SYSTEM GOLDACH: ÜBER KOMMUNIKATION UND SCHEIN IN GOTTFRIED KELLERS KLEIDER MACHEN LEUTE

In Kleider machen Leute (1874), written by one of the leading realist German writers, Gottfried Keller (1819-1890), the transition phase of the socially stratified societies’ into modern capitalism is debated in a literary way. In this work, the contradictions and weaknesses of the societies that are stuck in a transitional phase are depicted in a satirical language by using the scoundrel motif. Besides, by creating two different fictional cities called Seldwyla and Goldach, the attention is drawn to the inevitable dependence of the people on the layers in the community. The main character, as an unemployed poor tailor apprentice with a rich appearance treated like an earl by the Goldach society, reveals the social stratification of the society in a critical perspective, due to the consideration that only someone from the upper classes can have a good appearance is still dominant in the society. In this regard, we have shaped our study by taking into consideration Niklas Luhmann’s works on social strata stating that the social system consists of subsystems and communication, and his system theory and the concepts based on this theory. The system theory has enabled us to see the societal discord revealed in the novella and helped us achieve a better reading by contributing a new dimension to the text.

This article offers an insight into Zbigniew Herbert’s correspondence with Siegfried Unseld, the director of the German publishing house Suhrkamp Verlag, as well as other important figures in the publishing field, such as translators, editors and, crucially, representatives of organizations dealing with foreign cultural politics. Zajas discusses material held at the Siegfried Unseld Archiv (SUA), which was purchased by the Deutsches Literaturarchiv in Marbach am Neckar in 2009. These materials, Zajas argues, shed light on the production of Herbert’s works in German translation, which would often become a point of reference for Polish editions, thus anticipating the composition of the ‘original’ collections. What is more, Herbert’s correspondence paints a fascinating portrait of the long friendship between the poet and the publisher – a friendship that also functions as an important interactive element in the literary field.

The German literary heritage from the period between Middle Ages and Modern Times (8th-17th cc.) has an unquestionably high status in German Studies in the Germanspeaking countries. Hence, German Medieval Studies are widely acknowledged as an indisputably vital research domain. Austrian, German and Swiss academic institutions recognize German Medieval Studies as one of the three main autonomous components in German Studies – the other two being modern German Literature and Linguistics. This division is also mirrored in the academic curricula and the regulations concerning the scope of academic examinations. German Medieval Studies have a completely different status in countries other than the above, including Poland. In Poland, there can be no mention of institutional equality between the three components listed above. As can be inferred from the changes affecting the majority of programmes offered by the Institutes of German all around Poland, academic curricula seem to increasingly marginalize the early German literary legacy. The knowledge about the Medieval, Modern or Baroque texts is presented mostly, and sometimes exclusively, through curricular lectures. In some academic programmes, literature starts with the 18th century texts onward. This marginalized status of German Medieval Studies in the Polish Academia manifests itself correspondingly in the two branches of research: specializations and publications. Drawing upon the relevant German and English-language literature, the author of this paper would like to convince the Polish milieus of the specialists in German Studies of how important Old German literature is. The author also puts forward a postulate that in both the scientific and the didactic discourse within German Studies, the early German literary legacy should be given the position it rightly deserves.

Mieszkańcy „opacznego miniaturowego uniwersum”. Zwierzęta w twórczości W.G. Sebalda

The aim of this article is to examine the ways in which the forms and presence of animals are presented in the works of the German writer, Sebald, through selected approaches in animal studies. The article shows that animalistic discourse plays an important, if not central, part in Sebald’s literary imagination, which has gone largely unnoticed by critics for a long time, due to their predominant focus on the issues of memory, the Holocaust, and melancholia. The main subjects of analysis here are the novels “The Rings of Saturn” and “Austerlitz”, which are focused predominantly on the issue of human-animal relationships both on a textual and on a visual level. Firstly, the author will characterise the images of animals depicted in Sebald’s prose, then she will examine the animal cartographies, i.e. spaces where the writer locates his non-human protagonists, and in the end, the text will analyse the poetics of contrast and analogy through which Sebald describes the entanglement of the human’s mind in the exploitation of animals. The analysis will demonstrate that the coexistence of humans and animals in Sebald’s works is not linear, but rather creates sophisticated constellations of ostensibly distanced events from various periods and sources. Sebald places an animal’s suffering right at the centre of the turbulent and disastrous history of the 19th and 20th centuries and, through this inclusive gesture of empathy towards non-human animals, strictly breaks with the anthropocentric perspective of writing.

