JEWELS IN MIRACULOUS LANGUAGE

DRAGULJI U ČUDOTVORNOME JEZIKU

Author(s): Antun Lučić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 11-12/2011

Exploring the Relationship Between Perceptions of Teaching Quality, Some Motivational Beliefs and Students' Achievement and Satisfaction

Ispitivanje odnosa percepcije kvalitete kolegija, nekih aspekata motivacije te studentskoga dostignuća i zadovoljstva

Author(s): Luka Marinović / Language(s): / Issue: 4/2014

Keywords: student learning; motivation; education; perception of the quality of teaching; the experience of university study

This study was aimed to explore the relationship between some general aspects of studying, students' perceptions of teaching quality, some motivational beliefs and students' achievement and satisfaction, as well as to determine the specific contribution of particular groups of predictors in explaining students' achievement and satisfaction. Numerous authors suggest that students' perceptions of teaching quality play a key role in the formation of students' learning because they help students to develop motivational beliefs, which influence the way students learn and lead to different learning outcomes. Therefore, positive relationships among motivation variables, students' perceptions of teaching quality, motivational beliefs, and students' achievement and satisfaction can be expected. As many as 267 first-year graduate students participated in the study where, in addition to the general data about studying, the participants were also required to estimate subjective experience of the teaching quality, some motivational aspects and students' achievement and satisfaction. The results showed that students' accomplishments were significantly correlated with almost all motivational beliefs, as well as with all factors of students' perception of the teaching quality. Multiple hierarchic regressive analyses confirmed that all groups of variables significantly contribute to the explanation of the students' achievement and satisfaction. These findings indicate that perceptions of teaching quality and some of the motivational beliefs are important predictors of student learning outcomes.

An initiative for the autonomy Herzegovina with the aim of weakening Radic's influence on the 1925 parliamentary elections

Inicijativa za autonomiju Hercegovine s ciljem slabljenja Radićeva utjecaja na skupštinskim izborima 1925. godine

Author(s): Ivica Glibušić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1/2015

Keywords: HRSS (Croatian Republican Peasant Party); HPS (Croatian Folk Party); dissidents; autonomy; election campaign; political candidates; election lists; political party promotion; elections; Mostar distric

The results of the 1923 parliamentary elections announced a fierce campaign for the next elections in February 1925. Dissidents of HRSS led by Matej Kordic tried to capitalize their good results in the 1923 elections through the aggressive promotion of new elections. They were supported by the Serbian Radicals, and to attract voters in Herzegovina, they focused on the idea of the autonomy of Herzegovina in their campaign. Major political confrontations, when it comes to Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, occurred between HRSS and HPS, both of them aiming to obtain legitimacy for representing Croats in political life.Despite the support of the Franciscans at the 1925 elections, HPS in Herzegovina suffered a complete debacle, gaining not a single seat. On the other hand, HRSS led a campaign against all - the regime's authority, its dissidents and HPS, achieving thus absolute victory among Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, HRSS won 67 seats, whereas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, they won 10 seats (4 in Herzegovina, 6 in Bosnia). Radic's dissident Matej Kordic suffered a heavy defeat in the electoral district of Mostar, winning only 103 votes. Belgrade authorities, dissatisfied with the electoral victory of HRSS, announced that after the proclamation of election results an armed rebellion occurred in Herzegovina followed by the persecution of non-Croat population. Due to such allegations, additional police and military forces were sent to Herzegovina, which after some time denied there had been any rebellion. The election results gave HRSS the right to represent Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina in public and political life.

Roman bricks and tiles from the Varaždin city museum

Roman bricks and tiles from the Varaždin city museum

Rimske opeke iz fundusa Gradskog muzeja Varaždin

Author(s): Lovorka Štimac-Dedić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 25/2014

Keywords: ceramic building material; standardisation; specific characteristics of bricks and tiles;

Bricks and tiles from archaeological sites of the Varaždin region represent the remains of a new type of civil engineering which was introduced by the Romans to the conquered territories, including the province of Pannonia in the 1st ct. AD. Although the number of systematically excavated Roman sites is relatively small, they provide a general account of building activities. In this paper, bricks and tiles from Petrijanec, Hrastovsko, Lonja and Ludbreg are analysed, as well as those from Roman villas in Kelemen, Martinić and Šemovec-Kupinje. Typical, standardised bricks are included, as well as those specific in terms of their origin, archaeological context or other characteristics. Brick as building material serves several purposes. On the one hand, it provides valuable information which enables reconstruction of brick production processes, trade routes, as well as building techniques used in Pannonia. On the other hand, it can also provide valuable information about everyday life or some other aspects of Roman history. That is why it is important to take into account not only the role of brick as a building material, but also all these other aspects it may contain.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS IN SCHOOL

