My dear Čapek Letters from Ignát Herrmann to Karel Matěj Čapek Chod Correspondence series

Milý příteli Čapku! Dopisy Ignáta Herrmanna Karlu Matěji Čapkovi Chodovi Edice korespondence

Author(s): Lenka Procházková / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 44/2012

Keywords: correspondence; feuilleton; values and opinions; history of literature; literary document

The correspondence of Ignát Herrmann addressed to Karel Matěj Čapek Chod comprises twenty-nine letters from the period 1895-1927. The letters reflect the relationship of the writers and to some extent their personal lives and scales of values. Many of the letters deal with Čapek’s works and the work of Herrmann himself. Other topics of the correspondence relate to journalism and the editorial activity by which they earned a living. It is evident that in spite of their differences the two writers inspired each other, responded to each other’s writing and suggested topics for each other’s work.

Edvard Valenta and his search for sources of inspiration in art

Edvard Valenta and his search for sources of inspiration in art

Edvard Valenta a jeho hledání cesty k pramenům umění

Author(s): Darina Lukášová / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 44/2012

Keywords: creation of work of art; act of writing; moment of enlightenment; novel; shorthand; autobiographical elements

Between 1957 and 1963 Edvard Valenta wrote the essay K pramenům umění (“To the Sources of Inspiration in Art”). In this never-published essay, deposited in the Literary Archives of the Museum of Czech Literature, he is concerned with the origin of a work of art, especially literature. Though not one of Valenta’s best works, the essay is a valuable source of information – both on Valenta’s approach to art and his writing habits. The study first reproduces the main ideas of Valenta’s reflections on art, before looking for parallels with Valenta’s novels and stories in which characters deal with analogous creative problems, as Valenta does in his essay. Further on, attention is paid to the way in which the political and social situation of the 1950s and beginning of the 1960s affected Valenta’s writing. Valenta, as a journalist, was used to the immediate response of readers, and he needed this response as a novelist as well; indeed, he struggled to write without it. Thus, after 1948, when he was prohibited from writing, he found himself in a very difficult situation. The study examines how Valenta coped with the ban and how he managed to solve plots connected with the usual editorial practice of the 1950s, at a time when he was allowed to publish and when a writer generally had to take into account delays in publishing books, resulting in publication in a political context entirely different from that of when the book was written.

„Možná Ovid jen básnil. Avšak já prozaik mluvím pravdu“ Analýza zápisků pražského estetika Augusta Gottlieba Meißnera (1753–1807) jako rekonstrukce tv

Author(s): Michael Wögerbauer / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 44/2012

Keywords: notebooks; creative practice; university environment; author’s archive; credibility of narrative; historiography; criterion of truth; authenticity

On account of the newly prepared book edition of the notebooks of the writer August Gottlieb Meißner (1753-1807, professor of aesthetics in Prague from 1785 to 1805) this study addresses the problem of the extent to which this “author´s archives” (“avant-texte”), analyzed according to the methods of the French critique génétique, could serve as a source for the reconstructing of the art practice and perhaps the “practical poetics” of the author. The motto cited in the title of the study presents the starting point. In the opening part a source so far unknown is introduced. On the basis of the notes included in it, it is possible to reconstruct at least three filters through which the writing passes from the “avant-texte” to the printed version. The first part of the study (the first filter) analyzes what types of events (either personally experienced or received from various media) the author noted and how he evaluated them by the criterion of credibility. The second filter presented by the author asks which of the written notes could be used as a theme of the narrative and in what way such a theme should be adapted. The third stage (the third filter), through which a small amount of the original material passes, is represented by real re-working and publication in a suitable medium.

Interiorization and exteriorization in the text process

Interiorization and exteriorization in the text process

Zniternění a zvnějšnění v textovém procesu

Author(s): Petr Komenda / Language(s): Czech / Issue: 44/2012

Keywords: text linguistics; artistic process; ontological gesture; structuralism; publication; set of options; intertextual links; communication; thematization

The study Zniternění a zvnějšnění v textovém procesu (“Interiorization and Exteriorization in the Text Process”) is concerned with the boundaries that are given to a subject of research by structuralist methodology. The study refers to a certain one-sidedness with which the structural textological method concentrates the act of publication and exteriorizing aspects of the creative process (the reception approach), resulting in neglect of the production dimension of the creative act. This study supplies both an explanation of the cause of the above-mentioned one-sidedness, referred to in connection with the rise of Mukařovský’s study Záměrnost a nezáměrnost v umění (“Intentionality and Unintentionality in Art”) which has influenced generations of Czech structuralists, and explicates how many researchers have attempted to break away from excessive absorption in the invariant towards the study of variants (M. Červenka) or towards a conception of versions of a work as variations (M. Otruba). The key point of view in the solving of the one-sidedness and re-establishing of an interest not in the sign dimension but in the material dimension of the work of art was presented by the reflections of J. M. Lotman on autocommunication in literature and culture (his book Universe of the Mind). However, it was Zdeněk Mathauser who pointed out the insufficient reflection on the material dimension of the literary work on the part of Czech structuralists.
