W perspektywie Innego. Czytanie opowiadań Irit Amiel w kontekście psychologii międzykulturowej

Intercultural psychlogy is a discipline within cultural studies. It is of an interdisciplinary character, combining the philosophy of meeting, imagology, and discourse and becomes the part of the metadiscourse practiced by cultural comparative studies. The article attempts to test the tool in reading Irit Amiel’s stories. The author is an Israeli writer who, in The Seared, deals with the topic of the Holocaust. Her biography – Jewish in origin, with her childhood in Poland, and wandering around Germany and Italy, finally stopping in a Palestinian haven – testifies to her intercultural pedigree. Amiel takes up the subject of the Holocaust after almost fifty years of silence, and she does so by showing different cultural points of view. Intercultural psychology discovers the framework of social behavior in which the characters move. This tool allows us to show that today “being seared” is one of the constitutive features of the Jewish culture.

The Impact of Turkish Poetics in Albanian Poetry and Folk Culture

Albanian poetry of Oriental tradition which began to emerge during the Ottoman period, that continued throughout the twentieth century, was structured within the schematization and poetic formulations of the Turkish tradition. The Albanian poets of the period originally succeeded to create in Turkish, Persian and Arabic languages, where subsequently introduced this tradition to their Albanian creativity. Communist ideological studies had ignored, even deliberately overlooked, judging as the poetry and culture of the national enemy. But our research argues that this type of literature had an enormous influence in the culture and particularly in the national Albanian literature. Thus, the Albanian poetry, created within Ottoman poetical and aesthetic-philosophical systems, has left deep traces in Albanian mentality and culture and has occupied an important place in the structuring of the Albanian mentality. Our paper argues that this poetry tradition reflects the ontological and epistemological condition of the Albanian people for many centuries, which has also penetrated deeply into the subjugation of Albanians. The paper additionally assesses the traces that Turkish classical poetry has left in Albanian folk culture and folk literature.

The notion of the Subaltern has come to have deep roots in understanding postcolonial history. Established by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, it has come to define the essence of global cultural relations, as we perceive them today. However, the origin of this theory could not have been less regional, with a starting point in Calcutta in the first half of the 20th century. The way in which it describes the relations of power between India and the British Empire gives place to a global understanding of a dominant culture took control of subjects in minority. This paper is going to seek to expose the roots of the notion of Subalterns, not refraining from touching upon disparities between genders, nations, and traditions.

Departing from the “aesthetics of unrepresentability” of testimonial literature and implied “belatedness and collapse of witnessing” (G. Agamben, Sh. Felman, D. Laub), the paper engages in the economic foundations of literature through analysis of symbolic meanings of economic metaphors in Štajner’s memoirs Seven Thousand Days in Siberia and Shalamov’s story Lend-Lease, and through illuminating different aspects of intertextual and intercultural exchange between Štajner’s memoirs and Kiš’s “pseudo-factual” fiction A Tomb for Boris Davidovich. What is testimony and can it be – considering the nature of the one who testifies and the language in which he testifies – “valid,” “valuable,” “useful,” to use the language of economy? Can we think about Kiš’s literary appropriation of Štajner’s memoirs as an outlet for reclaiming the voice not only of Štajner, but also of Kiš’s father, who perished in Auschwitz? What are the uses of economic hypothesis in literary studies?

