About some aspects of the educational ethos and consumption

About some aspects of the educational ethos and consumption

O niektórych aspektach etosu edukacyjnego i konsumpcji

Author(s): Sławomir Futyma / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: education; consumption; educational ethos; educational market

The article describes the changes in the attitude of scholars. These changes relate to the understanding of what knowledge is, and therefore which purposes this knowledge serves. This text draws attention to the fact that often the decisive element in the value of transferred knowledge is the economic factor. This modern utilitarianism, appropriated people with their ambitions and skills. Thus, in this reflection, we find discussion about the value of knowledge, scholars’ attitudes, the role and place of education in the modern world, and factors that modify the shape of modern education and its officers such as: selfishness or consumer rationality.

The appetite for knowledge? About the research perspective of cognitive consumerism

Apetyt na wiedzę? O perspektywie badania konsumpcjonizmu poznawczego

Author(s): Helena Ostrowicka / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: dispositif of knowledge society; university; cognitive consumerism; usefulness of knowledge

The aim of the article is to present the perspective of the study on the relationship between the university and the wider area of practice in terms of cognitive consumerism, which is both the problem and the solution coming from the interior of the so-called dispositif of knowledge society. I develop the concept of dispositif of knowledge society, proposed by Marek Czyżewski, indicating new analytical categories. I justify heuristic and analytical potential of the research on university, the consumption of scientific knowledge and the production of its “utility” through the prism of law mechanisms, discipline and safety. An important part of the article is a reflection on the imperative of the knowledge society in a competitive market.

The release of subjectivity by freeing up school time. On the commodification of identity, culture of competence and a certain possibility of escaping compulsory individualization

Uwolnienie podmiotowości przez u-wolnienie czasu szkoły. O komodyfikacji tożsamości, kulturze kompetencji i o pewnej możliwości wyjścia z zatrzasku indywidualizacji

Author(s): Karolina Starego / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: fetishization of identity; neoliberalization of education; educationalization; learnification; culture of competence; free time

The main purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanisms of commodification and fetishization of identity, which in the neoliberal, individualistic context, are tied with the process of the creation of entrepreneurial self. M My aim is also to describe how these processes function in schools and in the wider, educational context. Two phenomena, described by contemporary educational research – the educationalization/pedagogization, and the reduction of the importance of schools that comes with the popularity of the notion of “learning” – play important role in my analysis. M My second purpose is to present an alternative way of thinking about education – understood as a process of de-subjectivization, of leaving the dominant rationalities behind; and schools understood as places where people are free from the influence of social and economic factors and thus experience “free time”. I In this context I I locate the main thesis of the paper – about the necessity of breaking with the subject-centered paradigm of change.

Pedagogy of (not only) consumed things

Pedagogy of (not only) consumed things

Pedagogika rzeczy (nie tylko) konsumowanych

Author(s): Maksymilian Chutorański,Aneta Makowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: pedagogy of things; consumerism society; consumer; materiality; things

In this article we pose the question about the essence of things in the world of continuous consumption. We formulate a thesis that understanding materiality as the objects of consumption does not allow us to perceive complex (including educational aspect) relationships between human beings and things. In the first part of the article, we ask what things are through the perspective of critics of consumerism and point out some limitations of this perspective. In the last part of the article, we emphasize the need for pedagogy of things i.e. the reflection on things in educational processes that focuses on their role in supporting human development.

Man non-enslaved. From the Hellenistic Stoics educators to postmodern orgy of desires

Człowiek nie-zniewolony. Od hellenistycznych wychowawców stoików do ponowoczesnej orgii pragnień

Author(s): Tomasz Olchanowski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: homo inhumanus; hubris; stoicism; desire; logorea; imagopathy; selfie

The article is an attempt to juxtapose the ideal of man postulated by Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius with postmodern tyranny of success and manic-narcissistic vision of human nature. The basis for discussion is the standpoint of Peter Sloterdijk, who said that in highly developed cultures, upbringing and education are influenced by inhibitory factors and depriving of the brakes factors. A human being, who frightened in the Hellenistic period, as a violation of “hubris” madman, now functions as imagopathy, a perfect product, living in a world of possibilities and the blurring of the boundaries between the real and the virtual.

Consumerism in culture and music education. An outline of the issue

Konsumpcjonizm w kulturze i edukacji muzycznej. Zarys problematyki i wymiaru zjawiska

Author(s): Alicja Tupieka-Buszmak / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: culture; consumption; music; education

The article presents subjective and critical analysis of current music education. The analysis is based on long and meditative pedagogical experience. The most visible problem of modern musical culture is inconsistency of musical reality, in which young people live and the language of Music subject. It is mainly connected with the ignorance of characteristic modern social practices such as consumerism and inapplicability of didactic aims in music. In my opinion it is one of the main reasons of discrepancy between music curriculum and musical aspirations and interests of students. The aim of this article is to present current model of music education, indicate weaknesses of this issue and show eventual possibilities in changing the approach of young people to art music. The article is divided into a few sections, which present basic issues about music education, the recognition of symptoms of consumerism and the conclusion.

