The existing concepts in the stylistic tradition perceive style, inter alia, as an ornament, a deviation from a standard, a rule of choice, an expression of personality. At present the prevailing conviction is that style is a text feature, a complex feature, the highest integrative rule, comprising other features (from cohesion and coherence to genre and discursiveness).

Czech so called „bestseller literature” is represented in Polish readers’ enviroment by translations of Michal Viewegh’s, Irena Obermannová’s and Halina Pawlowská’s books. These authors are celebrities in Czech Republic, their activity (both as writers and TV programms’ moderators) evokes distinct cultural connotation. Their books are extremally popular and best selling on domestic market. But in Poland all these authors are slightly known. We can find reasons of such situation in many levels: in a lack of marketing actions accompanying their books on Polish market, lack of information about these authors, in an existence of pattern of Czech culture and literature in Polish readers’ consiousness that approves high artistic literature and depreciates bestseller literature.

The aim of this text is a describition of ekphrasis in comrecial text. The papier consists of three parts. The first part is a presentation of theory of literature way of defining ekphrasis by M. Czermińska, M.P. Markowski, A. Dziadek and S. Wysłouch. The second part is about defining of ekprasis as a genre by B. Witosz. The last part of the text is a description of ekprasis in commercial text. The research results were illustrated by many examples derived from travel agency catalogues.

The attitude of Polish travellers toward non-European cultures is part of our cultural self-consciousness. Accounts of exotic journeys bring about important confrontations with the categories of dominance and subordination, which, even when carried out in some remote parts of the globe, are always realised with remembering of what has remained in Europe. Taking as examples her analysis of selected fragments of such narratives (e.g. B. Malinowski, R. Kapuściński, F. Goetel, H. Sienkiewicz, I. Karpowicz, O. Stanisławska), the author argues that their attentive interpretation may provide a room for afterthought on the opportunities and limitations of use of postcolonial criticism categories.

The author considers the status of the canon of Holocaust literary studies. Based on Jan and Aleida Assmanns’ well known thesis he proposes to consider this kind of writing as an Encyclopedia – a cumulative reading list of literary studies works considered canonical, and, on the other hand, as a Method, i.e. a model mechanism of creating an analysis and exegesis of the Holocaust writing. The author concludes that despite numerous attempts there is a dominance of canons which fall within the sphere of the first category whereas the second one still awaits fruition. According to the author, a crucial element of the latter would be to define the specific relation between a scholar and the object of his or her research as a particular feature of Holocaust literature and its theory.

The aim of the article is to give insight into reading comprehension and the role of prior knowledge in reading literary texts in Spanish as a foreign language. In order to achieve this, the author conducted a survey to investigate understanding and inferencing in understanding of the culturally marked text elements in three literary texts fragments. The subjects were students of the first and the second year of Spanish language and literature. The results indicate that it requires both linguistic and cultural knowledge to establish adequate comprehension and that the knowledge of the language cannot compensate for insufficient knowledge of the world.Celem artykułu było przeanalizowanie znaczenia rozumienia i posiadanej wiedzy w czytaniu tekstów literackich w języku hiszpańskim jako obcym. Przeprowadzono badanie dotyczące rozumienia i wnioskowania w rozumieniu nacechowanych kulturowo elementów tekstowych we fragmentach trzech tekstów literackich. Badani byli studenci pierwszego i drugiego roku studiów języka i literatury hiszpańskiej. Wnioski wskazują, że odpowiednie rozumienie tekstu zależy od wiedzy językowej i kulturowej oraz że znajomość kodu językowego nie kompensuje braku wiedzy o świecie.

Bartosz Janiszewski’s Grzesiuk: Król życia [Grzesiuk: King of Life, 2017] is the first book-length biography of Stanisław Grzesiuk (1918-1963), a Polish writer and singer who became famous for reviving the singing style and dialect of prewar Warsaw. An uncensored edition of Grzesiuk’s three autobiographical novels was published in 2018. Darska explores in what ways Janiszewski draws on Grzesiuk’s own writing. She focuses on the counter-intuitive hierarchy of genres and discusses the significance of reading Grzesiuk’s story today, when he is much less widely known than one or two generations back. The recent publication of his trilogy and the biography might reinstall the life and work of “the bard of the Polish capital” in collective memory and, besides the popularising aspect, return Grzesiuk to his rightful place in the literary canon.

The aim of the article is to open up a discussion of Justin Quinn’s book Between Two Fires: Transnationalism and Cold War Poetry. The monograph focuses on transnational movements of poetry between Czech culture and the Anglophone world during the Cold War. The book allows us to reconsider the way in which we study similar transfers of Polish literature and the categories and models we use to describe them, which usually stem from translation studies, studies of reception of Polish literature abroad, and recent debates on world literature.

This article is devoted to selected aspects of digital humanities in Poland, especially academic communication and linguistic metalanguage. Considerations in this respect have so far focused primarily on topics related to the use of digital tools in humanities research rather than those concerning the ontological status of this research field. This paper presents the impact of issues associated with digital humanities on language and communication space. The study focuses on how linguistic and communicative reality changes in contact with what is classified as digital humanities. The discussion considers word-formation, lexical and semantic phenomena in linguistic terminology, using material from the iSybislaw digital bibliography and other sources.

The essay Malinowski’s „A Diary in the strict sense of the term” and Eliade’s “The Indian Journal”: a comparative study deals with a comparison of two journals, written by the famous Polish-British ethnographer and the Romanian philosopher of religion. The study covers mainly two domains: construction of both texts, and cultural identity of their authors. Malinowski’s and Eliade’s journals are heterogenous texts, they are scientific notes and spiritual confessions at the same time and use many literary devices and novelistic conventions. Both authors are cultural hybrids, they are not able to identify completely neither with the dominating, white and European community, nor with the groups dominated politically and culturally, respectively the Triobraind Islanders and the Hindu people. According to the author, this fact is due to their Central-European origin, because both Polish and Romanian nations are situated in-between the West and the East and experienced a long political and cultural domination.

The paper discusses two twentieth-century theoretical-literary concepts regarding broadly understood versology, pioneering expressions of new way of thinking of versification based on enjambment (i.e., the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza) rather than on meter. By investigating the role of enjambment according to Giorgio Agamben and Adam Kulawik, the paper refers to transformations that have taken place in perceiving this prosodic phenomenon over the past decades, i.e., how verse has changed by transitioning to non-numerical (so-called free) composition from meter and equivalence.

This article discusses Jan Józef Lipski’s essay Dwie ojczyzny, dwa patriotyzmy [Two Homelands, Two Patriotisms] as a matrix of patriotism. The main question is: will the homeland designed by Lipski accommodate illegitimate identities (woman, gay, peasant) that can be described as “subordinated familiars” (or “internal strangers”)? Czapliński concludes by asking whether we still need the “homeland” today.
