Introduction: Possibilities of Embodiment

Introduction: Possibilities of Embodiment

Author(s): Elizabeth A. Behnke,Cristian Ciocan / Language(s): English / Issue: 12/2012

The phenomenological tradition has been addressing the theme of embodiment from the very beginning. Indeed, Husserl was already describing the kinaesthetics of vision even before the Logische Untersuchungen appeared (see Husserliana XXII, pp. 275ff . and 416–19, for texts from around 1893 and 1894). His lifelong investigations of the structures of embodied experience tended to gravitate around two main poles: on the one hand, the necessary role of embodiment in the constitution of our practical/perceptual world, and on the other hand, the necessary implication of embodiment in the experience of others. His chief findings in the former context are well known, focusing on the body as the central here or “null-point” (Nullpunkt) around which the practical/perceptual world is oriented; the kinaesthetic capability (“I-can”) through which I am able to “govern” (walten) my own movement in unparalleled immediacy; and the body as organ of perception, not only in terms of the various sensory fields through which I can experience both my own body and other items in the world (for example, I can see, hear, or touch myself as well as other things), but also in terms of the unique somaesthetic sensations (Empfindnisse) through which one and only one phenomenon is given: namely, my own lived body, uniquely felt as mine. All this, however, also comes into play in the second major context of Husserl’s work on embodiment, for when I see the physical body (Körper) of another, I do not see a merely physical body, but a lived body (Leib) that stands at the center of its own lived world, that is capable of self-movement, and that is uniquely felt as “mine” by the person concerned. For Husserl, then, my own body participates in a “bodily intersubjectivity” (Husserliana IV, p. 297) arising in a pre-reflective “coupling” (Paarung) between the body I live directly and the other embodied lives with whom I share the world.

Cultural perspectives on leadership

Cultural perspectives on leadership

Author(s): Margareta Petrut / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2011

Keywords: culture; leadership; China; change; influence

Research has demonstrated that national culture influences management philosophy and practice. While examining existing literature, it becomes clear that, for decades, most contributions in this field have reflected the European and North American viewpoint. However, for anyone interested in a more balanced view, an insight into Eastern perspectives on such influences is necessary. Also a more systematic effort is needed to bridge the gap between cultures. This paper is meant to provide a brief introduction to cultural differences between the East and the West regarding leadership, as they are perceived from an Eastern perspective.

Analysis and performance. Views on the performers musical awareness

Author(s): Anca Preda-Uliţă / Language(s): / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: analysis; performance; musical awareness

The analysis as a tool to be used by performers for a deeper understanding of the works represents more than an abstract explanation of a musical work, being able to form an integral part of one's interpretation, whether as performer, writer, or teacher. It also represents the most useful way of exploration and innovation of musical interpretations. Performers who use music analysis efficiently will find it a valuable method for finding the kind of musical richness they desire in their interpretations. The use of analysis in performance offers a rational basis and a unique way of interpreting music in performance.

Discourse of “Transgender” Identities: Aspects of Gender Performativity in the Movie ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’

Discourse of “Transgender” Identities: Aspects of Gender Performativity in the Movie ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’

„Transgender“ Tapatybių Diskursas: Lyties Performatyvumo Aspektai Kino Filme „Priscilos, Dykumos Karalienės, Nuotykiai“

Author(s): Gintarė Narauskaitė / Language(s): Lithuanian / Issue: 86/2016

Keywords: gender performativity; camp; transgender; drag queens; transwoman; naturalization;

The film ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ presents performances of drag queens, their lives are presented in a natural context, which is why appropriation of femininity implemented by transgender subjects, coexistence of masculinity and femininity in the same body and inversion of norms of sexuality create a parody and campy methods of action turn into a subversive paradigm. Moreover, this article notes that if drag queens (Felicia, Mitzi, trans woman (a male-to-female transgender person) Bernadette) denaturalise the perception of femininity by performances of hyperbolised femininity, a transsexual woman Bernadette maintains naturalisation by materializing norms of femininity (affection, decency, serenity, condescension, mindfulness for outer beauty and elegant feminine representation) by her non-stage performativity of gender. However, by applying these stereotypes to a person who was assigned male at birth, Bernadette highlights changeability, instability and constructivism of gender, meaning that sexuality is created and implemented through performative practice despite of assignation at birth or anatomical nature.