Pan Kiehot by Günter Grass is one of many literary incarnations of Cervantes’s Don Quijote. Grass created his hero in a double manner: the character exists in the poem Pan Kiehot, published in Gleisdreieck in 1960, and a fragment of a chapter in The Tin Drum, the novel published in 1959. The poem has been translated six times into Polish, by Jan Koprowski, Krzysztof Karasek, Bolesław Fac, Zdzisław Jaskuła, Wojciech Woźniak and Ryszard Sobieszczański), whereas The Tin Drum, only once, by Sławomir Błaut. The article analyses all the translations into Polish, as well as the translation into Kashubian by Jan Trepczyk, in the context of the notion of translation series and textualisation series, proposed by Marta Skwara, and with reference to theorists of quixotism, such as Arne Melberg, Josè Ortega y Gasset and Michel Foucault, as well as to German and Polish critics of Grass’s work. The author draws conclusions about the challenge of a different form of interpretation, multiplied interpretation, which is facing the reader of a translation or textualisation series. Every translator who works on a text that has been translated before, must face various anxieties: “the anxiety of influence”, which is often coupled by horror vacui, and fear of imperfect rendition of source-texts meanings (as described by Jerzy Jarniewicz). Thanks to translation series, and works that constitute textualisation series together with translations, Grass’s Pan Kiehot is inscribed in entirely new interpretative framework: each new translation, thus, constitutes a challenge for the translator and for the imagination of a reader of the series.

In particular, the article discusses a series of non-professional translations of the poem UFO agent’s skipping rope into German, as an example of the functioning of the dominant of everyday speech in translations of Białoszewski’s poetry.

The article discusses bruchsünden und todstücke, a book of selected poems by Witold Wirpsza, translated into German by Maria Kurecka. The book was published in 1967 in the “rot” series published in Stuttgart and edited by Max Bense and Elisabeth Walther, with typography by Hansjörg Mayer. The article demonstrates how the peculiar design of the book, as well as the connotations of the publishing series, and Wirpsza’s interests, allow us to read the book as a translation of a Polish image of language poetry into a G erman concept of experimental poetry book, especially in concrete poetry.

The immigration fact which has nearly half century in Germany have brought a significant literal accumulation (Migrantenliteratur) in its wake. This literal accumulation, which is named as several denominations, has a feature including different colours in itself. One of the most important source snourishing literature is society. Societal structure and problems that the writer lives inside, directly or indirectly reflect on his/her compositions. In this context, the matter of religion and tradition by way of the issue and fictious characters in the novel of Fakir Baykurt who went to Germany in her 50’s and lived in there till his death and who is a considerable name in Turkish literature with his several literal and intellectual workings; “Yarım Ekmek” which is the third novel of Duisburg Trilogy with “Koca Ren” and “Yüksek Fırınlar” are discussed sociologically in the study. The political and ideological past of the socialist realist lined writer in Turkey where he spent his life for a long time, manifest itself on the speech and fictious characters of novel. In the novel, themes of new Turks’ conflict, cultural shock, being in the middle, bi culturalism in their new cultural nature in Duisburg which is the city they live in. The writer not only deals with Turks in Germany but also personal and social subjects via comparing them to Turkey and even other countries. In the study, religious and traditional elements analyzed sociologically. Besides the speciality of being a migration novel in general, there are a lot of religious, political and ideological interpretations and discussions in the novel. These datum in the novel are examinated in the context of belief, ritual, politics and social categorisation.

Contemporary postmodern writers often use elements of myth, fairy tales and dream, and as a result, it enables them to intertwine between different time periods or to create a mixture of reality, fairy tale and dream. In this way, they are able to transmit fantastic elements into a realist narration by making reality relative and put forth illusory knowledge transfer of our senses. This unlimited freedom of narration, mostly preferred by postmodern writers, is expressed in the works of contemporary writers by way of putting together all the contrasts creatively. Nevertheless, these unrealistic narrative elements used in a particular frame help the writer to reflect his sense of reality freely. As an example of this, Martin Mosebach’s 1999 novel “Die Türkin” is analyzed here. In this novel, a young German academician who is on the peak of his career, falls in love with a Turkish girl who lives in Germany and instead of going to America for furthering his career, he comes to Turkey after her. Thus, novel creates levels of narration where cultures of east and west collide with each other and this changes the perception of reality. In this study, the novel is analyzed by focusing on these historical myths, fairy tales and dreams used in the narrative. After a brief summary of the plot, the sections related to mythology, fairy tale and dreams are selected, quoted and interpreted. At last, the same narrative elements of “Die Türkin” are compared to the Austrian novelist Peter Handke’s novel “Mein Jahr in der Niemandsbucht“ and the Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk’s novel “The White Castle ”. The common or similar usages of postmodern elements in these novels are analyzed.

