„Nicht Jonny, Walzer spielt auf“ Komparativní úvaha nad žánrovými specifiky valčíku v opeře, beletrii a dramatice českého a rakouského fin de siècle

„Nicht Jonny, Walzer spielt auf“ Komparativní úvaha nad žánrovými specifiky valčíku v opeře, beletrii a dramatice českého a rakouského fin de siècle

Author(s): Kristýna Celhofferová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2012

The paper focuses on the distinctive features of “waltz” in opera, belles-lettres, and drama of Czech and Austrian fin de siecle. The starting point of the paper is a reflection of waltz reflection in Hofmannsthal’s and Strauss’ opera “Rosenkavalier” and its concept of a Spieloper as a critique of contemporary aesthetism and a reception of this “waltz opera” in the Czech cultural kontext: Zdeněk Nejedlý and Max Brod tried to rethink this opera with regard to the ambivalent innovation of music-expressing facilities and waltz-anachronism. The study in its next step monitors Max Brod’s critical attitudes in the context of his own work. Futhermore, the study compares the use of the waltz in the works of the Austrian context of Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig and Joseph Roth with works of Jiří Karásek of Lvovice, Julius Zeyer, Jaroslav Kvapil, Josef and Karel Čapeks of the Czech context. In its final part the paper deals with an evocation of jazz adaptations of waltz in late prosaic and essayistic works of Stefan Zweig; finally these works are compared to Ernst Křenek’s opera “Jonny spielt auf” which connects jazz with an escape from the conventional European culture.

Author(s): Lyudmila Sergeevna Gotz / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 4/2020

The purpose of this article is to investigate and explicate transhumanistic cultural messages found in G. Mairink's novel "The Golem" (1914). The methodology of research within the framework of Cultural Studies consists of the use of structural-functional plot analysis, semiotic and hermeneutic analysis, axiological, and archetypal analysis (analytical psychology of C. G. Jung). The scientific novelty of this paper lies in the fact that within the framework of the humanities, in particular cultural studies, for the first time the analysis of the "Golem" novel is carried out in the context of the transhumanist paradigm. Also offered are the author's definitions of the concepts of "transhumanism" and "transhumanistic act". Conclusions. G. Meyrink‘s esoteric transhumanism insists on the need to overcome the "golemic", that is, the "incompleteness", the original imperfection of man, and reach self deification.

Rilkeovo tumačenje postojanja. Interpretacija Devinskih elegija

Rilkeovo tumačenje postojanja. Interpretacija Devinskih elegija

Author(s): Romano Guardini / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 01+06/2021

Devinske elegije stavljaju interpretatora pred nimalo lak zadatak. U njima se izražavaju iskustva i misli možda najizdiferenciranijeg njemačkog pjesnika s kraja novog vijeka. Rainer Maria Rilke kasan je čovjek. Intelektualno i duhovno on znade mnogo.

O knjizi Romana Guardinija (1955.)

Tumačenje postojanja kod Rainera Marije Rilkea. O knjizi Romana Guardinija (1955.)

Author(s): Hans-Georg Gadamer / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 01+06/2021

„Die Sprache hat also ihren Ort.“ Zur Mehrsprachigkeit von Maja Haderlaps Roman Engel des Vergessens

„Die Sprache hat also ihren Ort.“ Zur Mehrsprachigkeit von Maja Haderlaps Roman Engel des Vergessens

Author(s): Dieter Neidlinger,Silke Pasewalck / Language(s): German Issue: 1/2021

Based on philological research on multilingualism and with regard to Maja Haderlap’s literary work in general this article deals with the specific form of multilingualism that can be observed in her novel Engel des Vergessens (2011). Maja Haderlap, born 1961 in Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla, Carinthia (region in southern Austria), grew up with two languages, Slovenian and German. The authors of the article pursue the question to what degree her literary work and especially her novel can be characterised as multilingual and what kind of poetic multilingualism can be found there. They focus on the novel’s narrative and on the use of language(s), with a short historical excursus on the Slovenian minority in Carinthia as well as the difficult memory politics in Austria. Maja Haderlap not only writes about the territorial and historical preconditions of multilingualism in Carinthia but also inscribes these conditions in the text itself, characterising both the narrative and the language. Although the novel is the result of a shift from Slovenian to German, its multilingualism can be analysed on different levels: on the level of the relationship between discours and histoire – to refer to Genette’s narratological terms –, on the level of cultural codes of the Slovenian language within the novel’s German text, and in general with regard to the fact, that the text is written with the modes of expression of Slovenian and German or with the help of the ‘no man’s land’ between the languages. One can therefore – with respect to the terms of philological research – find both obvious and latent multilingualism and, thirdly, one can observe Mehr-Sprachlichkeit, a term that has been defined by Silke Pasewalck in previous articles.

