Dwa bale z przesłaniem moralnym (Bułhakow i Goethe)

An article presents a subject of ball in literature. There is undertaken an effort to analyze two balls: Walpurgis Night from Faustus by Johan Wolfgang Goethe and Grand Devil’s Ball from The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Author of the article shortly discusses genesis of the two balls, the sources of inspiration and symbolic significance. There is also stressed that both writers, Bulgakov and Goethe, by their work, wanted to settle accounts with cruelty: Goethe with cruelty of Middle Ages, Bulgakov with cruelty of Russia, from past time to Stalin’s Soviet Russia. Moreover, to illustrate the subject, author quoted unique fragments of Faustus, which were not included in the final version of the book.

Hopeless Romantics: Reality Versus Imagination in Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim

Although Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1856) and Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim (1900) are highly distinct novels in many respects, they are strikingly similar in the way they portray their protagonists. Both Emma Bovary and Lord Jim are hopeless romantics with a major tendency to set up highly unrealistic dream worlds for themselves. Both novels are widely interpreted as seriously critical of their protagonists, whose wide capacity for imagination eventually causes their ruin. This paper acknowledges the validity of this reading but argues further that these novels have a highly ambivalent approach towards the dichotomy between reality and imagination. The paper first looks at the similar characterization of the protagonists in both novels. It then proceeds to an analysis of the distance between the narrator and the protagonist in each novel in order to demonstrate the undecidedness marking the narrators’ attitude towards the protagonists. In doing all this the paper aims to show how both novels leave the problem of reality versus imagination unresolved, pointing perhaps to the possibility of a third alternative involving the reconciliation of these opposing forces.

У нашем претходном раду објављеном у последњем броју Зборника за књижевност и језик Матице српске писали смо опширније о преписци Ивана В. Лалића и Чарлса Симића. Овом приликом треба само напоменути да је та преписка трајала од 1969. до 1994. године, т. ј. и до смрти Ивана В. Лалића 26. јуна 1996; међутим, ништа из тих последњих година није сачувано. Целокупна преписка садржи око 100 писама различите дужине, куцаних на писаћој машини или писаних руком. Сва писма су до децембра 1972. године на енглеском језику, а пошто се Лалић приликом сусрета са Симићем у лето 1972. године уверио да он сасвим добро говори српски, сва остала Лалићева писма до краја су са неkолико изузетака на српском језику.

Han Yonğ Un(한용운)’un Şiirlerinde “Sevgiliyâr(Nim-님)” Kavrami Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

Han Yon-un, who lived between 1879 and 1944, was a Japanese imperialism period poet, a Buddhist monk and a nationalist activist. When we look at the poet's poems in general, it is different from the poets of the period. According to the philosophy of Buddhism, with the information provided by Han Yong as a monk, the society must first be freed before it can reach Nirvana. Han, himself, will be enlightened after the society in which he lives in has gotten liberty. So, from a different point of view, the main theme of his poems is Buddhism and Freedom. The concept of “lover (nim-님)” in his poems differs from that of the period’s poets. For example, Gim So Vol (1902-1934), one of the poets of the same period, also, wrote poems based on the concept of the lover. However, while the love that Han has left will surely return to him someday, Gim's dear never returns in his poems. In all Han's poems, spirituality and hope are dominant. When his poems are read in a simple way, it is possible to see the disappearance of something important and the suffering of the desperate hope of regaining it. If we read through the poems more deeply, we can perceive that they reach a superior level, by deeply understanding the state of the nation, by combining deep religious experience and a clear artistic feeling. This is why his poems can be seen as love songs by young people, greetings by religious people, and can be read by nationalists as a password that translates fervent emotions into national independence. In this study, we tried to examine the concept of "lover" which Han used as an image through several poems.