COMPARISON OF TWO TIBETAN COMPENDIUMS ON BUDDHIST COSMOLOGY DATING FROM THE 13TH AND 19TH CENTURIES

COMPARISON OF TWO TIBETAN COMPENDIUMS ON BUDDHIST COSMOLOGY DATING FROM THE 13TH AND 19TH CENTURIES

Author(s): Alexa Péter / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2016

Keywords: ’Phags-pa lama; Kun-dga’ Chos-legs; Buddhist cosmology; cosmogony and antropogony of the abhidharma-system;

This paper examines two Tibetan sources to show how Tibetan masters could introduce people of totally different cultural background into Buddhist doctrines. The Explanation of the Knowable (Tib. Shes-bya rab-tu gsal-ba) was written by ’Phags-pa lama, while the Answers to the Questions of Sken-dha from Europe (Tib. Rgya-gar rum-yul-pa Sken-dhas dris-lan) is the compendium of Kun-dga’ Chos-legs. Both analyse the same subject: cosmology as part of the basic doctrines, and both have the same aim: initiating foreigners into Buddhist precepts. Thus we can observe the similarity of the two works and the teaching methods used by the masters who followed different traditions at different times.

Buddhism and the transformation to sustainable economies

Author(s): Peter Daniels / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2007

Keywords: sustainability; environment; economy; Buddhism;

A major premise of this paper is that Buddhism provides a logic and means to help resolve this tension between in-grained economic system imperatives and the changes actually required for achieving environmental sustainability. In this simple depiction, we examine the logic inherent within Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths, and the means proffered in the Eightfold Path, and extend upon these basic ideas with knowledge and experience available from 21 st century environmental science, economics and technology fields. The ultimate goal is to illustrate how this ancient wisdom can help inform and facilitate the successful transformation to sustainable human economies.

Phenomenology of Body and Body Psychotherapies

Phenomenology of Body and Body Psychotherapies

Fenomenologija tijela i tjelesne psihoterapije

Author(s): Izabela Huber / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 03/147/2017

Keywords: phenomenology; body; body psychotherapies; Hermann Schmitz; Friedrich Nietzsche; Ludwig Klages;

After Nietzsche and Klages prepared a ground for the body to become the subject of philosophical investigations understood differently than within the Cartesian system or natural sciences, Schmitz developed the first systematic phenomenological approach to it. Schmitz takes the subject up from the radical and consistent phenomenological definition of body (Leib in contrast to Körper), and devises theoretical framework and vocabulary which enables talking about an entire span of states experienced through body. In psychotherapy, body was thematised firstly in early body psychotherapies that had their root in psychoanalysis (Reich, Lowen, Kelley). In these, the understanding of body as phyisical body (Körper) is predominant. Purely phenomenological approach to body in psychotherapy (in the sense of Schmitz’s Leib) was developed by Gendlin. Contemporary body-oriented psychotherapies (Levine, Ogdne, van der Kolk) were most notably developed in posttraumatic syndrome therapies, and they integrate phenomenological research on body with cognitive-narrative approaches and new neurobiological discoveries. Each in its own way, both the phenomenology of body and body psychotherapies attempt to balance the hypertrophy of rational, cognitive and spiritual within the culture, shifting the focus to the field of corporeality, on the intangible, fluid, almost ineffable parts of experience, for centuries marginalized in philosophy and science despite the fact that they play an important role in life-world (Lebenswelt).

Measuring self-hood according to self-determination theory: Construction and validation of the Ego Functioning Questionnaire (EFQ)

Measuring self-hood according to self-determination theory: Construction and validation of the Ego Functioning Questionnaire (EFQ)

Author(s): Nebojša Majstorović,Lisa Legault,Isabelle Green-Demers / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2008

Keywords: Self; Ego Functioning Questionnaire; Self-Determination Theory; Scale Validation;

The goal of this research was to develop and validate an instrument designed to measure the three types of self proposed by Hodgins and Knee (2002): integrated, ego-invested, and impersonal. This measure was termed The Ego Functioning Questionnaire (EFQ). In Study 1 (N=202), the factorial structure of the EFQ was examined by means of an exploratory factor analysis, and the metric properties of its subscales were documented. In Study 2 (N=300), the 3 factor structure of the EFQ was successfully corroborated using a confirmatory factor analysis. In Study 3 (N=131), associations between the EFQ and a variety of cognitive, affective, and social variables were found to display meaningful patterns, thereby providing support for the EFQ’s construct validity. Also, the EFQ was not susceptible to socially desirable responding. Results are discussed in terms of their fundamental and applied implications.

