PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF INTERCULTURAL PEDAGOGY THEORY IN MUSIC EDUCATION

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF INTERCULTURAL PEDAGOGY THEORY IN MUSIC EDUCATION

PRAKTYCZNE ZASTOSOWANIA TEORII PEDAGOGIKI MIĘDZYKULTUROWEJ W EDUKACJI MUZYCZNEJ

Author(s): Jarosław Chaciński / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2015

Keywords: intercultural music education; world music; music curriculum; folk music; classical music; artistic stylization

The primary goal of this essay is to describe the connections between intercultural pedagogical theory and its practical applications in music education. The author stresses the significance of this particular field of education and its impact on young people. When anchored in a variety of cultures, musical phenomena provide a unique opportunity to initiate students into a world in which the beauty and aesthetic values of the other are experienced and reflected upon. At the same time, they encourage students to engage in a dialogue with the other through non-verbal channels of communication. Intercultural music education usually follows two conceptual models: one centered on activities, such as singing, dance, and playing musical instruments, and the other, focusing on the listening experience to world music. Intercultural music education is typically pursued using folk music as the most primeval form of human activity. Folk music is also used as an inspiration for musical stylization. It must be emphasized that composers often used this source of inspiration to create outstanding musical works. Sacred music provides a unique means to engage with the spiritual sphere inherent in other cultures. This particular form helps to discover aesthetic qualities in music and explore the depths of religious experience in other people, as well as the space of their religion-driven existential pursuits that are exemplified in music.

AN OUTLINE OF A TEACHING AID FOR SLOVAK MUSIC PEDAGOGY

AN OUTLINE OF A TEACHING AID FOR SLOVAK MUSIC PEDAGOGY

AN OUTLINE OF A TEACHING AID FOR SLOVAK MUSIC PEDAGOGY

Author(s): Renata Kočišová / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2015

Keywords: music education; didactic interpretation of the opera; teaching aid; Eugen Suchoň

A mission of current as well as future generations of pedagogues is to search for a balance between supranational politico-economic interests and the presentation of nationalhistoric-artistic roots. Despite the many efforts by humanists, it is still true that historic memory and veneration of national values is not a strong aspect of Slovak society. Lifelong education through art could bring a shift in the quality of appreciating cultural accomplishments. Artists and their most significant masterpieces are examples which attract attention abroad as well as at home. In contemporary music education, such development in the dissemination of information which uses new technologies as well as playful and undemanding methods enriches the teaching process with a range of teaching aids and applies an individual approach to each student in the class is expected. An example for opening such a dialogue between a teacher and a student which would allow entrance into the operatic“world” of national schools are the works of such significant personalities as B. Smetana, S. Moniuszko, F. Erkel, E. Suchoň and others. National awakening, relating to traditions, the choice of literary bases, music script, or the composer’s synthetism of these central- European music personalities, are a source of continuous analyses, discussion topics, and educational activities. Opera as an exclusive form for the exacting, so-called gesamtkunstwerk,is, in the pedagogical process, a highly demonstrative form and it is necessary to treat it didactically in such a way so that it is intelligible for younger generations, musically or otherwise gifted. The contribution presents the possibility of introducing the opera “Katrena” – a piece from the period of Slovak musical modernism - with elements of verism, Brechtian and Janáček-esque theatre – swayed by political regulations into the primary school classroom. The teaching aid – a music presentation – comprises a chronologically organized audiovisual overview of the opera. It includes a workbook by means of which teachers obtains feedback about the creativity and knowledge of their students. In this way, the audio information is transferred and intensified by other sensory information, which might bring a memory trace of higher quality. The main objective of this study is to indicate how to involve a Slovak opera – or its audiovisual recording – in teaching music at our schools. The process of involving the matter is taking place within the framework of pedagogical interpretation of a specific opera work. The efforts of the author of the study have resulted in completing a DVD containing the crucial extracts of the opera and a workbook – both representing an interlinked teaching aid for the purposes in question.

THE PHENOMENON OF MULTICULTURAL INSPIRATIONS IN WORKS OF MODERN GDAŃSK COMPOSERS

ZJAWISKO MIĘDZYKULTUROWYCH INSPIRACJI W TWÓRCZOŚCI WSPÓŁCZESNYCH KOMPOZYTORÓW ŚRODOWISKA GDAŃSKIEGO

Author(s): Joanna Schiller-Rydzewska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2015

Keywords: Gdańsk; modern composers; multicultural inspirations; music in Gdańsk; Gdańsk’s composers milieu; artistic milieu; music in Tricity and Pomerania Region

Multicultural inspirations in the works of modern composers from Gdańsk are phenomenathat became a part of tradition, social structure, geographical situation, and the historyof Gdańsk. In the diversified musical environment of the post-war Gdańsk, the threegroups of composers active in the city are recognized. The first group includes the native- born composers; the second group consists of composers who came from differentparts of Poland and settled in Gdańsk; the third group (the most difficult to compartmentalize) includes composers temporarily living in the city. The examination of artistic achievements of Gdańsk composers after the Second War World reveals three distinct domains of multicultural inspirations. The first involves cultural fascination with remote places of Europe and the world. The second draws on inspiration from the native folk culture, including the Kashubian folklore. The third domain borrows from the mass culture that aspires to the rank of sophisticated art.

THE FIGURE OF A GYPSY MUSICIAN AND A ROMANTIC VIRTUOSO. A BRIEF SKETCH OF SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

POSTAĆ MUZYKA CYGAŃSKIEGO I ROMANTYCZNEGO WIRTUOZA. KRÓTKIE STUDIUM PODOBIEŃSTW I RÓŻNIC

Author(s): Anna G. Piotrowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2015

Keywords: Gypsy musician; Gypsies; virtuoso; rhapsode/rhapsodist; improvisation

The paper discusses the identity of a Gypsy musician and explains the conditions underwhich this figure can be identified as a prototypical romantic virtuoso. Since improvisingartists were heavily criticised in the early 19th century as those contaminating the true art, they soon became the objects of ambivalent perceptions: admired for their command of the instrument and, at the same time, eschewed by professional musicians. In the 1840s, Gypsy musicians became more appreciated as the their culture and history began gaining currency among scholars. Since Gypsy musicians relied heavily on oral tradition, they were often associated with the practice of improvisation. This common perception of the Gypsy musician – so deeply indebted in the romantic ideology of alienated genius – became one of the most stereotyped images of Gypsies in the European culture.

Author(s): Wiktoria Draganczuk / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 4/2015

Keywords: literary-musical discourse; commandments of a spiritual-moral self-improvement;“cognation law”; choral symphony; cantata

This essay investigates the musical works on the texts by the leading Ukrainian philosopher H. Skovoroda. It is argued that Skovoroda developed specific commandments designed for a spiritual/moral self-improvement. The first commandment relates to a vision of the world order. According to Skovoroda, the human being has two distinct natures: (1) the external body and (2) the internal divine. The manifestation of the latter relates to a meaning of life: to awake the divine light in order “to conquer death”. The second commandment sees “the joy of the heart as the light of God’s love”. The “know thyself” call, indicates the true path of knowledge, because the “inner” human reflects the spark of God. These commandments are utilized in the choral symphony: Know Yourself by A. Szczecinskiy, and the cantata: Temnere Mortem by L. Grabowskiy. The third commandment is “cognation law”. “Cognation”relates to the notion of national identity and the community’s response to it.