Dishonesty and the Cost of Playing with Others’ Feelings in Anthony Trollope’s “The Way We Live Now”

The Victorian Period, beginning in 1837 and ending in 1901, is a period when British Imperial develops and expands with an unprecedented speed. This period brings England- the first industrialized country in the world- to the highest level of develeopment. During this period, rural based life styles change into urban based economy and modern life which results in increase in wealth. Cities experience rapid growth, life styles of people differentiate, the landscape changes and massive production replaces agricultural production. Despite the prosperity and optimism in this period, some difficulties associated with the rapid industrialization emerge. Unemployment, poverty and competitive desire for social security appear causing restlessness among the members of the British society. The authors of this period from Charles Dickens to Elizabeth Gaskel and Anthony Trollope handle the issues of Victorian period and keep a critical eye on the matters changing the structure of the community. The aim of his study is to reflect the effects of rapid industrialization through Anthony Trollope’s view. In his novel titled The Way We Live Now he presents the introduction of materaliasm characterized by a ‘’great financier’’ and the leakage of dishonesty- as the financial power- into economical, religious, social and political institutes of British Community is analyzed. This study, displays the excessive interest of both the institutes and individuals to dishonesty at the same time proves that financial benefits result in frustration. Additionally, the presentation of the cost of playing with others’ feelings and the significance of love and moral values are handled.

RAFAŁ MARCELI BLÜTH AS A CONRAD SCHOLAR

The aim of the present article is to present the achievements of Rafał Marceli Blüth (1891-1939) in the field of Conrad scholarship. During the period between the First and Second World Wars, Blüth was a prominent Catholic intellectual and—along with Prof. Józef Ujejski and the well-known writer Maria Dąbrowska—was one of Poland’s foremost Conrad critics. As well as interpreting Conrad’s novels, Blüth researched the writer’s biography, particularly with regard to the role played by family tradition in the Polish eastern borderlands. He also put forward a detailed interpretation of the factors which might have influenced Conrad’s decision to leave Poland while he was still in his teens. Blüth’s greatest achievements as a literary critic include interpretations of novels such as Victory, The Rover and Nostromo, an attempt to classify the main characters of Conrad’s novels and a study comparing Conrad’s writing and view of the world with those of Dostoevsky.

It is important to stress that Tolstoy’s and Conrad’s texts are to be understood to include not only literary, and thus verbal, texts but also elements of other media, such as music, theatre and visual arts. It should be noted that for Conrad music was also one of the arts that he greatly appreciated. Though Conrad’s main concern was to make us “see,” he was also concerned with making us “hear.” The use of music to accompany sexual desire, frustration and violence is a technique often used by the writer. Likewise, music had an enormous infl uence on Tolstoy. He was fascinated with its power, just as with the power of sexuality, beauty and war. His favourite composer was Chopin, but he also appreciated Mozart, Haydn, Weber, and Beethoven. In The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories Tolstoy expresses his complex and controversial views on marriage and sexuality, focussing on his protagonist Pozdnyshev and his wife, who performs Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata with a spirited violinist Trukhachevskii. The obsessive nature of Pozdnyshev’s jealousy is nowhere more obvious than in the sexual power he ascribes to music, and particularly to the initial part of the presto of Beethoven’s sonata.

Bathhouses as Sites of Protest: Rebellious Bodies in the Arts of Early Modern Iran

Bathhouses have a strong presence in Iranian folklore and Persian literature. In parallel with literature, there are illustrations in which the topic of bathhouses is exhibited. This paper focuses on a 16th century Persian miniature painting in which the location of a public bathhouse is used as a place of occurrence of a homosexual love story. On the one hand, bathhouses as places of “purification”, and, on the other hand, corporeal bodies as agency of tactile experience create a novel dialectic between the space and its inhabitants. In an atypical study of the spatial organisation of bathhouses in the Safavid period Iran (1501-1736), the paper argues that architecture at the beginning of Iran’s modern era, not only questions the normative configurations of space, but also starts to object to the solid foundations of existing religious/societal norms.

"He was a savage who had some imagination,” Voltaire noted of William Shakespeare in a letter in 1765, foreshadowing his country’s tumultuous relationship not only with his works, but also with what is probably the most infamous aspect of his style—the bawdy puns. By analyzing two of Shakespeare's ribald wordplay as they appear in six renditions of Romeo and Juliet, the article aims to highlight how early French translators too sometimes interfered with them, for reasons ranging from perceived untranslatability, through their purported non-Shakespearean origin, to they allegedly being faults of the playwright’s time or Shakespeare himself.

