On the art of ornament in the literature, it is mainly within the mosque structures that the Anatolian Turkish ornamentation art is examined over certain historical periods; visual, structural, technical and semantic aspects. Therefore, no research has been found on determining the ornamentation preferences on the same type of doors of the religious buildings built in a specific region and period. This gap in the literature forms the general framework of the study and defines its purpose. The study examined how the ornamentation understanding of the harim (prayer hall) door wings of the late Ottoman period mosques constructed between 1800-1960 in the region extending from Baltacı Stream to Akhisar Stream Valley in the countryside of Trabzon province, and how the motif and pattern preferences changed in the chronological process. Among the qualitative data collection techniques in the research, which is in the "Change Monographs" type of the "Descriptive Studies" group, document analysis, photographing, and an interview was made, and twenty-four structures were selected from a hundred and fifty-two mosques by way of judgmental sampling determined on site. The fact that mosque structures in the region mainly feature floral motifs on the door wings of the harim, some masters use a motif only once, and this situation continues for generations, and that the ornamentation preferences are similar in various dimensions among the nearby valleys is among the remarkable findings. The study has shown that the regional understanding of ornamentation of a period can be read through the door wings of religious buildings.

Ramadan has been a more important month for Muslim Turks than other months, regardless of geography and historical period. At the same time, it also raises curiosity about how the month of Ramadan was spent in the Turkic states during this historical period. While information about Ramadan culture in Ottoman society was obtained in the light of studies conducted in Turkey, curiosity about how the month of Ramadan was experienced in Turkestan led to the emergence of this paper. However, given the paucity of pre-19th century sources on the topic and the fact that most works providing information on Ramadan culture in Turkestan date from the Russian Empire, research has been limited to the 19th century. In this paper, the culture of Ramadan in Turkestan is discussed in general terms, according to information in the records of British and Russian explorers such as Meakin, Geyer, Khanikov, Nalivkin, Nalivkina, Ostroumov, Pantusov, and Shishov, who came to Turkestan in the 19th century. In addition, the paper includes anonymous poems of Ramadan in Chagatay, which attracted the attention of orientalists Ostroumov and Pantusov and served as the reason for their compilation, and also examines the culture embodied in these poems.

Expression Forms of the Present Tense in the Qur'ani-Karim

Expression Forms of the Present Tense in the Qur'ani-Karim

Author(s): Shakar Ilgar Malikova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

It is known that, in Arabic, a word is divided into three parts: noun, verb and particle (harf). A noun refers to a thing and is not related to time. A verb expresses an event, which is why it relates to time. A particle is a word that has no meaning but is used with a noun or a verb. Verbs express events that happen at a particular time. At the same time, it should be noted that although medieval Arabic linguists paid great attention to the subject of the verb and its inflexion (i'rab), they did not deeply investigate the tenses and time limits of the verb. If we compare the tense forms in Arabic with those in other languages, we will face particular difficulties finding the exact equivalent. The lack of Arab research on this topic is reflected in the verbs madhi (past tense) and mudhare (present tense). Since our topic is related to the present tense, we will try to examine the forms of expression, or more precisely, how the present tense is expressed either in the Arabic literary language or in the Holy Quran. In general, verb tenses indicate their grammatical characteristics. We know that in terms of time, verbs are divided into past, present and future tenses. The present tense has a broad meaning. The present tense of the verb expresses the events that are happening at the moment of speaking. In the literary Arabic language, the present tense is expressed mainly through the mudhare verb المضارع فعل from a morphological point of view. In addition, in the holy book Qur'ani-Karim, the present tense is expressed differently. If we pay attention to the verses in the Qur'an, we will see that the tense meanings of verbs are determined not only by their morphological structure but also by the context in which they are included. It should also be noted that the expression of any time in the Holy Qur'an in different ways is mainly intended to convince humanity of the authenticity of this message sent by God. It primarily refers to evangelising Heaven, Hell, Judgment Day and other issues.

