Anti-Church Legislation of the USSR under the Reign of Vladimir Lenina (1917-1923)

Anti-Church Legislation of the USSR under the Reign of Vladimir Lenina (1917-1923)

Antykościelne ustawodawstwo w ZSRR za rządów Włodzimierza Lenina (1917-1923)

Author(s): Grzegorz Szubtarski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2 (15)/2013

Keywords: situation of the Church in USSR; Russia; Bolshevism; Church and State

The article examines the problem of anti-Church legislation in Russia during the reign of Vladimir Lenin in years 1917 to 1923. Atheistic Marxist ideology regarded religion as the enemy of progress. Therefore, the Bolsheviks took power after his determined fight against the Church, with a view to its total destruction. The first point shows a short period of religious freedom in Russia after the February Revolution. The second section shows how much the situation has changed after the Bolsheviks came to power. They began to pass laws that restrict the activities of the Church in the country. The third point examines a second wave of attacks on the Church in the early twenties, mainly involving the confiscation of church property. All these activities have begun a period of aggressive policy against the Church, which continued for another decades.

Poverty and affluence in Poland in the early 21st century. The assessment of neoliberalism from the perspective of Catholic social teaching

Poverty and affluence in Poland in the early 21st century. The assessment of neoliberalism from the perspective of Catholic social teaching

Ubóstwo i bogactwo w Polsce na początku XXI wieku. Ocena neoliberalizmu z punktu widzenia katolickiej nauki społecznej

Author(s): Stanisław Wójcik / Language(s): / Issue: 1/2014

Keywords: Poverty; affluence; neoliberalism; Catholic social teaching

The theory and practice of modern capitalism results in the moral and intellectual degradation of man, limits his rights, and drives him to poverty, while affluence is accessible only to the few. The fundamental error of the system concerns the omnipotence of the market and free competition. An increasing part of society is driven to passivity. Catholic social teaching promotes a social market economy where both the social state and the people care for the common good.

Ustrój samorządu miejskiego w Radomiu w latach 1915-1939

Ustrój samorządu miejskiego w Radomiu w latach 1915-1939

System municipal government in Radombetween 1915-1939

Author(s): Konrad Słowiński / Language(s): / Issue: 3/2014

Keywords: Samorząd miejski; administracja; Radom; Magistrat; Rada Miejska // Municipal government; administration; Radom; Magistrate; City Council

The purpose of this article is to present the next stages of formation and functioning of local government in the former Polish Kingdom in the years 1915-1939 on the example of the city of Radom. The subject of the research has also show the shape of the political Borough of each term and acting collectively unicipal (Municipal Board) and their internal rules of organization. Municipal government in Radom started to shape up, like the rest of the Polish Kingdom, only during the First World War. The first act fully regulate this issue in the austro-hungarian occupation (under which in 1915, he was Radom) regulation was the Supreme Commander of the Army on 18 August 1916, relating to the ordination of urban Kielce, Lublin, Radom and Piotrkow. After Poland regained independence municipal government existed in the entire country but, depending on the individual districts of the state he was very diverse, both in terms of organizational and systemic. In the area of former Congress former russian legislation slowly began to replace the polish administrative solutions . The result has become the issue by the Chief of State decree of 4 February 1919 on the municipal government, offering the chance to create a modern administrative apparatus in the country. However, the idea of creating a dynamic extension from the municipal government began to slowly break down. Visible has a tendency to limit the autonomy of urban authorities and the role of the social factor in the local administration which resulted in the issuance of the law of 23 March 1933 on the partial change of the system of local government.

