Ehrendekrete aus Messambria Pontica (3. Jh.v.u.Z.)

Author(s): Velizar Velkov / Language(s): German Issue: 19/2011

In the proposed paper the author has published for the first time two of the Greeks inscriptions found by him and Ivan Venedikov during archaeological excavations conducted by them between 1958 and 1970. The first inscription is the upper part of a marble slab and it contains an honorary decree concerning more than one – possibly two – citizens of the city of Neapolis (or Neopolis, accordingly). It is interesting to note the absence of reference to “the city council and the people” of Messambria. Some privileges are not expressed with their full text in the inscription, which complicated the reconstruction of the damaged or missing text. The author assumes that Neapolis from the decree was the same city as that on the Aegean Sea (in the present-day Kavala in Greece). The second decree was issued in honour of the ancestors of Dionysios, son of Omphalion, who held important posts in the city. His father occupied the priestly position of hieromnemon (hieromnamon in the Doric cities). That occupation appeared for the first time here in the colonies along the Western Black Sea coast. Both inscriptions should be dated to the 3rd century BC.

МОСКОВСКАЯ ШКОЛА БАЛКАНСКОЙ ЛИНГВИСТИКИ: ОСНОВНЫЕ ВЕХИ

Author(s): Maksim Makartsev,Irina Aleksandrovna Sedakova,Tatjana Civjan / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2020

The Moscow school of Balkan linguistics originated in the Institute of Slavic Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences) in the 1960s. It brought together a number of researchers who combined their interest in Balkan synchrony with their deep expertise in diachrony as well as broad competence in linguistics, semiotics, literature, folklore, and ethnology. These researchers’ contributions have been published in periodicals established by the Institute, including “Slavic and Balkan Folklore” (Slavyanskiy i balkanskiy fol’klor), “Slavic and Balkan Linguistics” (Slavyanskoe i balkanskoe jazykoznanie), “Series Balcanica” (Balkanskie chteniya), “Centre of Linguocultural Research “Balcanica”. Proceedings of Round Tables” (Materialy kruglogo stola CLI “Balcanica”), as well as in a number of monographs and collected volumes. Since 2008, the main unit within the Institute organizing the events and publications in the field of Balkan linguistics is the Centre of Linguocultural Research “Balcanica”. The central concept of the school is the so-called “mediate language” (“jazyk-posrednik”), an abstract system of symbols that 1) facilitates the most efficient description of any given Balkan language within the framework of all other Balkan languages and 2) provides a set of cost-effective algorithms to transform sentences (or texts) of a Balkan language into any other Balkan language. In the first part of this study the authors analyze the main publications and conferences within the framework of the Moscow school of Balkan linguistics during the last 60 years, focusing mostly on the problems of grammar typology and highlighting the current trends in the field. We specifically dwell upon contributions in the field of verbal and nominal systems of the Balkan languages, functional words, and lexicon, as well as outline the current trends that define the development of Balkan studies in the first twenty years of the 21st century.

South Slavic-Ukrainian Phonetic and Graphic Variability in Religious Monuments of the 14th–15th Century

Author(s): Inna Tsaralunga / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

As a result of the analysis of liturgical texts of the 14th–15th centuries created in the territory of Ukraine, expressive signs of interaction between the Old Bulgarian graphic and spelling system and the Ukrainian folk speech are recorded. Manifestations of the phonetic and graphic South Slavic-Ukrainian variability are associated with the following linguistic phenomena in the vocalism and consonantism of religious monuments: continuity of the former*ę,*’а and *Q; change of the initial *jе into о; transition of e into o after hushings and ц; reduction of и > ь before iotated vowels; confusion of unstressed и and е; development of sound combinations *tоrt, *tоlt, *tеrt, *tеlt; reflexes of sound combinations ър, ъл, ьр, ьл; hardening of р'; hardness/softness of hushing consonants; dissimilation and simplification of consonants; change of sound combinations *dj, *zdj and *tj, *kt . In the phonetic system of the studied monuments, the interaction of the traditional writing of that time and the local vernacular is observed, in particular, the phonetic features of the North Ukrainian and the South-West Ukrainian dialects are revealed. The study of the language of religious monuments taking into account the results of other research in the field of philology, paleography, theology has undeniable prospects for linguistic interpretation of church books with the definition of local language traditions of the time, their localization as elements of the Slavic written culture, resolving debatable issues regarding the formation, chronology and systematization of the church-written corpus.

Stan języka ukraińskiego po odzyskaniu przez
Ukrainę niepodległości w sierpniu 1991 roku

Stan języka ukraińskiego po odzyskaniu przez Ukrainę niepodległości w sierpniu 1991 roku

Author(s): Bożena Zinkiewicz-Tomanek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1&2/2016

// The article discusses changes in Ukrainian after Ukraine had regained independence. Prior to 1991, the Soviet authorities – apart from various prohibitions known from the time of Russian tsars – had created a system of interfering in internal laws of language, prohibiting certain words, syntactic constructions or orthographic rules, and propagating others, closer to Russian, which had a virtually dominating position in nearly all fields. This led to an abnormal linguistic situation, the unconscious fusing of Ukrainian and Russian, both at the level of phonetics and morphology as well as syntactic norms and collocations. That is why, after 1991 – apart from changes in the lexical system, associated with developments in science, technology and political and economic transformations – we can observe the tendency to depart from Russified forms, which violate the norms of Ukrainian literary language, and to return to old native linguistic traditions.

