Отново за Абу Хамид ал-Газали (поч. 1111), класификацията на науките и мюсюлманското религиозно образование

Author(s): Atanas Shinikov / Language(s): Bulgarian,Arabic Issue: 21/2015

Predilections for classification of sciences in Muslim civilization tend to be seen as rooted in the classical antiquity heritage, as Franz Rosenthal goes. Yet the Sunni mainstream produced classifications significantly differing from the Greek antiquity ones, such as the one of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (d. 1111) in his influential ―Revival of Religious Sciences‖ (Ihyā’ ‘ulūm al-dīn). Proceeding out of a Muslim concept of knowledge (‘ilm), as differing from the Greek ἐπιστήμη, each of the ―branches of knowledge‖ (‘ulūm) acquires value according to its ability to lead Muslims to the rewards of the afterlife (ākhira). The primary division outlines two large categories: duties incumbent upon individual Muslims (farḍ ‘ayn), and ―collective duties‖ (farḍ kifāya) upon the Muslim community. Al-Ghazali does not build a comprehensive framework of sciences, as some indicative and value charged disproportions are observed: sciences like mathematics and medicine find little place. ―Speculative theology‖ (kalām) and philosophy (falsafa) are subordinate, with philosophy not given a status of a separate ―science‖. Among the highest of sciences formally stands the ―science of the unveiling‖ (mukāshafa) and the esoteric (bāṭin), described in terms reminding of the Sufi tradition. Yet what emerges as immediate importance for this world (dunyā), as means for preparation for the afterlife, is Muslim law (fiqh) which has for its subject the external (ẓāhir) dimensions of the life of the umma that can be observed and regulated. Thus we cannot say that the purpose of this classification is the provision of the educational field with a ready-made curriculum. Yet, on the basis of the text of the Ihyā’ we can infer that it provided a framework for a Sunni value positioning of the subjects that could outline the focus areas within the Sunni educational institutions of the Abbasid 11th century, with fiqh occupying a pivotal role.

Congruence of rituals and theatre.

Congruence of rituals and theatre.

Author(s): Tudor Cosmin Ciocan / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2015

I have started this research as a response to a pejorative question that religious rituals are merely theatrical, and the personnel involved nothing else but actors; beyond this there is nothing any religion suggests, e.g. healing, divine touch, blessings et.al. This paper is about rituals and their meanings and roles played as in social drama and theatre play. Considering the relationship between ritual and theatre to be reciprocal I will use their functions to evaluate the process of religious ceremonies and the role they play for adherents/participants, as if they would be attending a play. Religious Studies and Drama joint study offers the opportunity to combine two complementary humanities subjects, as both drama and religion are mainstays of cultural practice.

Болното тяло в контекста на православната традиция (Лечебните молитви като съвременна ритуална практика)

Author(s): Maria Schnitter / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2016

The article discusses the question about the attitude of the Orthodox Church to illness as a sign of broken harmony between the human being and its Creator. Tracing the basic interpretations of bodily suffering in the Christian tradition – as a means of joining the passion of the Christ; as an instrument for the salvation of the human soul; as an evil caused by the Satan but made possible by God, the author comes to the conclusion that the attitude of the Christian theology to the sufferings of the body is ambivalent rather than treating it simply as an ‘ultimate evil’. She also traces the tradition of use of healing prayers in the period between the tenth and the twenty-first centuries as an always actual element of the Christian ritual practices. The text of the so called ‘Cyprian’s Prayers’ is analyzed, too. At the same time its place in the postmodern social context is also outlined.

Св. Георги Нови Софийски. Разпространение и аспекти на култа

Author(s): Ivanka Gergova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2015