Book advertisement in the socio-religious weekly magazine "Wiara" (1906-1909)

Book advertisement in the socio-religious weekly magazine "Wiara" (1906-1909)

Reklama książki na łamach tygodnika społeczno-religijnego „Wiara” (1906-1909)

Author(s): Renata Bednarz-Grzybek / Language(s): / Issue: 101/2014

Keywords: reading culture in the19th and 20th century; reading; socio-religious weekly magazine „Wiara”; upbringing; advertisement

The aim of this article is to present the main titles of the books and pamphlets advertised in "Wiara" (1906-1909), a magazine which appeared in Warsaw. The paper particularly focuses on the publications on education of children and young people, customs, health and economics, drawing attention to the patriotic and moral values, presenting native history and the history of the Catholic Church, pointing to role models included in the lives of saints. The article also mentions books, the aim of which was an entertainment (fiction) . In the era of partitions the issue of particular importance was to provide the proper education for the next generations of the Polish people. They could not attend Polish schools. It was necessary, therefore, to teach them in their family home. They were taught Polish identity, patriotism, respect for others, social solidarity. Developing the reading culture was one of the ways to shape the personality of the young man. Hence the magazine enabled readers to get acquainted with the critical opinions about the latest releases. The authors presented the titles worth reading as well as those books which were of no value.

Legal protection of marriage in the context of gender ideology

Legal protection of marriage in the context of gender ideology

Ochrona prawna małżeństwa w kontekście ideologii gender

Author(s): Ryszard Sztychmiler / Language(s): / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: family; convention; Polish law; canon law; model of marriage; dangers

In the context of an active propaganda of gender ideology, which is smuggled also in the wording of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence out of 11 May 2011, it is reasonable to question: whether in the Polish law, marriage and family are sufficiently protected; whether they are consistently recognized as the basic forms of social life; whether citizens and Christians have a duty to further strengthening the marriage and the family; whether they can promote implementation of solutions present in gender ideology / philosophy. To answer the question, in this article presented an analysis of the following issues: 1) the meaning of marriage and family in the Polish law; 2) characteristics of the gender ideology and its dangers; 3) the position of the Church towards gender ideology; 4) necessity of stronger protection of marriage and family rights. The analysis of these issues leads to the following conclusions: Polish law protects marriage, children and family, but this protection is not fully consistent. Introduction to the legal order of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (11 May 2011) will weaken the position of traditional marriage and the family, and can eliminate their protection, which may lead to changes in the Constitution provisions , which protect marriage and the family. In this situation as justified should be considered following actions: raising public awareness, what is the gender ideology and what want its supporters; promoting knowledge of the rights of spouses, parents and families; assisting spouses in the enjoyment of their rights; participation in the making of laws supporting spouses, parents and families in carrying out their tasks.

Pedagogy of personal autonomous freedom according to Blessed John Paul II in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio

Pedagogy of personal autonomous freedom according to Blessed John Paul II in the light of the encyclical Fides et Ratio

Błogosławionego Jana Pawła II pedagogia osobowej wolności autonomicznej w świetle encykliki Fides et ratio

Author(s): Wojciech Cichosz / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 30/2012

Keywords: autonomous freedom; faith; ideology; pedagogy; person; reason; religion; upbringing; world view

Analysis of the formative contexts of aporetic knowledge

Analysis of the formative contexts of aporetic knowledge

Czynniki kształtujące poznanie aporetyczne

Author(s): Piotr Duchliński / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 13/2015

Keywords: aporetic philosophy; factual contexts; historical context; scientific image of the world; classical philosophy; scientifically oriented philosophy; neo-Thomism; phenomenology; analytical philosophy

