In Travels among Europe’s Muslim Neighbours – The Quest for Democracy, two Dutch Members of the European Parliament, Joost Lagendijk and Jan Marinus Wiersma, report on their talks with leading politicians of democratic and moderate Islamist convictions in the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt and Morocco. Their accounts have a vivid quality that gives the reader the sense of having been part of their missions. The underlying theme is the search for ways in which Europe’s Muslim neighbourhood might eventually become more democratic, rather than remain – at least in the case of the Arab Mediterranean states – ruled by largely authoritarian regimes. The role of democratic Turkey as an important reference throughout the region is highlighted. Focusing upon a region in Southern Bulgaria, a region that has been the crossroads between Europe and Asia for many centuries, this book describes how former Ottoman Empire Muslims were transformed into citizens of Balkan nation-states. This is a region marked by shifting borders, competing Turkish and Bulgarian sovereignties, rival nationalisms, and migration. Problems such as these were ultimately responsible for the disintegration of the dynastic empires into nation-states. Land that had traditionally belonged to Muslims—individually or communally—became a symbolic and material resource for Bulgarian state building and was the terrain upon which rival Bulgarian and Turkish nationalisms developed in the wake of the dissolution of the late Ottoman Empire and the birth of early republican Turkey and the introduction of capitalism.By the outbreak of World War II, Turkish Muslims had become a polarized national minority. Their conflicting efforts to adapt to post-Ottoman Bulgaria brought attention to the increasingly limited availability of citizenship rights, not only to Turkish Muslims, but to Bulgarian Christians as well.

This book is about the Americanization of Yugoslav culture and everyday life during the nineteen-sixties. After falling out with the Eastern bloc, Tito turned to the United States for support and inspiration. In the political sphere the distance between the two countries was carefully maintained, yet in the realms of culture and consumption the Yugoslav regime was definitely much more receptive to the American model. For Titoist Yugoslavia this tactic turned out to be beneficial, stabilising the regime internally and providing an image of openness in foreign policy.Coca-Cola Socialism addresses the link between cultural diplomacy, culture, consumer society and politics. Its main argument is that both culture and everyday life modelled on the American way were a major source of legitimacy for the Yugoslav Communist Party, and a powerful weapon for both USA and Yugoslavia in the Cold War battle for hearts and minds. Radina Vučetić explores how the Party used American culture in order to promote its own values and what life in this socialist and capitalist hybrid system looked like for ordinary people who lived in a country with communist ideology in a capitalist wrapping. Her book offers a careful reevaluation of the limits of appropriating the American dream and questions both an uncritical celebration of Yugoslavia’s openness and an exaggerated depiction of its authoritarianism.

Afrykańska Karta Praw Człowieka i Ludów. Studium podstawy normatywnej regionalnego systemu ochrony praw człowieka

The African system, as the one most recently established, is frequently perceived as rudimentary, least developed and experiencing institutional shortcomings to such a great extent that it barely struggles to survive. Consequently, it has been attracting less scientific attention and still embodies the terra incognita for many international law scholars. The book demonstrates that, upon meticulous scrutiny, the African human rights system is a complex and persistent phenomenon founded upon numerous normative acts and evolving through a daily practice of specialized international organs. The analysis proves that it is virtually impossible to proceed with the mapping of the law of international human rights without considering recent developments in Africa. The true cornerstone of sources forming the African system was laid in 1981 with the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights by the Organization of African Unity. Therefore, the present study focuses on the Charter revealing the context of its adoption and presenting its procedural and institutional provisions as a normative backbone for the functioning of the regional system. It also provides accurate, comprehensive, methodical and critical presentation of the institutional guardians of the system: the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Court).