In the present article the author puts forward some results of an ongoing work on some manuscripts in Albanian, Greek, Turkish and Arabic religious texts written in Greek script by Albanian Bektashi authors. The focus of the study are the Albanian texts of the manuscripts, as part of the Albanian literature of the Islamic tradition. This scribal practice of using the Greek script for Islamic texts at the first wight represents an “aberration” as it “violates” the accepted formula of ‘religion-script relation’ in the Ottoman literary context, according to which a Muslim writer/author, used only the Arabic script, and this was the case particularly for the Islamic religious texts. The phenomenon deserves a specific attention because it constitutes examples of the scribal practices not considered sufficiently (except in the work of the present author) in studies on the literary and writing tradition of Albanian Muslim authors, namely the writing of Albanian texts with Islamic religious content produced in the second half of the 19th century, using a script other than Arabic. The phenomenon has been studied previously relying mainly on a single source, which constitutes also the most interesting example known to date, as its texts are written using both Greek and Arabic script. This article presents some of the conclusions reached mainly from the study on six Albanian Bektashi manuscripts in Greek script (as well as the mentioned manuscript in Greek and Arabic script) of some Bektashi authors/scribes from South of Albania. For a better understanding of the place and the importance of our manuscripts, and more particularly of the Albanian texts they contain, for the history of the Albanian literature, the following matters are considered: 1. In the first part the article gives an overview of the problems related to the study of the Albanian texts of the Islamic tradition of the Ottoman period, such as: a. the terminology used for Albanian literature of the Islamic tradition and its place within the history of the Albanian literature; b. the question of the Albanian Bektashi literature as part of Albanian literature of the Islamic tradition; c. the issue of periodization and classification of the literature of the Bektashi tradition; d. the writing practices of Muslim Albanians. 2. In the second part, there is a presentation of Bektashi manuscripts with Greek writing written by Albanian Bektashi and the more specific problems related to them. At the beginning, an assessment is made about the social and cultural conditions that have enabled the birth of such a writing/literary practice and about the place that this phenomenon should have occupied in the space of literature and Albanian letters of the century. XIX, especially in the context of the Islamic literary tradition. Then some data on the time, place, authors, and content of the manuscripts are presented. Attention is also paid to the possible relation between the texts, trying to highlight some similarities and differences between the literary material in question. The study reached so far, the following conclusions: The use of Greek script for the writing Islamic religious texts by the Albanian Bektashis is far from being a sporadic case. As a matter of fact, it constitutes a phenomenon. This phenomenon was related to the cultural, religious, and educational processes that took place during the Ottoman period, in a much wider context than the Albanian one. At the current stage, we do not have enough data to definitively determine the time and area, as well as the volume of Albanian texts and literary works of the Islamic tradition that were written according to this scheme. The phenomenon in question, in its complexity, needs further investigations. On the other hand, it makes necessary a new approach to the history of Albanian literature in general, and to the Albanian literature of the Islamic tradition in particular.

Literature, especially poetry, has undoubtedly had a great place in the cultural history of the Arabs. Arab poet in the period of ignorance; It had many critical functions, such as making the heroism of the tribesmen epic, immortalizing the names of the deceased, and providing a kind of psychological superiority by satirizing the opposing tribes and people. Poetry continued to exist in all areas of life after Islam, as poetry spread to the cultural codes of the Arabs. As a manifestation of this, poems were utilized to the maximum in Islamic disciplines that were formed in the following years. Arabic poetry has been one of the reference sources of Islamic sciences such as tafsir, hadith and qiraat, not just linguistic studies such as nahiv. The application of the process of bringing evidence from this poem, which is termed as istishhad in istilah, is also seen in the hadith annotations. While the commentators were looking for the meaning of some strange words in the hadiths in poetry, they sometimes included one or a few couplets that fully agreed with the meaning of the hadith. In this study, it has been examined how the poems of the Abbasid poet al-Mutanabbī, whose poems are frequently referred to in the hadith commentaries, are handled in these sources. It is foreseen that the results of the research will provide data to the researchers of Arabic language and rhetoric and hadith.

