Rediscovering past narrations: The oral history of the Romanian language preserved in the National Phonogram Archive

Author(s): Oana Niculescu,Maria Marin,Daniela Răuţu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

In this paper we aim to deliver a key message related to the safeguarding of the Romanian National Phonogram Archive (AFLR). The data gathered within the Archive (the richest, most inclusive and diversified collection of dialectal texts and ethno-linguistic recordings in Romania) are of immeasurable documentary value. Through the digitization and preservation of AFLR we can gain access to both individual and collective memories, aiding to a better understanding of our cultural heritage on the one hand, and, on the other hand, restoring missing or forgotten pieces of Europe’s oral history.

Gullah as a literary dialect: Phonological and morphosyntactic features in 19th century writings. A case study

Gullah as a literary dialect: Phonological and morphosyntactic features in 19th century writings. A case study

Author(s): Costin-Valentin Oancea / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Starting from the 18th century, writers began using Gullah in different stories and plays, and speculated about its origins. Gullah is an American English-based creole spoken along the coast of Georgia, South Carolina and in the Sea Islands. It is also known as Sea Island Creole or Geechee. Several American writers have used this creole in their writings. This paper focuses on the way Edgar Allan Poe used Gullah as a literary dialect, in the short story The Gold-Bug, to render the speech of Jupiter, an old Negro slave. The first part of the paper presents phonological and morphosyntactic features that have been attested in Gullah. The second part of this study analyzes the phonological and morphosyntactic features found in the speech of Jupiter and attempts to demonstrate that Jupiter used the regional superstrate variety of Gullah, as expected from house servants. It will also be shown that Jupiter’s speech also contains many features found in Gullah’s sister variety, African American Vernacular English.

THE ENGLISH INFLUENCE ON THE ROMANIAN MEDIATIC LANGUAGE

THE ENGLISH INFLUENCE ON THE ROMANIAN MEDIATIC LANGUAGE

Author(s): Mihaela Mureșan / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

The appearance of Anglicisms in the Romanian language was determined by the need to designate new extralinguistic realities. Anglicization presents itself as a trend in current languages to allow the influence of English, especially in the vocabulary domain, thus manifesting as a superstratum element. There are Anglicisms used in different variants by speakers or encountered in Romanian media language with changing or fluctuating forms. Currently, we are witnessing a massive influx of Anglicisms into Romanian media language and spoken language, and some of these English words are in the process of entering the lexical fund of the Romanian language, being widely used by speakers.

MEDIATIC LANGUAGE AS A MIRROR FOR EXPLORING THE LINGUISTIC MARKET

Author(s): Mihaela Mureșan / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

Mass-media represents "a true laboratory where linguistic innovations”, and at the same time, journalistic language becomes a true technique for "exploring the linguistic market," as it is extremely conclusive, with both dynamic and varied tendencies, and great receptivity regarding linguistic innovation. In media texts, there is a massive penetration of anglicisms. The anglicisms used in Romanian media language are diverse both in terms of form, purpose, and the terminologies they belong to. Therefore, the mediatic language reflects clearly the linguistic trends of the Romanian speakers.

Islamic Theolinguistics in the Context of Interdisciplinary Research: Religious Thoughts and Communication in a Multilingual Space

Author(s): Patimat Magomedova / Language(s): English,Russian,Avaric,Arabic Issue: 28/2023