Benefit from education. Consequences of the free market for pre-school education in Poland

Zyskać na edukacji? Konsekwencje działań wolnorynkowych dla funkcjonowania edukacji przedszkolnej w Polsce

Author(s): Jolanta Sajdera / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: free market in education; local government; profit-making kindergartens

The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the changes in the functioning of education in free market conditions. Due to the broad area of issues, the author focuses on the financing of preschool education, which is in a special way connected with the political and economic situation of our country. The author is looking for answers to the question concerning the consequences of the free-market environment for pre-school education resulting from the transfer of public tasks to the private for-profit sector and the introduction of the principles of the private sector to the work of public institutions. The author compares the content of the Ministry of Education’s regulations concerning the organization of pre-school education, with the information contained in the CSO and Social Diagnosis reports. In this way, the author points out the consequences of the instability of educational policy for financial decisions at the local level, which can lead to the growth of social trust crisis.

Consumer behaviour of teachers during professional training versus meeting the need for self-development

Consumer behaviour of teachers during professional training versus meeting the need for self-development

Zachowania konsumenckie doskonalących się nauczycieli a zaspokajanie potrzeby samorealizacji

Author(s): Agnieszka Olechowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2016

Keywords: consumer behaviour of teachers; teacher’s self-development; teacher’s professional development

Professional development is a constitutive feature of the teaching profession. Taking action to improve and broaden professional skills is today an important element in assessing the quality of teachers’ work, and also the work of educational institutions, in which they are employed. It would therefore be expected that in order to improve themselves, teachers choose such forms of activities (studies, professional courses, trainings, etc.) that meet a real need for self-realization and serve to improve the quality of their work. The purpose of the text is to present the activities undertaken by teachers leading to improve their professional competences as consumer behaviour. The article consists of a brief introduction on the most important theoretical concepts such as consumption and consumer behaviour, presenting the assumptions and results of quantitative and qualitative research conducted in a group of teachers and conclusions. The text ends with a conclusion that consumer behaviour of teachers does not allow them to meet the real, but only apparent need for self-development. The features of professional development chosen by the teachers to satisfy this need prove this conclusion.

Keywords: Occupy Movement; democracy; resistance; social movements

The text constitutes a review of the book by Michael A. Gould-Wartofsky, titled The Occupiers. The Making of The 99 Percent Movement. Occupy Movement was undoubtedly an event that still raises emotions and multiplicity of interpretations. Occupy Movement has overgrown with myths and misunderstandings. The book The Occupiers, written from a position of researcher-participant, may help to identify myths and misconceptions, as well as contribute to the development of the debate in Poland.

Death of Methodius

Успение Методиево

Author(s): Klimentina Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/1999

Death of Methodius (Uspenie Metodievo) is a short text of a saint’s vita, discovered by P. Preis in the Frushkovorsk Monastery of Kudezhdin. The manuscript (a not versified prologue) has been identified with a code from the collection of the Museum of Church Art in Sremska Mitrovica No. 323, but the major part of it was destroyed after Preis had worked with the manuscript. The lost work, dedicated to St. Methodius, was found in the Preis archives. Preis had copied in an extremely accurate way the entire text and this gives grounds to introduce in science the work now in its entirety and not only on the basis of extracts from it known from the correspondence of Preis. The prologue, not in verse form in which it was placed, constitutes an independent redaction of the monument. Death of Methodius is a work created on the basis of the two Detailed Vitae of SS. Cyril and Methodius and of some other sources which for the time being are not known to us. The work reflects the interpretation of the cult of SS. Cyril and Methodius in the initial period of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, probably not later than the early 13th с. (up to the Council of 1211 ) when the Bulgarian Church formed the pantheon of its saints. Death of Methodius shows great closeness to Death of Cyril both as regards the ideas embodied in it and in its structure and composition and the way of using the cources. It is a proof that in Turnovo during the 13th с. they were familiar with the texts of the two Detailed Vitae.