This article aims to give an epistemological analysis of the formative contextsof aporetic knowledge. Through an examination of selected philosophicalpositions, three sorts of context are considered: factual ones, historicalones, and those furnished by the scientific image of the world. The scope ofthe article includes viewpoints associated with Thomistic, analytical, and phenomenologicalphilosophy, as well as philosophers operating with referenceto contexts specifically furnished by the sciences. Both Thomists and phenomenologistsmay be said to attach greater significance to factual contexts, with the difference that the latter require these to be purged of all accretionsstemming from scientific theorizing and history. For those conducting philosophywith reference to the contexts furnished by science itself, the priorityis to take full account of the currently reigning scientific image of the world, while in the case of analytical philsophers we encounter a shift from factualcontexts to linguistic ones. The difficulties involved in each case are pointedout, and based on the resulting discussion, it is proposed that when seekingto formulate philosophical aporiae all such contexts should be considered –be they factual, linguistic, historical or scientific. Indeed, it is asserted thatno aporiae can be said to be confined to just one such context, as each has itsfactual, linguistic, historical and scientific dimensions. Aporetic knowledge, moreover, is knowledge conditioned by the choice of a particular paradigmof philosophical understanding, and it is this philosophical paradigm that –in its role as a yardstick for what counts as epistemically successful discernment– decides what we ought to be investigating, and in what manner weshould do so. To discern any such aporia, then, one must first have embracedthe requisite paradigm. Also, we should expect to meet with the situationsthat generate philosophically interesting problems precisely at those pointswhere different fields of knowledge (be they natural-scientific, humanistic,social-scientific, or literary) intersect. This, though, in turn demands a highlevel of interdisciplinary cooperation between various knowledge-related disciplines,as only then can we hope to arrive at the multi-aspected overview ofaporiae needed if these are to be elucidated at a deeper level. Aporetic knowledge,it is concluded, is dialogical knowledge, whose epistemic-cognitivevalue is moulded in the fire of critical discussions that necessarily involve differentparadigms – paradigms in competition with one another as regards thevalidity of their truth claims.

The specification of tenements and revitalization of the Major Lublin in 1738

The specification of tenements and revitalization of the Major Lublin in 1738

Specyfikacja kamienic i moderacja pogłównego Lublina z 1738 r.

Author(s): Michał Wójciuk / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 6/2014

Keywords: Lublin; XVIII c.; Poland

The article is an edition of specifications of tenements in Lublin (the city inside walls and Krakowskie Przedmieście) complied by the city office in 1738 for tax reasons. The materials presented encompass: the specification of tenements on 3 November 1738, as well as a revitalization of the Old Town on 29 April 1738 and 18 August 1738, and the revitalization of Krakowskie Przedmieście on 20 August 1738. All censuses are kept in a book number 295, which can be found in the State Archive of Lublin. The material presented is the entire list of tenements and other city properties built in Poland in the Saxon period and preserved until today. It is an interesting source of knowledge, crucial for getting to know the Old Polish Lublin, the topography of the city, as well as its social specification. Registries list the owners of particular real estates as well as their residents, show the localization of tenement houses belonging to the clergy (both diocesan and monastic), magnates, nobility, and middle class (patriciate and common people), and the localization of other buildings such as: schools, hospitals, inns, taverns, and business places. This source could be also used in onomastic studies, whether of an anthroponymic or toponymic character, as well as in genealogical studies. The material could be also useful for sociotopographical reconstructions. They are a repository of names and nicknames of the Lublin members of the middle class or real estate owners, the names of streets and squares. Among the owners and residents of tenements one could find very important names (members of the magnates holding the post of a dignitary or senator), representatives of the middle nobility, some influential people in Lublin working in the civil councils, as well as craftsmen, traders, and peddlers. It is also a source of information about the ethnic minorities living in the Lublin of that time, e.g. of a Jewish, German, Armenian, Italian, or French origin.

The Territorial Government Auditing Union in Interwar Poland

Związek Rewizyjny Samorządu Terytorialnego w Polsce międzywojennej

Author(s): Andrzej Witkowski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2015

Keywords: Territorial Government Auditing Union; Second Polish Republic; selfgovernment unions

On 24 Oct. 1934 the President of Poland issued an ordinance concerning the Territorial Government Auditing Union (Związek Rewizyjny Samorządu Terytorialnego – ZRST). It was assumed that reasonable control would make it possible to prevent wasteful and ineffective economic undertakings of local governments. The Union’s operations were supervised by the Minister of Internal Affairs. ZRST was responsible for inspecting financial and economic operations of local governments, as well as municipal plants, enterprises, institutions and companies in terms of their formal compliance and usefulness (in particular from the viewpoint of cost-effectiveness required from the public economy sector). In connection with its surveillance duties ZRST carried out large-scale activities focusing on providing instruction, advice and guidance related to the financial and economic operation of local governments.