This study deals with the life and scholarly personality of Abd al-Rahmān b. Muhammad b. Darwīsh al-Khūt, an important figure in 19th-century Ottoman Lebanon, and the contemporary fiqh issues of the Muslim people of the time through his work Irshād alawām ilā sabīl al-salām. In 19th century Lebanon, just like today, Lebanon was, as it is today, a region where communities of different origins and beliefs lived together. The sociocultural interaction between Muslims and other religious groups led some Muslims to adopt the customs of other religions, and ‘Abd al-Rahmān al-Khūt tried to warn Muslims. Irshād al-awām is his work in which he examines these issues and deals with the current fiqh issues of his time. In this book, the author deals with the ruling on charging interest, cheating in shopping, listening to musical instruments, playing cards, backgammon, chess, dominoes, modern horse racing and similar games, going to places such as casinos and taverns to have fun, and words that lead away from religion. In the last part, he has given explanations about places where women can go and modern hijab models. The research is based on the printed copy of Irshād al-awām in the Ottoman archives. In this study, which can be considered one of the first studies on the religious life of the Ottoman people of the period and the scholarly personality of Abd al-Rahmān al-Khūt, his life and scholarly personality are first mentioned, followed by a brief mention of the political and social life in Lebanon. Continuing with the general characteristics of Irshād al-awām and the study finally focuses on the current fiqhī issues of the period. While examining current fiqh issues, the author's views explained and analysed along with some of his arguments. The study is important because it shows that the social environment and cultural life were influential in the crystallization of the jurist’s opinion.

Ku’ran Okuma Dersinin Meâl Merkezli Yapılması Meselesi: Müfredat İncelemesi

Author(s): Hasan Hüseyin Havuz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2023

The Qur’ān Recitation is taught as a compulsory or elective course at all levels of formal in education, as well as in the courses of the Presidency of Religious Affairs in non-formal education in Turkey. In the curricula of this course, it is emphasized that the readings should be word and meaning centered and the course should be centered on the meaning of the Qur’ān. However, the achievability of these idealized goals should be discussed. In addition, due to the focus of the curriculum on literally and meaningfully, there are professional difficulties in teaching the words of the Qur’ān and the programs lose their functionality. In this case, the teaching of the meaning of the Qur’ān should not be in the learning area of this course but should be the subject of a separate professional course. This study discusses the applicability of this, reminds the limits of the Qur’ān course, the importance of teaching the wording from a professional point of view, and the problematic aspect of teaching the meaning of the Qur’ān together with the teaching of the words, and clarifies how it can be done. The objective of the study is not to advocate the incorrectness of reading the meaning or to assert the principles of interpretation. The aim of the study is to contribute to the preparation of a realistic curriculum for the realization of the goals of the Qur’ān recitation courses by determining the limits of the courses in the professional field. In this context, the programs of formal schools such as imam hatip secondary school, imam hatip high school, middle and high schools, some sample the programs of the faculties of theology and the course curricula of the presidency of religious affairs were examined and evaluated in terms of teaching the meaning of the Qur’ān.

Zâhirî Âlimlerin Ashâbu’l-Hadis/Ehl-i Hadis Algısı

Zâhirî Âlimlerin Ashâbu’l-Hadis/Ehl-i Hadis Algısı

Author(s): Hüsamettin Kaya / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2023