Između jave i sna

Između jave i sna

Author(s): Irma Duraković / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1/2021

The Story Der Garten der Erkenntnis (1895) by the Austrian author Leopold von Andrian is colored by a dreamlike atmosphere and, as such, points to the importance of the dream phenomenon among Viennese modernists even before Freud’s revolutionary study Die Traumdeutung (1900) served as a template for literary dreams. Erwin, the protagonist, although travelling through cities, does not embark on life and opposes sleep; his perception of the outside word is “narcissistic”. Erwin is in search of knowledge of the world; however, his view on his path to cognition becomes increasingly subjective, resulting in an encounter with his doppelganger. And his struggle with the doppelganger does not take place in his dream, but in his dreamlike reality. In this paper, the question arises as to what the dreamlike reality is, why does Erwin flee to it and what consequences are left on on him and the perception of the world around him.

Krankheitsbilder im Roman Schornstein von Jan Faktor und Terminifera von Michael Stavarič

Krankheitsbilder im Roman Schornstein von Jan Faktor und Terminifera von Michael Stavarič

Author(s): Renata Cornejo / Language(s): German Issue: 2/2021

Author(s): Beate Petra Kory / Language(s): German Issue: 22/2022

Author(s): Gianfranco Longo / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3 (37)/2022

The common good is realized in the encounter of those moments that reveal the passage from the historical identification of truth to redemption as an archetypal recognition by man of God the Creator, letting that special explosion give life to the discreet in the order of nature and the world: revolution and utopia are in fact the upheaval that indicates a social destructive disorder. In this condition man succeeds in arriving at a dimension of atonement of the past and its events, being able to evaluate his existence as often uncertain in the unfolding of his events, deducing, from his signs and his plausible correspondences, a bond that emerges linear for having been many times interrupted and resumed, and not confined to an Anderswo, distant, unattainable and indeterminable. Violence strikes in these cases the sovereign political event leading to a sacrificial crisis.

denk an Pasolinis »verzweifelte Leere von Casarsa«”: Considerations on the Influence of Spanish Mysticism and of Pasolini’s »Friulian« Poems on Peter Handke’s Noch einmal für Thukydides and Versuch über die Jukebox

denk an Pasolinis »verzweifelte Leere von Casarsa«”: Considerations on the Influence of Spanish Mysticism and of Pasolini’s »Friulian« Poems on Peter Handke’s Noch einmal für Thukydides and Versuch über die Jukebox

Author(s): Alessandro Pulimanti / Language(s): English Issue: 15/2022

The aim of this paper is to reflect on Handke’s reception of Spanish and Friulian traditions. The first part of this paper will mention Miguel de Cervantes’, Teresa of Ávila’s and John of the Cross’ influence on Handke’s works, while also focusing on Handke’s fascination with the Spanish tradition and Pasolini’s works through the use of the comparative method. Pasolini’s vision of modern cultural customs is also taken into consideration in Handke’s Essay on the Jukebox, where clear references to Spanish authors also appear. The same occurs in Handke’s Glowworm Epopee, where Pasolini’s critical view of the “vanishing of the fireflies” indirectly shines throughout a tribute to the Poems in Casarsa. In the second section, an anthropological perspective will be employed, seeing as Handke’s ‘mysticism’ can be said to have drawn inspiration from the Romantic motif of “Mother Holle” (Höller 2013). In this regard, Ginzburg’s (1989) and Nardon’s (1999) studies will be used to assume Handke’s attachment to Friulian folk topics dating back to the 17th century. As opposed to Handke’s reception of Pasolini’s critical views and of Spanish mysticism, the influence of Friulian ethno-anthropological aspects on the Carinthian author’s works still needs to be demonstrated and its study improved.

ZU HAUSE IN DER DEUTSCHEN SPRACHE: ZWEISPRACHIGKEIT UND SPRACHMISCHUNGEN IN DEN TEXTEN VON RADEK KNAPP

Author(s): Agnieszka Palej / Language(s): German Issue: 40/2019

The writers with the so-called migration background are among those people who have undergone a dramatic change of culture and language as migrants and whose curriculum vitae is shaped by this change between languages and ways of life. The new language allows access to a new, different culture, thus also access to a new cultural identity and – last but not least – to a new reading public, which in the case of literary creation can be of crucial importance because the writers deliberately decide on a new addressee group. Although one mostly sees and acknowledges the most important identity marker in language, German as a literary medium of expression and publication in the case of transcultural writers does not establish homogeneous national identities, but fulfills the function of a transit space, a zone, a transcultural space of interpenetration and interweaving the cultural as well as the transformation of national affiliations and cultural identity. The texts of migrant authors reflect the importance of dealing with two languages because the bilingualism of migrants, often in the context of cultural identity, plays a role in migrant literature. The writers try to bring their own bilingualism into the texts, where often both cultures and languages co-exist. In the presentation selected texts are subjected to an analysis by the Polish-Austrian writer Radek Knapp. The article explores the question of where and how bilingualism and language mixtures manifest themselves in the individual texts of Knapp.