In this paper, the author deals with Predrag Stepanović’s short stories, featuring romantic sentiments written in the period of 1965-2005. They discuss autobiographical stories of Nepovrat and Pobijte plave kanarince, taking place in the present day, alongside with an early novel by the same author, Prepolovljeni, since all three texts highlight unfortunate young love. Unlike these three, whose plot is unrelated to the writer’s home country, the following two short stories, Ludačka romansa and Arhetipski krimić, feature past events in Stepanović’s home town of Mohacs (Hungary). This time, however, the writer’s persona is not in the spotlight, it is merely just one of the fictitious narrators, rendering these short stories as not purely autobiographical, although the writer appears as the first-person narrator. Instead, the protagonists in the story of Ludačka romansa are two mentally deranged characters, namely Luda Mara and Kolesar, while the story of Arhetipski krimić is centred around Marika, a famous beauty from ancient times, best known for her ‘wicked’ eyes. In oral tradition, she is thought to be a dragon’s daughter. Using this legend as a starting point in his own story, Stepanović, with great skill, penetrates deeply into the souls and actions of his characters, which results in a series of all-time and irrational archetypal motifs, such as a dragon’s love, witchcraft, and a murder caused by a magic spell. The last of the short stories discussed, with the somewhat mysterious title of Usudne reči, is embedded into the WWII milieu. On the other hand, it is a documentary. It is a known fact that there was the Sarvar concentration camp in old Hungary intended for Serbs (mainly for women, children, and the elderly). At the same time, this is a destiny-revealing story. The plot within a plot depicts a young Serbian woman named Duša and her two sons, who are prisoners in a kamp for 'chetniks' ('Csetniktábor'), and a young married couple from Hungary with a baby girl who hire Duša as househelp. When Duša loses both her sons due to a typhoid epidemic in the camp, she transfers all her love to the baby girl, she sings and talks to her in Serbian with such warmth that her words determine the girl's destiny. The main plot features a mother of a grown-up young woman that tells this story, with the punchline of the story presenting us with the fact that her daughter married the only Serb she had ever met.

Od Piotrusia Pana do Tajemnic motyli. Stefania Szuchowa, Zofia Rogoszówna, James Matthew Barrie i inni – historia (prawie) rodzinna

The aim of the article is to conduct a comparative analysis of intertextual filiations between a debut book of Polish writer Stefania Szuchowa, titled Tajemnice motyli [The Secrets of Butterflies] (1920), and James Matthew Barrie’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906) which first appeared in Poland in 1913 as Przygody Piotrusia Pana [Peter Pan’s Adventures] thanks to the translation by Zofia Rogoszówna. As an essential context to this study, the author of the paper presents an almost unknown biography of Szuchowa who debuted as a writer during the interwar period – a prolific and intensive time in Polish publishing for children, including both original and translated books. This analysis of intertextual relations connecting the works by Barrie and Szuchowa is supplemented by a comparative study of striking resemblances between Stefan Norblin’s illustrations to the first edition of Tajemnice motyli and Arthur Rackham’s graphics to Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

Widokówka z Paryża. O polskich przekładach Madeline Ludwiga Bemelmansa

The paper discusses the only translations of Ludwig Bemelmans’s Madeline (1939) into Polish, which are presented against the background of the writer’s biography and other works. Translations by Zofia Kierszys (1998) and Małgorzata Pietrzyk (2015) allow the Polish reader to become acquainted with the work of the English‑language author of children’s literature. The author of the paper proves how different strategies chosen by the two translators can affect the reception of the picture book which appeared in Poland almost sixty years after the American premiere. By juxtaposing the original work and the Polish translations, the author also shows the evolution of translation norms and trends on a concrete example.

The aim of the article is to compare the translation strategies used by Jolanta Sztuczyńska and Jarosław Kilian in Polish translations of the same ten volumes of the comic series Asterix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The most difficult task faced by Sztuczyńska and Kilian was translating the humorous elements of the books, both these addressed to the child reader and those appealing to the adult. The differences between their methods of translation are visible, above all, in the translations of proper names, dialects, texts embedded in the picture, citations, lyrics, and other content that includes cultural and linguistic allusions.