HUMAN SUBJECTIVITY IN THE LIGHT OF CHRISTIAN PERSONALISM

PODMIOTOWOŚĆ CZŁOWIEKA W ŚWIETLE PERSONALIZMU CHRZEŚCIJAŃSKIEGO

Author(s): Renata Kucharska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: subjectivity; person; God; encounter; enthusiasm; presence; love; personalism; Christianity

The article discusses human subjectivity from the perspective of Christian personalism. There are three complementary respects in which human subjectivity is examined: (1) its main source which is God, (2) its place of actualization which is the encounter of persons, and (3) its way of implementation which is the love of persons. Integrally understood, human subjectivity appears as a key parameter which facilitates properly shaping the individual development and social relationships of persons.

Multiculturalism – outside of civilization?

Multiculturalism – outside of civilization?

Multikulturalizm: poza cywilizacją?

Author(s): Piotr Jaroszyński / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 24/2014

Keywords: multiculturalism; civilization; identity; person; Latin civilization

Multiculturalism appears as an ideology which is not only outside of civilization, but also against civilization. Therefore it cannot be pushed forward in the process of building and developing societies, especially those societies which grew up on the basis of a particular civilization and their culture – by being instilled in their own civilization – reached a high level of development and their own identity. Only the Latin civilization provides a platform for the dialogue and coexistence of different cultures due to the fact that only in the Latin civilization it is possible to go beyond civilization to recognize the person in the man and in truth, good and beauty the transcendental properties which appertain to the being.

Ideologies of multiculturalism and the destruction of Western politics

Ideologies of multiculturalism and the destruction of Western politics

Ideologie wielokulturowości a destrukcja polityki Zachodu

Author(s): Paweł Skrzydlewski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 24/2014

Keywords: multiculturalism; politics; family; justice; work; religion

The author analyzes four key factors of the state built upon principles of the Latin civilization; these factors include morality (the uprightness of citizens), science, production and army. He accentuates that all the actions based on revolutionary methods and assumptions must be removed from the social life of Europe and Poland because of their harmfulness and dangerous practices. Politics, when realized according to the above-selected principles, allows recovering and strengthening the pillars of Western culture. These pillars include: A) Family based on the undissolvable and unsolicited marriage of a man and a woman, which fosters love between them and for all the others, which enables the actual equality of a man and a woman in their rights and duties, which founds private property and the opportunity of getting matured during the lifetime of parents. B) The administration of justice in all areas of human life through the public authority which while giving back what is due to each other contributes in establishing a genuine interpersonal peace along with its various fruits. C) The respect for human work which enables an essential development of any human goods, as well as the eradication of any form of slavery. D) The independence of religious life from political and temporal factors, which ultimately serves the priority of the human spirit over all the finite and the means for human life.

University and totalitarian systems

University and totalitarian systems

Uniwersytet a totalitaryzmy

Author(s): Piotr Jaroszyński / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 25/2015

Keywords: John Paul II; university; philosophy; civilisation; totalitarian system; mythology; religion; ideology; science

Totalitarian system roots deeper than the human flaws, which manifests itself in the desire to own or dominate. At the foundation of any totalitarian system there is some image of a human being, which makes it possible or impossible to take possession of her or him. The above mentioned image may be derived from mythology, religion, ideology or science. It emerges not merely in military circles, among those longing for combat, nor among the profit-craving bankers, since it may also emerge at universities, among scholars who lacking awareness in terms of methodology and being ignorant of limitations to every domain of science attempt to reduce the concepts of a human being to the level of impersonal being. As a consequence, they facilitate it for the totalitarian system to successfully promote the anti-human civilisation all over the world. Further to the above, the considerations on totalitarian system also have to take into account science and university circles. That idea was also presented in the numerous speeches of John Paul II, who addressing the scientific circles warned them against totalitarian system which may take possession of university circles and scholars.

