Do Personal Characteristics of Teachers Contribute to the Type of Interaction They Have with Their Students?

Do Personal Characteristics of Teachers Contribute to the Type of Interaction They Have with Their Students?

Pridonose li osobne karakteristike nastavnika vrsti interakcije koju ostvaruju sa svojim učenicima

Author(s): Slavica Šimić Šašić,Izabela Sorić / Language(s): Croatian / Issue: 110/2010

Keywords: student–teacher interaction; personal characteristics; self-efficacy; perfectionism; impulsivity; job satisfaction

Some personal characteristics of teachers and teacher behaviors are associated with student achievement. The transactional model of the teaching–learning process (Huitt, 1995) assumed that personal characteristics of teachers affect the success of learning indirectly through teachers' behavior. The aim of this research was to investigate the predictive value of some individual teachers' characteristics for different behaviors of teachers, i.e. for different components of interaction that a teacher has with his/her students in the teaching–learning process. Foreign language teachers in secondary schools filled several scales and personality tests and evaluated what kind of interaction they have with their students by using the Scale teacher–student interaction (Šimić Šašić, 2008) and Support vs challenge in classroom interaction questionnaire (Mariani, 1997). The results show that individual characteristics of the teachers contribute to explaining some components of the teacher–student interaction, specifically: self-efficacy in student engagement explains the strategy of active teaching and the high support / high challenge, self-efficacy in strategies of teaching explains the high expectation of the student. The teacher's gender, age and perfectionism explain the authoritarian management style, job satisfaction, self-efficacy in student engagement and perfectionism contribute to the explanation of the teacher's negative attitude towards teaching, while only perfectionism contributes to explaining the low support and low challenge.

Employment protection legislation in central and east European countries

Employment protection legislation in central and east European countries

Author(s): Mirco Tonin / Language(s): English / Issue: 04/2009

Keywords: employment protection legislation; central and eastern Europe; regulation; labour markets; contracts of employment; dismissal; notice and severance; redundancy; trial periods; trade unions

This article presents updated indicators of employment protection legislation for several central and eastern European countries according to OECD methodology. Common patterns and outliers are identified and additional information is provided to interpret correctly the strictness of the regulatory environment. The aim is to provide some hard evidence for the debate regarding the interface between employment protection legislation and labour markets and welfare, based on the legislations applying in central and east European countries at the end of 2003. The article focuses on the 22 aspects of employment regulation encompassed within the OECD model, examining how each relates to the employment protection legislation in force in each country, and scores each one based on the relative restrictiveness of the regulation. The article concludes that the occurrence of informal arrangements complicates the picture but that this does not invalidate the usefulness of examining formal rules in detail.

Electrodermal Responses and Assessments of Jealousy During Preovulatory and Menstrual Phase of Cycle

Elektrodermalne reakcije i procjene ljubomore tijekom preovulatorne i menstrualne faze ciklusa

Author(s): Nataša Šimić,Andrea Tucaković,Irena Pavela / Language(s): / Issue: 3/2014

Keywords: jealousy; sex hormones; the menstrual cycle

Previous studies have shown higher jealousy in women's reaction to partner's emotional, compared to sexual infidelity. Differences in jealousy over two infidelity types might change during the menstrual cycle. According to the evolutionary hypothesis, a greater jealousy over partner's emotional infidelity was expected in the preovulatory phase when conception is possible and greater jealousy over sexual infidelity in the menstrual phase. Following this, the aim of the study was to investigate the differences in electrodermal reactions (EDR) and assessments of jealousy over partner's emotional and sexual infidelity during the menstrual and preovulatory phase. A group of 26 female participants with a regular menstrual cycle took part in the study during the 13th and the 2nd day of the menstrual cycle. EDR were registered in the control situation and in situations of imagining two infidelity types. Participants also assessed the intensity of jealousy on a five-point scale. General activation and EDR were higher in the preovulatory phase. No differences in EDR between imagining the partner's sexual and emotional infidelity were obtained. Emotional jealousy was estimated higher during the preovulatory phase, while sexual jealousy was higher during the menstrual phase.

SMEs perspective on venture capital investment criteria - a study of Croatian SMEs

SMEs perspective on venture capital investment criteria - a study of Croatian SMEs

Author(s): Marija Šimić Šarić / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2017

Keywords: Venture capital; SMEs; Croatia;

The importance of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) for the economy is indisputable. However, SMEs worldwide, including Croatian ones, have difficulties in accessing financing sources, primarily the alternative ones like venture capital. Seeking venture capital for entrepreneurs is a big challenge because of the absence of unique venture capital investment criteria and investment process. Less than 3% of the entrepreneurs succeed in attracting venture capital. In order to increase the chances of obtaining venture capital in the first phase, this study seeks to explain the required venture capital investment criteria from the perspective of SMEs. To the author’s best knowledge, no studies have to date been undertaken specifically on venture capital investment criteria in Croatia. Final results suggest that that the SME manager/owner (manager/owner of SMEs) who seeks to attract venture capital is a male, aged between 35-44, has an BSc academic degree and the company is privately owned. Regarding the profile characteristics, the results show that, looking from the point of the SME manager/owner, goal orientation and hard work are the most important factors for seeking venture capital in the first phase, followed by innovation and reasonable risk-taking.

Poor poet of the poor

Siromašan pesnik siromaha

Author(s): István Lukács / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1(2)/2007

Keywords: Antun Branko Šimić; expressionism; poems about poor people;

A. B. Šimić (1898–1925) was the most outstanding representative of the Croat expressionistic poetry, creator of the Croat verse libre. At the beginning of the twenties, similarly to a lot of Central-Eastern-European poets (Attila József, Srečko Kosovel), Šimić proved to be sensitive of social aspects and wrote a cycle of poems under the title Siromasi (Poor people). The task of the paper is to find out to what extent these poems conform to and to what extent they are different from the spinal cord of the poet’s works—poems gathered in volume Preobraženja (Metamorphosis).

WITCH(CRAFT) SUBVERSION IN LIVE EVENTS (PERFORMANCE ART) IN CROATIA: FROM ART TO EVERYDAY PRAXIS

Author(s): Suzana Marjanić / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: witch(craft) subversion; cat-iconogram; live events; performance art; Croatia;

This paper offers an interpretative review of artists on the Croatian scene who use in their actions and performances the strategy of ‘witchcraft performance’ as matrix of subversion of the existing model of ‘desirable appearance’, as performative deviation from the desirable image of womanhood, but also as a kind of decision to express protest and subversion. Some women artists, like Neda Šimić-Božinović and Xena L. Županić, alongside the performance of witchcraft subversion, are also united by the voco-performance with which they approximate animal vocalisation as the source of logos.

Who and What Holds Back Reforms in Croatia? – The Political Economy Perspective

Author(s): Valentina Vučković,Ružica Šimić Banović / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2021

Keywords: reforms; Croatia; clientelism; coalitions; corruption; economic freedom;

The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors affecting reform patterns in Croatia in order to identify the main reasons for the (missing) reform success so far. The focus is on the analysis of the political system, especially on government fragmentation as one of the main features of proportional electoral rule and clientelism. In addition to political variables, economic factors are analysed as well. The obtained results show that reforms in Croatia were implemented during crises, that coalition governments are not conducive to reforms and that clientelism and corruption present significant obstacles for reform implementation in Croatia. Moreover, the results show that political cycles also have a significant effect, with reform activity slowing down as elections approach. This article contributes to the burgeoning debate on reform implementation (in the post-socialist societies) from the political economy perspective.
