authentically in 1981. Dictionary was also a premiere intellectual critic – a herald of the coming era of humanity that would be marked with an acceleration of civilization, dehumanization of technology in direct function of the pacification of the world masses and their submission to aggressive voraciousness of the big corporations in the time of wars for resources. Clairvoyance of the authors of Dictionary was lonely in that time, and did not get, in the East, nor in the West, any intellectual support, despite the strength of their protreptic messages, but it was, contrariwise, exposed to unreasonable governmental-party retribution.

EPISTEMOLOŠKI I ETIČKI PROBLEMI ERE INFORMACIJA I CITIRANJA "VIKIPEDIJE"

Author(s): Milica Vučurović N. / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2015

Wikipedia as an internet phenomenon enjoys a great popularity, even in the academic community, thus rising a legitimate question, does it present a valid source of information, but even more important question is: What are the implications of the epistemological and ethical sense behind the conformism of the accelerating and shallow search due to inflation of information, where Wikipedia is just one of the representatives quick sources of information which most often is applied. From the ethical side, Wikipedia's politics is implicitly committed to utilitarianism, and institutional morale and professions are considered redundant, while the hypothesis that we have tried to defend is the opposite and based on models that support the scientific responsibility of the authors and publishers. But even in utilitarian approach, classical methods of philosophy of science more effective, partly because in the era of information epistemological justification of the reliability of the evidence and the chain of references to new data and milions of publications is much more important than the quality of information as such.

FREGEOVSKO REŠENJE PARADOKSA ANALIZE I KRITERIJUM ZA RAZGRANIČENJE MISLI

Author(s): Filip Čukljević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2015

At the beginning of this essay a formulation of the paradox of analysis is presented. Standard Fregean solution of this paradox is then displayed, as well as the problems that this solution faces. Afterwords, another solution of the paradox of analysis is shown, which can be found in Frege's late writings. It will be demonstrated that this solution, at least at first sight, is incompatible with the criterion of difference of thoughts that is standardly attributed to Frege. In the end, a possible solution to this incompatibility is suggested.

DVOSTRUKI KARAKTER STVORENOG BIĆA KOD T. AKVINSKOG

Author(s): Predrag Milidrag / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2014

In now classical article from 1958 dedicated to twofold character of Aquinas’s concept of being Joseph Owens clearly formulates the two complementary features of esse that function in Aquinas’s metaphysics, namely 1) being understood in the terms of essence, form or nature, as essential and 2) being understood as accidental, not in predicamental meaning but as something above and beyond the essence of the thing. Firmly relying on whole Owens’s work, I will try to outline the ways of understanding the meanings of esse in Aquinas, because a) two character of being are two complementary and integral components of created being, b) which are really different.

NEKONTEKSTUALISTIČKA I KONTEKSTUALISTIČKA VERZIJA TEORIJE RELEVANTNIH ALTERNATIVA KAO MOGUĆA REŠENJA SKEPTIČKOG PARADOKSA

Author(s): Milica Smajević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 3/2014

This paper analyzes the solution to the skeptical paradox provided by theory of relevant alternatives. The paper examines and compares two versions of this solution: the noncontextualist, invariantist version, whose creator and representative is Fred Dretske, and contextualist, variantist version, defended by Keith DeRose and Stewart Cohen. By analyzing invariantist and variantist solution, the author comes to the conclusion that, although both solutions have positive and negative implications, Dretske`s theory of relevant alternatives offers more convincing explanation and solution to the skeptical paradox.

A FORMAL SOLUTION TO A PARADOX OF DEMOCRACY

Author(s): Vlasta Sikimić / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2014

Richard Wollheim pointed out a paradox which he claims relates to democracy. We argue that this paradox is not exclusively related to democracy but actually arises whenever there is a conflict between personal preferences and preferences of accepted authorities. Furthermore, we provide a formal explanation of how one can rationally “accept” or “switch to” the preference of the authority she personally accepts and still have different preferences than the authority in question. Our formal solution is based on dynamic epistemic logic, while our philosophical explanation is inspired by Kant’s practical philosophy. On the other hand, we point out to what we believe to be the real exclusive restriction in democratic elections and we argue that, unlike Wollheim’s paradox, this restriction is a special feature of democracy.

OPŠTA VOLJA I TEOREMA POROTE

Author(s): Ivan Matić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2014

The subject of this paper is the description and analysis of some elements of JeanJacques Rousseau’s political theory, primarily his understanding of the process of democratic decision-making, aimed at reaching decisions that are in accordance with the principle of the general will. The first part of the paper analyses Rousseau’s understanding of the general will and the system of political decision-making. The second part compares Rousseau’s and Condorcet’s understanding of politics, further analysing Rousseau’s theory through certain elements of Condorcet’s jury theorem, based on the works of B. Grofman, S. Feld, D. Estlund and J. Waldron. The third part focuses on interpretations and critiques of Rousseau’s political theory by authors B. Barry and R. Dagger.

