PROCESE MIGRAȚIONISTE ÎN BUCOVINA ȘI BASARABIA (PÂNĂ LA MIJLOCUL SECOLULUI AL XIX-LEA)

PROCESE MIGRAȚIONISTE ÎN BUCOVINA ȘI BASARABIA (PÂNĂ LA MIJLOCUL SECOLULUI AL XIX-LEA)

Author(s): Constantin Ungureanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2022

At the beginning of the foreign rule, Bukovina had a population of approx. 67–73 thousand people, and Bessarabia – at least 300 thousand inhabitants. Most of the inhabitants were Romanians (Moldovans), both in Bukovina (about 59–60% in 1774) and in Bessarabia (about 75–76% in 1812). In both provinces, the most massive migration processes took place in the first decades of the foreign administration (in Bukovina – until the 1920s and 1930s, in Bessarabia – until the middle of the 19th century). In 12 years, the number of inhabitants almost doubled in Bukovina (from 67–73 thousand people in 1774, to about 135 thousand people in 1786) and Bessarabia (from at least 300 thousand in 1812, to approximately 583 thousand in 1824). Subsequently, the migration processes decreased in intensity, and the number of inhabitants increased due to the natural growth. In the first years of the Russian rule, simultaneously with the relocation of the wandering peasants from across the Dniester to Bessarabia, there was a reverse process of refuge of Moldovan peasants in Moldova west of the Prut. Similar processes took place in the first years of Austrian rule also in Bukovina, when many Romanian peasants fled to Moldova. In the first decades of foreign rule, most foreign immigrants arrived in both Bukovina and Bessarabia, mainly Ukrainians from the north and east of the Dniester. As a result, it was during this period that the ethnic structure of the population in both provinces changed radically, to the detriment of the local Romanian population. Towards the middle of the 19th century, Bukovina was populated by approximately 380 thousand inhabitants, including 48.5% Romanians, and in Bessarabia, the proportion of Moldovans was reduced to approx. 52–56% (in the years 1850–1862).

ION POPESCU-SIRETEANU (13 SEPTEMBRIE 1934, MĂNĂSTIOARA-SIRET – 29 IULIE 2021, PITEȘTI-ARGEȘ)

ION POPESCU-SIRETEANU (13 SEPTEMBRIE 1934, MĂNĂSTIOARA-SIRET – 29 IULIE 2021, PITEȘTI-ARGEȘ)

Author(s): Vasile I. Schipor / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2022

The following biobibliographical article is dedicated to the writer Ion Popescu-Sireteanu, one of the active collaborators of the periodical “Annals of Bukovina” and is signed by the former editor-in-chief (1993–2018) of the academic periodical from Rădăuţi. The biographical excursion is followed by a presentation of the writerʼs preferred fields of scientific activity, illustrated by his contributions to the knowledge of the life and work of personalities of modern, classical and contemporary Romanian literature, through studies and researches of linguistics, ethnography and folklore and of cultural history. Several articles published in the “Annals of Bukovina” capitalize on his field surveys regarding the toponymics of Bukovina. Interesting are the belletristic works (stories, fables, short prose, pamphlets and poems) signed by Ion Popescu-Sireteanu, some of them being printed in several editions. Several original writings, dedicated to the Romanian village on the outskirts of Bukovina from the 4th–5th decades of the last century, are representative for the author from many points of view: the plot structure, the art of storytelling, the artistic and documentary value. Others, such as the funny stories in the volume Păcală și ai săi (1994), are intended mainly for children and young people, often transposing events and characters into contemporary times. The volume File de jurnal, 1985–1990 (2018) offers interested users a lot of information, managed by a sensitive author, dramatically marked by events: “For a long time I feel a permanent weight on my soul. Iʼm looking forward and all the paths, all the light sources, are closed to me. I live by chance, like a human being carried away by giddy waves. I donʼt know how long this state will last, nor if it will be able to be easily remedied. In any case, we are in a time of total disorganization. [...] Our lives evolve from bad to worse”. (December 1, 1985, December 9, 1985). In his verses, intertwined by “an invading lyricism”, Ion Popescu-Sireteanu reveals himself to us as “a candid soul, an incurable romantic, immune to all models and pictures”. The article ends with the main critical references to his life and work.

