Divković’s Abramovi Verši (Abarm’s Verses)

Divkovićevi Abramovi Verši

Author(s): Krešimir Šimić / Language(s): Croatian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Matija Divković; Abramovi verši (‘Abram’s Verses’); mandatum– promissio; sola fide; poetic of drama;

The first part of this paper deals with the possible manuscripts that Divković used for writing Abarmovi verši (‘Abarm’s Verses’). After recapitulating previous studies, it is concluded that Divković used one unknown or maybe two known manuscripts. In the second part, after considering two theological topoi (mandatum–promissio and sola fide) that were prevalent in the dramatizations of biblical texts, the paper emphasises that Divković chose his dramatization based on the topos of sola fide. Later on the paper points out that such a choice is unexpected because it is characteristic of Protestant dramatizations, which advocate “justification by faith”, while Roman Catholic dramatizations advocate “justification by works”.

Author(s): Natalia Wyszogrodzka-Liberadzka / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Krugovi; Croatian identity; communist Yougoslavia; literary generation

In the historical and cultural narrative of the 1950s in Croatia, one of the most important points is the release of the first issue of the “Krugovi” magazine in 1952. The writers that gathered around the newly formed magazine started a period of affirmation of diversity and praise of creative freedom in any possible form. The young generation did not agree with the imposed dogmas and promoted aesthetic clichés, but they did not fight openly.Nevertheless, despite the fact that the magazine was proclaimed apolitical, the authorsfailed to keep a hundred percent of impartiality and they sometimes spoke on issues theyconsidered important, such as the signing of the agreement of Novi Sad in 1954, whichthey considered harmful in reference to the Croatian language.

Critiques, Forewords, Conversations, 1962 — 2011

Kritike, predgovori, razgovori, 1962. — 2011.

Author(s): Želimir Koščević / Language(s): Croatian

Keywords: Croatian Arts; Antun Motika; Ivana Tomljenović Meller; Oscar Schlemmer; Frida Kahlo; Konstantin Čiurlionis; Ivan Kožarić; James Ensor; Claude Monet; Sebastião Salgado; Jimmie Durham;

The activity of Želimir Koščević started at the beginning of ’60s, while he was still studying the History of Art at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. At the time, the Yugoslav society was, in the sphere of visual arts, firmly oriented towards progressive creative concepts. Croatia and Zagreb were the home of one of the liveliest art scenes in Europe. Koščević personally contributed to the scene as a curator of the Student Centre Gallery in the most important period of its activity, from 1966 to 1979. <br>There he promoted artistic practices and artists who would essentially mark the national and global art during the next period and inaugurated the curator practice that would become a norm in the sphere of contemporary art presentation. Although Koščević had a high level of theoretical knowledge, the incessant, active curator work and experience of managing the gallery, as well as the direct interaction with artists and audience, provided practical insights for his critical estimations of exhibitions and art phenomena.

Affiliation of Bosniak Literature Within the Context of Exile of Our Time

Affiliation of Bosniak Literature Within the Context of Exile of Our Time

Pripadnost bošnjačke književnosti u kontekstu egzila našeg vremena

Author(s): Srebren Dizdar / Language(s): Bosnian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: composite nature of literature from Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bosniak literature in exile; cultural identity in diaspora; dual belonging;

Although the composite structure of literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina had developed under rather specific social, cultural and historical circumstances, only, and on rare occasions in the past, some authors from these parts wrtote their works in exile (Habiba Rizvanbegović-Stočević, Arif-beg Rizvanbegović), but the separation from a homeland was the topic that some of its prominent writers from all its constituent segments came back to from time to time (Šantić, Andrić, Šop, La Bohoreta, etc.). It was only during the horrible war events towards the end of 20th century, which had forced not only hundreds of thousands of people to leave their native soil, but also inspired diverse forms of literary activities to emerge in exile. Their fundamental defining element was the attempt of securing and preserving ethnic, cultural and any other form of identity in the new surroundings. The paper tries to find some answers to the basic question posed in relation to a determination of literature in/and from Bosnia and Herzegovina, more specifically in view of its Bosniak component, which has been expresed in the published collections of poetry and short stories, rarely in plays, and in the majority of cases, in novel forms – from Norway, Denmark and USA, as well as some other parts of contemporary world. It points out to the situation in the immediate neighbourhood, nowadays largely referred to as the ‘region’, where some authors have continued to write their works, although they remained deeply connected to the language, culture, custioms and identity of the ethnic background they had come from, despite the fact that, in the meantime, they became citizens of the countries of admission. They all have continued to add a characteristic exile expression to the literary output in these new homelands. A rather specific issue deals with the concurrent belonging to literatures those Bosniak authors contributed to with their works, irrespective if their books had been published originally in the languages of these places, or in their mother Bosnian tongue. The works of Bekim Sejranović, Alen Mešković and Ismet Prcić have been analysed in the paper, together with some other names, as the possible examples of either proving or disapproving the initial hypothesis on the identity duality in the Bosniak or any other literature(s) for that matter.