The article is devoted to the consideration of some issues of an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that has emerged relatively recently at the junction of theology and linguistics – theolinguistics. The relevance of the research is determined by the demand for new interdisciplinary scientific developments explaining the mechanisms of explication of religious concepts in linguoculture, representing a comparative picture of the integration of linguistic conceptual and theocentric aspects of the description of different structured languages. The main purpose of the article is to present the experience of reconstructing the religious (Islamic) concept as a value-cognitive and ideological constant on the example of the concept of Haram/ХIарам in Russian and Avar linguistic cultures. At the same time, structural and substantive similarities and differences in the reflection and consolidation of certain religious content in languages are established, which makes it possible to build an adequate invariant model of the concept under study in the context of comparative theolinguistics. Similarities and differences may depend, first of all, on the specifics of a person's religious-linguistic consciousness, his perception of the world; secondly, they may be due to the discourse in which the concept is explicated, and therefore objectification takes place in different pictures of the world (religious, everyday (naive), etc.), cognitive-semantic, communicative-pragmatic and sociolinguistic mechanisms of realization of theological thought and modeling of religious communication in Russian-speaking Islamic discourse. Based on the assertion that common basic religious concepts are found in the national languages of different ethnic groups professing the same confession, it can be suggested that representatives of different ethnic groups find unity in spiritual terms, common in mentality, worldview and world perception; they are united by a single religious language, a single faith and love for a single God. The similarities in the compared linguistic cultures are represented by the conceptual component of the concept of Haram, the differences are determined by the value component and the scale of the semantics of the representative lexemes. The concept frame Haram is a concept with a multilevel structure, which creates, firstly, difficulties in reconstructing the concept, calculating the model of the concept under study, and secondly, difficulties in adequately translating it from Arabic into Russian and Avar languages. The interpretation of religious concepts seems to be a complex and ambiguous process, involving the complex application of linguosemiotic, linguoculturological and theoconceptual approaches in the study of linguistic phenomena.

LINGUISTIC ELEMENTS IN ONLINE BANKING ADVERTISEMENTS ON FACEBOOK, THE SYNTACTIC CHOICE BEHIND CIALDINI’S PRINCIPLES OF PERSUASION

Author(s): Amelia Maria Vaida / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

This article explores the interconnectedness between the seven principles of persuasion put forward by Robert Cialdini and the syntactic choices behind them. It begins with a theoretical presentation of the principles and then it delves into the linguistic elements encountered in banking advertisements on Facebook, with a focus on types of sentences and word choice. The core of the article is an empirical examination of three advertisements, pertaining to three different years within the COVID-19 pandemics, 2020, 2021 and 2022, which certifies the intertwining of the seven principles with certain words and sentences types.

ENGLISH BORROWINGS IN ONLINE BANKING ADVERTISEMENTS – A NECESSITY OR A PERSUASION TOOL? A CASE STUDY ON TRANSILVANIA BANK

Author(s): Amelia Maria Vaida / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

At present globalization stands out as one of the main features of society. It permeates all sectors of life and one of its effects is the ubiquitous use of English borrowings. This article casts light on the reasons why English borrowings are used in online advertisements of Transylvania Bank. The study begins with a theoretical framework of the English borrowings and then it delves into the reasons why they are intentionally incorporated in the advertising texts, although the Romanian language offers alternatives for all the English terms encountered. English borrowings are preferred to the detriment of Romanian words, as they convey a sense of modernity, of prestige, of blending with contemporary times, increasing visibility and liking, ultimately having the purpose of persuasion.

THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PROJECTIONS ON ADVERBS AND MODAL PARTICLES IN ROMANIAN AND GERMAN TABLOIDS

THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PROJECTIONS ON ADVERBS AND MODAL PARTICLES IN ROMANIAN AND GERMAN TABLOIDS

Author(s): Emanuela Păduraru / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

The theoretical presentation will be followed by examples extracted from the tabloids proposed for analysis. They will include sequences of lexical-grammatical modalizers, modal adverbs (and adverbial locutions) in Romanian and modal particles in German and their role from a morphological, syntactic and pragmatic perspective. The deontic, epistemic and volitional modality points out the degree of obligation or permissiveness of the above mentioned situations which entail a non-assertive character through linguistic sequences, achieving directive-type language acts (order, exhortation).

TOPONYMY OF THE BISTRICIOARA RIVER VALLEY

TOPONYMY OF THE BISTRICIOARA RIVER VALLEY

Author(s): Carmen-Maria Citirigă (Țepeș) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

This study focuses on toponymy in a mountainous region with limited natural resources, with an emphasis on the Bistricioara Valley. It begins by mentioning the origin of the term "toponymy" and the various names used interchangeably for the same field of study. The geographical features of the area are highlighted, showing that in ancient times, the places were less populated, with archaeological evidence of nomadic communities. The study refers to the first toponyms of the region, such as "Ceahlău," and presents historical sources that attest to these names. Various current and historical toponyms reflecting the characteristics of the terrain, relief, and waters in the area are mentioned. The classifications and structures of toponyms are explored, indicating their diversity, such as simple or compound, primary or secondary. Various etymological influences are highlighted, including Latin, Slavic, and Hungarian. The research includes examples of compound toponyms, from those indicating landforms and water to those incorporating prepositions or prepositional phrases.

