Гоце Делчев – портрет извън каноните

Author(s): Georgi N. Georgiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The image of Gotse Delchev is among the most recognizable in Bulgarian history, which is why talking and writing about him is both very easy and very difficult. The descriptions of the contemporaries about the external, physical appearance of the Apostle of Macedonia and about his inner, spiritual world, coincide almost completely. Above all, Gotse Delchev deserves to remain as he was remembered by the people who left testimonies about him – perhaps the kindest revolutionary, the brightest image in the history of Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO), guardian of historical justice for Macedonian Bulgarians.

Учителят Гоце Делчев

Author(s): Georgi Trenchev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

Apart from the history of the Bulgarian national liberation struggles in Macedonia and the Adrianople region, Gotse Delchev deservedly remains in the history of Bulgarian education, enlightenment and spirituality. From the time he graduated from the military school until his transition into illegality, the only legal activity that Gotse Delchev performed was teaching. Therefore, we can rightfully place him in the ranks of prominent Bulgarian revivalists, in the ranks of people’s awakeners, in the ranks of Bulgarian teachers – revolutionaries along side Botev, Levski, Rakovski and Dame Gruev.

Гоце Делчев в контекста на дисциплиниращата политика на ВМОРО към населението и кадровия състав

Author(s): Elena Aleksandrova,Elena Aleksandrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The issue of Gotse Delchev ’s inclusion in IMARO’s disciplinary policy is part of a wider debate about the Committee’s purposeful attempts to infiltrate the daily lives of its members, primarily the Bulgarian population in the Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace regions of the Ottoman Empire. This policy was important for IMARO from the point of view of expediency and raising its authority. G. Delchev showed an attitude towards the innovations that the Organization imposed in the field of revolutionary justice, education and morality. All these components were subordinated to the revolutionary purposefulness, on the one hand, and to the desire to cultivate a new civilized social order, on the other.

Among the Working Papers of a Paleographer: the Discovery of a Territory and its Culture

Author(s): Flavio Carbone,Francesca Nemore / Language(s): English Issue: 36/2018

Not long ago, the authors of this paper came across a box containing a portion of the archive of Vincenzo Federici. This discovery gave rise to a research project that involved the location, analysis, and archival arrangement of the remaining part of the archive, and the study of sources found in other archives to reconstruct the many aspects of the activity of a multifaceted academic character. The Federici Papers are also interesting because on one hand they provide a unique vision of his connection with both prominent local figures and simple folk who could help the researcher in his quest. On the other hand, they offer a very interesting representation of a large part of the Italian central and southern regions, from the years before the Second World War to the later processes of rural migration and urban concreting in the sixties. What is really interesting is the opportunity to look, through Federici, at the cultural life of rural areas in the center and south of Italy before and after the Second World War.

THE TRADITIONAL HOUSES OF BUKOVINA AND THEIR INHABITANTS: A JOURNEY OF REDISCOVERY THROUGH PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

THE TRADITIONAL HOUSES OF BUKOVINA AND THEIR INHABITANTS: A JOURNEY OF REDISCOVERY THROUGH PHOTOS AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

Author(s): Cristian Alexandru Boghian / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 29/2022

Journeying through the villages of Southern Bukovina, throughout the numerous ethnographical areas of the Suceava county, we notice, on the one hand, many traditional houses which seem to have survived the natural passage of time and on the other hand, others which struggle to keep up with the new trends in architecture and comfort. Some villages or areas seem to be live hotbeds of tourist attractions with a rich heritage while others, some multiethnic settlements, have become almost abandoned. Therefore, what is the present general state of the patrimony of traditional buildings in the rural scenery of Bukovina? Is the Land of Beeches still a realm of godliness traditions or is it at risk of becoming a shadow of unintentional kitsch? This paper with photos and text descriptions, which was completed after numerous trips and interviews with the owners of the buildings, between 2018-2020, tries to find an answer to these questions and explain the state of the architectural monuments of Bukovina and what the future has in store for these.

