Kwestia żydowska

Author(s): Berel Lang / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2015

This is a Polish translation of a chapter from Berel Lang’s latest book, Primo Levi: The Matter of a Life, published by Yale University Press in 2013. Primo Levi (1919-1987), an Italian Jewish chemist and writer, is best known for his autobiographical accounts of his experiences at Auschwitz. His best known works, Se questo è un uomo [1947; If This Is a Man] and I sommersi e i salvati [1986; The Drowned and the Saved], present philosophical reflections on people’s behaviour and reactions in liminal situations. This chapter from Lang’s book deals with Levi’s sense of identity and the impact that his camp experience had on his understanding of Jewishness.

Kako su postali stranci.

Author(s): Fouad A. Ajami / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 20/2015

Author(s): Dmitry Shmonin / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2016

The author analyzes the religious elements in the Classical teaching models and the theory and practice of Jewish education, which are considered in the context of the formation of the Christian upbringing and education. The latter reflects a fundamentally new religious-eschatological perspective of human life and stimulating of social and cultural transcoding including changes in rational traditions (in theory), in image of a person's actions (in practice) and, as a consequence, in the emergence of new motivational aspects of education (pedagogy). As a result, in the 6–9th centuries we observe building a new Christian (Scholastic) educational paradigm with the Christian worldview, rationalistic scientific tradition and the idea of systemic productive knowledge as its basic constituents.

Author(s): Igor Tantlevskij / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2016

The author assumes that Spinoza correlated his notion Natura naturans with Hebrew term tôleḏeṯ / tôlāḏāh (var.: tôlāḏ), i.e., according to its root, the “Nature as begetting”; as for his notion Natura naturata, he could correlate it with the Hebrew term ṭeḇaʿ, i.e., according to its root, the “Nature as imprint”.

Ślady literatury i kultury jidysz w prasie niemieckojęzycznej na łamach czasopisma „Die Welt” z 1914 roku

Author(s): Katarzyna Cena-Rusnak / Language(s): Polish,German Issue: 6/2013

Schulz i Lilien

Author(s): Piotr Sitkiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 6/2015

Although at first sight it is difficult to find clear connections between their art, in hisessay Schulz expresses his admiration for Lilien’s work and prompts the reader how their respective imaginary worlds come together. The main reason for Schulz’s admirationis the myth of childhood, which the writer cherished so much. Besides, he perceivedLilien as an artist who in his works expressed important currents in the political thoughto f his times and changes in the collective identity of Jews creating their own state in theland of Israel after centuries of living in diaspora. Thus Lilien is a spokesman of hispeople, a kind of medium through which the spirit of the age and history can express itself. He is also a great mythmaker.

Analogie i genealogie modlitwy w trzech religiach monoteistycznych

Author(s): Barbara Marcinkowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2016

Prayer is one of the most essential expression of the cult existing in every religion. On account of differences taking place in individual religions, and also historical, geografical and cultural conditionings, the prayer donned different forms and means of expression. In this article there have been featured the analogies between prayer in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Israel’s prayer resulted from the fact of affiliation with jewish nation with which the God transacted the covenant. Perpetuating the conditions of this covenant constituted the guarantee for the believing human being that his prayer will be listened. The Christian prayer’s property is it’s giving direction to a person and Christ’s saving work; His mediation constitutes the guarantee of effectiveness therefore. Prayer in Islam constitutes one of the five pillars, meaning elementary obligations, which abiding is the condition of the salvation. In spite of the differences taking place in above-mentioned religions their common feature is taking a dialogue between man and the God and also the belief that requests directed to Him will be listened.