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS IN SCHOOL

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS IN SCHOOL

Author(s): Siniša Opić / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2016

Keywords: interpersonal relations; teachers, pupils; singularity; didactic support and interaction; rough verbal and physical treatment;

As part of the scientific project titled “The Curriculum of Social Competences and Relations in School”, the aim of this paper is to examine the quality of interpersonal relations between teachers and pupils. On a sample of 432 teachers from 20 towns, 35 primary schools in the Republic of Croatia, and 432 pupils, it was confirmed that there is a difference in the appraisal of the quality of their interpersonal relations. Although the overall quality of interpersonal relations between pupils and teachers is at a moderately satisfactory level, pupils still appraise the quality of interpersonal relations lower than their teachers. In view of latent dimensionality, a factor questionnaire structure was used (14 variables; ordinal type) and two main components (subscales) determined: didactic support and interaction, and rough verbal and physical treatment. As part of the differential draft of our research, no gender differences were established (between female and male teachers) in the appraisal of the quality of interpersonal relations with pupils (on two subscales). The correlation analysis confirmed a low negative statistically significant correlation between the years of service and the subscale rough verbal and physical treatment (Rho=-0.101). In view of the subscale of rough verbal and physical treatment between pupils and teachers, such results on a negative correlation imply that older teachers, as opposed to their younger colleagues, use more corporal punishment in schools, treat pupils rudely, use nasty and impolite words, and call pupils insulting names.

Locally specific measures for employment aimed at regional development

Locally specific measures for employment aimed at regional development

Lokalno specifične mjere za zapošljavanje u funkciji regionalnoga razvoja

Author(s): Vladimir Cini,Nataša Drvenkar,Ivan Sarić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 2/2013

Keywords: labour market; regional development; regional competitiveness; locally specific employment measures; European Union;

The oldest and largest sub-region in the world functioning on the principle of economic union is the European Union. The creation of a single market has initiated the process of conditional adjustment of markets in the EU member states, which has a significant impact on the social welfare of its citizens. It is necessary to tackle this issue by joint efforts within the European Union. As globalization processes push for economic integration and development of competitive advantage, the regions will have to make some challenging adjustments. The development tends to concentrate in highly competitive regions, while regions in the periphery lag behind. However, this pertains not only to the economic lag, but also to a potential negative political situation.Locally specific active employment policy measures are a continuation of the effort to make these measures more flexible. They refer to the Joint Assessment of Employment Policy Priorities and the IPA Human Resources Development Operational Programme - a regional policy instrument of the European Union. Both documents highlight the issue of disproportional development of regions, which requires special local measures and active labour market policy programmes. To reduce regional differences in development, it is necessary to invest more resources in the regions that lag behind. In this particular case, this means the counties in Croatia with high unemployment rates, a large number of registered unemployed persons and low employment rate. Consequently, this paper explains the importance of the adoption of locally specific measures for employment, which unfortunately did not take hold in the Republic of Croatia, and highlights the need for further decentralization of public services, with the aim of balancing regional development.

Information system of knowledge management in hypertext organization

Information system of knowledge management in hypertext organization

Informacijski sustav za upravljanje znanjem u hipertekst organizaciji

Author(s): Miroslav Žugaj,Markus Schatten / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1-2/2008

Keywords: information; development; knowledge; organization;

In this paper, we show an implemented information system capable of supporting knowledge management in Noaka’s hypertext organization. Appropriate supportive mechanisms for the four knowledge sharing processes (socialization, externalization, internalization, combination) were defined through a modified semantic wiki system. We suggest an information system model that shall support the hypertext organization through its four layers: (1) the business system layer (supported by traditional information system), (2) the project team layer (supported by a dynamic project management system) and (3) the knowledge based layer (supported through a modified semantic wiki system). In the end, we give the results of a preliminary applicability research as well as guidelines for implementation and use of such system.

Preliminary analysis of reliability and validity of the questionnaire "Aural Rehabilitation Outcomes Profile" (PIRS)

Preliminary analysis of reliability and validity of the questionnaire "Aural Rehabilitation Outcomes Profile" (PIRS)

Preliminary analysis of reliability and validity of the questionnaire "Aural Rehabilitation Outcomes Profile" (PIRS)

Author(s): Ines Šulja,Luka Bonetti,Iva Hrastinski / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2017

Keywords: acquired hearing loss; rehabilitation outcome measures; self-assessment; Aural Rehabilitation Outcome Profile– PIRS; reliabilitY; validity;