Musical and Literary Dictionary. Compositions Inspired by Literary Art. Czech Composers. Part I. of the Trilogy.

Hudebně-literární slovník. Hudební díla inspirovaná slovesným uměním: Světoví skladatelé. I. díl slovníkové trilogie

Author(s): Vladimír Spousta / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Music-literary dictionary; Czech lexicographic literature; Music; Verbal arts; literary works;

The music-literary dictionary of world’s composers is a contribution to Czech lexicographic literature as it brings a new perspective on the world’s music. It exclusively focuses on composers who were inspired by verbal arts. Deep correspondence between music and literary work is often hidden or is considered as a mere coincidence. It is therefore praiseworthy that the author systematically emphasises and records this interconnection. The dictionary serves as a remarkably plentiful source of information for every admirer of art.

Forget Evil – The Path to Reconciliation or One of the Specific Ways to Deny Genocide against Bosniaks

Forget Evil – The Path to Reconciliation or One of the Specific Ways to Deny Genocide against Bosniaks

Zaboraviti zlo – put ka pomirenju ili jedan od specifičnih načina negiranja genocida nad Bošnjacima

Author(s): Muamer Džananović / Language(s): Bosnian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Bosnia and Herzegovina; continuity of crimes; genocide against Bosniaks; denial of genocide; forgetting evil; memory of evil;

It is not a novus in scientific and public discourse to insist on forgetting the “burdening” past. Just as Friedrich Nietzsche did not find anything valuable in the memory of evil, believing that turning back turns us against life, so also lately, at the time of the strongest wave of genocide denial against Bosniaks, there are tendencies in public discourse that victims should forget evil committed against them. The oblivion is presented as a precondition for the way forward, the way to a common and better future, the way to development of the state and society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is forgotten that evil is “repetitive” as Hannah Arendt says regardless of the punishment. Once a specific crime occurs, its recurrence is much more likely than the possibility of its occurrence. The continuity of the centuries-long recurrence of crimes against Bosniaks, which is in fact a matter of the identity of the state and society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also of Bosniaks as victims, is an adequate example and proof of this attitude. The continuity of the centuries-long recurrence of crimes against Bosniaks, which in fact represents a matter of the identity of the Bosnian state and society, but also of Bosniaks as victims, is an adequate example and proof of this attitude. Consequently, in this paper we will look at (un)conscious ways and methods of denying genocide against Bosniaks, identify new methods of denial, certain deviance dealing in the aftermath genocide, but also to give recommendations in which direction the study of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina should go in order to adequately remember it, and finally stop the evil of genocide against Bosniaks that has lasted for several centuries.

The Process of Integration of the Local Zadar Component of Croatian Literature into Central National Literature – from (Pre)romanticism to Moderna Period

The Process of Integration of the Local Zadar Component of Croatian Literature into Central National Literature – from (Pre)romanticism to Moderna Period

Proces integracije lokalne zadarske sastavnice hrvatske književnosti u središnju nacionalnu književnost – od (pred)romantizma do moderne

Author(s): Zvjezdana Rados / Language(s): Croatian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: periphery; national center; Croatian literary canon; Zadar’s literature