CONNOTATIONS OF ALIENATION IN FOLKLORIC MENTALITY

CONNOTATIONS OF ALIENATION IN FOLKLORIC MENTALITY

Author(s): Mariana Cocieru / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 30/2022

In the present approach, the author refers to the existence of the human being marked by permanent necessary transcendences, imposed or voluntary, which highlight a series of constants defining the condition of exile or emigrant of the traditional man. Whether it is through alienation, soldiering, marriage, death, transhumance, outlawry, etc., alienation or uprooting oscillates emotionally between two social environments: one, which reflects the notion of „home”, specific to a traditional folk habitat, and another – that of „black foreignness”, which includes a series of negative connotations generated by the transformations to which the emigrant subjected. Leaving parents' home or one's own home sometimes impels a perception of a habitat that is disintegrating due to forced emigration. „Home” is no longer the primary model of organizing the world, but a decomposed, ruined space. Analyzing several examples generated by the immaterial folk creation, we will notice that the „foreignness” gradually becomes autochthonous, obtaining a regional character, being associated with the neighborhood, the estate, or the neighboring village. During the research, we will notice that the reasons for alienation, uprooting, and loneliness reflected in popular creation are conclusive arguments that demonstrate realities of the past. Constantly conveyed, they allow the reconstruction of historical, social, psychological, cognitive aspects of a traditional mentality. Relevant in this sense are the folk songs through which the folklore performer expresses his emotional and emotional states related to this condition of alienation, separation from loved ones, and being in strangers. An analytical examination allows us to distinguish a complex repertoire of specific symbolic images, which emanates a different semantic load, depending on the folkloric context.

Раждане и развитие на дейността на зъботехниците В България

Author(s): Miahela Varneva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2020

The current article aims to present facts about the development of the profession of the dental technician from its origin to the formation of its present status which is a result of the great social and political changes taking place near the end of 20th and the beginning of the 21st century in Bulgaria. To achieve the goal, we studied literature sources, normative documents, personal archives, in-depth interview narratives related to the history of the association “Union of Dental Technicians in Bulgaria”. The profession begins its development as a private practice activity. The practitioners are apprentices, journey- men and dental master technicians. Along with the private practice, a small number of public laboratories and organized cooperatives emerge. After the beginning of 1974 dental technicians work only for state and departmental laboratories. Subsequently, the state dental technical laboratories are transformed into municipal ones. After 1990 dental technicians working for the state sector are given the opportunity to register and work additionally from 2 to 4 hours as private entre- preneurs. Gradually the municipal and departmental laboratories are closed. The laboratories subordinate to the dental faculties remain the only active ones and private practice becomes predominant.

A Folkloristic and Anthropological Approach to the Study of Ritual and Performance in India: Cases of Daiva-nyama (Bhoota-kolam) and Yakshagana

A Folkloristic and Anthropological Approach to the Study of Ritual and Performance in India: Cases of Daiva-nyama (Bhoota-kolam) and Yakshagana