In recent decades, African American identity has been explored through the theory of cultural trauma. This theory implies that the trauma which a certain community has experienced and which is kept alive in the collective memory through literature and arts, strongly influences their present and future identity. For African Americans, the theory of cultural trauma treats slavery as a trauma which permanently marked their identity. This paper analyzes the role of the novel The Underground Railroad (2016) by Colson Whitehead in maintaining the cultural trauma of slavery through Whitehead’s exploration of key elements of African American female identity.

“THE THIN DELIGHTS OF MOONSHINE AND ROMANCE”. Romance, Tourism, and Realism in Hawthorne’s „The Marble Faun”

Hawthorne’s involvement with the logic of the tourism of his day is a key aspect of his development as a fiction writer. Starting from a discussion of the early sketch “My Visit to Niagara” the article argues that the discourse of tourism, with its protocols and practices, is for Hawthorne a fertile breeding ground and conceptual framework for the elaboration of a new rationale and a new aesthetic for the fiction writing he calls “romance.” It then explores how tourism resonates in the romance which takes it as its central thematic concern: „The Marble Faun”. Hawthorne’s last completed long work of fiction represents a moment of artistic and personal crisis for the author, who finds his notion of romance writing caught in a sort of double bind created by the touristic nature of his stay in Italy. As the plot of the novel suggests, in his efforts to extricate himself from the situation, Hawthorne, envisioned and experimented with a new kind of writing that led him to revise and alter radically the romance form he had previously elaborated in favor of a much more realistic style of fiction.

Najwyższa nauka Da xue 大學 — próba interpretacji tekstu w duchu wczesnego konfucjanizmu

The article contains translation of classical Chinese text Greatest Learning Da Xue 大學 and the interpretation of important terms such as de 德 and gewu 格物. Da Xue is a part of ancient Chinese texts Liji 禮記 but the reinterpretation of the text became later a basis of neo-confucian philosophy. I argue that Da Xue is a pragmatic manual for an individual who firstly wants to cultivate himself and being cultivated is able to change the world into confucian utopia. Hence the phrase gewu does not have a meaning of “investigating things” in order to understand li 理 but “understanding the order of things that come”.

The article examines an interpretation possibility to read the structure of the Book of Job as a drama structure. It shows that some of the apparent paradoxes and contradictions in the text can be understood as an inner logic of a drama. The seeming incoherence of narrative Prolog and Job's later statements can be easily reconciled by following through the dramatic cause-effect sequences and seeing the events as happening in permanently changing present. The dramatic approach enables to see the meeting between God and Satan as an unsuccessfully attempt to make a bet. Deprived from omniscient narrator’s perspective, the drama shows various attitudes, without pointing directly which is the best one. Full of paradoxes and contradictory statements, the main hero’s style can be compared with a modern stream of consciousness. The culminating point of the drama shows a durable change in Jobs posture and leads to surprising changes on a metalinguistic level.

The User is Offline – Disconnection from the Real World within the Hyperreality of the Cyberpunk Novel Moxyland by Lauren Beukes

This paper attempts to show a correlation between the notions of the spectacle and hyperreality and Lauren Beukes' novel Moxyland by analyzing the aforementioned within the context of the cyberpunk genre and dystopian traits. In addition, the paper sheds light on disembodiment and alienation. The data is analyzed in terms of the content and specific examples taken from the novel. The notion of the spectacle was the guiding line through which other topics have surfaced in the composition. The ideas presented in subsequent paragraphs all refer back to the main idea, namely the spectacle and hyperreality. The aim is to interpret and contextualize the previously mentioned phenomena of the spectacle through a close reading of the text and provide a window into pressing questions of the contemporary society. After a brief introduction, the paper provides a short overview of the term and the genre of cyberpunk while referring to excerpts from the novel. It neatly connects to the idea of alienation as one of the traits of the genre which in turn brings about the characteristics of dystopia. Then, the paper moves on to the main idea of the spectacle and its interconnectedness with hyperreality. Throughout, excerpts from the novel underpin the notions and ideas presented using the words of the author herself. The last paragraph offers a brief overall conclusion of the work. The paper also includes References. The bibliography referred to in this paper consists of 22 references including books, articles and web pages.

