The motivation behind this project generated in the classes I attended as an undergraduate student; these classes inspired me to get more closely involved with the poetry of Miltos Sachtouris, on a much deeper level. In the context of the class devoted to “Bulgarian Literature and Cultural Review” (this lesson was taught by Mrs. Stefania Filipova-Metzimeki) in our postgraduate program of the Department of Balcan, Slavic and Oriental Studies“ History, Anthropology and Culture in Eastern and South- eastern Europe” I decided to indulge in the color motive within the poetry of M. Sachtouris, and – comparatively – within the poetry of Kiril Kadiisky. So that I could better understand the latter, I have studied the one and only study I managed to discover, written in French. Yet, it proved to be more than helpful in understanding some quite important meanings in his poetry As for the poetry of M. Sachtouris, the number of the available sources was quite large. Still, I was not interested in recycling the already existing projects.

Petko Todorov’s Plays and the Poetics of European Symbolism

The paper examines Petko Todorov’s five symbolist plays (Masons, Strahil the Redoubtable Haidout, The Fairy, Bride Boryana, and Dragon’s Wedding) from the perspective of European symbolist drama to emphasize their common aesthetic principles and their specific originality. The comparative analysis thus defined leads to the conclusion that Petko Todorov’s works follows the structural principles of Symbolist drama yet they have their own specifics. The unconventional structure of the dramatic action and dialogue; the wide use of music and painting in the staging of the plays as well as their new genre form make Todorov’s works akin to the francophone Symbolist model. On the other hand, the moral dimension and the pervading national atmosphere in the Bulgarian dramas betray their indebtedness to the Russian Symbolist drama. Finally, the de-valorisation of the fantastic characters and the playing down of Romantic and realistic elements in Petko Todorov’s dramas are totally unknown to the European Symbolist theatre. In this way, Petko Todorov’s dramas are a peculiar combination of Symbolist poetics and influences of the Bulgarian national context. They follow their own development and contribute hereby to the specific evolution of the Bulgarian modernist theatre.

МОЖЕ ЛИ БЪЛГАРСКАТА ЛИТЕРАТУРА ДА УСПЕЕ НА НЕМСКОЕЗИЧНИЯ ПАЗАР?

Due to the existence of an endless number of prejudices among Bulgarian intellectuals coupled with the paranoia that Bulgaria and its writers are being intentionally neglected by the world at large, the author of this article reveals the most influential factors that contribute to literary success, or failure thereof, among German-speaking readers and literary critics. He concludes that contemporary Bulgarian writers are inclined to either follow the Anglo-American pattern of fiction writing, or focus on their domestic cultural tradition, thus paying no attention to the universal human qualities and patterns of behaviour that would enable readers all over the world to indetify with their works. Toward its end, the paper points out a few specifics of Milena Kirova’s History of Bulgarian literature that have rendered the volume (in its German translation) valuable to the German-speaking audience.

The paper analyses Yovkov’s “Last joy” through the interpretation of the feast and its functions. The reach of people with eternal spiritual values with beauty and love is only temporary and incomplete; the feast does not reach the goal to unify material and spiritual, individual and society. The crisis in celebration is caused by the crisis of community. It cannot raise its own leaders, as well as it cannot separate the sacred from the profane. The paper develops the idea that in Yovkov’s prose not only the individual should strive towards beauty and good, but the society also should change its attitudes to achieve harmony with man and the world.

The book contains valuable and very interesting information and descriptions on which comparisons and researches can be made. Furthermore, the paper intends to show the link between the daily life and culture of the inhabitants of Rhodope Mountains and the musical expressions and the repertoire of their songs. The main specific features of the Rhodope music and songs are described and parallels with Greek and Balkan folklore are marked. The paper offers literature, folklore, music and other routes in space and time in the Rhodope Mountains

The art imagery of the poetic text is considered through the prism of memory as a specific being, as a sign reality, embodying the act of consciousness, which considers that the found Meaning is always contradictory and immanent when connected to experience and realization of Love.

The paper offers a framework for better understanding of the folklore song in primary school. Its nature is informal. The teacher has the right to model and re-model the methods discussed and to ignore/adapt some of them in regard to the audience involved. The project is based on the fact that a given piece of certain education content and its understanding is compulsory affiliated to the type of the text and genre identification (myth or folklore or a literary one). The methods discussed involve revealing of the characteristics that are part of the folklore culture and the expression of which is the song itself. The genre of the song motivates the problems in its understanding and the examples show the way they function.

Author of this article presents Dora Gabe as a translator (from Polish to Bulgarian) of the „Hymns“ collection written by Jan Kasprowicz. She investigated the process of popularization of the Kasprowicz works and Polish literature in Bulgaria by Gabe and her husband Boyan Penev. There is also showed an attitude of Gabe towards Dobrudzha, perceived from the Bulgarian perspective and the synonym of the local homeland.