Author(s): Svetlana Ryzhakova / Language(s): English Issue: 36/2018

The article deals with the relevance of both anthropological and folkloristic methods as “action-based” and “text-based” approaches in the study of two regional traditions in Coastal Karnataka, India – the theatrical tradition yakshagana and the ritual-performance daiva-nyama or kolam, bhoota-kolam. Both are living, orally-transmitted traditions. They are interconnected to religious culture in different ways (temple festivals, spirit worship, possession, impersonation) and both provide “mirrors” of the local social set-up. Both are based on epic traditions—pan-Indian in case of yakshagana and local in case of kolam. The paper is based on the fieldwork conducted by the author in the time period from 2013 to 2015. It addresses the distinction between these different research methods and the need to combine them when applied to this complicated reality. The author discusses some of the social and cultural aspects of yakshagana and kolam analysis, including their origin, classification and stratification. She offers a cultural interpretation of repertoire and action, describes some of the social characteristics oftroupes and of the performance context, explores their interconnection, and enquires into their social functions. The related problems of sponsorship, patronage, and gender are also described. The author argues that yakshagana and kolam appear to be an “intermediary” cultural phenomenon that connects the area’s pan-Indian heritage with local performing practices. This performance tradition is also expressive of local musical, literary, poetic, theatrical and expressive knowledge. As a drama, yakshagana is based on a written text (prasanga) and many orally transmitted elements. Kolam is enacted according to strong ritualistic vernacular plot lines and is particular to a certain place and deity. Apart from re-enacting the story, kolam appears as a peculiar social expression of joint concerns, an institution for inter-caste communication, mantic practices, etc., with a strong aesthetic overderlay. However, both enjoy certain spontaneity and both are pregnant with unpredictable turns. Both serve as an instrument of socialization, as a form of preserving and enactment of local historical memory, as a way to overcome difficulties, etc. Being cultural tools with multiple purposes, both yakshagana and kolam need to be studies from a range of different angles and perspective.

GURA SATULUI REVIEW - ROMANIAN LANGUAGE LITERARY PLATFORM IN ARAD

GURA SATULUI REVIEW - ROMANIAN LANGUAGE LITERARY PLATFORM IN ARAD

Author(s): Diana Bunaciu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 30/2022

The Gura Satului review, the first satire and humor publication issued in Arad in March 1871 after moving it’s headquarters from Pesta, came to the fore at the turn of the XXth century, as a publishing national and local landmark. The magazine does more than making fun, by holding on to thorough principles accomplished by its copy editors and contributors despite numerous drawbacks such as the censorship imposed by the foreign rulers or financial worries. For 17 years (1871-1879; 1881; January 1890; 1901-1903; 1912-1914; 1934) the magazine was for the people in Arad, a catalyst of Romanian intellectual creativity by publishing both written literature and folklore, promoting young writers and cultural soirees, and a means for reflecting those times’ reality tackled in satire and humor, in a period in which the Transylvanian history suffered numerous social and political convulsions. Last but not least, Gura Satului played an important role not only in entertainment by publishing humor literature, anecdotes, jokes but it also played a moralizing role by condemning social flaws with the aid of satire and pamphlet. But, above all, Gura Satului was a literary platform that stimulated creativity and the inclination towards literature, the reception and dissemination of the written text in Romanian language, the approach to different literary species.

Съгласително писмо на мутафчийския еснаф в Търново от 6 ноември 1872 година

Author(s): Svetla Atanasova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2023

The consent letter of Goat’s Hair Processing Guild in Tarnovo dated back in November 6, 1872 is a contract (agreement) between the members of the governing body, attached with their signatures, seals and fingerprints for compliance with certain clauses, as an integral part of the statute (law) and the rules of the corporate organization. The analysis of the preserved manuscript texts in Bulgarian answers a number of questions related to the social status and property status of the representatives of the guild of Goat’s hair processing, the level of education and literacy, the membership and the participation of master craftsmen from nearby settlements in the association. In a comparative analysis with other documents from an earlier and/or later historical period, a repetition of the names of some of the Tarnovo craft’s men (mutafchii) – participants in the board of directors, is noticeable. They are represented in various incarnations as benefactors, wealthy merchants or members of the municipal council. The graphic prints of the personal and official seals on the document, their technical parameters and artistic analysis cast new light on the biographies of their holders before 1872.The collected historical information about the activities of the goat’s-hair rugs makers’ guild in Tarnovo in 1872 – extracted from the document, is systematized and analyzed in separate annexes. These include facsimiles, a list of members of the governing body and a catalogue of the official and personal seals.