The paper will analyze Zadar’s components of Croatian literature in the period from 1840s until the first decade of the 20th century, marked by nationalintegrative processes and forming a modern national identity. The research object will be the specifics of the development of that part of Croatian literature as well as its relations to literary and historical processes in the center, the mainstream, of national literature – from national revival movements or the period of preromanticism and romanticism, through pre-realism and realism to the period of moderna and stronger integration of Zadar’s (provincial, Dalmatian) segment into central, national Croatian literature. Considerable attention will be paid to the processes of mutual permeating, accepting and rejecting, affirming and negating of Zadar’s periphery, one of the most important peripheries of the Croatian literary canon, and its national center, Zagreb’s mainstream. This issue will be presented through paradigmatic writers and journals that marked key periods of Croatian linguistic and literary homogenization: in the period of (pre)romanticism, during 1840s, this implies the journal Zora dalmatinska and paradigmatic personalities of the literary circle formed around that revival journal (Šime Starčević and Petar Preradović, even Ana Vidović); in the period of folk-enlightenment (pre)realism, from the sixties to the end of the eighties, this includes paradigmatic personality of the Croatian National Revival in Dalmatia – politician and writer Mihovil Pavlinović, as well as Iskra journal and its editor Nikola Šimić (a writer who created a specific peripheral genre of folk stories from rural life); in the time of disintegration of realism and turning towards modernist styles this implies the initiator of Croatian modern literary criticism Jakša Čedomil and the prominent names of the Croatian literary canon in the period of moderna – Ivo Vojnović, Vladimir Nazor and Milan Begović, as well as Lovor magazine of Milutin Cihlar Nehajev.

Question of the Uprising of 1875–1878. in Bosnian historiography: between historical truth and multiperspectivity

Pitanje ustanka 1875–1878. u bosanskohercegovačkoj historiografiji: između historijske istine i multiperspektivnosti

Author(s): Edin Radušić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian / Publication Year: 0

Bosnian-Herzegovinian historiography of the 21st century shows that the uprising and the eastern crisis (1875–1878), as part of the great theme of imperialism and nationalism, are phenomena of long duration. During this period, new books and articles appear that elaborate or significantly touch the uprising. The dominant feature of much of this new historiography and its creators is that they were more or less willingly placed in a national context. The central point of historiography on the uprising has been Milorad Ekmečić, who intensively dealt with this thematic framework in the second half of the 20th and the first half of the 21st century. In his more relaxed phase of interpreting historical themes, Ekmečić, in methodological terms, selecting and processing phenomena of long duration, strongly connected the uprising in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1875–1878 not only with previous events (the “Serbian Revolution” and other uprisings of the Balkan Christian peasantry) but also with those that recur at certain intervals until the end of the 20th century. Moreover, in his interpretation, the uprising of 1875–1878, together with other similar events, before and after it, belongs to one whole that is an expression of revolt against the socio-economic system of inequality and division, essentially established by the Ottoman (Islamic) state idea and practice. Established social relations during this period, which ultimately resulted in the division and distrust of members of different religious and national groups, Ekmečić saw as the historical foundations of division and mutual violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans at the end of the 20th century. Such Ekmečić’s approach found fertile ground among some of his historiographical followers, who at scientific conferences and round tables, together with institutional leaders of political, scientific and cultural life in Republika Srpska, strengthened the link between the Bosnian-Herzegovina uprising 1875–1878 and the present. In interpreting the causes of the uprising in the Bosnian-Serbian historiographic circle, Ekmečić’s thesis on the dominant socio-economic causes of the uprising and on agrarian movements as the essence of the national revolution has been largely retained, with some exception in recent interpretations of Bratislav Teinović.

The book brings an edition of a set of letters from Martinů to Novák and also Jan Novák’s correspondence about Martinů and vice versa. The interpretation of the newly acquired sources reveals a rich network of related facts, events and contacts that reconstruct the framework of contemporary musical culture. They also define the role of Jan Novák and his wife Eliška in promoting Martinů’s work in the 1950’s in our country at a time when he was facing politically engaged criticism. The monograph also strives to point out parallels in the life and work of both composers, whether it is emigration, Europeanism, humanism or the relationship to folk music and theater. The book, which is published on the 100th anniversary of Jan Novák’s birth, seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work of this important composer, who was sentenced to compulsory collective amnesia due to emigration.