Concepts such as ashâb al- hadīth and ahl al-hadīth, which have began to be used since the period of the Companions, refer to people who are busy with teaching and learning hadīth and who have the science of rijal and who have authority to speak on all matters related with hadīth topics. The most distinctive feature of these people is that they have tried to understand the hadīth texts according to their opinions as much as possible, without applying them to any comparisons. Besides Shafi'is and Malikis, known for their closeness to their opinions, Ẓāhirīs who have advocated being loyal to the words of hadīths, also have ranked as ashâb al-hadīth. Ahl al-hadīth who have made themselves accepted by the Islamic community, went through a mihna process in the first half of hegira III century. However, the mihna that they experienced at the end of the process have made ahl al-hadīth stronger in the eye of public. Ahl al-hadīth, who have played important role in the development of Islamic sciences, have attracted the attention of the researchers. Within this context, it is important to examine the attitudes towards ahl al- hadīth in the Islamic tradition of thought and to determine their consistency. Therefore, in this study, ashâb hadīth perception of Ẓāhirī scholars, accepted as ashâb alhadīth, will be discussed. In this study, it was aimed to find out to what extent Ẓāhirī scholars embrace value of ashâb al-hadīth as well as how much they make a claim to the opinions they have put forward in the tradition of Islamic thought. In addition to this, among the aims of our study, we tried to determine whether the Ẓāhirī scholars approach the issues objectively or not. So, the works of Ẓāhirī scholars were investigated with an inductive method, and the information obtained were assessed. As a result of this, that ashâb alhadīth have been praised in Qur’an verses was adopted by Ẓāhirī scholars, and it was determined that for Zâhirî scholars, to be a member of ashâb al-hadīth was a sign of proud. Although the Ẓāhirī scholars' view of ashâb alhadīth led them to use the concept of ashâb al-hadīth as an expression of modification, this has not become a generally valid rule. Because it has been seen that many narrators were rejected for different reasons, even though they were from ashâb al-hadīth. In addition, it has been determined that Ẓāhirī scholars frequently use the concept of ashâbü’l-hadīth as a qualifying adjective in the science of rijal. Although they attached great value to ashâb alhadīth, it was also observed that they criticized them for making mistakes because of their views on the permissibility of acting on weak hadīths, and the fact that a narrator narrates a hadīth by both his teacher and his teacher's teacher makes the hadīth weak.

In studies on the history of Sufism, the Qajar period is an important source, especially for researching the influence of Shiite thought on Sufism. Sufism, which was transformed into a different concept like gnosis, was defended by Sunni sects in this period, while it was the source of transformation and change activities of Shiite sects. The sects that endeavored to protect Sunni Sufism, especially the Qadiriyya and Naqshbandiyya sects, have gained the favor of the people in the limited regions where they are located, even though their activities have been restricted. In the 19th century when modernization and independence movements took place. and XX. YY. Although the Qajars made short-term agreements, fearing the presence of Sunni sects on the border and the caliphate power of the Ottoman Empire, they continued their policy of intimidation and pressure. Qajars have a tolerant attitude towards Shiite sects; He wanted to gain power by getting the support of Safi Ali Shahiyya for the modernization of society. Sâfî Ali Şâh and his caliph Zahirüddevle Ali Hân Kaçar carried out various activities to integrate Sufism with modernism. In particular, Zahirüddevle's establishment of the Encümen-i Uhuvvet Cemiyeti, which introduced the Sufi approach based on the understanding of brotherhood and equality, and the fact that his disciples were urban intellectuals, facilitated the revolutions. Zahirüddevle; He handled Sufi concepts such as melamism-futuwwa, murshid-murid according to the needs of his age and tried to integrate tradition and modernism. This study aims to reveal the perception of Sufism in the Qajar period and to discuss the activities of the Shiite sect Safi Ali Shahiyya based on integrating Sufism with modernism. This study, which was carried out by specifically referring to Shiite sources, aims to present the panorama of the Sufi thought of an era. The importance of the article is that there is little work done in this field.