Puritan Projections in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" and Stephen King's "Carrie"

Puritan Projections in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" and Stephen King's "Carrie"

Author(s): Maria Anastasova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

It is considered that the Puritans that populated New England in the 17th century left a distinctive mark on the American culture. The article explores some projections of Puritan legacy in two American novels of different periods – Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850) and Stephen King’s Carrie (1974). After establishing a connection between the Puritan writings and gothic literature, the two novels are analyzed in terms of some Puritan projections, among which are the problem of guilt and the acceptance of an individual in the society. Some references regarding the idea of the witch and the interpretations it bears, especially in terms of the female identity, are also identified. Despite the different approach of the authors in terms of building their characters, those references are mostly used in a negative way, as an instrument of criticism and exposing inconvenient truths.

W cieniu gilotyny. O estetycznych, obyczajowych i społecznych uwarunkowaniach powstania melodramatu

Author(s): Tomasz Wysłobocki / Language(s): Polish Issue: 11/2020

The main goal of the article is to inscribe the formation, at the turn of the 18th century, of the melodrama in a broader context in order to show that the creation of this dramatic genre was not a result of one man’s talent or pure coincidence but actually a result of the historical process and numerous social and aesthetic tendencies that had been influencing the French theatre over previous decades. All these transformations that would eventually get compounded into melodrama, appearing throughout the century, have been observed and commented on, demonstrating once again that theatre is a never-ending story of making and becoming.

ARAPSKE GRAMATIČKE ŠKOLE KLASIČNOG PERIODA - POGLED U NASTANAK I RAZVOJ

Author(s): Jusuf Ramić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 16/2012

The paper deals with the origin and development of classical grammar school: Basra, Kufa and Baghdad. The cause of their creation is mistakes in speaking and reading of the Qur'anic text. All examples of these errors and biographies of the grammarians, with some minor modifications, are taken from the introduction to the work Dirasatun tatbiqijje fin-nahw ve-Sarf. The author of the work is Professor Abdu l-Semi 'Shaban, my professor at the undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Cairo. The paper presents translation of the introduction to this work. In this paper, we meet a number of clients who have studied Arabic grammar, so hence this science is often referred to as the science of clients or residents. The work is full of controversies between al-Kisa'i and al-Jezidi and between al-Muberrid and Sa'leba, and one of the sharpest controversies was conducted between Sibevejh and al-Kisa'i in the presence of the Caliph, and other officials in which al-Kisa'i was declared the winner. It was a political judgment. Kufa was closer to Baghdad, geographically and politically. The Grammarians of Kufa were closer to the court than the grammarians of Basra.

Lexic de Origine Latină în Scrieri Din Epoca Veche a Românei Literare: Între uz Relativ Restrâns și Expresivitate

Author(s): Carmen Livia Tudor / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2020

The subject treated by us in the present study reflects the analysis done on some lexical elements of Latin origin extracted for interpretation from "Manuscript 67" from the Library of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest. It contains the complete translation from the Slavonic language of the book "Ithica Ieropolitica" by the monk scholar Vartolomei Măzăreanu, in 1764. In interpreting lexical elements, after the etymology of one term or another is established, the meaning of the words is taken into account, where the context requires it. In most cases, the etymologies were extracted in particular from reference dictionaries such as DA and DLR, in order to determine precisely the lexical elements under study here. The terms encountered in the work of the archimandrite Vartolomei Măzăreanu were selected starting from a semantic dissociation, possible to see clearly, from certain locations, expressions and syntagms in which different lexemes appear attested. Regarding the aspect in which I chose to group the terms, in order not to resemble the way of presenting a dictionary, they were ordered according to their origin, in this case, in elements of Latin origin which, on one hand, they are no longer met in the modern version of the literary Romanian or which have a very limited use, being little known, obsolete or preserved only in certain dialect areas, and, on the other hand, in words created on Romanian land, also derived from words of Latin origin.

The article discusses a number of set phrases incorporated in the text of the Bible. The author focuses on the history of the units: a heart of stone, an eye for an eye, and to hide one’s light under bushel. The different traditions and the primary contexts in which they were initially used are shown and also some of the most significant transformations of their meanings up to the present day were analysed. Although their antiquity supposed only hypothetical findings, the discussed connections with ancient cultures pile specific connotations on their meanings.

Cross-Cultural Communication and Linguistic Cross-Fertilization: Yiddish and its Survival under the Israeli Language

Author(s): Ghil`ad Zuckermann / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

This article introduces cross-cultural communication and linguistic cross-fertilization by exploring the fascinating and multifaceted Yiddish language and its survival in Israeli, the result of the fin-de-siècle Hebrew revival. Yiddish is a 1,000-year-old Germanic language with Latin, Hebrew, and Aramaic substrates, with most dialects having been influenced by Slavonic languages. Yiddish is characterized by a unique style that embeds psycho-ostensive expressions throughout its discourse.

According to ancient authors, the ordering of the Thracian ethnicities from the Bosporus/Bosphorus to the east along the Anatolian Black Sea Coast is as follows: Bithynians, Thynians, Mariandinians, Tibarenes, Halybes, Mosynoikes and Paphlagones. Located on the map, they are identified in modern settlements and sites: Kefken, Eregli, Amasra, Sinop, Hissar, Akliman, Ikiztepe, Ordu, Trabzon. In and around them were observed interesting topographical locations associated with objects from the Thracian times.
