The Discourse Analysis of a Newspaper Article

The Discourse Analysis of a Newspaper Article

Author(s): Elena Buja / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2010

Keywords: sentence topic; discourse topic; discourse-as-process; context; reference

This paper is meant as an attempt to show the way in which by analysing the discourse of a newspaper article, we may uncover a certain culture in a specific period of its historical development. In order to do that, I have chosen an article from a Romanian satirical newspaper, Academia Caţavencu, which I found particularly interesting as it poses a number of problems for the analysis. The analysis is based on Widdowson’s (1979) view of discourse-as-process, the focus being on three main aspects, namely the role of context, topic and the representation of discourse content, and the nature of reference in text. Hopefully, by investigating these aspects I could bring further evidence in support of the idea that a text can be regarded as an interaction between the writer and the reader.

Politicization of Prostitution as Social Phenomenon

Politicization of Prostitution as Social Phenomenon

Politizarea fenomenului prostitutiei

Author(s): Elena-Alina Tariceanu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 2/2009

Keywords: Prostitution; politicization; CSW; legal frame; public policy

Prostitution is considered to be a large social phenomenon which has survived all forms of social and political organization and which implies a lot of risks: of public health (infections with STD, HIV/AIDS, B or C hepatitis), drug abuse, criminality, violating human rights, social insurance and health services. Varying with the social and political context in which prostitution was placed, the state adopted different ways of politicizing this phenomenon, from abolishing to legalizing it under specific conditions and recommendations. The main instrument that the state uses in order to politicize the prostitution is the legal frame based on a series of laws and stipulations that place prostitution either in the array of delinquency or of social acceptance

Causes of relative nullity of the Community design

Cauzele relative de nulitate ale desenului comunitar

Author(s): Alina Mihaela Conea / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 03/2011

Keywords: community design; invalidity; OHIM practice; European Court of Justice case law

Relative grounds for invalidity are applicable equally to proceedings before the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market or in the case of the actions in front of the competent national courts. The exhaustive list is established by art. 25(1)(c-g) of Regulation no. 6/2002: the registered holder is not entitled by virtue of a court decision, the Community design is in conflict with a prior national design, the Community design makes unauthorised use of a distinctive sign or is in conflict with protected works in copyright law, the design constitutes an improper use of badges, emblems and escutcheons which are of public interest in a Member State. This material examines the relative causes of nullity in the light of the decisions of OHIM and recent judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union. The examination of the Office practice and the Court of Justice case law revealed both consistent features and differences in interpretation of current laws.

The night time in the medieval Banat

The night time in the medieval Banat

Timpul noptii in Banatul medieval

Author(s): Dragoș Lucian Țigău / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 30/2020

Keywords: Banat; Middle Age; nocturnal; twilight;

History of the night time belongs to the series of complex inquests at the crossing of more “histories”: social, political, and of mentalities, etc. The Banat night time is one of the few or even never studied subjects of this region past times. It is a situation resulting from the Banat early lost of a great part of its archives. As the day time and the night time are in fact the two aspects of life of a person or a community, reconstituting the history of night is totally right. To know them is very an unequal one, in disfavor of the night time. The sources I have at my hand directly present 30 activities about running in night time. Other 10 human preoccupations only mentioned in Dictionarium Valachico-Latinum and Lexicon Marsiglianum (the 17th century) have been added to. The importance of the two pre-modern linguistic monuments increases through the way they registered and translated a considerable number of terms referring to night. They are proves that the human settlements are not always staying in the dark or silently by night. It is only a seeming silence as people work, circulate or enjoy themselves. They are still active and project their next days. A distinct aspect of the subject I present here is the night criminality with an illustrating documentation. Soldiers and any of the ones involved in military events have “white nights” instead. Battles during the night time got also their importance as long as send hundreds of life to the Eternal Night and can change the destiny of many generations. Deciphering the mysteries of night time might contribute therefore to a better acknowledge and understanding of the Banat medieval past times.

THE CIRCULATION OF A MELODIC TYPE OF SCHOLARLY CAROL FROM THE LAND OF THE FORESTERS, HUNEDOARA

THE CIRCULATION OF A MELODIC TYPE OF SCHOLARLY CAROL FROM THE LAND OF THE FORESTERS, HUNEDOARA

THE CIRCULATION OF A MELODIC TYPE OF SCHOLARLY CAROL FROM THE LAND OF THE FORESTERS, HUNEDOARA

Author(s): Alina Lucia Stan / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: Land of the Foresters; Hunedoara; scholarly carol;

The religious carol or with scholarly influence is a musical typological category that is less addressed in the specialized music literature, especially entering the area of interest of religious music. Due to this provenance and a relatively recent evolution in time (only a few hundred years), we find a distinct melodicity compared to the authentic Romanian carol. Melodic variants identified mainly in the Land of the Foresters, Hunedoara, circulate in southern Transylvania on religious carol texts, being collected in the field more than 100 years ago (Bartók, 1913). By the number of variations, we realize that it is a very beloved song, easy to remember, which closes the cycle of the Winter Holidays (Epiphany). The present research aims to identify the melodic variants of this scholarly carol, as well as, most importantly, its spread within other folk genres: old-style songs and dance songs.

CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS IN THE MEDIEVAL BANAT

CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS IN THE MEDIEVAL BANAT

COPII ȘI ADOLESCENȚI ÎN BANATUL MEDIEVAL

Author(s): Dragoș Lucian Țigău / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 32/2022

Keywords: social history; childhood; Banat; Middle Age;

The present study aims to analyze the essential aspects of childhood in the medieval Banat. Archeological, documentary, and linguistic sources were so used to offer samples or even to point out over 60 aspects of the medieval childhood. Details on births dynamics or life expectancy were found out by our analyses. Essential moments of life were so investigated: birth/ christening, engagement/ marriage, and death/ burying, as well as growth and carrying practices, feeding, and maladies and pains, or plays, education and work. Children’s juridical and social status was analyzed too, especially the vulnerable categories: young girls, bastards, and orphans. Children owning and tentative to dispossess theme were also took into consideration. Traumas the children suffered by violence or Ottoman captivity weren’t ignored too. In conclusion, the study shows that childhood existed in the medieval Banat, its natural (biological) status was taken into account, and it was integrated into a particular cultural and social context.

Social (self)isolation: choice or consequence? An analysis among young people with visual impairments

(Auto)izolarea socială: alegere sau consecinţă? O analiză în rândul persoanelor nevăzătoare tinere

Author(s): Alina Cristina Ionescu,Emanuel Adrian Sârbu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 4/2021

Keywords: self-isolation; blind people; integration; disability;

One of the aims on which the construction of the social environment is based is to identify (and implement) the necessary means for the integration of all citizens into its structures. Taking this into consideration, we appreciate the importance to know and explore problematic contexts that make the adaptation process difficult, such as the phenomenon of social self-isolation, and the implications that their installation generates in the current social reality. The need to identify the perception of young blind people about the presence of this phenomenon in the community provides a significant basis in intervention. The correlation between age, social context, support network and self-perception is followed in this study in order to build an image of the main factors that cause this phenomenon to occur in the context of visual disability.