The aim of this paper is to provide a preliminary analysis of the reliability and validity of the Aural Rehabilitation Outcome Profile questionnaire (PIRS). This self-assessment questionnaire is used to quantify functional hearing difficulties in adults in regards to factors such as acoustic environment and interlocutor features (parts 1, 3, and 5), frequency of occurrence of different compensating communication strategies, and severity of socio-emotional consequences of acquired hearing loss (part 4), influence of acquired hearing loss (AHL) on everyday activities (part 2), and hearing aid performance and user satisfaction (part 5). An analysis of the reliability and validity of each individual part/scale of PIRS was conducted on data obtained from 47 adult participants (37 hearing aid users and 10 normal hearing individuals), including the analysis of Cronbach’s reliability coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients, factor analysis, and the Mann-Whitney U for testing the self-assessment differences between hearing participants and those with hearing loss as well as correlation analysis between hearing loss degree and self-assessment results. The results indicated that all PIRS subscales/parts show the properties of reliability and validity, warranting additional examination of psychometric properties with the goal of assessing the suitability of using PIRS as a clinical outcome measure of aural rehabilitation for acquired hearing loss.

Janko Polić Kamov – Towards the Avant-Garde

Janko Polić Kamov – Towards the Avant-Garde

Janko Polić Kamov – u susret avangardi

Author(s): Iva Polić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 1/2017

Keywords: Janko Polić Kamov; the avant-garde; futurism;

The paper analyses the status of Janko Polić Kamov in Croatian literature. Although Kamov is usually referred to as a representative of Croatian Futurism, his work anticipated the avant-garde on the whole. His contemporaries and relevant figures in Croatian literature in the first half of the twentieth century failed to recognise and/or acknowledge Kamov as one of the originators of not only the Croatian but European avant-garde as well. Today, his significance is widely acknowledged, but he remains quite unknown to the general public in Croatia, or known exclusively as a futurist, or even a “foul-mouthed writer.” The paper looks into the features of Futurism in general and into the work of Kamov. We conclude, based on the examples presented and the relevant literature on Kamov, that his work cannot be attributed solely to Futurism but also to other avant-garde movements such as Expressionism and Surrealism. Kamov did indeed argue and fight for artistic freedom, and against social and literary conventions. However, his work is not socially-engaged: it is primarily an expression of his inner world and based on his personal experience. Due to this nonconformist attitude, he came to be referred to as the anti-poet, a name by which he, surprisingly or not, goes even today – more than a hundred years after his death.

ABOUT THE NAMES OF LANGUAGE IN THE LITERATURE OF THE 18th CENTURY

ABOUT THE NAMES OF LANGUAGE IN THE LITERATURE OF THE 18th CENTURY

O NAZIVIMA JEZIKA U KNJIŽEVNIM DJELIMA XVIII VIJEKA

Author(s): Vedad Mulavdić / Language(s): Bosnian / Issue: 1-2/2017

Keywords: Simeon Piščević; Mula Mustafa Bašeskija; fra Filip Lastrić; Memoari; Ljetopis; Pregled starina Bosanke provincije; Russian language; Turkish language; Latin language; name of language;

The paper discusses the different names of the language in the literature of the 18th century. The sources of research were consisted of the works of three writers: Simeon Piščević, Mula-Mustafa Bašeskija i fra Filip Lastrić. All texts, written in foreign language (Russian, Turkish, Latin), include valuable data about the names of native language. Writers write in a foreign language, but they think in their native language named differently as Serbian, Slovenian, Native, Illyrian, Bosnian. It means that the awareness of the native language and its particularities has been present in this period of our language development. Also, it is obvious the difference between spoken language of that period (which is always native) and the official language of literature, which is foreign. Furthermore, as the autors belong to the different traditions of literature, their works are convenient for historical and theoretical analysis of the literature, which results in, aside of historical-linguistics approach, an integral insight in the tradition of the language in literature of the 18th century.

Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of X-efficiency in the Croatian Market

Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of X-efficiency in the Croatian Market

Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of X-efficiency in the Croatian Market

Author(s): Ozren Rafajac,Marinko Skare / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2017

Keywords: X-efficiency; social efficiency; market failures; transitional economies;

This article aims to explain the idea of X-efficiency, which indicates the difference between potential and actual output. If any business subject produces below its own potentials, it can be considered X-inefficient. To determine whether X-inefficiency in Croatian companies exists, how large it is in its volume and why it appears, in 2014, empirical research was conducted. Since only 22% of interviewed companies use all their available resources and given that the mean capacity utilization rate is only 70% and the mean resource utilization rate is 68%, our study results suggest that among business subjects in the Republic of Croatia, X-inefficiency exists to a large extent. Qualitative analysis shows that X-inefficiency appears mostly because of the competitive pressure. Other reasons include legal and administrative problems, the existence of inertness and a lack of motivation, the decision to work “less for more”, inadequate demand, economic crisis, the decision to save resources for future use, seasonal demand, incompetence of the government, corruption, and the risk of debt collection as well as local organizational problems.