EWOLUCJA WZORCA GATUNKOWEGO PRZEPISU KULINARNEGO

Author(s): Izabela Kuśnierek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2023

The culinary recipe is a genre that has undergone numerous modifications related to its transmission medium over the centuries. Originally, it functioned in the oral form, but with the development of writing, it began to appear in the written form as well. After the invention of audiovisual media, cooking advice began to be made available via television and, over time, also via the Internet (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok). The first recipes were formulated by people widely regarded as authorities, but later any Internet user could become a creator. The type of audience has also changed. The passive reader has become an active and dynamic co-creator of culinary advice.

ASPECTS HUMORISTIQUES DES CHRONIQUES DE FOUAD LAROUI : LE CAS DE L’ANGLAIS QUI VEUT SAUVER AL HOCEIMA

Author(s): Elarbi ELBAKKALI / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2023

The paper addresses some humorous aspects of the writer Fouad Laroui’s chronicles posted on the French-speaking Moroccan information site Le360. To this end, our analysis focuses on an article published on August 3, 2016: The Englishman who wants to save Al Hoceima. We seek to detect all the characteristics of the irony that the author adopts each time to create humour in the eyes of the reader. In principle, the humorous statement depends radically on the social and psychological identity of the speakers. As already mentioned, our analysis of Laroui's chronicle focuses on narrative irony, more specifically, its tools and characteristics

L'ÉVOLUTION DU DISCOURS POLITIQUE À L'ÈRE DU NUMÉRIQUE : ANALYSER L’UTILISATION DE LA SATIRE POLITIQUE SUR LES PLATEFORMES NUMÉRIQUES AU MAROC

Author(s): Hassan HABIBI,Aymen NASSIF / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2023

Without a shadow of a doubt, the rise of digital media has revolutionised the information process at multiple levels. Nowadays, internet users can comment, criticise, and shape news in just a few clicks. In this dynamic environment, political caricature is reinventing itself on new media platforms, replacing traditional sketching with more advanced software. Interestingly, this form of expression is no longer exclusive to professional illustrators. Internet users have embraced it to express their views on political news in a playful and ironic tone. This paper aims to analyse this discourse, using parodies, satirical illustrations, and nicknames to criticize the political landscape in Morocco.

UNE ANNÉE CHEZ LES FRANÇAIS DE FOUAD LAROUI : UN DRAME ENTRE HUMOUR ET IRONIE

UNE ANNÉE CHEZ LES FRANÇAIS DE FOUAD LAROUI : UN DRAME ENTRE HUMOUR ET IRONIE

Author(s): Amine MARTAH / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2023

The reader laughs while reading Fouad LAROUI’s novels. Yet, his writings are far from being comic, they are utterly serious, very serious, in fact; we laugh about serious things! This, paradoxically, raises the question of the laugher himself, with extreme acuteness. This reversed perspective brings us to some essential issues in the work of this author and his conception of art. We shall analyse the novel Une Année chez les Français, focusing essentially on the comic devices and the traces of the irony. We shall unravel the functioning of the text which comes in various layers: from an intuition of the reader which triggers laughter in the beginning, next arousing a cautious laugh, to eventually suspending laughter when the mechanism turns against the reader himself.

LE MOUVEMENT DE PROTESTATION COMME LIEU DE CONSTRUCTION DU DISCOURS ÉMOTIONNEL DES ALGÉRIENS

Author(s): Kamila OULEBSIR-OUKIL,Fadila OULEBSIR / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

This contribution studies the expression of emotions in the digital discourse produced around the Algerian Hirak. From a corpus of posts and comments on Facebook and videos on Youtube, we propose to analyze, on an enunciative and pragmatic level, the expression of emotion through the strategies employed by writers. To do this, we study, on different levels, the elements allowing to characterize the emotional dimension of the speeches analyzes. These levels ensure a complexity of emotional speech and invite us to scrutinize emotion through referential erasure, dialogism, speech acts as well as elements relating to technodiscourse.