Hermeneutik Açıdan Mevlevi Ayinleri

Hermeneutik Açıdan Mevlevi Ayinleri

Author(s): Merve Nur Kaptan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2024

There are two basic paradigms in social sciences. The first of these is positivism, which is based on explanation-oriented thought; the other is the understanding/interpretive paradigm that emerged as an alternative to positivism. As a theory of meaning that finds its place in many socio-cultural fields, the hermeneutic approach is among the paradigms based on understanding/interpretation. The hermeneutic approach appears at the point of comprehending the invisible, beyond the observable. In this context, examining Mevlevi Rites in a hermeneutical context as a part of Turkish culture from a socio-cultural perspective is important in terms of revealing the meaning of the Rites. The Mevlevi order is based on the principle of unity of exictence in sufi thought and at the same time it is based on an esoteric belief system. In this sense, Mevlevism and Mevlevi Rites, which reflect the belief system mentioned, have meanings beyond the obvious. Particularly, music, which is the dominant element in the ceremony, draws attention as a character that has the capacity to direct the performance. In this direction, the performances during the ritual start with music and the continuity of the ritual is ensured by being managed with music. Therefore, in Mevlevi order, music serves as a tool that accompanies ecstasy. Every movement, every practice, and every stage, every phenomenon and every act of the Mevlevi Rites, which is an integral part of the performance, contains metaphorical meanings. In this context, in the research, which is limited to the theological dimension of the hermeneutic paradigm, the spiritual meanings of the Mevlevi rites were determined by the literature study, the documents related to the subject were examined, the descriptive analysis of the data obtained was made and the findings were revealed.

Eunuchs have been a significant type of slavery throughout history, dating back to the Middle Assyrian period as institutionalized employment. Their presence during the early Islamic years, including the Jahiliyya period, is mentioned in the chronicles. Ma’būr, of Coptic origin, was one of the slaves sent as a gift by Muqawkis (d. 21/642 [?]). Records indicate that he was the elder brother or uncle’s son of Māriya (d. 16/637). It is known that he faced slander and accusations from various sources due to his service to Māriya. It is important to note that there is limited information about him in the sources. Furthermore, his historical presence in the chronicles is primarily defined by his status as a eunuch. This article begins by examining Muqawqis’ dispatch of Ma’būr to the Prophet Muhammad and discuss an accusation against Māriya. It also explores castration as a physiological characteristic, with a focus on the narratives surrounding Ma’būr’s eunuch status.

Social structures are in a continuous cycle of change. The needs arising from this change have also been effective in the interpretation of religious texts. Interpretation activities have varied depending on the factors of social change. One of these factors is scientific and technological developments. The interpretation of hadiths in the context of scientific and technological developments has maintained its topicality in every period. Especially in the last two centuries, scientific and technological developments have come to the fore as a significant factor in hadith interpretation. In the Republican Era, there was a process of social change centered on “Westernism”. As a result, a gap emerged in the religious sphere and an anti-Islamic discourse began to develop under the name of scientificism. In order to fill this gap in religious life, the “Qur'an and Hadith Translation Project” was launched. Regarding Hadith, it was decided to translate and comment on the Tajrīd-i Sarīh written by Zebīdī. Ahmed Naim, one of the authors who translated and commented on Tajrīd-i Sarīh, was a scholar who was well versed in both religious sciences and Western philosophy. For this reason, he interpreted many issues in the context of scientific and technological developments. In this article, the hadiths interpreted by Ahmed Naim on the metaphysical issues of “jinn” and “mi'raj” are analyzed. The aim is to reveal how Ahmed Naim, who came to the forefront with his philosopher identity, handled the relationship between religion and science, his answers to those who opposed Islam under the name of scientificism, the scientific examples he used, and how he reflected the social change that occurred in the Republican Era in his interpretations. In addition, it should be emphasized that Ahmed Naim, who was an expert in different disciplines, was a remarkable figure with his interdisciplinary approach and dynamic hadith interpretation in parallel with social change.