Author(s): Evgenija Dmitrievna Zarubina / Language(s): Russian Issue: 4/2017

The current paper is devoted to analysis of codicological and compositional characteristics of two manuscripts coming from Jewish communities of early modern Modena and Venice. Two aspects of the research define its novelty. Firstly, the understanding of Italian Jewish history is essential for analysis of socioeconomic processes that took place in the eastern Mediterranean of that time. Secondly, the documents under consideration represent an understudied complex of sources, namely fraternities’ minute books. The paper has two major aims. First of them is to present collected data concerning the codicological peculiarities of the manuscripts. The second aim is to analyze the evolution of the pinkhas genre. The objectives of the research included examination of the codicological (paper, handwriting types etc.) and structural characteristics of the manuscripts. In the course of work, quantitative and codicological methods, as well as comparison with the historical context have been applied. Summarizing the results of the research, we have been able to conclude that the major structural components of the minute books are charter and dated notes. The manuscript from Venice represents the early form of the pinkhas genre, while the document from Modena belongs to the later stage. In the Modena pinkhas, the charter part is reduced and the narrative element in the dated notes is strengthened. The complex of the revealed peculiarities of the manuscripts is closely connected with the historical context of their creation. The results of the analysis are widely adaptable. Firstly, the alignment of the obtained codicological data is essential for the subsequent research of the manuscripts. Secondly, the analyzed information concerning the structure of the texts enables us to reconstruct the development of the pinkhas genre in Italy and relate it to the evolution of fraternities. Finally, the minute books make up a crucial set of sources concerning the Jewish history of the Mediterranean and studying their major compositional characteristics makes the choice of sources for any subsequent research more effective.

The Rabbinic Responsa Literature as a Source for Learning about the Religious Life during the Holocaust - Individual and Community Life

The Rabbinic Responsa Literature as a Source for Learning about the Religious Life during the Holocaust - Individual and Community Life

Author(s): Moshe Tarshansky / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

The Rabbinic Responsa literature has been developing over many centuries. This literature doesn't record theoretical systematic topics chosen by the rabbis, but rather answers to questions posed to rabbis, by persons, dealing with various real-life situations they are facing. As such, it reflects the historical conditions of life at the given time and place, and the issues the people were concerned with. Therefore this literature can be utilized as a historical source, although it was not meant to be so, and therefore it is often lacking basic historical details, such as names of those involved and dates. The Holocaust period too, produced such literature, unique due to the extreme conditions. Even in the most difficult times in the ghettos and in the concentration camps, Jews sought spiritual religious guidance and turned to Rabbis, who were expected to give immediate rulings on grievous issues dealing with life and death, with no precedent, and with no option of looking up sources in books or consulting with other rabbis. Sometimes questions and answers were recorded during the difficult times, but in most cases they were noted down by survivors after liberation. Questions were asked after the end of the war as well, dealing with consequences of the Holocaust, and also they reflect those times.

A prozeliták, avagy betérés a zsidóságba

A prozeliták, avagy betérés a zsidóságba

Author(s): Norbert Ferenc Jónás / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 2/2023

In the intertestamental period, the term “proselyte” acquired the meaning of a pagan-born individual who converted to the Jewish faith. During this era, the prerequisites for conversion were formulated, and the sequence and significance of essential ritual acts were established. The Jewish diaspora was more receptive to proselytes compared to the Palestinian context. However, Roman citizens living in major imperial cities, who held contempt for Jewish communities, viewed proselytism negatively, considering it aggressive encroachment or a political maneuver by Jews. This study enquires into the phenomenon of proselytism within rabbinic literature, Alexandrian Philo and Josephus Flavius.

A Genezis 46,8–27 szöveg- és redakciótörténete

Author(s): Vass Lehel / Language(s): Hungarian Issue: 1/2021

Genesis 46:8–27 lists the names of those who went down along with Jacob to Egypt during the famine in Canaan. However, this passage has some features that inspire to further study. These include seemingly pointless repetitions, tensions within the text and contradictions with other verses in the book of Genesis, which lead us to conclude that the text of the pericope in question has undergone significant changes over time. In this study, we will attempt to deduce possible textual layers and reconstruct the sources used, starting from the canonical text and working backwards in time.

The texts is a two-threaded story in which historical and contemporary storylines intertwine. The author describes pogroms in Western Galicia in 1870, 1898, 1918–1919 and pogroms in Eastern Galicia in 1941, commemorating their victims and showing the broader context. The highlight is a contemporary journey to Ukraine in the footsteps of the protagonists: in Zolochiv/Złoczów, Skhidnytsia/Schodnica, and Drohobych Monika Sznajderman looked for biographical and literary clues. It is also a journey in search of the first and last images experienced by Bruno Schulz. A fragment of a larger whole devoted to the Jewish history of Gorlice.

