The article analyses the endogenous development characteristics of chosen Croatian counties. The analysis suggests that the position on the Western border of the country positively influences the development capacity of Croatian counties. Development 25 performances of the Vukovar-Srijem County are analyzed with regard to previous insight. Considerable asymmetries between successful Croatian counties and the Vukovar-Srijem County are found. Therefore, optimizing mechanisms are proposed as an operational plan for the leverage of development asymmetries. These policies are proposed in order to avoid the deepening of existing asymmetries in the context of the Croatian integration to the European Union.

Eastern Croatia, usually regarded as the region consisting of the two counties of Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem, has experienced deep changes in recent Croatian history both socio-economically and socio-culturally. 97 In this paper the authors analyse some of these changes in the Vukovar-Srijem County. All the suffering of the non-Serbian population in the Croatian War of Independence, the destruction and plundering of economic potential and the siege that lasted until 1997 left deep scars in the post-war years. The slow economic recovery, feeble demographic renewal (return of the exiled), unfavourable educational structure of the population, high unemployment rate, low individual and social standard, are just some of the indicators of the transition of the Vukovar region. The socio-economic picture of Eastern Croatia also includes problems of coexistence, problems that can be summarised within the concept of mistrust. The latter is, in terms of economic discourse, reflected in the non-existence or lack of social capital. This issue is dealt with in the first part of the paper. The second, however, deals with the data referring to the demographic and economic state and changes occurring in the last fifteen years. In addition to the rise of numerous small enterprises, an important role is allocated to big economic subjects and the need for stronger cooperation. The importance of selective revival of the economy, building of the infrastructure, as well as investing in the education of young people and the social standard of this area are the only way to raising the level of trust and keeping social peace. This is also a means of helping this region join the more developed and economically more prosperous parts of Croatia.

In the history of Vukovar there have been prosperous periods as well as periods of the town's decreasing importance and spatial impact. As an outstandingly prosperous period remain the 18th and 19th centuries when Vukovar was among the three most important urban centres of Eastern Croatia, together with Osijek and Zemun. Vukovar was primarily the centre of trade and crafts but also became an important port on the Danube river. In the 20th century the most important transportation routes in the region moved further away and left Vukovar at the positional margin within the region. However, some positional characteristics have remained as advantages of Vukovar. Vukovar is the only Croatian town and river-port situated on the Danube. Due to the fact that the Danube river flows marginally through Croatia, Vukovar is also a town situated right on the international border. As a town on the Danube, Vukovar has no other town in Croatia to compete with, which is illustrated by figures of total cargo handled in Croatian river-ports. As a town situated on the international border, Vukovar was exposed to Serbian aggression in the 1990s and therefore suffered from the negative impacts of its position. The positive effects that may come out of Vukovar's position of a border-town remain a possibility to be realised in the future.

As the Republic of Croatia's joining NATO is becoming more credible and the time until its acceptance into full membership is becoming shorter, debates on this issue are intensifying, causing much interest in the Croatian public and often resulting in greater or lesser polarisation. One of the main factors affecting the forming of public opinion are also non-governmental organisations, which have different approaches to almost all societal, political, economic and social issues in Croatian society as well as to the question of Croatia's approaching NATO. In that context, a research has been conducted in order to define the attitudes of a part of non-governmental organisations about the Republic of Croatia's approaching NATO as well as their perception of NATO in changed international circumstances. Research has shown that a great number of non-governmental organisations and their memberships are against Croatia's joining NATO. Also, non-governmental organisations are demanding a referendum about the approach of Croatia to NATO, which should be preceded by a broad public discussion and the introduction of full, correct and equitable information about the advantages and disadvantages or non-approaching of Croatia to NATO and the possible alternatives of security systems as well as the expense of their development.

Learning strategies are procedures or techniques that learners can use to facilitate a learning task. While some learning strategies are observable, most strategies are mental processes that are not directly observable. The investigation of personality factors is often mentioned to be important for gaining deeper insights into learning strategies. In this article we discuss the relationship between personality factors such as language anxiety, self-concept, previously achieved language learning experience and language learning strategies in different EFL education levels. A total of 833 Croatian learners took part in this exploratory study: 330 primary school learners, 309 secondary school learners and 194 university undergraduates. All the subjects learned EFL as a compulsory school subject or university course. Four instruments were used for this study: language learning anxiety, self-concept, previously achieved language learning experience, and use of language learning strategies. The One-way Analysis of Variance indicated that the mean of the scores regarding the use of learning strategies significantly differ among the three groups. Furthermore, the results indicated that there was a significant relation between language anxiety, self-concept and previously achieved language learning experience with language learning strategies.