GOSPODARKA WOJENNA W KRÓLESTWIE POLSKIM w latach 1914–1918

W wyniku działań wojennych prowadzonych w latach 1914-1915 na terenie Królestwa Polskiego i Galicji przemysł i rolnictwo poniosły znaczne straty. W 1915 roku wywieziono do Rosji wyposażenie wielu zakładów przemysłowych. Ewakuujące się oddziały rosyjskie niszczyły drogi i infrastrukturę kolejową. Wcześniej, w październiku 1914 roku, duże zniszczenia w Królestwie spowodowały wycofujące się z guberni zachodnich wojska niemieckie. Dobrowolna i przymusowa ewakuacja ludności cywilnej do Rosji objęła ok. 1 mln osób. Spośród 1,1 mln oficerów i żołnierzy zmobilizowanych na terenie Królestwa Polskiego do wojska carskiego większość także znalazła się w Rosji.Zniszczenia w pierwszym roku wojny i wojenna gospodarka państw centralnych w Królestwie Polskim spowodowały, że w 1918 roku odłogiem leżało 4,5 mln ha ziemi uprawnej, a straty żywego inwentarza sięgały od 37 do 60%. Straty przemysłu polskiego tylko w 4% wynikały z działań wojennych; ogromną ich większość spowodowały działania wojskowych i cywilnych administracji: niemieckiej - 56%, austro-węgierskiej - 22% i rosyjskiej - 18%.W związku z setną rocznicą Wielkiej Wojny (1914-1918) zainteresowanie badaczy jej dziejami przeżywa renesans. W Europie i świecie ukazuje się wiele opracowań, monografii i artykułów, głównie dotyczących kwestii wojskowych i politycznych I wojny światowej. Historycy pomijają natomiast zagadnienia natury gospodarczej. Podobnie jest w Polsce. Brak zainteresowania problematyką ekonomiczną nasi historycy tłumaczyli niedostateczną ilością źródeł, głównie archiwaliów, zniszczonych podczas pierwszej i drugiej wojny światowej. Autor recenzowanej książki udowodnił jednak, że wiele źródeł na tematy gospodarcze czasów Wielkiej Wojny zachowało się, chociaż ich odnalezienie wymagało dużego nakładu pracy.Z recenzji wydawniczej prof. dr. hab. Janusza SzczepańskiegoEdward Kołodziej (ur. 1940) - historyk i archiwista, absolwent Wydziału Historycznego Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, wieloletni pracownik Archiwum Akt Nowych w Warszawie. W latach 1999-2010 wykładowca w Instytucie Historii Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie, gdzie uzyskał tytuł profesora zwyczajnego. Jego zainteresowania badawcze obejmują głównie historię okresu międzywojennego, zwłaszcza zagadnienia ruchu zawodowego, migracji ludności, dziejów Polonii, działalności polskiej służby dyplomatycznej i konsularnej oraz historię gospodarczą. Autor i redaktor naukowy ponad 250 publikacji naukowych. W 2017 roku w Wydawnictwie Naukowym Scholar ukazała się jego książka Polska i inne państwa wobec problemów reparacji i długów zagranicznych w latach 1918-1939.

Współczesna diaspora asyryjsko-aramejska w Szwecji

The publication discusses up-to-date issues concerning the acculturation of a Middle Eastern group in a European country. The book is based on research conducted by the Author in 2014 in the Assyrian/Aramean diaspora in Sweden, within the framework of the “Defining and Identifying Middle Eastern Christian Communities in Europe” project. Assyrians/Arameans began to arrive in Scandinavia in the late 1960s, fleeing the wars and meagre economic prospects in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. Today, they constitute an active diaspora which contributes in various ways to the development of its new homeland and numbers around 150 000 people. The Author describes Swedish migration and integration policies, the history of the Assyrian/Aramean community in the Middle East, the phases and forms of institutionalisation in Sweden, internal dynamics as well as the group’s relations with external actors and its transnational links. One of the main findings of the book is that the ethno-national identity of this community was largely constructed in the Swedish diaspora and is considerably more complex than it had previously been described in research. The identity in question is not a single construct, but rather a few – if not a few dozen – variants, although polarisation resulting from the divide between Assyrians and Arameans/Suryoye/Syriacs is visible.