CULTELE RELIGIOASE DIN ORAȘUL VATRA DORNEI (I)

Author(s): Nicu Popa / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

The following article is a transcription of a manuscript belonging to a teacher and school manager from Vatra Dornei, Nicolae A. Popa. It begins with a short history of Christianity in Moldavia and Bukovina and continues with a presentation of the religious (orthodox, catholic, protestant, Jewish) cults, churches and monasteries from this region and from the town between the early 1800’s and the first half of the 20th century. The text itself has documentary value, as it depicts a part of the religious life in Bukovina based on historical information and also from a personal, not less important point of view.

Budowa kościoła ewangelickiego w Rogiedlach na przełomie XIX i XX wieku

Author(s): Marek Jodkowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 18/2017

In the 1890s, Evangelical services in Regerteln/Rogiedle were celebrated at the local school. The appointment of a priest, Rev Carl Richard Hilbrandt, in 1894, was viewed as an opportunity to change this situation. At that time, it was planned that a church in Rogiedle would be built. In 1897, the 900th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Adalbert, the Apostle of Prussia, was celebrated. Considering this, the construction of the said building would become a lasting remembrance of this anniversary. However, it was not possible to implement the project at that time. The project of a temple with 236 seats was prepared by Klehmet, the district construction inspector. Ebeling, a builder, was commissioned to perform the construction works commenced in the first half of 1900. The church was blessed on 13 December 1900, in the presence of Church authorities and state authorities of the East Prussia province. A large part of the construction expenses was covered by the Gustav-AdolfVerein, which supported Evangelical religious institutions situated in the diaspora areas.

The „hard” borders in the Baltic Sea Region, 1917-1922

The „hard” borders in the Baltic Sea Region, 1917-1922

Author(s): Silviu-Marian Miloiu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The British sociologist Gerard Delanty's conception of "boundary and identities of exclusion" in European history shall be remembered when approaching "hard borders." This concept takes into account the "cultural dynamics of self-identification through exclusion" and is germane when considering the interwar interactions between the countries of the Baltic area and Russia. The works of Reece Jones and Alec Murphy on "the hardening of borders" and "the fetishization of territory" as national traits are equally pertinent to the perception of frontiers during the duration of the 20th century, including the years 1917 to 1922. In every occasion in which war and violence (ultimatums, threats of force) were employed in the Baltic Sea Region to award borders in favor of one state or another or to settle accounts, the arrangements were not permanent and a cycle of warfare with terrible effects on local people followed. The combination of universalist ideologies (such as Communism) with imperial goals frequently resulted in both domestic and international conflicts. Civil unrest (sisällissota) and clashes with and between foreign troops (Russian and German) marked Finland's journey to independence. Comparable conditions existed in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In each case, the upshot was not just an obsession with boundaries, but also an increase in otherness and loss of life.

Alterity and identity: Romanian-Swedish mutual perceptions during The Second World War

Alterity and identity: Romanian-Swedish mutual perceptions during The Second World War

Author(s): Andreea Dahlquist / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

The geographic distance between Romania and Sweden influenced the creation of mutual imaginary. However, it wasn't until the beginning of the 20th century that inhabitants of the two nations were interested in discovering each other. Therefore, Romanian-Swedish mutual impressions were mostly based on the accounts of tourists who had visited both nations. During the interwar era, direct contact between Romanians and Swedes was infrequent. The news about Romania was disseminated by the Swedish press, which played a significant part in the formation of hostile sentiments. On the other side, the Romanian diplomats who ran the Stockholm-based Legation had nothing but admiration for Swedish society. During the Second World War, the situation improved as more Romanian and Swedish intellectuals traveled to Scandinavia and the Balkans. However, these interactions did not alter how Romanians and Swedes viewed one another.

A view from Poland: the state and the Orthodox church in the Ukrainian lands in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as reflected in the Polish historical research

Author(s): Valerii Lastovskyi / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

This article explores the shifting perspectives of Polish academics about the role of the Orthodox Church in domestic and interstate relations within the Commonwealth and the Russian Empire. Why Poland's sovereignty crumbled at the end of the 18th century was one of the most critical questions Polish historians sought to explain. Since Bohdan Khmelnytskii's uprising, Moscow's geopolitical objectives had placed the Ukrainian territories in the forefront of their attention. It has been documented that the nineteenth-century Polish scientific research was more concerned with the social and political impact of Orthodox Churches in Commonwealth regions than any other aspect of its history. However, this scenario has altered through time. Since the eighteenth century, the viewpoints of Polish historians have changed drastically. Additionally, they investigated the inner workings of churches and religious activity in Ukraine.