Further Studies on the Paraphrastic Christmas Canon of Constantine of Preslav with a Different Reading of the End of its Acrostic

Дальнейшее исследование Рождественского парафрастического канона Константина Преславского с иным прочтением концовки его акростиха

Author(s): Evgenii Vereščagin / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 4/1999

The article is dedicated to the Christmas canon of Constantine of Preslav recently discovered by G. Popov (see Palaeobulgarica, 21, 1997, No. 4). A study is made of the relationship between the troparia in the Christmas canon of John Damascene which was used by the Old Bulgarian writer, and the corresponding troparia in the original canon of Constantin of Preslav, using two hitherto unstudied copies of the canon of the 14th с. (in the collection of A. Khludov in the State History Museum in Moscow – Nos 164 and 166). The article offers reasons also for a new reading of the end of the acrostic: егоже род[и напъп]ο плоти стая instead егоже род истая оплот[а наша].

The Slavic Lingual Presence in the Docheiariou Monastery

The Slavic Lingual Presence in the Docheiariou Monastery

Author(s): Cyril Pavlikyanov / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/1999

The main goal of the article is to provide a detailed description of all the Slavic manuscripts and documents in the library of Docheiariou. The only documents written in a Slavic vernacular of Bulgarian type, that were identified in the Docheiariou archive, concerned the donations granted to the monastery by the rulers of Moldavia. They pertain to the history of the transdanubian districts where Slavs have always been a minority, so they cannot be qualified as purely Slavic documents. The Slavic manuscripts in the library of Docheiariou are only nine and some of them are preserved in rather poor, fragmentary condition. Some manuscripts bear traces of older numbers and it seems that these numbers correspond to the list described by Sp. Lambros in his catalogue of the Greek athonite codices.

The Meaning of the Term трьстаѣ in the Glagolitic Euchology of Sinai

Значението на термина трьстаѣ в Синайския евхологии

Author(s): Elena Velkovska / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/1999

In the celebration of the Vespers of the Whitsunday in the glagolitic Euchology of Sinai is found the term трьстаѣ which has never been satisfactorily translated and explained neither from a linguistic or from a liturgical point of view. In the present note the structure of the Vespers is analysed, the text of the deacon’s litany from the new leaves is reconstructed and an explanation of our term is reached. Трьстаѣ does not mean “Trisaghion”, as all scholars had thought, but expresses, although incorrectly, the rare technical term τρίστιχος meaning “deacon’s litany of three petitions” (such as, for instance, the “small Ekteny” in the modern Slavonic practice).

New Views on King Ivan Shishman and the End of the Kingdom of Turnovo According to Data from Mediaeval Manuscripts

Нови виждания за цар Иван Шишман и края на Търновското царство по данни от средновековните ръкописи

Author(s): Nikolaj Ovčarov,Dimitar Stoimenov / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/1999

An attempt is made in this study to throw light on the last years of the Kingdom of Turnovo (1393–1395) by analyzing little known mediaeval documents and handwritten books. The author divides the sources into two groups: documents directly reflecting the resistance put up by Ivan Shishman in 1393–1395; a remarkable cycle of works in verse and prose by Bulgarian writers of the epoch, containing deep-felt prayers for the victory of Bulgarian arms over the Turks. To the first group are referred by miraculously preserved letter-orders from Ivan Shishman to his commanders that have survived on the last page of manuscript No. 298 of the Library of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. Revised are also an Octoechos-paracletic of 1393–1395 (SS Cyril and Methodius National Library, No. 180/313), as well as a Missal of the 17th c., constituting a copy of a manuscript of the 14th с. (SS Cyril and Methodius National Library, No. 621). A discovery of the authors is a gloss with the name of Ivan Shishman in manuscript No. 301 of the Library of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. The new pieces of information contribute to the elucidation of the precise place in history of such a controversial ruler as Ivan Shishman.

An Apocryphal Text About the Last Judgement on the Murals of the “Holy Apostles” Cathedral Church in Turnovo

Апокрифен текст за Второто пришествие от стенописите на търновската катедрална църква „Св. Апостоли“

Author(s): Zarko Zhdrakov / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 4/1999

Sts Apostles Peter and Paul’ is a 15th century Turnovo cathedral church where on the Deisis composition is written a text on the scroll of St. John the Baptist, which in itself is quite remarkable in terms of mural epigraphy, enlivened by an Old-Bulgarian apocrypha called “Bartholomew Seeking Answers from the Holy Mother about the End of the World”. The text however, reveals a period of great artistic variety when reflecting the anticipation of the Last Judgement. One out of many autographs belonging to icon-painter Nicholas is placed within the Prayer Composition (on the maphorion of the Holy Mother, just above the tassels),thus adding much more meaning to the apocryphal text. The decisions of the Florentine Union (1439) has probably influenced the master to make his own interpretations of the mysterious words said by the Holy Mother in Greek, in order to express his attitude towards the apostates from the Orthodox religion. The contents of the apocryphal text are connected by separate themes treating the iconographie programme.