Hazrat Rumi's Mathnawi has been accepted as a spiritual guide by the sûfîs since the day it was written. Mathnawi, on the one hand, sheds light on the preparation of the reader for the life in the hereafter, and on the other hand, gives important clues about how he should be in an attitude and feeling when faced with worldly tests. In this context, many issues such as separation, illness, death, losses, financial difficulties, problems in human relations are presented to the reader either directly by opening a title or in a scattered form in various stories. Considering the topics in question, one of the most striking points in question is the mention of disease. Accordingly, Hazrat Mawlana discusses subjects like "What is the truth of the disease?", "Why are people tested by the disease?", "What kind of meaning should be attached to the disease?", "What is the condition of the patient in the sight of God?". On the other hand, he emphasized that the main issue was to get rid of spiritual diseases and the temporariness of bodily ailments, and directed attention to the healing of the soul. In this communiqué, the issue of how Hazrat Mawlana evaluates the issue of illness in his Mathnawi and what kind of perspective he offers to the person who is tested by the disease will be discussed. As a matter of fact, a significant majority of people who want to make sense of the severe illnesses they experience today want to receive psychological support, and some of them state that they need spiritual guidance. In this context, it is beyond doubt that Mathnawi's guidance will fill an extremely important gap.

Halveti Şeyhlerinden Ünsî Hasan'ın Dîvân-ı İlâhiyât Adlı Eseri

Halveti Şeyhlerinden Ünsî Hasan'ın Dîvân-ı İlâhiyât Adlı Eseri

Author(s): Mustafa Tatci / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 35/2024

Hasan Ünsî was a Sufi belonging to the Halvatiyya-i Sha'bâniyya school of Sufism who lived between the XVII-XVIII centuries, during the reigns of Mehmed IV, Ahmed II, Mustafa II and Ahmed III, and who met directly or indirectly with Baltacı Mehmed and Çorlulu Ali Paşa. He was raised by Sheikh Ali Atvel, one of the most competent Sufis of the XVIIth century, nicknamed Karabaş-ı Velî, who resided in Üsküdar, and sent to Istanbul. One of the main branches of Halvatiyya, one of the most important professions in the history of Sufism, which emerged in Anatolia in the XVIth century, is the Sha'bâniyya branch. This branch was established by Sha'bân-ı Velî (d. 1569). Because both the founder Pîr and the saints belonging to the later lineage had ideas based on divine love and the unity of the body, enjoyed halvah and led ascetic lives, the information about the lineage and the ascetics in this profession -as in Mevleviism and Bektashism- has not been transferred to written sources much. This being the case, the importance of written documents increases even more when researching the place of the members of the said tradition in our cultural history. One of the most important features of this dīvān, written by Hasan Ünsî, who came to teach almost a century after the death of Sha'bān al-Walī, the founder of the movement, is that it will make an important contribution to the research on ‘Sha'bāniyya’. In this study, the poet's thoughts about his love and wisdom are outlined and a contribution to this field is presented.

Modernleşme ve Ahlak: Tevfik Fikret ve Mehmet Akif Ersoy’un Gençlik Üzerine Farklı Yaklaşımları

Author(s): Emine Arslan,Sead Ibrić / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 35/2024

This study compares Tevfik Fikret’s Haluk’s Notebook (Haluk’un Defteri) with Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s Asım, analyzing the differing approaches of two distinct worldviews to concepts such as youth, morality, and modernization. Tevfik Fikret elevates the Western understanding of science and progress, asserting that modernization can only be achieved by embracing the West. Haluk’s Notebook presents a secular and scientific youth model through the figure of a father who believes his son’s Western education will enlighten society. In contrast, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, in Asım, advocates for an ideal of youth that adopts only the science of the West while remaining faithful to Islamic ethics and national values. Both works reflect the societal transformation processes of their time, offering different perspectives on modernization and moral values. This article examines the intellectual debates and literary approaches of the era through the youth ideals presented by Tevfik Fikret and Mehmet Akif Ersoy.