APPROCHES PHILOSOPHIQUES ET LINGUISTIQUES SUR LE SENS : LES ÉMOTIONS

APPROCHES PHILOSOPHIQUES ET LINGUISTIQUES SUR LE SENS : LES ÉMOTIONS

Author(s): Marta TORDESILLAS / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

The study of emotions is both a complex and heterogeneous field. Hence, it proves necessary to proceed to a multidisciplinary approach and to analyze the evolution of the historical context of the concept of emotion, which has become for years a topical issue in scientific research. Nowadays, moreover, emotions are a contemporary challenge to progress, in many disciplines, including health, technology or robotics. In this context, it should be noted that the development of these fields is directly interrelated to language sciences. Indeed, any form of semiotic or semantic expression would be likely to be linked to the conceptualisation of notions of meaning and significance, especially when formulating the hypothesis that emotions are part of the configuration of language. Their identification, description and categorisation will promote not only knowledge of their functioning and their role in any verbal exchange, in any human interaction, but also their programming and use in related sciences. In this paper, our aim is to highlight how the idea of emotion has been grasped, described and constructed by philosophers and linguists throughout the history of philosophical and scientific thinking and also to update linguistic research.

PLAISIR ET BONHEUR DANS LA PEAU DE CHAGRIN

PLAISIR ET BONHEUR DANS LA PEAU DE CHAGRIN

Author(s): Paul Matei Christian Botez / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

The first best seller of Balzac, the novel La Peau de Chagrin (1831) features more than a fantastic story about a pact with the devil and the destructive consequences it brings about. In reality, the adventure of the young intellectual Raphaël de Valentin reveals a moral and ontological significance, relying on the choice between an active life of frivolous pleasures and a calm life of domestic happiness. In this paper, we shall examine how the tragic destiny of the protagonist derives from his confusion between enduring happiness and the ephemeral pleasure offered by a hedonistic lifestyle, all within the social context of the birth of capitalism in the early 19th century.

CASTIGAT RIDENDO MORES - ANALYSE DE L’HUMOUR NOIR DE LA PRESSE ROUMAINE SUR NOS POLITICIENS PENDANT LA QUATRIÈME VAGUE PANDÉMIQUE

Author(s): Anda-Irina Radulescu / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2022

A protean genre, difficult to frame and analyse, humor manifests itself, among others, in laughter, an expression of a feeling of fun and gaiety. Apart from its obvious social function, laughter also performs an educational and cathartic function, as long as by mocking at the faults of others, one corrects them. Based on a series of articles published between September-November 2021 by some Romanian daily newspapers, we review some forms of derision and humor in relation to Romanian politicians, including puns, cultural allusions, malicious nicknames and coinages. The working hypothesis is that laughing at the political power, whatever its form (mockery, irony, black humor, sarcasm, pamphlet, etc.) is a sort of protest, of virulent criticism of political decisions of the moment and that, despite the political, health and energy crisis that our country is going through, the Romanians have not lost their sense of humour.

"GETTING IT ACROSS THE TABLE":THE "MANIFESTLY" DISCOURSE ADVERBIALS REVISITED

"GETTING IT ACROSS THE TABLE":THE "MANIFESTLY" DISCOURSE ADVERBIALS REVISITED

Author(s): Marija Mišković-Luković / Language(s): English Issue: 81/2023

The paper reconsiders the semantic and pragmatic roles of a subset of parenthetical linguistic expressions that typically go under a general heading of sentence (or sentential) adverbs (or adverbials) or pragmatic markers. The subset comprises expressions that encode the speaker’s strongest subjective stance to the proposition expressed by the utterance (e.g. the English expressions obviously, clearly, evidently, certainly and surely, and their Serbian counterparts očigledno, jasno, sigurno and svakako). Given the main, theoretic, orientation of the paper, however, the contrastive issue had to be neglected. Still, the paper gives an impetus for contrastive studies, in particular, regarding the encoded linguistic meaning in relation to interactional import. An accumulation of contrastive data, and analyses thereof, will contribute not only to re-evaluating and refining what we have come to know about encoded meaning, but also, and more importantly, to solving the contentious issue of the strict conceptual/procedural dichotomy.
