Scholia from Gregory of Nyssa’s Apologia in Hexaemeron in the Fourteenth-Century Slavonic Hexaemeron Collection

The present article provides a critical edition of some of the scholia interpolated in the 14th-century South Slavonic translation of Basil of Caesarea’s Homiliae in Hexaemeron (CPG 2835), viz. six fragments from Gregory of Nyssa’s Apologia in Hexaemeron. These fragments correspond to marginalia in a number of Greek text witnesses from the 10th and 11th centuries. The Slavonic evidence is analysed in the light of the Greek manuscript tradition, viz. on the basis of the Apologia edition of H. R. Drobner (2009) and a collation of the Greek manuscripts Codex Florentinus Laurentianus gr. IV.27 (A3) and Codex Oxoniensis Bodleianus Baroccianus gr. 228 (E6).

The Kievan Manuscript of Synopsis Basilicorum major

The aim of this article is to provide a basis for evaluation of the place of a new Greek witness in the manuscript tradition of a major source for the history of Byzantine Law – the Synopsis Basilicorum major. The author describes exhaustively the main texts and scholia in cod. Kiev, National Library of Ukraine, Φ. I № 137/2. His new comprehensive description supplements and corrects the one published in a recent catalogue by Ievhen Chernukhin.

The Neapolitan Wall Calendar From a Medieval Slavic Perspective

This paper examines correspondences between unusual saints’ commemorations in the 9th-century Latin Neapolitan Wall Calendar and medieval Slavic calendars of saints, focusing on the menology to the Bulgarian Apostolus No. 882, the Zograph Trephologion (Draganov Menaion) and Palauzov Menaion, and the menology to the Ohrid Apostol. The analysis is based on data from Archimandrite Sergij’s collation of Slavic and Greek calendars of saints, and from the author’s electronic menology collation, for which Professor David J. Birnbaum developed the digital blueprint.

This paper offers an account of the various causes for the variety of symbols used in the representation of word-final soft consonants in the Romanian Linguistic Atlas. Comparison is drawn between lexical forms as recorded by members of a Romanian research team in the beginning of the 20th century in the town of Bregovo (Vidin region) and current forms used in the Walachian dialect spoken in the far North-West of Bulgaria.

The Slavonic text of „Oration about the advent of Christ”, on which is dedicated this article is found in manuscript №11, in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, dating back to the end of ХІV. The name of the manuscript is „Златая цепь / Zlataya tsepj”. Two Greek sources were found, which were considered in the offered edition of the oration. The oration is accepted as a work created on Slavonic ground.

The impartial analysis of “Istoria slavyanobalgarska” shows that Paisiy’s language can not be fully related neither to Church-Slavonic, nor to colloquial Bulgarian. In epilogue Paisiy presents his linguistic scheme and standard by defining the language of his “Istoria slavyanobalgarska” as Slavonic-Bulgarian – a new linguistic hybrid which has been present in the Bulgarian literature till the 1840s. The linguistic hybrids strengthen their position in the Bulgarian and Serbian historiography and mark the period between the decline of the Church-Slavonic tradition and the beginning of the linguistic revival.

Teaching Slavonic in 17th century Romania: teaching material by Staico, professor at Târgoviște

