A heretic reading "Death and the Dervish"

Jedno heretičko čitanje “Derviša i smrti”

Albania: a nation of unique inter-religious tolerance and steadfast aspirations for EU integration

Albania: a nation of unique inter-religious tolerance and steadfast aspirations for EU integration

Author(s): Thomas Patrick Melady / Language(s): English / Issue: 07/2013

Keywords: Albania; European Union; Religious tolerance; Corruption; NATO; Albanian Orthodox and Muslim population; Communism; United States

Religious freedom has been always considered as a strong indicator democracy and institutional set up in a country. Ex- communist countries in their efforts to set up a state of law and foster democracy, particularly, are more sensible toward indicators such as religious freedom, tolerance and diversity considering them strong components of their social tissue necessary to set up a functional democracy. Their past legacy and history, are strong factors influencing their present and future. Analyzing the past, present and future of a country’s religiosity, religious freedom and tolerance, represent a valid contribution not only in terms of social assessment. They also compound a first layer for policies and strategies to create open societies and reinforce the institutional set up and rule of law. Albania, among these countries, represents a very unique case of variation in attitudes and relation toward religion along history. But a strong tolerant component characterizes the overall perception and behavior toward religious diversity. A historic, politic and social analysis of the Albanian case of religious tolerance and co-existence, necessary to understand the real western inspiration of the country and its democracy’s future, is the biggest contribution of this paper.

High School Cheating in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

High School Cheating in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Varanje u srednjim školama u Hrvatskoj i u Bosni i Hercegovini

Author(s): Slavica Šimić Šašić,Mira Klarin / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 104/2009

Keywords: morality and cheating; prevalence of cheating; reasons for cheating; school cheating

School cheating in Croatia is a widespread phenomenon, but it is little spoken of, and even less investigated. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence and acceptability of cheating, reasons why it occurs, the existence of possible differences in cheating considering the states where the students come from and the attitude toward the acceptability of cheating. The research was conducted on a sample of 390 students of high schools in the Republic of Croatia (in Zadar) and 353 students of high schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina (in Žepče). During one school hour students completed The Demographic Data Questionnaire, Scale of Cheating, Scale of Reasons for Cheating and The Social Injustice Questionnaire. The results showed that high school cheating is very frequent both in Croatia and in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The reasons for cheating can be divided into two groups: internal and external. The students in the Republic of Croatia tend to cheat more, and cheating is more acceptable to them than to the students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The students who approve of cheating are more susceptible to cheating (in both states), which is in accordance with Turiel's model of morality which supposes that students do not perceive cheating as a problem of morality, but rather as a simple disobedience of social norms.

Reproductive Strategies and Jealousy in Men and Women

Reproduktivne strategije i ljubomora muškaraca i žena

Author(s): Benjamin Banai,Nataša Šimić,Irena Pavela / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 03/2013

Keywords: jealousy; sexual infidelity; emotional infidelity; reproductive strategy

Previous studies showed that men are more sensitive to sexual infidelity, while women are more sensitive to emotional infidelity. However, only a few of them investigated differences in jealousy within each sex. Moreover, studies of sex differences in reproductive strategies showed that women are more restrictive in comparison to men. According to evolutionary psychology, both long-term and short-term strategies could be found within each sex. The aim of this study is to investigate differences in sensitivity to sexual and emotional infidelity between restrictive and nonrestrictive men and women. 526 subjects took part in this study. They estimated the intensity of jealousy in hypothetical situations of sexual and emotional infidelity. Furthermore, sociosexual orientation was assessed using the Croatian adaptation of Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (Kardum, Gračanin, & Hudek-Knežević, 2006). Based on the results, subjects were divided into the groups of restrictive and nonrestrictive individuals. The results showed greater sensitivity to sexual infidelity in men and emotional infidelity in women. In comparison to nonrestrictive men, restrictive men showed greater sensitivity to sexual infidelity. Women are more sensitive to emotional infidelity, regardless of their reproductive strategy. Advantages and disadvantages of both strategies, as well as their effect on jealousy, could be interpreted within the context of evolutionary development of mechanisms for partner selection and mate guarding.