IMPACT OF THE NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION INTERVENTION PROGRAM ON THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF THE PARTICIPANTS: OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEMIC RESEARCH ANALYSIS

IMPACT OF THE NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION INTERVENTION PROGRAM ON THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF THE PARTICIPANTS: OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEMIC RESEARCH ANALYSIS

NESMURTINIO BENDRAVIMO INTERVENCINĖS PROGRAMOS POVEIKIS PROGRAMOS DALYVIŲ SOCIALINEI ELGSENAI: SISTEMINĖS TYRIMŲ ANALIZĖS APŽVALGA

Author(s): Eglė Visakavičiūtė,Rita Bandzevičienė / Language(s): Lithuanian / Issue: 1/2019

Keywords: social behavior; empathy quotient; nonviolent communication; effectiveness of the NVC program;

The Nonviolent Communication interventional program (NVC), of which a prototype developer is an american psychologist and mediator of conflicts M. Rosenberg (2005), has been applied to improve social behavior, interpersonal and social relationships, conflict resolution and prevention from violence. The aim of this work is to systematically analyze empirical studies, which have evaluated the impact of the NVC program on the social behavior of its participants. Computerized bibliographic databases EBSCOhost, Scopus, Sage, Taylor & Francis were used to search for scientific publications. Systematic analysis selection includes peer-reviewed articles on the impact of the NVC intervention program, published until 13th of July of 2018. In order to answer the questions of systemic analysis, the survey includes various types of research that meet three criteria: 1) the interventional NVC method was used in the studies, 2) the evaluation of the constructs was made before and after the intervention, 3) the results in the qualitative studies were followed by the results after the applied intervention. The main questions of systematic analysis are: 1) What social behavior constructs are explored when assessing the impact of the NVC interventional program? 2) Is the NVC interventional program an effective tool for changing the various social behavior constructs of the participants? In addition, the aim was to assess the limitations and opportunities of research on the effectiveness of the NVC interventional program.An overview of the research has shown that participants‘ abilities of empathy, expression of negative emotions, ability to cope with stress, awareness and relationship-enhancing communication in conflict situations has been investigated most often while using the NVC interventional program. Individual research identified individuals‘ participation in conflicts, risk of crime (of recidivists), marital satisfaction, and the ability to transfer nonviolent communication skills to personal life. The research methodology is differing, the authors refer to the main principles of the NVC program, but it is modeled depending on the circumstances (age of the participants, situation of life, circumstances of the research, etc.). In most cases (75%), significant, positive changes in the above constructs were identified, assessed at both individual and group levels.Summarizing the results of this systematic review it can be assumed that the NVC interventional program can be an effective tool for changing the patterns of social behavior of individuals and groups, as it enhances the communicative empathy, sensitivity to one’s and other needs and experiences, develops the ability to verbalise, empathetically deal with stress and conflicts. However, a small number of studies and methodological limitations encourage the continuation of research on the effectiveness of the NVC interventional program, taking into account the possible impact of the situational factors that may affect both the elements of the program and the characteristics of the participants on its effectiveness.

Author(s): Renata Dopierała / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 4/2017

Keywords: minimalism; voluntary simplicity; post-materialist values; social movements

This article discusses minimalism and slow life as examples of anti-consumer-oriented social practices. The author presents the assumptions of minimalism and slow life (their similarities and differences), compares minimalism with the idea of voluntary simplicity (comparing mainly their systems of values), describes minimalism as a project of the self, and distinguishes a few variants—radical, economic, and luxury minimalism. The analysis is based on minimalist literature.