Beware the White Rabbit: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and A. G. Howard’s Splintered as Gothic Cautionary Tales for Young Girls

The aim of this article is to speculate on the meaning that Lewis Carroll’s (1865, 1871) Alice’s journey through dark Wonderland has acquired in two examples of contemporary YA fiction, Tim Burton’s 2010 film adaptation and A. G. Howard’s 2013 Splintered novel, both depicting Wonderlands that are more dangerous and threatening than what Carroll himself envisioned in his novels. The study shows how Alice’s gender and the fact that she is now portrayed as an adolescent affect her narrative. Among other reasons, the author of the paper argues that the fact that Carroll’s books feature a girl protagonist who wanders alone in a strange land, together with a long-standing tradition of warning girls against doing precisely this, has resulted in the proliferation of YA narratives that turn Carroll’s ‘golden afternoon’ into a Gothic nightmare.

Dybiec-Gajer, J. (2017). Złota różdżka – od książki dla dzieci po dreszczowiec raczej dla dorosłych. Kraków: Tertium. The review article discusses the book by Joanna Dybiec-Gajer, Złota różdżka – od książki dla dzieci po dreszczowiec raczej dla dorosłych [A Golden Wand – from a Children’s Book to a Thriller Rather for Adults] (2017). The text presents the structure, methodology, and the most important theses of the monograph on the already classic work by Heinrich Hoffmann (1845), as well as indicates the scholar’s original and valuable findings proving the sense of rediscovering texts belonging to the cultural canon. The article points out also to the productivity of creating a microhistory of a literary work, taking into consideration numerous contexts of its functioning, and refers to Dybiec-Gajer’s reflections on the ways of writing the text (including the structure, genre convention, adaptive mechanisms) and how to read it (including interpretation, reception), which is particularly interesting in the context of relations between the German Struwwelpeter and the Russian Stëpka‑Rastrëpka (1849), or the Polish Złota różdżka [A Golden Wand] (ca. 1858).

Fairy Tale Futures: Critical Reflections

Praet, S., & Kérchy, A. (Eds.). (2019). The fairy tale vanguard: Literary self-consciousness in a marvelous genre. Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars. This article provides critical reflections on Stijn Praet and Anna Kérchy’s edited collection, The Fairy Tale Vanguard: Literary Self-Consciousness in a Marvelous Genre (2019). Vanguard can be defined as “the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force,” with established and emerging critics marching in defence of the fairy tale against the genre’s complicated reception throughout the ages. The form’s self-consciousness and intertextual complexity is foregrounded, with fairy tale experiments ranging from those of 17th-century French female conteuses, to modernist short stories and contemporary films, which all combine into a celebration of the genre’s sophistication and continued relevance. The book engages with the generic complexity of the fairy tale, defying any kind of neat categorisation. ‘Fairy tale’ often functions as a ‘catch-all’ term for different fairy tale narratives, but this study paves the way for reflections on new subgenres such as the ‘anti-tale’. Finally, it is suggested that Rikki Ducornet’s idea of the ‘deep magic’ of fairy tales opens us up to a possibility, to an embrace of the unknown and all of its potentiality, providing us with an imaginative space within which to envision a new and better reality. This is foregrounded as a central tenant to The Fairy Tale Vanguard’s privileging of experimentation, which highlights that the fairy tale harnesses a deeply political potential in challenging current oppressions. Perhaps it is not us, fairy tale scholars, who are marching to the aid of the fairy tale then, rather it is the tales fighting for us in an unjust world.