St Georgе the New Martyr of Sofia/Kratovo was one of the first Balkan new martyrs after the Ottoman conquest whose cult was strongly developed and achieved wide dissemination. George was born in Kratovo in 1496–1497. When he was orphaned, left Kratovo and he went to Sofia. The local Muslims tried to draw the young man towards their faith, but he maintained his Christian beliefs. For this reason he was taken to court, condemned to death and burnt at the stake. The clergy and Christians buried them in the cathedral church of St Marina on the 11th February, 1515. From the very outset favourable conditions existed for the creation of a cult to the young mar- tyr. Priest Peio wrote an extensive life, service and prologue about the new martyr. The brief life of St Georgе the New Martyr tells how the relics of the saint were removed from the grave, later they were gradually scattered. There are references to a whole series of caskets containing relics of St George the New Martyr: in the Kremikovski Monastery, in the church of St George in Sofia; in Rila Monastery has five caskets containing parts of the bones of the saint; in the Hilandar Monastery. References to the relics of the Sofia martyr have also been found in the Serbian mon- asteries of Dechani, Studenitsa and Velika Remeta. Initially the cult of St George the New Martyr was local but not limited to Sofia. The service to the saint refers to believers from the surrounding area, who made pilgrim- ages to worship his relics. The earliest image of St George the New Martyr close to the centre of the cult can be found in the narthex of the church at the Bilinsky Monastery, which in my opinion dates from the 16th century. Soon after the establishment of the cult of the newly martyred saint in Sofia, the cult spread to the Hilandar Monastery on Holy Mount Athos. All the main elements required for a cult can be observed here – the presence of relics, texts and images. At the same time St George the New Martyr also became celebrated in his home village of Kratovo. In 1536–1537, Prince Dimitar Pepic of Kra- tovo became a patron of the Toplicki Monastery, in Demir Hisar region, and he paid for the murals in which St George the New Martyr is depicted. In the 17th century, images of the newly martyred saint continued to appear in the Demir Hisar and Kichevo region. The image of St George the New Martyr in the diocese of the Serbi- an Patriarchate of Pech became unusually popular after its restoration in 1557. Over the next decades and into the 17th century, dozens of churches over a large territory brought the image of the newly martyred saint of Sofia to the lay people and clergy. It can be stated with certainty that during the first century after the death of the saint, the majority of his images were created within the territory of the Serbian church. It is usually emphasised that the image of the newly martyred saint is an example to believers and protects them from abandoning the Christian faith. However, this is probably only a part of the truth. Of the large number of newly martyred saints, only this one can be found in Serbian churches and the reason for his choice must be connected with his Serbian nationality. The adherence to the cult of Serbian saints of all categories was an important element of the policy of the Patriarchate of Pech during the Ottoman Empire. The period between the 18th and 19th centuries marked a new stage in the devel-opment of the cult and its territorial spread. During these two centuries the cult underwent a real renaissance in the Bulgarian lands. In Sofia, where the cult had been maintained without interruption during the 19th and the 20th centuries, other traditional folk forms of reverence had developed. The guild of goldsmiths in Sofia, like those in Kratovo, Skopje and Pirot, accepted the newly martyred saint as their patron. From the second half of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century, a large num- ber of murals and icons of St George the New Martyr appeared in Sofia, frequently accompanied of St Nickola the New Martyr of Sofia. However, during this period in the Bulgarian lands the reputation of the martyr of Sofia went beyond the local boundaries of fame and reverence. He was included in the pantheon of those nation- al saints who played an important role in the leading processes of Bulgarian society– for national self-awareness and the struggle for the independence of the Bulgarian church. For a long time in the saint’s birthplace of Kratovo and the region, there was no mention of his worship. This was renewed or activated during the second half of the 19th century.

BİLİM-DİN ÇATIŞMASI TEZİNİN DOĞUŞU VE BİR İSLÂM SAVUNMASI: AHMET MİDHAT EFENDİ VE “NİZÂ-I İLM Ü DÎN” ADLI ESERİ

Author(s): Mustafa Yildirim / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 30/2016

In the nineteenth century, in the face of weakening religious institutions, materialist and positivist thoughts had risen in Europe. Starting in the second half of the century, these ideas affected the Ottoman intellectuals of the Tanzimat period. In a time which saw a process of disintegration, refutations were written against those who claimed that Islam was the reason for the recession of Muslim countries. The last quarter of the century was dominated by Ahmet Midhat’s struggle of idea against missions and materialism. He translated John William Draper’s 1874 attack on the Catholic Church, History Of The Conflict Between Religion and Science into Ottoman Turkish. In his critical edition, He criticized some of Draper’s mistakes concerning Islamic thought and the Prophet of Islam. His primary objective in this work was to protect the youth of the Ottoman Empire from materialism.

FITTING THE LADDER TO THE TREE: A COMMON SENSE VIEW ON THE COGNITIVE EVOLUTION OF THE PLEISTOCENE HUMAN LINEAGE

Author(s): Mircea Anghelinu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2013

The mismatch between the human paleoanthropological ‘tree’ and the paleo-cognitive ‘ladder’ has been recently attributed to epistemological biases affecting the mainstream narratives on cognitive evolution. The present paper takes issue with such a perspective and argues for a rather continuous cognitive development along the human lineage, as documented archaeologically by the early emergence of a ‘familiar’ human mind and by the cumulative features of Pleistocene cultural evolution in general. These facts seriously question the paleo-cognitive relevance of the acknowledged branchy taxonomy and point strongly towards a more anagenetic view on human biological evolution. Moreover, as the prerequisites for complex behavior and a consistent ability for cultural transmission were already among the capacities of the Homo erectus grade, the scope of further major cognitive changes, as usually invoked in connection to the emergence of Homo sapiens sapiens, appears limited.