The aim of this study is to present, based on the Rom. ms. 312 from the Academy Library in Bucharest, the teaching material used by a teacher of Slavonic in the second half of the 17th century. Rom. ms. 312 BAR is well-known particularly because it contains the largest dictionary belonging to the group of the first bilingual Romanian dictionaries. The elaboration of these dictionaries should be considered in relation to the political and cultural context of the reign of Matei Basarab, in a period in which Wallachia was influenced by the cultural prestige of Kyiv and of the metropolitan Petru Movilă, who influenced the cultural development of the Romanian Principalities. Matei Basarab wanted to restore the dominance of the Slavonic language and culture, by encouraging the development of schools, among other measures. The necessary linguistic tools were provided by Kyiv, namely the Slavonic-Ruthenian lexicon and Meletius Smotrytsky’s Slavonic grammar (1619). These tools, besides being used as such in schools, provide models for the first Romanian dictionaries and the first Slavonic grammar translated into Romanian. Six Slavonic-Romanian dictionaries have survived, all written in the second half of the 17th century (except for one dating from 1649) in Wallachia, based on the Slavonic-Ruthenian lexicon published by Pamvo Berynda in 1627, which these six works adapted both in terms of the number of entries and the content of the Romanian definitions. Except for the lexicon issued in 1649, the others seem to be modified copies based on a single version. Two manuscripts containing the first Romanian bilingual lexicons also include copies after the same Romanian redaction of the Slavonic grammar. The Rom. ms. 312 comprises the lexicon, part of the grammar, and other lexicographical components, organized as additions to the main word lists. There are several studies on the content of Rom. ms. 312, yet previous research only presents it from a general perspective without much detail on its components. We shall demonstrate that its content is also more complex than that of the other lexicons, indicating and presenting its parts: the first list of words taken from the Slavonic-Ruthenian lexicon; a second list which is independent of it, but which can also be found in three of the other lexicons included in the group; three thematic lists and two lists without a specific theme, plus a dictionary of proper names translated into Slavonic, which has never been studied. Furthermore, we also present opinions on the author of the grammar included in this lexicon. A comparative analysis of the Slavonic grammar of Rom. ms. 312 and the one in Rom. ms. 3473 from the Romanian Academy Library allowed us to advance the hypothesis that these are copies of a previous writing, which was not preserved.

Caucasian and Semitic Influences in the Early Medieval Bulgarian “Runic Inscriptions”

The present article is focused on the similarities existing between some of the characters of the Caucasian Albanian script and some of the graphemes of the so called “runic inscriptions” from the 10th century Bulgarian rock monasteries from Murfatlar and Krepcha. The similarities in question do not only concern the shape of some of the “runic graphemes”. Obvious parallels between the designations of the Caucasian Albanian characters and the “ordinal numerals” from the Proto-Bulgarian calendar are discussed, too. After analyzing these similarities and making a critical discussion on the different attempts at etymologizations of “the ordinal numerals” of the calendar on the ground of the Turkic -r/-l languages, I conclude that the numerals reflect designations of letters from an unknown writing system created for some of the clan languages of the Proto-Bulgarians and partly or entirely based on Caucasian and Semitic written traditions.

The object of observation is criminal jargon from the 19th century. The description concerns lexis belonging to the thematic field religion. The text shows little known (or even unknown) historical vocabulary of the environment. The author focuses on presenting the etymology of the collected words. Some remarks on the origin of words have the character of hypotheses and are a pretext for further discussion. The author excerpts linguistic material from Słownik mowy złodziejskiej by Antoni Kurka (1896) and Szwargot więzienny by Karol Estreicher (1903, this publication gathers vocabulary from Estreicher’s works published several decades earlier). The author evaluates the stability of the vocabulary and the development of the lexis – he compares the 19th-century material with notations appearing in the later work Żargon mowy przestępczej by Wiktor Ludwikowski and Henryk Walczak (published in 1922).

TRANSLINGUISME – THE WRITER BETWEEN TWO OR MORE LANGUAGES

ИЗ ОНОМАСТИКЕ СЕЛА ДОЊА САБАНТА КОД КРАГУЈЕВЦА

The paper investigates the onomastic data collected in Donja Sabanta, Sumadija region, which administratively belongs to the municipality of Kragujevac. Microtoponyms and antroponyms (personal and family nicknames and hypocoristic names) of all the residents who live in the village, according to the information we possess, either permanently or from time to time (in order to do seasonal agricultural work on the land). In order to establish the dynamics of the antropomasticons from the village of Donja Sabanta we have consulted the birth register, and thus compared the system of personal first names of the people born between 1930 and 1960 and those born between 1990 and 2020. The aim of this paper is to list all the toponyms and antroponyms and analyses them from the structural and semantic aspect. The secondary aim is to describe the stability and changes in the system of official names of the residents of the village Donja Sabanta.The collected microtoponyms are motivated by the versatile natural and cultural characteristics of the physiogenous and antropgenous phenomena in the village. In the formation of the microtoponyms in Donja Sabanta we have noticed all the deriva- tive models and suffixes which function in the toponymy of (the central) Serbia. The system of male personal nicknames stands out within the system of antroponymous categories by its numerousness and versatility. Apart from -a forms, which are domi- nant in Sumadija, a significant number of male hypocoristic names ending in -o has been confirmed (Pero, Aco and similar).At the end of the paper we enclose a register in alphabetical order of microtoponyms and antroponyms which were collected in the field.