ТЕНДЕНЦИЈА ДЕНОМИНАЦИЈЕ И ПРЕЦРТАВАЊА САВРЕМЕНЕ ИСТОРИЈЕ У КУЛТУРИ ЗАПАДА

The essay is based on postcolonialism and it questions the correlation between official history and the process of dehumanisation by which economically dominating structures endeavour to devaluate other historical perspectives, defy- ing their own versions. Thus, a persistent attempt of imperial forces to impose aˈpatriarchalˈ version of history, as Fredy Perlman would say it, is identified. This eurocentric attempt of outcasting others, is defied by many social critics, such as Brazilian pedagogue Paulo Freire, and American academic, Arab from Palestine Edward Said, as well as writers of alike convictions, for example Eduardo Galeano from Uruguay, and Puerto Rican Jew Aurora Levins Morales, who are proposing hu- manism that Europe has betrayed throughout its history and its betrayal disguised cunningly. Despite the proclamations of these authors that such an one-sided history should be urgently revised, the tendency of overwriting the already accepted parts of history that do not correspond to the interests of the West, doesn’t cease. The afore mentioned process of overwriting (and fabrication of) history refers either to literal doodling over the pages that testify of bloody and genocide concerning events or to a victory of conquered nations over fascism. To the dates which (co)memorate mentioned events, a new aureole is assigned that celebrates new alliances within imperialistic culture. This essay displays the theories to which the empires strive in order to ̎colonize the mind̎ (Thiongo) and ̎dehumanize the oppressed ̎ (Freire), in order to achieve their own economic goals and to preserve the power. It also offers an insight into the mechanism of defence, available to the oppressed so that they can preserve their own history (and culture), and by doing so, their humanity as well.

Nisu sve imperije bile iste. Francuski imperij, kao što kažejedan od njegovih najslavnijih povjesničara, premda je kao i britanski bio usmjeren na profit, plantaže i robove, pokretao je »prestiž«. Njegovim raznim područjima stjecanim (i katkad izgubljenim) tijekom tri stoljeća upravljao je blistavi »genij«, koji je kao takav određena funkcija Francuske »vocation superieure«, kao što su rekli Delavigne i Charles Andre Julien, autori fascinantnog djela, Les Constructeurs de la France d’outre-mer. Njihov popis likova započinje sa Champlainom i Richelieuom i obuhvaća zastrašujuće prokonzule kao što je Bugeaud, osvajač Alžira, Brazza, čovjek koji je osnovao Francuski Kongo, Gallieni, koji je pokorio Madagaskar i Lyautey, uz Cromera, najveći europski vladar nad muslimanskim Arapima. U tom golemom asimilacijskom pothvatu naslućuje se određena podudarnost sa britanskim »upravnim shvaćanjem«, ali daleko više osobni stil Francuza.

Teze o jeziku, rasi i kulturi kod starih Grka i Rimljana redovito se pojavljuju u modernoj literaturi o kolonijalizmu i političkim tekstovima. One su, svjesno ili nesvjesno, ugrađene u kolonijalistički diskurs i koriste se za artikulaciju imperijalne ideologije. Isaac u knjizi The Invention of Racism kaže da su rani oblici rasizma, kojeje nazvao »protorasizam«, »uobičajeni u grčko-rimskom svijetu« i da su »ovi rani oblici bili prototip za moderni rasizam koji je razvijen u osamnaestom stoljeću«. U analizi odnosa između antičkog i modernog rasizma, Isaac piše da »rasizam u dvadesetom stoljeću ne bi mogao postojati bez svojih prethodnika«. On smatra da kao štoje grčkorimski protorasizam doprinio oblikovanju teorija o rasi u osamnaestom stoljeću, neke ideje koje su cirkulirale u tom stoljeću ugrađene su u kasnije rasističke diskurse.

The Contribution of Disability Studies to the New Humanities

Disability studies is deeply connected with the disability rights movement, and some of the pioneers of the movement were disabled academics. It is an area of study that draws from different disciplines, especially the social sciences and the humanities, while having its own unique character. The insights gained from disability studies are embedded in the direct experiences of disabled people and their family members and are based on an understanding of disability as arising from the interaction between people with impairments and socially created material and cultural barriers. This understanding enables the study of disability through the different disciplines within the humanities, such as philosophy, history and literary studies. Disability studies unveils the complex nature of disability and the multifarious factors that create it and that impinge on the lived experience of disabled people. It also testifies to the many ways in which disabled people negotiate their lives and identities as disabled people. For this reason, disability studies has much to reveal about the human condition and can contribute to current and future developments in the humanities.