KVAJNOVA BIHEJVIORISTIČKA TEORIJA JEZIKA

Author(s): Aleksandra Zorić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2014

Within Quine’s philosophy, behaviorism is most present in the language learning context, both in children’s learning their native language and in translating an unknown language. It was directed against mentalistic semantics and referential theories of meaning. We will focus the examination of Quine’s behaviorism on the thesis of indeterminacy of translation, since there we will find all the elements necessary for further analysis. We will try to explicate the content of the thesis of indeterminacy of translation and point out the key problems which it faces. We will show exactly what kind of behaviorism Quine is defending and to what degree is his theory of language a successful alternative to mentalistic theories of meaning.

DA LI JE REGULATIVNA KONTROLA NUŽNA ZA PRIPISIVANJE MORALNE ODGOVORNOSTI?

Author(s): Marko Perić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2014

Libertarianist concept of free will is based on the principle of alternate possibilities – standpoint which presupposes that an agent has moral responsibility only if, in the given circumstances, he could have done otherwise. The author of this paper tries to review this key principle of libertarianism, and to determine whether the access to alternate possibilities represents necessary or sufficient cause for the assessment of moral responsibility, or neither of that. Finaly, based on the consideration of famous Frankfurt’s and Austin-style examples, in this paper is defended a sort of compatibilism, and the main advantages of that kind of free will concept over libertarianism are emphasized.

O pandemiji COVID-19 kroz pojam »iznimke« iz političke teologije Carla Schmitta

Author(s): Mirko Vlk / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 02/170/2023

In many ways, questionable epidemiological measures by which the authorities restricted civic and private life during the COVID-19 pandemic have challenged many implied notions of the inviolability of citizens’ rights and freedoms, as well as obedience to state authority. It is a problem of the incommensurability between freedom and law seen through the conflict between personal rights and the demands of the common good. This article examines how a state of emergency, such as a pandemic, affects the perception of the legitimacy of the State. In this, it relies on some key concepts from Carl Schmitt’s political theology, such as the “exception”, “the sociology of legal concepts”, the “nature of sovereignty”, the formal criterion of the political as a specific way of thinking, and acting and “stasiological” nature of the political.

John Rawls i sloboda političkog govora Slučaj Trump vs. Twitter

Author(s): Marita Brčić Kuljiš / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/171/2023

Free political speech – understood as (1) the right to publicly criticize the government, (2) the right to represent theories and ideologies that are contrary to the ruling one, (3) the right to advocate political and institutional changes, etc. – is the speech that enables a fundamental distinction between democratic and non-democratic systems. As part of the discussions on free political speech, the discussions related to the very content of the freedom of political speech that incites rebellion against the political order are particularly important; they advocate racism, hate speech or, for example, the disclosure of state secrets. In this context, we will open a discussion about the freedom of political speech in Rawls’s political liberalism with special emphasis on the idea of the public reason, and so that the discussion does not remain at the level of theoretical analysis, we will analyze Rawls’s understanding of the freedom of political speech additionally through the case of Trump vs. Twitter.

Ima li u odgoju mjesta za ljubav? Vuk-Pavlovićeva kritika Maxa Schelera

Ima li u odgoju mjesta za ljubav? Vuk-Pavlovićeva kritika Maxa Schelera

Author(s): Tomislav Dretar,Ivana Zagorac / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/171/2023

In his most significant work in the field of philosophy of education, Personhood and Education (1932), Vuk-Pavlović criticizes Schelerʼs claim that love cannot be an educational principle. According to Vuk-Pavlović, this claim is based on Schelerʼs two misconceptions: the first is related to Schelerʼs misunderstanding of education, and the second to his misunderstanding of love. In this text, we examine aspects of Vuk-Pavlovićʼs criticism and ask a broader question about the potentials and limits of love in education. When defining the concept of love, Scheler indeed opposes it to education, which for him implies changing the object of education. In this sense, education is an attempt to change the person being raised. On the other hand, according to Scheler, love means accepting the loved one without trying to change him. Therefore, the purpose of love is not to transform the loved object. However, through a genuine act of love, Scheler claims, change can occur as the appearance of higher values. Schelerʼs criticism of education is based on the understanding of education in the negative sense of imposing external values, where the individuality and value potential of the one being educated is not recognized. With regard to the aforementioned conception of love, one could theorize about a different type of education, which implies love in the sense of the development of one’s self.

San o genocidu. Foucaultovo uvođenje biopolitike

San o genocidu. Foucaultovo uvođenje biopolitike

Author(s): Branko Romčević / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/171/2023

In this paper, we discuss Foucault’s formulation of the notions of biopolitics and biopower against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic and the public reaction to it. For this purpose, we first identify his body of work relevant to the issue of biopolitics, since this issue – unlike the subject areas represented in Foucault’s earlier work – has not been the subject of a separate study. We narrow the focus to the period between 1974 and 1976, when he wrote five crucial texts for understanding biopolitics. The final one – “Right of Death and Power over Life”, the only one with biopolitics as the sole subject – provides what could be understood as Foucault’s definitive interpretation of the genesis and position of biopolitics in modern technologies of power. In the second part of the paper, we analyze the conceptual structure of biopower and the position of discipline and biopolitics within this structure. We then turn to Foucault’s final determination of biopolitics as thanatopolitics to raise the question of whether this whole perspective is dystopian. We find that it is not, because this perspective depends on Foucault’s understanding of power relations, according to which resistance is primary and power is derived. Finally, we argue that his conceptualization of biopolitics cannot be used to justify any of today’s antibiopolitical tendencies.