The study deals with the description of the dreams of a Reformed pastor who worked at the beginning of the 17th century. In the episcopal library of Székesfehérvár can be found one issue from the 1590 edition of Andreas Hondroff's work with the title Theatrum Historicum... We know a few possessors of this book: András Keczeli dominie in Tövis, Gábor Csernátoni pastor in Marosillye then in Alpestes and István Telegdi T. pastor also in Alpestes. On the book Gábor Csernátoni wrote the birth date of his children and István Telegdi wrote down ten of his dreams. The description of these dreams contains numerous cultural aspects and details about the mentality of that period – in three dreams figures Gábor Bethlen prince of Transylvania and in one the widow of the Moldavian prince, Marcu Cercel.

The interwar period brought multiple challenges at every level to the newly formed Királyhágómellék Reformed Church District. After World War I, the district faced challenges to fill a given frame with a proper content. Establishing church institutions on various levels and structuring internal mission were of highest priorities. The Oxford Group came as a new internal mission element to revitalise the Church, besides traditional approaches. However, the promoter of the organization failed to provide the Group a wider recognition. This study reveals the background of his efforts.

Dzieje Kościoła a życie ludzi świętych oraz świątobliwych: przykład kardynała Stanisława Hozjusza

Author(s): Zdzisław Józef Kijas / Language(s): Polish Issue: 25/2024

The article discusses and takes a closer look at the heavily debated issue of the meaning of history and historical consciousness in the post-modern era. For today we see strong currents rejecting the concept of history as development. Pope Francis in particular reminds us of this when he speaks of the process of the end of historical consciousness that is taking place today, that is, the loss of the meaning of history (Encyclical "Fratelli tutti"). This history, and especially the history of the Church, includes the lives of holy and saintly people. By their lives they influence its course and the shape of the ecclesial community to which they belong. This impact is characterised by the attitudes described in the article: protest and encounter, opposition and dialogue. For example, the article concludes by presenting the person of Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius ((1504-1579), Bishop of Warmia, humanist, theologian, apologist, candidate for the glory of the altars, in whose actions we also find elements of protest and encounter.

Éducation et intelligence artificielle: le role de la famille

Éducation et intelligence artificielle: le role de la famille

Author(s): Martín Carbajo-Núñez / Language(s): French Issue: 25/2024

This article examines the ‘exciting opportunities and serious risks’ of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education. Pope Francis states that artificial intelligence ‘radically affects the world of information and communication and, by extension, certain foundations of life in society’. How should children be educated in this new existential context? The first part focuses on the growing use of artificial intelligence systems, highlighting how they can bring a significant change in the way we understand education. The second part provides guidance on how parents can use artificial intelligence in the family environment for educational purposes, using as a horizon the humanism of fraternity inspired by Francis of Assisi.

Profesorowie, wykładowcy i zarząd Wyższego Seminarium Duchownego Diecezji Elbląskiej (2023/2024)

Author(s): Piotr Towarek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 25/2024

The Higher Seminary in Elbląg was established in connection with the reorganisation of the administrative structures of the Church in Poland. It resulted directly from the decision of Pope John Paul II (Bull Totus Tuus Poloniae populus of 25 March 1992) and was connected with the creation of the Diocese of Elbląg. The seminary was erected by the first Bishop of Elbląg, Andrzej Śliwiński, on 1 October 1992, and began its actual activities in Elbląg (building at 10 Bożego Ciała Street) on 8 October 1993. After more than thirty years of functioning in Elbląg, the seminarian alumni were transferred to Olsztyn in 2024. They now live in the Hosianum Seminary building and attend lectures at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. This article presents the professors and lecturers as well as the management of the Elbląg seminary in 2024.

Znovuobjavenie personálneho Stvoriteľa ako ponuka viery pre dnešnú spoločnosť

Author(s): Gloria Braunsteiner / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2025

The scientific and technical development is connected also with Theology, which is not isolated from new scientific knowledge. The Church has learned from the conflict with Galilei, to whom she was not open enough. The Biblical story on Creation is neither a historical nor a scientific report, but it wants to describe in a backward sight the testimony of faith in the Creator and does not need to supply missing knowledge but to express the rationality of being convinced in faith, that God is in his strength of being the Savior of the world the only and unique Creator. The world did not come to being by chance of evolutionary mutation and selection, although development is rooted in everything what God has created.

