Knulp

Knulp

Author(s): Ştefan Borbély / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 04/2009

Ştefan Borbély analyses in his essay dedicated to Herman Hesse’s short story, “Knulp”, the theme of the aesthetic tramp, a social parasite who refuses to settle down and whose life is on the road. Knulp is not a regular tramp, but an innocent one, a real son of the biblical Adam, who does not live regretting the lost Paradise, but manages to extend it in the common world, by living each moment as if it were a drop of eternity. “Knulp” is representative for Hesse’s vision of the world, which is an original combination of Western and Eastern conceptions about life.

Don'ts shoot the piano player

Nu trageţi în pianistă

Author(s): Ion Mureşan / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 04/2009

Riria, the Poet

Poeta Riria

Author(s): Al. Cistelecan / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 04/2009

The japanese cultural model

Modelul cultural nipon

Author(s): Dan Ţăranu Vatra / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 04/2009

Art Institutions and Their Transformations

Mākslas institūcijas un to transformācijas

Author(s): Santa Mazika / Language(s): Latvian / Issue: 09/2007

Keywords: art institutions; new institutionalism; institutional critique

The issue of the institutional context in which art is created, explained, exhibited and transformed is often left out of the contemporary art discourse. The content of this article is largely determined by the researcher’s subjective interest in the ambivalent and disputable phenomenon of “new institutionalism”. Leaving aside terminological genealogy and explanation, the term refers to an art institution dealing with contemporary art in the form of flexible cooperation rather than product making. This follows from researches in sociology and economic theory without in-depth examination of these theoretical statements. The author has attempted to follow the chain of causalities, the how and why society has gradually developed such art institutions and what sorts of theoretical positions have fostered this process. An art institution is a medium that transmits, defines, translates, analyses etc. cultural processes. Institutional features are present universally where certain principles are at work. Art institutions include educational and research establishments (art schools, academies, various creative courses, schools, workshops, institutes etc.), public or private communication spaces (galleries, museums, exhibitions, collections, salons, auctions, conferences, seminars, competitions, publications, periodicals, etc.).An art institution is born at the moment it becomes a consistent individual or collective practice. Ever since antiquity Western European cultural institutions have been an integral part of the everyday life of the ruling elite, a reflection and benchmark of lifestyle, knowledge and ideals. The first cultural institutions (private music ensembles, theatre groups, painting collections, libraries, etc.) were created and supported by the aristocracy, representing their privileged culture and education. Artistic phenomena were the brand of a cultured society and everybody aspiring to ascend the social hierarchy had to achieve competence in cultural processes, to know their codes, quotes and references. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Western Europe underwent a series of revolutions followed by political and economic transformations of various degrees of intensity. Rapid industrial development gradually diverted financial resources from the aristocracy to the bourgeoisie but the idea of elitist culture was inherited and maintained. Cultural institutions were financed by so-called patrons or impresarios who were no longer aristocrats but successful entrepreneurs. They strove to uphold the aristocratic system of values reflected in the processes initiated by culture institutions. Institutions were still subjected to a select, small part of society. After World War II a totally opposite tendency emerges – culture institutions begin to receive funding from the taxpayer, not private capital and thus became subject to the needs, taste and ideas of the wider public.