SEMNIFICAŢIA RĂZBOIULUI ȊN LITERATURĂ, ȊNTRE SENS ŞI NONSENS

Author(s): Irina Maria Aldea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

This article aims to introduce some authors who, through their literary works, tried to bring to light the horrors of an epoch which, throughout history, has altered the course of the entirety of humanity. Authors such as Homer, Roger Martin du Gard, Virginia Woolf, Stefan Zweig or Amos Oz have differently reflected the realities of war in their literary works, however, all of them shared one common attempt: to make their pacifist opinion heard and, more than that, for two of these authors, the haunting feeling to abandon a world where the essence of life seemed to have faded away.

Between a “Poetical Phrase” and Being “Led into Error” in "The Interpretation of Dreams"

Author(s): Mischa Twitchin / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

The aim of this essay is to explore various instances of visualisation not only of psycho-analysis but in psycho-analysis – with respect to both the dynamics of transference and translation. The principal examples considered are: antiquities in Freud’s consulting room; gifts in the Freud Museum shop; the Rosetta Stone; and the translation of the “Fool’s Tower” dream in chapter six of The Interpretation of Dreams. How are relations between literal and metaphorical enacted in these examples, informing questions concerning relations between visualisation and conceptualisation in psycho-analysis? How might Freud’s claims concerning the “poetical” and “error” in the interpretation of dreams inform a reading of The Interpretation of Dreams itself?

BUCHAREST TOPOI IN “MEMOIRES OF AN ANTI-SEMITE” BY GREGOR VON REZZORI

BUCHAREST TOPOI IN “MEMOIRES OF AN ANTI-SEMITE” BY GREGOR VON REZZORI

Author(s): Ştefan Mihăilă / Language(s): English Issue: 33/2023

The second half of the 20th century is characterized in the humanities by a paradigm shift in relation to space. In architecture, urban space is reconsidered, rethought, and reshaped under the new parameters created on the one hand by postwar capitalism in the West and on the other by communist ideology and doctrine in the Soviet and Central and Eastern European countries. Also, in philosophy and sociology, the relationship between the (urban) space and the individual is analysed and reconsidered on the basis of reciprocity, materialism, and social interactions. Last but not least, both literary criticism and literature as a form of artistic expression will engage with what we now call the Spatial Turn. Bakhtin’s coining of a concept to represent the relation time-space gave a very significant impulse in the literary studies for new approaches regarding the importance of space in literary texts. Among more recent works and theoretical approaches, we can find Westphal’s Geocriticism or Tally’s Literary Cartography. As far as this paper is concerned, we approach the significance of the Bucharest literary topoi in the autobiographical work of Gregor von Rezzori “Memoires of an Anti-Semite” from a literary cartographical perspective. We would like to determine in which terms Bucharest is remapped in the literary text and to which extent this text could be considered a city novel.

Nagroda Nobla dla Olgi Tokarczuk w komentarzach prasy serbskiej i chorwackiej

Nagroda Nobla dla Olgi Tokarczuk w komentarzach prasy serbskiej i chorwackiej

Author(s): Dagmara Luković / Language(s): Polish Issue: 17/2019

This year's verdict of the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy attracted special media attention and became the cause of many polemics. There were two reasons for this - firstly, because two prizes were awarded, and secondly, one of the winners, Peter Handke, was and is still very controversial. The Serbian and Croatian media also did not remain outside the general trends, not questioning the validity of awarding O. Tokarczuk with the Nobel Prize in Literature, but lively discussing the choice of the second laureate. One thing that should be emphasized here is that their statements regarding P. Handke had a completely different tone: while Croatian journalists did not hide their indignation about this, Serbian ones expressed their satisfaction, which is related to the Austrian writer's statements about the last war in the Balkans.

Author(s): Marija N. Joka / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 79/2022

This paper will discuss Thomas Bernhard’s novel The Loser, published in 1983, through the analysis of which we will single out some of the main features of postmodernist art, referring to the texts of the most authoritative literary theorists, including Frederic Jameson, Linda Hutcheon, Ihab Hasan and others. We will pay attention to Bernhard’s attitude towards art and the place it occupies in the culture of late capitalism, as well as his view of the political scene in Austria of that period. In terms of form, we will focus on linguistic means specific only to Bernhard, but also on fragmentation and a special model of the narrator that are characteristic of the entire postmodern literature.
