Unknown episodes in the history of the monastery “Saint John the Baptist” in Alba Iulia: World War II period

Episoade necunoscute din trecutul mănăstirii „Sf. Ioan Botezătorul”din Alba Iulia: anii celei de-a doua conflagraţii mondiale

Author(s): Alin Albu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: the monastery “Saint John the Baptist” from Alba Iulia; Transylvania; the Second World War; the Military Bishop Dr. Ioan Stroia; archpriest Alexandru Baba

The study represents the valorization of some new documents referring to the monastery “Saint John the Baptist” in Alba Iulia during the years 1940-1945. Being the only orthodox monastic settlement in the Vicarage of Alba Iulia (a part of the Diocese of Cluj, in Transylvania) at the beginning of World War II, this monastery astonishes through the extremely difficult itinerary it had to follow during the war years. It was an itinerary marked by jurisdictional litigations, caused by the representatives of the Military Diocese settled in Alba Iulia, by almost insurmountable indigence, which made it difficult for the settlement to develop, but also for monks to establish there. In these conditions, perpetuating monastic life in this place and preserving the destination of the foundation of the Military Bishop, Dr. Ioan Stroia, represents in itself a success, the first merits being due to archpriest Alexandru Baba (the monastery fell into his direct jurisdiction within the radius of parish Alba Iulia I Centre). The latter took a special interest in the settlement, defending uncompromisingly the property right of the Vicarage of Alba Iulia/the Diocese of Cluj versus the jurisdiction claims of the Military Diocese – at the risk of declining the relations with the Military Bishop, dr. Partenie Ciopron. He interceded several times with the Minister of Cults in order to budget certain positions and to put the monastery in possession of land, intended to settle a candle factory here (in 1942), and appealed to various administrative authorities so as to protect it from the devastations of the Soviet soldiers (in the autumn of the year 1944). In the end, in a rather difficult undertaking caused by the lack of summarising lists, we drew up a chronological display of the personnel changeover, managing to retrace the integral list of the people living in the monastery during this period.

The maried saints: incentive for marriage as a way to holiness

Verheiratete Heilige: Anregungen zur Ehe als Weg der Heiligkeit

Author(s): Corinna Delkeskamp-Hayes / Language(s): German / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: Marriage; martyrdom; ascetic therapy; confession of Christ; spiritual disunity; the model-function of saints; discipleship; Christian hatred and love

In order to recognize the special dignity of marriage as a path to holiness, Christ's own imposition of a 'hatred' (that also encompasses one's family) as condition for true discipleship must be taken into account. Framing this 'hatred' in terms of a proper way of prioritizing one's obedience to Christ, this essay structures its survey of characteristic lives of married saints along three dimensions of confession, through which such obedience can be realized:Confession to a hostile social environment, to God Himself, and to one's spouse. Thus marriage as a preparation for martyrdom (or confessorship) is distinguished from marriage as a setting for the Divine therapies of asceticism, and from marriage as a space for integrating spouses' love into the Divine love. The conclusion returns to the issue of 'discipleship-hatred' in view of the unfortunately most frequent, situation of spouses' spiritual disunity. Here the seemingly ambiguous model provided by some saintly lives calls for a more precise understanding of Christ's demand. Discipleship is thus interpreted as involving a rejection of, and inner separation from, that worldliness in oneself and one's marriage partner, which resists God's deifying grace. On this basis, the common roots of monastic and marital paths to holiness can be appreciated.

The orders of becoming monachos. Evolution and refomation: historical and liturgical study

Rânduiala Tunderii în Monahism. Evoluţie şi reformă. Studiu istorico-liturgic

Author(s): Monica Grama / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: Monastic Ordinances; Evhologhion; lesser schema; great schema; rasophor monk

Examination of Monastic Ordinances during their appearance, from Dionysius the Areopagite, until today, identifies many features, and of theirs content. The need of introduction in ecclesiastical practice some preliminary Ordinances for the Great Schima, has been expressed before the period of St. Theodore Studite. For this reason, since that time in the monastic practice has been introduced The Ordinance of Little Schima, then called Proschima. Despite the protest of St. Theodore Studite, this ordinance of Little Schima gained more sympathy among the monks and established itself permanently in the monastic ordinances towards the end of the millennium I. The study of documents reveals the instability and a variety of preparatory Ordinances for the Great Schima – Little Schima, Proschima and the Rasofory – about which we have information from the earliest years of their introduction into liturgical-monastic practice. To XIV century, preparatory Ordinances for the Great Schima are getting rich with a new Ordinance for the putting race and the epanokamilavkion, that in the future will have an important role in the history of monastic Ordinances.

Monasticism – a missionary confession through the sanctity of life

Monahismul – o mărturie misionară prin sfinţenia vieţii

Author(s): Mihai Himcinschi / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: monasticism; mission; asceticism; mystic; monk; sanctification; conversion; secularization; deification

In the missionary doctrine of the Church the monasticism is illustrated as the highest and purest form of Christian piety and virtue, but also the most reliable way to heaven. Monasticism is an abnegation of the world in its passionate and corruptible, concupiscent and degrading meaning, in particular of everything that is sinful in it, but above all it is an abnegation of the world’s humanistic system, of its social and purely natural structure, not an abnegation of the world in cosmic and creational meaning. Not the matter in itself, but the attraction towards the lowest is the reason for the evil in the soul; in itself the matter cannot prevent souls from striving for the better. For the Church’s mission to be complete it takes an increase of the quality of the Christian life in an ascetic-mystic rhythm confirmed in the monastic living, having the role model of Christ the Savior.

Monasticism and marriage. An analysis from the perspective of earning the Kingdom of heaven

Monahism şi căsătorie. O analiză din perspectiva dobândirii Împărăţiei cerurilor

Author(s): Florin Botezan / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: monasticism; marriage; Kingdom of heaven; holiness; spiritual life

The Christian life is a life of repentance lived in the perspective of the Kingdom of heaven, a life founded on the faith in the Gospel and on the fulfillment of the commandments of God, summarized in the commandment of love. The Orthodox Church teaching, based on the Bible, is that the advance to the Kingdom of heaven fulfilling the commandment of love revealed by Christ the Savior, can be done in two main ways: marriage and monasticism. The natural way of living of man is the marriage blessed by God at creation and confirmed by Christ. Besides this, the Christian may choose another way, the monastic way, indicated by Christ the Savior, which is the anticipated experience from this world of the eschatological state following the resurrection in the Kingdom of heaven.