Podpułkownik Józef Kratko w przedwojennym ruchu komunistycznym, wojsku i Komendzie Głównej Milicji Obywatelskiej (1914–1945)

Author(s): Paweł Sztama / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

Józef Kratko was born in 1914 to working-class Jewish parents. At a young age he became involved with the communist movement and was an activist in several youth organizations, including the Communist Youth Union of Western Ukraine. After graduating from high school, he left for Warsaw where he studied for a year at the State Music Conservatory. During this period, he became an active member of the Communist Party of Poland and was imprisoned several times by the authorities for conducting illegal activities. At the outbreak of World War II Kratko took part in the Polish campaign, after which he fled to the Soviet Union where he worked predominantly as a music teacher. After the Germans attacked the Soviet Union in 1941 Kratko was sent by the Comintern to serve with the so-called Władysław Anders’ Army, where he was supposed to conduct agitation activities. He left this unit in 1943 and enlisted in the 1st Tadeusz Kosciuszko Infantry Division that was created by the communists. His role involved serving in various units, e.g. the Polish Independent Special Battalion. In 1944, he parachuted into occupied Poland and joined the „Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła” Organization as a political and educational officer. After the Red Army took over eastern Poland, Kratko was hired to work at the Headquarters of the Citizens’ Militia.

Puchacz z Częstochowy Porucznik pilot Hieronim Dudwał (1913–1940)

Author(s): Grzegorz Śliżewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2022

Lieutenant Hieronim Dudwał was one of the most successful fighter pilots during the initial period of World War II. He shot down four German aircraft during the 1939 Polish Campaign. After escaping across the Polish border, Dudwał arrived in France three weeks later and joined I Polish Fighter Squadron. This unit never participated in action as a whole squadron and after the German invasion of France on 10 May 1940 it was split up, with some pilots being assigned to frontline squadrons whilst others flew protective patrols over French cities that focused on war production. At the beginning of June 1940 Dudwał was moved to the frontline and posted to GC II/10 squadron. On 7 June 1940, the 27-year-old officer died when his plane crashed into „La Marre” forest after being shot down whilst singlehandedly engaging several Messerschmitt 109s. He is buried in the Polish soldier’s cemetery in Aubérive. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Cross of the War Order of Virtuti Militari.

THE EFFORTS OF THE SCRIBAN BROTHERS (NEOFIT AND FILARET) IN THE EVENTS PRECEDING THE UNION OF THE ROMANIAN PRINCIPALITIES

Author(s): Adrian Duțuc / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 32/2023

Neofit and Filaret Scriban, two very well-known Romanian clergymen, had an important contribution in that defining historical episode for what is today called Romania. Although they did not have a main role in the unfolding of the events that led to the Union of the Romanian Principalities, the Scriban brothers had an indisputable role. By their erudition recognized by all, by the fact that they were factors in the formation of public opinion through their writings and speeches, Neofit and Filaret can undoubtedly be considered as having a well-deserved place among the makers of the Union of 1859. What some historians called the "current of the Scribans" is an indisputable historical fact, an expression that demonstrates the fact that these two Romanian clerics left a contrasting imprint of their personality, culture, patriotism and faith.

POLITICAL IDEAS AND ATTITUDES IN INTERWAR SIGHISOARA

POLITICAL IDEAS AND ATTITUDES IN INTERWAR SIGHISOARA

Author(s): Ion Eugen Sârbu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 32/2023

Sighisoara was the administrative center of Târnava Mare County during the interwar period. After the union of Transylvania with Romania, the number of Romanians increased considerably in the city overtaking the Saxons until 1941. The ideas of the parties were promoted by the local politicians in the political gatherings, in the electoral campaigns and through the party press. Many of the ideas were taken from the top of the party and the central press, but some of the themes were only of local interest. Since the Romanians were disputing their city administration with the Saxons, the political discourse has strong nationalist and sometimes anti-Semitic accents. Saxons were dissatisfied and understood that in the near future, they would lose the city administration and they considered that they were wronged because the Romanians gradually occupied more and more positions in the city administration. The language was quite acidic towards political opponents, which is why libel lawsuits were quite frequent, lawsuits initiated both by some and by others. In political speeches the main themes were the escape from poverty, the "friendship" of political opponents with foreigners and especially the Saxons and Jews.