In the paper we are revising the communication between the foreword of La Comedie Humaine by Honore de Balzac, and the Lucien Goldmann’s theory of genetic structuralism from the perspective of the Robert Jauss’ theory of the expectancy horizon. The object of the paper is to indicate the significance of social-historical conscience in the writing which Balzac and Goldmann are representing, as well as the differences which are revealed in the comprehension of the interpretative structure of the writing. In the paper is being concluded that the reader, as a manufacturer of the interpretations, must not be excluded from the interpretative process, as well as that Balzac’s and Goldmann’s theory can be comprehended as one aspect in revealing of the meaning, though not as a possibility in accomplishing of the wholeness, neither substantial as Balzac had intended, nor structural as Goldmann did.

Human-specific some common and general features are called archetypes by specialists. By creating universal and general model archetypes have been effective in myths echoing themselves with the same themes through history. Because of the interrelation between mythology and literature this similar themes that echoing themselves passes through literature and provides the transfer of current one implicitly. Hereby from past to present it’s seen that mythological elements have been subject to literary works. By blending, changing and modernizing these elements with different perspectives artists, poems and writers have tried to create original works. The revelation of these elements led to a better understanding of the literary works. In the works that we analyze there is also the same kind of changing and modernization of the narcissus myth. The aim of this study is to present to what extent coincide the three novels; “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, “Narcissus and Goldmund” by Hermann Hesse and “Resimli Dünya” (Picture World) by Nedim Gürsel with each other and mythology, and to reveal how the myth of Narcissus is represented in these novels in terms of comparative literature. In this comparative study archetypal criticism and psychoanalytical criticism will be used as it is equally essential to understand the mythological elements and psychology of the novel characters and authors. At the end of this comparative study it has been observed that archetypes have been echoed in literary works by going through some changes and people share common grounds even they have different cultures. It has been identified that each of the three novels is a representation of the myths of Narcissus; however each author narrates the myths by modernizing and changing it.

In this paper, author aimed to contribute to the debate about hegemonic relations between the West European ‘‘core’’ and southeast European ‘‘margins,’’ by showing the links between mutually challenged and engendered quasi-anthropological traditions in the totalitarian projects of nation-building and empire-building. New aspects of a continuous resonance were addressed between a politically instrumentalized Albanian tradition of ‘‘folk’’ or people’s culture studies (kultura popullore) and a German-speaking tradition of Volks- and Völkerkunde grounded in Herderean Romanticism and the imperial ambitions of the nineteenth century. In the course of discussion the successive German traditions of National Socialist Volkskunde and Communist East German Ethnographie, until the revised tradition of Europaische Ethnologie in the 1990s, are shown to operate from a historicist tradition rather than from a critical tradition as a reflexive successor to former Volkskunde. In the course of this discussion, he paid particular attention to contextualizing the historical and current production of knowledge by the German and Austrian ‘‘West’’ on a Balkan and Albanian culture, which is reduced to its archaic or pre-modern ‘‘traditions’’ and its specific or antiquated ‘‘mentalities.’’

The aim of the article is to connect the model of cognitive metonymy with the model of types of denotative equivalence on word level to check out the explanational potential of the model of cognitive metonymy for describing and explaining the use and occurance of word equivalents in the Lithuanian translations of the fairy tales of the Brothers’ Grimm by Juozas Balčikonis (1938–1939) and Adomas Druktenis (1999–2001). The Brothers’ Grimm fairy tales (GFT ) can be seen in a wide sense as a source of the history of culture and social life in the German speaking countries of the 19th century. Culture-bound words a) refer to a special cultural knowledge, which is in a historical sense not or not completely compatible with the structure of knowledge in our present days, and b) refer to a common cultural knowledge of the community of German speaking countries. The translations of the GFT present ways of handling of German culture-bound words for foreign readers. In this article I want to show, if and how the translators achieved a correct and appropriate understanding of the culture-bound words by choosing equivalents. This allows to show what semantic and cognitive procedures stand behind the use of certain equivalents. By comparing the German original with the two Lithuanian translations it is possible to work out if and how the culture-bound words of the original texts are rendered in the translations, and finally to inductively conclude how far the conceptual metonymy takes part in rendering of culture-bound words in the target texts. Investigating this, there can be established modifications in the theory of conceptual metonymy in the framework of cognitive linguistics.

APPROACHING FROM BOTH SIDES – CONTEMPORARY HUNGARIAN-GERMAN MINORITY LITERATURE AS A CHALLENGE FOR THE HUNGARIAN STUDIES

The aim of this paper is to propose a cross-cultural approach to contemporary Hungarian-German minority literature comprising texts written both in German and in Hungarian in order to give an adequate description of the Hungarian-German minority’s literary scene. Also, the significance of this specific minority literature within the context of culture and heritage conservation and its true identity-forming potential can be analysed that way. First results indicate that Hungarian-German literature can help to (re)gain an authentic minority consciousness, but this requires not only a revaluation of the Hungarian-German literary institutions but also the capability to reinvent Hungarian-German literature on the part of the youngest generation of minority writers.
