Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on translation problems, which occur having to translate cultural realia denoting lexical units. The paper also analyses the significance of preservation of national culture and identity in translation having in mind European cultural context and its implications. Besides, some classification schemes of cultural realia are presented. The work includes theoretical overview of several translation strategies applicable for translation of words denoting cultural realia. The emphasis is laid on the strategies, which are proposed in order to prevent the possible cultural ‘vulnerability’. The article accentuates that the most suitable translation strategies should be determined by a variety of factors: the type of the text, the type of realia, the degree of acceptance of unusual collocations in receiving culture, and the model reader.