Author(s): Aneta Kirova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2021

The struggle to limit and eliminate one of the most severe parasites in our country has a dramatic history. The disease has been known since ancient times and until the mid-60s of the twentieth century, it is invariably present in a number of the most commonly diagnosed infectious parasitic diseases. In a country like Bulgaria, whose agricultural economy was the main livelihood of the population at the end of the 19th and the middle of the 20th century, the disease was of defining significance. Historically, malaria is seen as a social "scourge" proceeding with severe illness, disability, death, and as one of the causes of economic stagnation in entire areas of the country. The article examines the history of the fight against malaria in Bulgaria, in Varna and Burgas regions. The study period covers the period from the Liberation to 1930. Emphasis is placed on the efforts of the state administration, the establishment of sanitary supervision, the activity of the health authorities and the active part of the Bulgarian population for the control and complete eradication of the disease in Bulgaria. The main legislative acts regulating the implementation of anti-epidemic measures against malaria and the main institutions working in this direction are reviwed. The experience of the Italian medics in the fight against malaria in Italy and the role of the Rockefeller Foundation for the successful training and cooperation between Bulgarian and Italian malaria specialists in the application of the Italian experience in the fight against malaria are followed.

DONATION AND PERSONALITY: THE SAROGLU CASE

Author(s): Yura Konstantinova / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

The present article seeks to analyze, via the act of donation, the relationship between donor and donee on the basis of the particular case of the will of the merchant Zafir Saroglu (1795 – 1887). Zafir Saroglu’s bequest portrays him both as a responsible family man, an exemplary Greek subject and a Bulgarian patriot who cared for Bulgaria’s prosperity. His bequest also contains the donor’s understanding of the problems facing the young Bulgarian state. In his opinion, they were focused on the need to modernize Bulgarian agriculture and raise the literacy level of the population. However, none of his plans came to fruition – his money was used for anti-Bulgarian causes and military purposes, and his name sank into oblivion.

Transilvania ca societate de frontieră din perspectiva colecționarilor de carte

Author(s): Andreea Mârza / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2 Supp./2022

The history of libraries from Transylvania can also be investigated from the perspective of Transylvania as a border nation. If we examine over time, Transylvania was a border nation, and this frontier attempted to meet the civilisation degree of the centre. This research tackles some book collections that entered Transylvania due to the collector activity of Transylvania’s bishop, Ignác Batthyány. It is the book collection that formed what currently is known as “library of Johannes Henckel”, “library of cardinal Christophor Migazzi”. The two collections reached the current holdings of the Batthyaneum Library in the ‘80s of the XVIIIth century. We do not know exactly how the bishop came to know about the first library, that of Johannes Henckel. The second, well known in the capital of the Empire, was bought after a series of negotiations that brought Imre Dániel, the future librarian of the Transylvanian prelate, to the fore. Both libraries hold essential holdings of works purchased for the library to be established in Alba Iulia, a small town like the region it was part of, on the outskirts of the Hapsburg Empire. We also draw attention to a possible acquisition, probably partial, of some books that belonged to the Slovak scholar Adám František Kollár. This question mark regarding Kollár's books hovers until the book holdings of the Batthyaneum Library are processed in a catalogue also containing the owners of the books.

Financial Partnerships in the 19th Century – Relationship between Bulgarian Merchants and Galata Sarrafs

Author(s): Mustafa Güripek / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

In this study, 19th century Bulgarian financial developments will be discussed in parallel with the commercial developments. The focus of the study is the network of relations established by important merchant families that emerged in the 19th century with the sarrafs of Istanbul (Galata) and important merchants like Georgiev, Puliev, Çalıkoğlu, Tezvetoğlu etc. They had established strong financial ties with the Galata bankers/sarrafs. I will try to answer some questions such as following ones. What factors were important in establishing these ties? Was this relationship necessary? What were the benefits of the money changers and Bulgarian merchants from these financial cooperations? What was the role of the state in this relationship? What was the role of local administrators in the network of sarrafs and merchants?