Societatea Bezalel Toeles Hamachov (1875-1923)

Author(s): Lucica Bercovici / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2023

According to the principles of the Talmudic morality, charity represents an essential duty for each member of the Jewish community, along with work and education. Although charity and contribution are part of the Jewish tradition, the Jews have never co-ooperate in a more pragmatic way than in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was due to a complex of factors, such as the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskala) and the industrial revolution, which brought them closer to the temptation of competition and the capitalist gain, the removal from the rabbinic rigour and the isolation of the ghetto, the massive Jewish immigration from the central and Eastern Europe towards the Romanian Principalities, which required the community support of the local Jews, the disorganization of the traditional instituions, requiring the emergence of some private forms of mutual aid. There are two conclusions to be drawn in the instituional evolution of the Jews in Romania during this period. The first one admits that fact that all the communal and private settlements depended in different ways on the communities, and the second one is that they had similar and complementary attributions, acting as a safety net over all Jewish activity. Although Moses Schwartzfeld defined the Jewish societies of mutual assistance in the 19th century as representations of the modern selfishness, because they emphasized contribution over charity, they were not able to act otherwise due to lack of means, by representing the middle class and the tops of the lower class, the most affected categories by the risk of being pauperised. It is under these circumstances that the activity of Bezalel Toeles Hamachov (Israelite Society for the Healing of the Sick People) between 1875 and 1923 should be considered. It is the topic of this case study, investigated by us at the Archive of the Center for the Study of the Jewish History in Romania under the auspices of the Federation of the Jewish Communities in Romania. Fonds I and II from this archive include reports of the General Assembly of Bezalel, balance sheets, minutes of the Committee meetings, applications for admission, summons to meetings, invitations to family and social events. All these documents describe the Bezalel society and generally the Jewish community in Bucharest, as a lively world present inside of the Romanian society, which belonged to through the agency of economic activities, social expectations, reflections of the ideologies of those times.

Author(s): Ljerka Jeftić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 23/2024

The paper is concerned with the metaphorical meanings of the verbs of perception in Serbian – vidjeti (see) and pogledati (look at) – in Bishop Atanasije’s translation of the Hebrew text of the Book of Genesis and in his comments accompanying specific verses. The analysis is set within the framework of cognitive linguistic theory of conceptual metaphor which treats metaphor as a cognitive mechanism in the construction of meaning in thought and language. The construction or understanding of meaning is achieved by way of mentally accessing an abstract target domain in terms of a concrete source domain whereby the term domain refers to any coherent organization of experience. With this in mind, the paper draws on the interpretation referred to by Bishop Atanasije that, in the course of God’s creating the world, God knew even before he saw (that is, knowledge, as the target domain, preceded sight, as the source domain) that what He created was good, but explicates His knowledge by means of the verb of perception (see) for the sake of humans because, as the paper argues in line with cognitive linguistic findings, visual input is one of the most important sources of human knowledge. Hence, the analysis focuses on the role of the verbs of perception with God as the agent in His relationship with the creation, as well as on the metaphorical and metonymic uniqueness of the biblical narration of God’s creation of the world, as contained in the translation of the Hebrew text into Serbian and Bishop Atanasije’s comments. The results of the analysis indicate that the creation is both in God’s knowledge and His sight, that is, God knows and sees the creation as long as it is good, i.e., as He intended it to be. However, once the creation gets corrupt due to humans disobeying God’s commands thus alienating themselves from God’s knowledge and sight, the new relationship is established wherein the creation becomes the object of God’s attention and regard which He continues to care for.

Justinas Kankinys tarp filosofijos ir antrosios sofistikos

Justinas Kankinys tarp filosofijos ir antrosios sofistikos

Author(s): Justinas Ambrazas / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 3/2024

Only relatively recently have researchers begun to speak more loudly about how studies on the Second Sophistic overlook Christian (and Jewish) literature. On the other hand, studies on early Christianity in turn view the Second Sophistic as an exclusively rhetorical movement. The aim of the article’s author is to look at Justin, a Christian philosopher, in the context of the Second Sophistic. The paper first discusses the Second Sophistic as a rhetorical, cultural, and sociopolitical movement. The article distinguishes between two groups of educated people of that time: philosophers and rhetoricians-sophists and discusses their distinguishing features. This study examines the influence of the Second Sophistic on philosophical discourse and the tension between rhetoric and philosophy. The author of the article also analyzes Justin Martyr’s self-representation techniques and participation in rhetorical and philosophical disputes, conflicts with contemporaries, and strategies for presenting Christian teachings. Finally, it is concluded that although Justin can be seen as one of the representatives of the Second Sophistic, his main goal was to proclaim the Christian message, which only further strengthens his role as an apologist.