In 1810, following his conversion, Manzoni returns to the Italian city of Milan, where he abandons himself to the spiritual guidance of Monsignor Luigi Tosi, recommended by Eustace Degolo, a Jansenist abbot. The former receives a letter from the latter in 1817, informing him on how Manzoni managed to escape a great danger: he found himself caught in a spiritual crisis that almost led him to an act of heresy. Manzoni, getting away from Tosi, attempts at selling out all his possessions in Milan in order to move to Paris (France), where he would stay with a friend of his, Claude Fauriel, for Manzoni laments for open-minded discussions he used to have with Fauriel in the French capital. At the same time, he finds the reactionary Catholic atmosphere in Milan appalling and disappointing in terms of his liberalism hued with Enlightenment and patriotic ideas. Still, Manzoni does not undertake the aforementioned journey that year and Manzoni abandons the idea of living in Paris and, what is of ultimate significance, he manages to struggle through the crisis that separated him from sacraments for a while. As a result of this struggle in 1817, there emerges his book entitled Observations on Catholic Ethics (Morale cattolica), an apologetic piece of prose conceived in order to refute Sismandi’s Histoire des Republiques italiennes au Moyen-Age, especially those sections in which this Calvinist scholar criticises Catholicism relying on a Machiavellian political tradition directed against the Roman Catholic Church. Reading Manzoni’s Observations on Catholic Ethics helps us understand the depth of crisis the author finds himself in, to realise that it originates from the criticism of the Catholic church from liberal and Enlightenment positions, represented by Sismondi himself. In addition, this work reveals the answer Manzoni used to give to both liberals and himself. It can be narrowed down to an ambitious and painstaking reconciliation concept: a complex agreement between ratio and faith, between moral truth and Catholic truth, between history and religion. Reading this work helps us understand Manzoni’s poetics in terms of its founding ideas as well, as depicted in A Letter to Mister Chauvet (Lettre a Monsieur Chauvet), but it also shows us the prodromes of the works to follow, such as The History of the Infamous Column (Storia della colonna infame) or the comparative essay entitled The 1789 French Revolution and the 1859 Italian Revolution.

The subject of transworld identity has been highly controversial both in philosophical and literary theories. Opinions range from the view that the notion of an identity that holds between objects in distinct possible worlds is so problematic as to be unacceptable, to the view that the notion is utterly innocuous, and no more problematic than the uncontroversial claim that individuals could have existed with somewhat different properties (Mackie et al. 2013). The criteria for identification and determination of transworld identity are used from Lubomir Dolezel’s theory of possible worlds. The aim of this paper has been to identify and analyse the ways in which the relation between the prototype and its counterpart is established in a work of fiction, in particular Margaret Atwood’s novel Alias Grace (1996), as well as to detect elements that point at the existence of a transworld identity between the two individual entities (the novel’s two female characters). Namely, our goal has been to show that there is a possibility that the individual entities exist both in the actual world of the text (AWT) and the alternative possible world (APW), which is parallel to the AWT. We have focused on the trans-world relation between the two female protagonists of Atwood’s novel – Grace Marks and Mary Whitney. We have endeavoured to show that Grace Marks (the novel’s main protagonist) and Mary Whitney (supposedly her best friend) serve as an example of the way in which the transworld identity is established. It has been concluded that the/a transworld identity was established on two levels. First, the transworld relation is determined between the characters that share the same proper name: the real Grace Marks (a historical figure that lived in the 19th century in the US) and the fictional Grace Marks (Atwood’s heroine). Also, the/a transworld relation is detected between the characters with a different proper name, in particular, between the fictional Grace Marks and her counterpart in the character of Mary Whitney. Due to the fact that no one (and nothing) within the novel could confirm the existence of Mary but Grace herself, there is a possibility that Mary functions as a mere product of Grace’s imagination – her alter-ego. We may reasonably assume that Grace and Mary are the same person existing in different worlds. This becomes evident the moment Mary leaves the AWT (she dies) and becomes an inhabitant of the world of the dead (APW). Soon we learn that she pays a visit to the AWT (in the episode of Grace’s hypnosis) by entering Grace’s body and speaking through her. The episode on hypnosis blurs the borders between the two worlds and confirms the idea that Grace and Mary are the genuine representatives of the transworld entities.