Međunarodna politička uloga dogmi Rimokatoličke crkve

Author(s): Milan Veselica / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2024

The paper investigates the political role of the last Catholic dogmas proclaimed (or renewed) in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century: the immaculate conception, the papal primacy and infallibility (ex cathedra), and the assumption of Mary. The paper aims to explain their political role in the concrete international context. The dogmatization of certain church teachings comes as a consequence of socio-political challenges, and the political role of dogmas is interpreted from the perspective of the theoretical concept of norm entrepreneurship and the transnational soft power of religious actors. The historical method was used in the work. However, the presented findings point to the long-term importance of studying the relationship between dogma and politics: in order to expand knowledge about the political behavior of the Roman Catholic Church (scientific salience) and to understand the nature of normative entrepreneurship directed at the global Catholic society in all historical moments (social salience).

Zmartwychwstanie przez technikę. Problem tożsamości umysłu w koncepcjach rozwoju sztucznej inteligencji

Author(s): Olgierd Sroczyński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 34/2024

Mind uploading is mentioned by authors associated with transhumanist movements as one of the paths to Artificial General Intelligence. The belief that such hypothetical technology is possible to develop, is primarily based on biological reductionism, i.e., equating the mind with the brain (or the entire nervous system), and secondly, on the assumption that neurobiological processes are computable. However, analysing both assumptions from the perspective of personal identity raises doubts about the logical possibility of such technology existing in the way transhumanism proposes.

RIFIUTO DI EMOTRASFUSIONI E TESTIMONI DI GEOVA ALLA LUCE DELLA NUOVA SENTENZA DELLA CORTE EUROPEA DEI DIRITTI

Author(s): Brigitta Marieclaire Catalano / Language(s): Italian Issue: 2/2024

The contribution explores the issues related to the right to religious freedom and the self-determination of Jehovah’s Witnesses, particularly in connection with their refusal of blood transfusions for reasons of faith. This complex legal and bioethical issue becomes particularly pressing when the patient’s refusal of treatment could lead to fatal consequences, necessitating a delicate balance between individual autonomy, religious freedom, and the State’s duty to protect life and public health. The contribution also analyzes how the recent European Court of Human Rights ruling in Pindo Mulla v. Spain clarifies, although with some limitations, the intricate relationship between personal religious beliefs and the legal obligations of healthcare professionals. It offers an interpretation that reflects the profound tensions present in contemporary pluralistic societies, where religious beliefs, ethical values, and legal duties can collide in complex ways.

Празниците на еврейската общност в Пловдив през месец Тишри (Тишрей)

Author(s): Zoya Mikova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2012

The first evidence of the presence of Jews in Bulgaria dates back to the 2nd century on a tombstone near the village of Gigen, Pleven region. In Bulgarian lands, they lived mainly in the big cities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Ruse, Burgas, and today the largest and most compact group lives in the capital. In "Notes on Bulgaria and the Bulgarians" from 1874, Lyuben Karavelov mentions that they are honest, hardworking people, help each other and respect everyone with high morals, show loyalty to their fellow citizens, a strong sense of family, loyalty to each other, Christian virtues that they passed down through generations for complete harmony in the community.

GLOBALIZATION AND IDENTITY – COMPLEMENTARITY IN THE DYNAMICS OF RELIGIOUS CULTURES' INTERACTION

GLOBALIZATION AND IDENTITY – COMPLEMENTARITY IN THE DYNAMICS OF RELIGIOUS CULTURES' INTERACTION

Author(s): Nicolae Moroșan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 40/2025

Globalization and identity are two interrelated concepts that profoundly influence the dynamics of the interrelationship of religious cultures in contemporary times. Globalization facilitates rapid and extensive interaction between diverse cultures and religious traditions, resulting in an increased circulation of religious ideas, practices and values on a global scale. This expansion of cultural interconnections can lead both to homogenization, through the standardization of norms and customs, and to heterogenization, through the fostering of identity diversity and religious syncretism. The complementarity between globalization and identity is evidenced in the way religious communities navigate between maintaining authenticity and adapting to global environments. This dynamic interaction generates new forms of religious expression and the cultivation of intercultural dialogue. Thus, the study of the relationship between globalization and identity is essential for understanding how religious cultures cohabit, transform and enrich in an increasingly interconnected world.
