We can talk of tolerance, neutrality and impartiality as regards our personal, ethical sphere, and as regards the political sphere, i. e. as regards political morality. Under ethics I am thinking of the exploration of what it means to live well. Namely, ethics in the widest sense in which this term is being used, teaches us what our personal ideals, projects and persuasions should be like, as well as when and how far we have to sacrifice our own interests because of others on behalf of morality. Political philosophy is the consciousness of a political perspective. It describes ideals and principles which we should accept as a foundation of collective acting.

Peter Russell, the author of the famous books The Book of the Brain and The World Brain, talks about evolution problems from the point of view of communication, formulating an answer to the famous question of aspiring high-school kids: "What comes after man?". His starting point is the view of "primitive" (non-technological) societies according to which our planet Earth (Gaea in Greek) is a living being. "We have recently, through several various scientific methods, started to realize that Earth could indeed be a living organism. There are various long-range processes in the biosphere system that can not be completely explained by convetional physical chemistry.

Until this war in Bosnia I had never before been aware of how much good was brought to me, in the cognitive sense, by the fact that I was born on the border with another country. My birthplace, Gola, is situated on the very border, so that the gardens of last homes, next to the banks of driedup creek Zdalica, metaphorically touch the borderline, since it runs there in the very middle of the creek bed, in the neighborhood of an international borderline crossing from Republic Croatia to Hungary.

There is a presentation of regional vocabulary associated with state institutions and its administration, excerpted from the weekly 'Chata Rodzinna' published in Kovno in the years 1922-1940. Words which were unusual for ethnic Polish in the Interwar period are analyzed here. Forms influenced by Russian (20 lexemes) and of Lithuanian origin seem predominant in the samples. Old vocabulary (8 units) forms another group. The most numerous part of vocabulary of Russian origin indicates the great impact of political dependence on Russia in official terminology. Among 43 excerpted lexemes, 14 ones still function in Polish used in Northern Borderland, which proves their strong roots in the speech of the Poles inhabiting these areas today.

Dictionary of Language Errors by J. Szwed, published in Vilnius in 1931, is worth linguistsí attention, particularly those interested in Polish language used by inhabitants of the Northern Borderlands and experts in lexis of the Interwar period. The dictionary contains authentic language materials excerpted from learnersí compositions, press, literature as well as 'everyday Polish'. The handbook written by a Vilnius teacher of Polish completes our knowledge about Polish language used after the Partition period.

150th anniversary of Adam Mickiewiczís death has become an occasion to check which of the winged words of the national Polish poet function in the journalistic area of contemporary Polish public discourse and how 240 units have been distinguished and compared with the selection of Mickiewiczian words used in Skrzydlate s³owa (Winged Words) by H. Markiewicz and A. Romanowski as well as in three dictionaries of Polish. The comparison has led to the following conclusions: 1. most winged words of Mickiewiczian origin have not been registered in dictionaries of standard Polish; 2. the meanings of most Mickiewiczian words have not been defined, and those which have been defined need to be re-defined; 3. Mickiewiczian words have different usage in the Polish discourse and appear in various formal and semantic forms. Due to their significant role in Polish language and in Polish culture code, they need to be fully listed, defined and introduced into dictionaries of standard and specialized Polish.

The paper presents some quantitative data concerning the number of native speakers of the official languages in the EEC and the EU member states. Chances and threats of Polish in the EU are discussed with regard to the number of its native speakers (demographic aspect), its geographic position, its linguistic characteristics, as well as economic and cultural conditions. Special attention is paid to such factors influencing the prestige of Polish, as the level of education in Poland and the international importance of Russian. Finally, a preliminary list of consequences of the low prestige of Polish in the EU is presented.

On the 13th of January 1945 the Red Army entered German territory in Eastern Prussia. This was the beginning of a military operation which lasted 103 days and resulted in the defeat of the German Wehrmacht in Prussia and Northern Poland, finally in the edn of World War II. This fight had been fought not only by weapons, but also using propaganda. There is a rumor about a pamphlet, where inter alia the reader found the calling: "Break by force the Racist Chauvinism of the German Women! Take them as your rightful Prey! Ilja Ehrenburg, the most successful Russian war correspondent is supposed to be the author of this pamphlet The Author of this essay tries not only to trace the history of this pamphlet and its colportage until nowadays, she also reviews Ehrenburg's reportages as war correspondent and the virulent foe images between Russians and Germans.