Family and Peer Contribution to Decision Making in Different Aspects of Life for Adolescents – Cross-Cultural Perspective

Obiteljski i vršnjački doprinos donošenju odluka iz raznih sfera života u adolescenata – kroskulturalna perspektiva

Author(s): Slavica Šimić Šašić,Ana Proroković,Mira Klarin / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 107/2010

Keywords: family; peers; decision making; cross-cultural perspective

For the last several years science of psychology is trying to find a way to understand the influence of culture on development, appreciating the processes that happen at the micro level (psychological processes) and processes that happen on the macro level (sociological processes). In that context, the authors emphasize that every culture enables the development of a child within a certain ecological-cultural context. With this research we have tried to compare the contribution of family and peers in decision making in different aspects of life in two countries: Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. For that purpose we have conducted a research throughout the two groups of adolescents: group of adolescents from Republic of Croatia and group of adolescents from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the purpose of establishing the influence of family and peers on decisions that adolescents make in different aspects of their lives (entertainment, moral values) with respect to culture differences (Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina). The obtained results point to the conclusion of different strengths of influence of parents and peers to decision making between the adolescents in two cultures, and they are interpreted within the ecological theory.

ANTHROPOGENETIC STRUCTURE OF THE ISLAND POPULATIONS OF THE EASTERN ADRIATIC

ANTHROPOGENETIC STRUCTURE OF THE ISLAND POPULATIONS OF THE EASTERN ADRIATIC

ANTROPOGENETSKA STRUKTURA OTOČNIH POPULACIJA ISTOČNOG JADRANA

Author(s): Maja Bakran,Branka Janićijević / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 12+13/1994

Keywords: Anthropogenetic structure of isladn population; Eastern Adriatic;

The anthropogenetic structure of six island/peninsular populations - Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Pelješac, Silba and Olib - of the Eastern Adriatic, Croatia, is analyzed on the basis of the study of four different erythrocyte antigen systems/groups and two erythrocyte isoenzyme systems. Average sample size was 555 individuals. Allele frequencies and genetic distances values were computed. The obtained results point to the fact that all of the populations in question have preserved their separate characteristics in the course of their (micro) evolution to the present day, which is especially noticeable for the island populations of Korčula and Olib, as these populations distinguish themselves from the other studied populations with a greater degree of isolation.

The lexical fund of Matthew’s Gospel in Croatian glagolitic missals and Bosnian gospels

Leksik Matejeva evanđelja u hrvatskoglagoljskim misalima i bosanskim četveroevanđeljima

Author(s): Erma Ramić-Kunić,Marinka Šimić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian / Issue: 30/2019

Keywords: the Bosnian Gospels; Croatian glagolitic manuscripts; the Gospel of Matthew;

The relation of Croatian glagolitic manuscripts to the Bosnian group’s manuscripts, when it comes to lexic and textology, hasn’t been sufficiently examined in the previous research. This paper has presented a comparision of the Gospel of Matthew in the Bosnian and Croatian glagolitic medieval church texts. The comparison was made on the basis of sixteen Croatian glagolitic manuscripts and printed missals (Vat.4 , Nov., Ber., Hrv., Roč., Lab.1 , New., Vat.8 , Vb.1 , Vb.2 , Oxf.1 , Oxf.2 , Koph., Lab.2 , P i Senj.) with eleven gospels from the Bosnian group of manuscripts (Div., Nik., Dan., Hval., Kop., Vrut., Sof., Pripk., Čajn., Mlet., Dovolj.)

ROMAN AUXILIARY FORTS IN DALMATIA: THE CASE OF TILURIUM

ROMAN AUXILIARY FORTS IN DALMATIA: THE CASE OF TILURIUM

ROMAN AUXILIARY FORTS IN DALMATIA: THE CASE OF TILURIUM

Author(s): Nikola Cesarik / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2019

Keywords: Tilurium; Roman auxiliary fort; river Cetina; river crossing; Pons Tiluri;

The legionary fortress of Tilurium (village of Gardun near Trilj in Croatia) has been the subject of archaeological excavations from 1997; and until now, four monographs have been published dealing with the material found in the campaigns from 1997 to 2010. One of the main achievements of these excavations is definitely the confirmation that the stone objects inside the fortress were not built prior to the reign of Claudius; which is something that has also been noted in the case of Burnum, the second legionary fortress in Dalmatia. However, previously there was no knowledge of the auxiliary forts near the fortress of Tilurium, which, of course, should have been expected, especially considering the case of the fortress of Burnum, for which we know was strengthened with four auxiliary forts, built probably during the reign of Claudius. In this paper, the author reveals the remains of the Roman auxiliary fort located on a karstic plateau above the river Cetina, approx. 550 meters south of the legionary fortress of Tilurium. It is highly evident that the fort controlled the crossing over the river Cetina, situated below the pre-Roman hillfort of Svalinova Gradina in Čaporice. According to the information from the ancient itineraries, it is most likely that the road station of Pons Tiluri should be located around that river crossing.