In this research the author detects some elements that citizens of the [pinut neighborhood observe as important and precedent for quality of life, which affects living satisfaction in Špinut . Kevin Lynch's method is used, who in his book, "The Image of the City" considers visual qualities of American cities by researching mental images of specific towns, reported by their citizens. He is especially concentrated on city legibility, respectively the easiness of recognizing and organizing all parts of the city into a coherent system. In the 279 interview, questions similar to Lynch's are used. The interview was carried out similarly, the data processed and presented in this paper. However, the research objective was different. The paper presents research results regarding the following topics: advantages and disadvantages of the Špinut neighborhood, neighborhood borders, its main features, traffic, functional equipment, the look of the neighborhood, orientation points and unpleasant image of the neighborhood. The results show that the respondents are satisfied with living in Špinut. The findings, as a suggestion, can be useful for planners, investors, city authorities and scientists.

Although the psychology of personality has been more than explored through scientific psychological literature, especially the field of psychophysiology of personality that has been established by the well-known Eysenck's Dimensional Theory of Personality (1967) using various psychophysiological measures, recently the emphasis has been on application of the Evoked Brain Potential Method. Using the newest information considering this method, this paper presents its basics, its advantages and limitations in application, and some studies of extraversion that have been using the ERP- -method.

In this paper the authors discuss the main factors influencing the changes in demographic and economic structures of the Vukovar-Srijem County from years 1857 to 2001. Greatest attention is given to the analysis of the overall and natural population trends, migration saldo and economic structure according to activity and sector in the years 1971 to 2001. Comparative analysis of changes in the Vukovar-Srijem County and Croatia regarding the overall number of inhabitants from 1857 to 2001 and the natural trends and economic-social structure according to activity and sector from 1971 to 2001 has been used to research the specific traits of this county’s population development. The research shows that throughout the studied period migration has had an important impact on changes both in demographic and economic-social structures. After the 2nd World War up to the 1960s this county was emphatically immigrational, while after that period it becomes emigrational. In the analysis of the overall population trends and of the population “within the country” for the Vukovar- Srijem County, certain quantitatively measurable demographic effects have been identified occurring as a consequence of being employed abroad in the 1960s. It has been determined that the Greater Serbian aggression against Croatia, and within it against the Vukovar-Srijem County, apart from taking huge human and material casualties, has radicalised all the unfavourable demographic processes in that county.

This article describes the development of Croatian markers for the measurement of the Big-Five personality model, in the form of bipolar and unipolar rating scales. A sample of students (N=250) used these scales to describe themselves, and they were also described by 250 of their best acquaintances on the same instruments. All four data sets (self-ratings and peer- -ratings with bipolar and unipolar markers) showed clear five- -factor structures. These factors were clearly and strongly related on a one-to-one basis with the American Big-Five model, measured with the Croatian version of IPIP instrument (Mla~i} & Goldberg, 2007). The examination of the relations of factor structures between self and peer ratings confirmed the equivalency of Big-Five correspondent dimensions in both rating procedures. All of the above-mentioned results suggest the use of Croatian Big-Five factor markers in future research.

In 1932, when the economic crisis ruled both the world and Croatian economy, the production of the first completely industrially manufactured shoes in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia began at “Bata”, a factory in Borovo, near Vukovar. In its beginnings the factory employed not more than a hundred workers, but by 1939 this number grew up to 4000 workers, the highest ever number of employees in the history of this factory. Taking into consideration the number of employees, the whole production and scope of the invested capital, “Bata” was one of the biggest factories in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between the two wars. The factory was located in Borovo, a place which had been chosen for its very favourable geographical position enabling good traffic connections not only within the borders of the Kingdom but also with other countries. While the factory was being built, residential housing projects were erected. In addition to industrial labour, the social and economic wellbeing of the employees, the so-called “Bata” cooperants, were not neglected. Vukovar was then transformed from the administrative centre of the Srijem County together with its outskirts, into an industrial centre. Later, in the postwar period, especially since the 1950s, the factory served as a foundation for strong economic and demographic growth of the city of Vukovar

The City of Vukovar has, due to Serbian aggression during many months of attacks and siege and throughout the six-year period of occupation, suffered greatly regarding both human losses and material damages in all spheres of its citizens’ economic and social lives. The numerous and complex effects of the war represent an extremely negative determinant of postwar (peaceful) reconstruction and revitalisation of the demographic, social and economic picture of Vukovar. Thousands of people killed, some twenty thousand displaced persons and ten billion kuna worth of war damages in housing units, economic, communal and transport infrastructure – are only rough numerical indicators of the size and structure of the consequences caused by Serbian military aggression against Vukovar. Despite the aftermath of war, all the casualties and destruction, the City of Vukovar has managed to retain most of its transport and geographic features based on which, if given the right strategy of social, economic and spatial development, the city and its surroundings could prosper.
