Summary/Abstract: Ştefan Borbély analyses in his essay dedicated to Herman Hesse’s short story, “Knulp”, the theme of the aesthetic tramp, a social parasite who refuses to settle down and whose life is on the road. Knulp is not a regular tramp, but an innocent one, a real son of the biblical Adam, who does not live regretting the lost Paradise, but manages to extend it in the common world, by living each moment as if it were a drop of eternity. “Knulp” is representative for Hesse’s vision of the world, which is an original combination of Western and Eastern conceptions about life.