Възгледи за стопанското развитие на българите през ХІХ век в програмните документи на радикалното направление в националноосвободителното движение

Author(s): Petko St. Petkov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

On the basis of their program documents, the views on the economic development of Bulgarians of various representatives of the radical sector in the national liberation movement in the 19th century are examined and analyzed. Different research methods are applied – critical analysis, comparative historical approach. The object of the study is presented in chronological order from the mid-30s of the 19th century, when the first manifestation of the national liberation movement was organized, to the Liberation – the creation of a new Bulgarian state in the 70s of the 19th century. In the researched program documents of the so-called revolutionary or radical organizations are rarely found, and in some there are no ideas and projects for the economic development of the Bulgarians at all, apart from the most general and repeated findings about the plight of the people under Ottoman rule, which have mostly a motivational purpose. This reasoned conclusion has an important meaning, since a large part of the participants in the organizations from the radical sector live to see the Liberation, i.e. the creation of the new Bulgarian state, which they largely caused with their actions in 1875–1876. They are actively involved in the organization and state administration of the Principality of Bulgaria, despite the clearly established lack of programmatic views on the economic development of the people, which manage.

Икономически прочит на османската конституция от 1876 година

Икономически прочит на османската конституция от 1876 година

Author(s): Hristiyan Atanasov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

On 3 November 1839, the Grand Vizier Mustafa Reşid Pasha solemnly read out a sultan’s order (Hatt-ı Şerif) marking the beginning of significant transformations in the Ottoman Empire. Thus began the Tanzimat (from tanzimat – reorganisation, reconstruction), or the period of reforms. A period marked by the extreme polarisation of the Ottoman administrative elite, which would divide itself into a pro-Western liberal group and one that defended religious traditions and opposed change in the empire. The struggle between these antagonist groups would be fought with variable success. The liberals would seemingly win – they would provide the ideological inspiration for the next great reformist decree, the Sultan's Firman (Hatt-ı Hümâyûn) of 1856, and especially the Constitution (Kanun-i Еsasi) promulgated in late 1876. Ultimately, however, they would come to lose after a series of vicissitudes. Sultan Abdul Hamid II put an end to the constitutional reforms, dissolved the convened Ottoman parliament, and established an authoritarian regime until the Young Turk Revolution of 1908. The purpose of this article is to present and analyse, using an economic point of view, the three main acts of the Tanzimat – the Hatt-ı Şerif, the Hatt- ı Hümâyûn and to emphasize on the Constitution. The latter, although ambiguously assessed in scholarly literature, appears as a logical conclusion of the reform period. Despite its short duration, it presents the ideology of reforms in terms of property, finance and economics. The constitution secured the most important principles of liberalism and capitalism and this should be considered as an undoubted achievement and significant breakthrough for such traditional society like the Ottoman. First of all, it guaranteed private property, ensured freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of association and freedom of expression. Ottoman state finances became public and were placed under the control of deputies elected by the subjects, a significant step in the direction of modern budgeting and auditing.

Starp dievišķo un pasaulīgo: diskusijas par 19./20. gs. mijas sabiedrisko morāli Latvijas kristīgajos preses izdevumos

