The item insistently evoked each time it has been needed to show the common background of the communities which populate the European geographic area has always been culture. Although history has proven that this part of the world is the most affected by conflict and that the technical progress it has generated has developed along with the amplitude of conflicts, the Europeans have always tried to show what unites them, and to consolidate their identity forged in the wars generated by the proclamation of differences. For the EU, the cultural issue is not only a topic of debate for the elite, but it has also become a regulated field subject to a certain policy, which reflects the desire to impose a European cultural identity but is also accompanied by caution in what regards the management of the cultural diversity of European peoples.

This article focuses on translation problems, which occur having to translate cultural realia denoting lexical units. The paper also analyses the significance of preservation of national culture and identity in translation having in mind European cultural context and its implications. Besides, some classification schemes of cultural realia are presented. The work includes theoretical overview of several translation strategies applicable for translation of words denoting cultural realia. The emphasis is laid on the strategies, which are proposed in order to prevent the possible cultural ‘vulnerability’. The article accentuates that the most suitable translation strategies should be determined by a variety of factors: the type of the text, the type of realia, the degree of acceptance of unusual collocations in receiving culture, and the model reader.

Already in 1964 Wilfred Cantwell Smith wrote that: “the term ‘religion’ is confusing, unnecessary, and distorting”. Since then many new definitions for ‘religion’ were elaborated. In 2012 Jared Diamond not only reminded sixteen of them, but also proposed two new definitions. The multiplicity of defini-tions for ‘culture’ is well known. In the recent anthropological reflection the basic concepts of Western civilization underwent a dramatically transfor-mations. This is true also for religion and culture and found a specific culmi-nation in the theory elaborated by Clifford Geertz, who saw religion as acul-tural system. The aim of this paper is to reconsider these two concepts in the light of the notion of memory. The contribution by Maurice Halbwachs who indicated a close link between religion and memory has to be included and also more recent analysis by Jan and Aleida Assmann, particularly their em-phasis on cultural memory.

This article aims to show that currently, when our culture, system of values, sense of security and the economic situation suffer from a vast crisis, it is advisable to look for a dolution not only in the immediate vicinity. European systems of values derive from antiquity and Christianity. Unfortunately nowadays they are frequently forgotten and neglected, which lowers the level of ethical and security culture (both in micro and macro scale). Western societies become the "worshipers' of consumerism. That is why the values which came from ancient China and Japan and have been collected in Bushido (the ethical code of the Japanese marital clans) can be an interesting alternative for Europeans. It is possible for the Far East values to relateto Western cardinal virtues. Seeing the fundamental virtues in a new way can be a help to the renewal of the value system among Western societies. This applies mostly to uniformed services which have contact with the Far East principles through training of the Marital Arts.

The broken relation among culture and faith becomes “drama of our times” (Paul VI), thus, overcoming that broken relation has always been a challenge for the Church, catholic theology and spirituality. This article, first, signals the penetration of culture into Christianity and makes you more familiar with what ancients fought about culture. And next, gives two positive examples about shaping the culture through the faith; first, in the Karolin epoch (7th—9th century), using the example of Benedict monks’ contribution, second, in the golden era of French spirituality (17th century), using the examples of Saint Francis de Sales’ spiritual teachings and Saint Vincent de Paul’s educational and charity works. The further part of the article shows the progressing departure of culture from faith beginning with French Renaissance and through the era of Enlightenment until the complete cessation of common relation in philosophical currents of 19th century. The last part of the article shows the new relation of the Church to the world and culture initiated by the Second Vatican Council, which further was continued and developed through the teachings of the Popes Paul VI and John Paul II, and evangelism activity. Such relation is based upon a wide understanding of culture (what was worked out by secular science and expresses themselves (among other things) in inculturation of the faith, faith’s creative role of culture and intermediary role of faith in realization of evangelization.

Although man creates culture, culture also shapes man through the (religious) patterns and values it transmits. Religion is expressed in culture, but religion also transcends culture because the object of religion is transcendent. Therefore, religion has a role in forming culture. Different models on the relationship between culture and religion exist, including: opposition and confrontation as well as complementarity and cooperation. The best model of culture and religion is one of creative cooperation.

This paper focuses on three fundamental notions-realities which describe human life and constitute at the same time its foundation and the space of partic¬ipation in it. The triad culture – education – truth describes the most essential human experiences, simultaneously, defining the direction of their deepening and creative developing. Certainly, in the times like these when everything is questioned notions-experiences that belong to this triad are not problem-free. What is more, they are deemed to be superfluous, especially in ultra-left-wing ideologies in which suicidal tendencies are easily discernible. Taking this into consideration, it is hardly possible to avoid polemic attitude towards numerous questions even those most essential since in their semantic field the greatest confusion may be detected. That is why there are numerous attempts to answer the question how, in the face of such a dynamic spiritual condition of the world, those fundamental issues can be dealt with within the frames of anthropology, and how they can be justified from the anthropological point of view. This re¬flection is rather philosophical in character, however, it is also inspired by the fundamental Christian truth which says about the incarnation of the Son of God and about the salvation of man made by Him.

The paper deals with the presence of culture and its impact on social life as a whole, that is with its transformation from a private pastime to a pervasive social phenomenon. Culture has become ambiguous and while on the one hand it represents a positive social reality, on the other hand it is the enemy of everything that the liberal holds dear – reason, universal right, personal liberty, free inquiry, cosmopolitanism, critical reflection – it becomes the enemy of the civilization.

This paper aims to present culture jamming as a rhetorical practice (semantic activism).Culture jamming is an anticonsumerist resistance strategy, a countercultural tactic and a critical practice consisting in manipulation of media and other public discourses by artists and activists, in order to challenge the dominant memes, to subvert the mainstream (cultural, political and commercial) messages, using their own discourses and altering them to create alternative meanings. Culture jamming exploits intertextualty and counterframing, in different ways of deconstructing and re-constructing hegemonic messages, using allusion, irony and parody as polemical devices. Also, perspective by incongruity is used: oddly juxtaposed symbols that influence audiences to adopt new perspectives and create new insights. Cultural jammers are questioning the consumerist and corporate worldviews.

Through analysing the dramatic poetry of Ancient Greece, we shed light on the issue of the rise and fall of the shared world of the polis. The theoretical framework is the Nietzschean analysis of the relationship between the Dionysian and the Apollonian principle, which according to our analysis corresponds to the relationship between Politics and Order. We show the shared world comes about through forging an alliance between Politics and Order, and survives while these two warring brothers (frères ennemis) are united under great tension. The Greek tragedians teach us that doing away with this tension poses a dire threat to the survival of the shared world. Following the Ancient Greek artistic roadmap, we show how the rational striving to remove the dis-order and potential chaos from the foundations of Order leads to the ultimate separation of the Apollonian and the Dionysian, whose nature, once they have been disjointed, start changing. The Apollonian becomes an empty husk that fails to tame the awakened, chaotic life of the society, while the political descends either into unhinged beastliness or dull listlessness, devoid of meaning and measure. The conclusions this analysis leads us to are used to shed new light onto the misguided post-WW2 attempts of European politicians to build an Apollonian supranational Order of reason and measure, from whose foundations will the political, the unpredictable, the elusive, and the potentially destructive, be banished forever.