Religion in the life of a human being and totalitarian governance of social life

Religion in the life of a human being and totalitarian governance of social life

Religia w życiu osoby ludzkiej a totalitarny ład życia społecznego

Author(s): Paweł Skrzydlewski / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 25/2015

Keywords: totalitarianism; social life; religion; human being; metaphysics; Western civilisation

The aim of this article is to answer the question: why totalitarianism, as a form of statehood, a particular form of social governance fights against religion and human religiosity. In other words, the author of the article tries to explain the anti-religious nature of totalitarianism. This outstanding issue is intended to be presented on the basis of philosophical knowledge referring to the personalistic vision of man and realist metaphysics. The presentation of the issue will be juxtaposed with indication of the relation between religion of human life and social governance, shaped in the context of Western civilisation. The author emphasises that religion makes it possible for a human being to exercise her or his transcendence in contrast to the whole world, and her or his freedom from the world, from its finiteness and insufficiency. Thanks to religion, a human being has the chance to discover her or his dignity, i.e. her or his personal exceptional goodness, constituting the basis for all human entitlements. Thanks to religion, there is hope in the human heart that gives strength to overcome any difficulties, obstacles to fight for what rightly belongs to this person and for what rightfully belongs to others. The lack of religion in human life means the lack of foundation for the discovery of her or his identity, destiny, inborn dignity and freedom; its lack means also the inability to understand and perceive oneself in a mature way.

Media and totalitarianism in the teaching of John Paul II

Media a totalitaryzm w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II

Author(s): Zdzisław Klafka / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 25/2015

Keywords: totalitarianism; mass-media; truth; John Paul II

The article shows that the pontificate of the Pope who was a Slav became a great symbol for the world. As a witness of two totalitarian systems, he showed that any programmatic assault on the basis of morality is a form of totalitarianism thinly disguised under the mask of democracy. John Paul II underscored that following the harmful principle, “think and act as if God does not exist,” is especially present in mass-media. Therefore, there is a great responsibility of media people not to manipulate the truth, because the negation of truths about God, man and society is a source of totalitarianism in all its forms. In his article, the author indicates remedial measures which protect the society against totalitarianism.

The myth about Antaeus from the perspective of Poland’s vicissitudes

The myth about Antaeus from the perspective of Poland’s vicissitudes

Mit o Anteuszu z perspektywy polskich losów

Author(s): Piotr Jaroszyński / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 25/2015

Keywords: Greek myths; Antaeus; land; vicissitudes; Poland; culture; civilisation; history

The author points out that the Greek myths still possess not only artistic charm but also have timely message. One such myth is the particularly moving myth about Antaeus. The reason is that it illustrates the importance of land as a source of strength. And since the vicissitudes of Poland include the fight for land, therefore the author focused on showing the sense, in which the old Greek myth may be associated with the Polish fate. The author concludes his divagations stating that owning land lies at the heart of the Latin civilisation as well as the values and ideals found in it. The author emphasises that the possession of land by the Poles is of pivotal significance not only from the point of view of economy or emotionality but, above all, taking into account the development of civilisation. Further to the above, in our history it has always been crucial to own land.

Author(s): Wacław Grzybowski / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

Keywords: Poetry; art; Christology; contemplation; being

The article “Thomas MacGreevy's 'Gloria de Carlos V.' In-between Poetry and Art” presents an interpenetration of a poem by an Irish modernist poet, Thomas MacGreevy, entitled “Gloria de Carlos V” written around 1924 after the poet's visit to the Prado gallery in Madrid. My interpenetration focuses on the intersection of the poet's fascination with visual arts, religion and poetry itself. The main thesis of my article is that this intersection offers a unique insight into the poetic knowing of being.