On Formal and Informal Factors: Enabling Learning for Safe Offshore Drilling Operations

On Formal and Informal Factors: Enabling Learning for Safe Offshore Drilling Operations

Author(s): Trygve J. Steiro,Astrid Thevik,Eirik Albrechtsen / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2017

Keywords: Communication; organizational learning; management; offshore drilling; formal structure; informal structure;

Traditional safety thinking has been concerned with investigating accident causations in order to learn from these. However, successful operations constitute the great majority of all the operations. It would thus be interesting to add a focus towards learning from operations that go well. The purpose of the current study is to identify factors that might contribute to successful operations in terms of safety. This purpose is approached by an empirical study consisting of 10 interviews with people who work on board a drilling rig currently operating in Norway. The informants who participated in the interviews hold different positions and come from different companies represented on board the rig. The findings in this study show that it can be difficult to characterize or define successful operations. The definition will be subjective; however, there are some common features of successful operations. Maintaining the life and health of people are the number one priority. A successful operation should also result in the intended product even though it might take some more time than planned. A successful operation is created by many factors and conditions. This study identified 27 factors that might contribute to successful operations in terms of safety. A lot of the theory explaining successful operations focuses on informal factors related to humans and their actions. However, the findings in this study implies that there must be both formal and informal factors present.

INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN THEIR SELF-DEVELOPMENT PROCESS: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Author(s): Ofra Kirschenboim / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Keywords: personal and emotional growth; self-development; intervention; self-awareness;

Nowadays, we see people who have difficulty in speaking about themselves. They found it easier to talk about others and to blame and attack them. This leads to negative energies, lack of confidence and unhappiness. Pressure, stress or anxiety can be the trigger for personal growth and development. In recent years, an attempt has been made to combine research into personality, research on mutual social action, and research into society. The need for critical self-awareness and for active, selective learning, are the factors behind the desire to combine these research areas. There are approaches that claim that interaction between individuals is the social basis. This is a micro paradigm, which states that the individual has an influence on the society. Following the literature, this paper aims to understand the self-development process, as an argument for developing a method for personal and emotional growth. Thus, the model will be developed to help people deal with crises and difficulties caused by external factors, beyond the control of the patient.

REGULATION DIFFICULTY IN CYBERBULLYING INCIDENTS

REGULATION DIFFICULTY IN CYBERBULLYING INCIDENTS

Author(s): Dana Rad / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Keywords: cyberbullying; emotional regulation difficulties; helping attitudes; curvilinear relationship;

Emotional regulation refers to our emotional response to a particular situation. It is defined as the deliberate or automatic attempt of a person to influence what emotions to have, when and how to have them and how to express them.To tackle the relationship between helping attitudes and emotional regulation scale in cyberbullying incidents, our project Hate’s Journey, financed by Erasmus+, 2018-2-ES02-KA205-011733 has designed an online questionnaire composed by some single item research questions, general data collection and tests regarding emotional regulation, internet content awareness and helping attitudes. The hypothesis of this research is that between helping attitudes and emotional regulation scale in cyberbullying incidents there is a curvilinear effect. Research’s 206 participants are residents of Latvia in 24.8%, Romania 24.8%, Spain 24.8%, and Turkey 25.7%, 39.8% males and 60.2% females, age mean of m=30 years. In order to test our curvilinear hypothesis, we have used SPSS’ multiple linear regression analysis, based on multiple regression analysis for curvilinear effects, where helping attitudes scale was the dependent variable for the independent variables emotional regulation. As results show in Model 1 the model that supposes linear relationship, emotional regulation difficulty accounts for 7% of the variance in helping attitudes with an F=16.699 significant at a p<.01. In Model 2, the model that supposes curvilinear relationship, emotional regulation difficulty accounts for 13% of the variance in helping attitudes with an 16.323 significant at a p<.01.Results show that a very highlevel of emotional regulation difficulties and a very low level of emotional regulation difficulties play an important role in the process ofhelping attitudes display, acting like a buffering effect. Conclusions on further testing of a moderated mediation effect and implications are discussed.

THE NATURE AND MEANS OF REALIZING TRUTH – THE GANDHIAN PERSPECTIVE

Author(s): Joseph Nkang Ogar,Thomas Eneji Ogar / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2019

Keywords: Truth; Gandhi; Eternal Principle;

The article in three parts is an attempt at an exposition of the nature and means of realizing truth from the Gandhian perspective. Part one deals with the Gandhian conception of Truth as God, the Eternal Principle that includes the principles of conduct like brahmacarya, celibacy, and truth in thought, word and deed. Part two comprises the exposition of brahmacarya, anāsaktiyoga and satyāgraha adopted by Gandhi as the important means of realizing the Truth. And in part three it is pointed out that in spite of his relentless search after the Truth, what Gandhi could have were only its fleeting glimpses. In conclusion, it is held that Gandhi could not have the full glimpse of the Truth probably because the means he followed were not only inadequate and preliminary, but also misplaced.