Author(s): Kristīne Ante / Language(s): Latvian Issue: 37/2018

The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was an important period not only in the West European countries, but also in the Russian Empire and the Baltic Provinces incorporated therein. This was the time when the old order of the world had changed and many new and previously not experienced opportunities opened up for Latvian society. People’s living conditions improved, they became more educated, self-confident and active. They started doubting the heritage left by the preceding generations and the traditions nurtured for centuries. They were willing to develop a new world, to give up the former structures of state authority, including the church. This article is aimed at analysing the attitude of various Christian confessions represented in Latvia towards the change brought by the modern century; what was considered the most important virtues and vice of the period; whether there were any differences in the opinions of representatives of various confessions and cultural historical regions on these matters and their attitude towards the new. The publication is based on the periodical press publications of various Christian confessions published in Latvian from the late 19th century to World War I. The Ev. Lutheran church is represented by the supplement Baznīcas un skolas ziņas [Church and School News], later Baznīcas ziņas [Church News] of Latviešu Avīzes [Latvian Newspapers] (1857–1900; 1902–1915). The opinion of the Orthodox on the public morality issues was obtained from the publication Rīgas Garīgais Vēstnesis [Riga Ecclesiastical News] (1902–1905), which was later published under the title Pareizticīgo Latviešu Vēstnesis [Orthodox Latvian News] (1906–1917). The Baptists’ views are represented by two publications, the religious newspaper Evangelists (1881–1887), and Jaunais Jeruzalemes kalendārs [The New Calendar of Jerusalem] (1908–1917, 1925–1934). The periodicals of the Roman Catholics are represented by the first two publications in the Latgallian written language: Gaisma [Light] (1905–1906), Sākla (1906), Auseklis (1906–1907). Because of the prohibition of Latin print it was only possible to start publishing them after 1904. During the reviewed time period, the Christian Church in Latvia was still among the most conservative forces of Latvian society. It stood for the maintenance of the current state authority and the traditional Christian values. Its attitude towards all new ideas and political opinions (for example, materialism and socialism) was undoubtedly negative. All the Christian confessions were also strictly disapproving of the participation of Latvians in the events of the revolution of 1905 by stating that the rebellion against one’s own masters (landlords) was an unfair and dishonest act. Particular criticism was directed against violence. According to the viewpoint of the authors of the Christian press publications, faith in God and obedience to the modern and secular authority was the main cornerstone of the public morality. Still, there were certain differences in this understanding among various confessions. If the Ev. Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic press media were focusing on the obedience to God and the man (a landlord, a priest or one’s employer), the Baptists’ publications only focused on obedience to the Bible. Thus, the Baptists’ press publications emphasised the necessity of faith as opposed to obedience. Baptists (different from other Christian confessions in Latvia) were the only ones preaching the idea of equality in the Christian parish. They emphasised each individual’s responsibility for the salvation of one’s own soul, as opposed to the individual’s responsibility towards society. All the reviewed press publications agreed that drinking was the biggest vice of the Latvians (following straight after the lack of faith). The plague of drinking is a bad habit described in numerous articles of that period. The Latgallian Catholic press publications also condemned obscurantism or the lack of willingness to study as an important opportunity for self-development.

Търговското предприемачество в научното творчество на проф. Виржиния Паскалева: достижения и насоки за бъдещи изследователски дирения

Author(s): Ivaylo Naydenov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

The article sheds light on the socio-economic development of the Bulgarian lands during the 18th and 19th century on the basis of the publications written by the prominent Bulgarian historian Prof. Virjinia Paskaleva (1925–2012). In the second part of the article a possible research approach has been proposed, through which the achievements of Prof. Paskaleva can be elaborated further. The proposed approach is based on economic theory and economic sociology. Based on various primary sources, Prof. V. Paskaleva traced the economic ties of the Bulgarian lands with Austria/Austro- Hungary, England, France and Russia. She highlighted the role of the Bulgarian entrepreneurs who carried out commercial relations with the mentioned states. She managed to find and present valuable information regarding numerous entrepreneurs and their business activities. She shed light on the intermediation role of some powerful Bulgarian trade houses (“Pulievi-Georgievi”, “Tapchileshtovi”, etc.) in the Balkan and European trade relations. In several publications, V. Paskaleva focused on the role of the intensive foreign commercial relations for the lively craft production in a number of settlements across Ottoman Bulgaria during the Early National Revival period (second half of the 18th century) and later. Prof. Paskaleva put efforts to investigate and elaborate the problem of the “domestic”/“national” market, which continues to intrigue researchers. She paid attention to the qualities of certain economic actors, the role of immigrant entrepreneurs, the family nature of commercial activity, etc. All this represents a solid foundation for further research. It can be carried out with the help of economic theory (e.g. views on the functions of the entrepreneur) and the new economic sociology. Views on social, family and human capital, on the role of social/ entrepreneurial networks can help to systematize and present in a cogent way the uniform facts extracted from available primary sources (commercial correspondence, notebooks, contracts, etc.). It is necessary to research the available documents in Bulgarian archives and abroad. Such an investigation would help to understand a number of aspects of the Bulgarian economic development in the past.
