THE THEORY OF “ECONOMIC COMPLEXITY AND PRODUCT SPACE”: WHAT IT MEANS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN GENERAL, AND FOR BULGARIA IN SPECIFIC

THE THEORY OF “ECONOMIC COMPLEXITY AND PRODUCT SPACE”: WHAT IT MEANS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN GENERAL, AND FOR BULGARIA IN SPECIFIC

Author(s): Geert M.J. Termeer / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

Ricardo Hausmann (Harvard University) and Cesar Hidalgo (MIT) developed the “Economic Complexity and Product Space” theory, which is based on their findings that the cumulative amount of knowledge in a country is central to the overall economic development of that country. They found that highly developed countries produce and export many different products and services, and in addition produce products and services of a high complexity. Their theory is made concrete and visualized in the “Atlas of Economic Complexity”, also referred to as the “Observatory of Economic Complexity”, which offers useful tools like: the Economic Complexity Index (ECI), which expresses the quantity of complexity of a country; the Product Complexity Index (PCI), which expresses the complexity of a product; the Product Space, which visualizes how many different products a country exports, and in what complexity; the Complexity Outlook Index, which expresses the value of the option to move into more and more complex products, given how far they are from a country’s current position in the Product Space. The Atlas hence translates the theory in concrete tools, useful for countries, regions and companies, which want to speed up their economic development. In this article we present the theory; highlight the useful tools; mention some improvements the scholars still want to develop; and provide some recommendations based on the theory of Economic Complexity and Product Space in general, as well as for Bulgaria.

These problems raise the relevance of the role of literacy and education of voters when exercising their constitutional rights.

Exploring bivariate correlations in cyber risk on an industrial level: empirical evidence from Greece and the European economic area

Exploring bivariate correlations in cyber risk on an industrial level: empirical evidence from Greece and the European economic area

Author(s): Maria Koutsari / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

In the rapidly evolving domain of cybercrime, understanding the intricate dynamics between industry-specific characteristics and cyber risk ramifications is critical for developing robust risk management strategies. This study delves into the bivariate relationships between annual cyber-attack rates and various industry attributes. Utilizing time-series data as well as both Pearson and Kendall correlation analyses, we assess the linear and ordinal associations across a comprehensive dataset encompassing multiple industries. Our findings reveal that the telecommunications and digital infrastructure industries display a significant inverse relationship between cyber incident rates and systemic risk, an unexpected observation indicating that improved awareness or control of systemic risk may lead to reduced incident rates. On the other hand, the banking sector's direct correlation suggests that as systemic risk rises, so do incident rates, likely because of the sector's attractive high-value data targets. The outcomes of this bivariate exploration complement our previous empirical analysis presented in the article The Financial Impact of Cyber Risk: Empirical Evidence from Greece and the European Economic Area, conducted by the same author, offering a granular view of the cyber risk landscape. This paper aims to inform stakeholders on the pivotal interactions between industrial dynamics and cybersecurity outcomes, fostering informed strategies to mitigate risk and safeguard economic interests.
