ON ASPECTUALIZERS IN ENGLISH. A CORPUS-BASED APPROACH

ON ASPECTUALIZERS IN ENGLISH. A CORPUS-BASED APPROACH

Author(s): Tünde Nagy / Language(s): English

The present work offers a semantic analysis of aspectualizers and their non-finite complement constructions (to infinitive and -ing) in English. It can be considered innovative in the respect that it defines aspectualizers and their complements as constructions that are themselves part of a larger macro-construction. In this regard, the analysis at hand can be considered a constructionist one, combining elements of constructional approaches (mostly Goldberg (1995, 1997, and 2006) with that of cognitive grammar (Wierzbicka 1988, Langacker 1991, etc.) and the theory of presupposition and consequences (Freed 1979).

The Life and Work of Károly Apor (1815–1885)

Báró altorjai Apor Károly (1815–1885) életének és munkásságának vázlatos bemutatása

Author(s): Róbert Oláh-Gál / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: Károly Apor; life and work; Therezianum; King Ferdinand 5th; vineyard; 19th century

This book presents Baron Károly Apor’s life and work. Bibliographic data are presented about the famous man of culture and legal expert.Károly Apor was born at 11th December 1815 in Turia de Jos, the Apor family’s ancestral home. He started elementary school from 1822 in Baia Mare and continued his studies in 1824 at the Therezianum Vienna, as a protégé of King Francis, where he studied law. In Therezianum he studied until 1835 when King Ferdinand 5th allowed him to continue his studies at the Academy of Law in Bratislava. In 1838 he was assigned to Târgu-Mureş and in July 1839 he passed comprehensive examination of case law. In his initial enthusiasm, he joined the National Guard, but in November 1848, when General Gedeon took Târgu-Mureş, Károly Apor fled to Vienna and waited there the end of the revolution. At the end of 1849 he returned to Transylvania with Count Imre Mikó. Later he was appointed as president of the Supreme Court of Târgu-Mureş, a position he had until his death. He died on 31 October 1885 in Târgu-Mureş and was buried in the Tofălău vineyard according to his wish.This book shows that Apor was a bibliophile of value, but he was also a prominent landowner: he produced excellent wines, and he was also one of the first photographers in Transylvania.

The Teaching and Learning of Romanian as Non-Native Language. An alternative of applied linguistics

Predarea-învăţarea limbii române ca ne-maternă. O alternativă a lingvisticii aplicate

Author(s): Erika Maria Todor / Language(s): Romanian

Keywords: national minorities; teaching; learning; Romanian language; non-native language; skills and competencies

The present book is addressed to the teachers and would-be teachers who contemplate on the efficiency of the teaching-learning process in the context of studying the Romanian language in the schools and classes of national minorities, especially in those of the Hungarian minority. in these six chapters we approach social and linguistic moments of the reality, both in practice, focusing on its contrastive grammar connotations, and in its psycho-pedagogical relevance, as it is present in the schools. at the end we offer our readers a detailed list of definitions of the special notions used in this field. in the present book we used the notion “Romanian as non-native language”, first of all, in order to describe the phenomenon by means of a short and easy to use term, which also reflects the complex existence of the bilingual person in the context of institutional language acquisition in school context, preponderantly in schools with teaching language of national minorities. These subjects are from different, mostly monolingual background but also from bilingual or multilingual families. The term we use also has the advantage of attracting attention to the special character of the phenomenon, reflecting the fact that is has a very differing status from foreign languages. in this context the present text describes the optimal skills and competencies of any efficient teacher, clarifies basic notions and definitions of the institutional bilingualism, this latter's forms and errors and mistakes caused by different aspects of bilingualism, including their solving too. The text also refers to the outstanding didactic value of linguistic code switching. it is worth mentioning how bilingualism creates and constitutes meaning and sense, and what effects it has on the non-native language related reading and expressing actions. I consider that the present writing may constitute a premise to the elaboration of new textbooks, academic writings, and i hope the ideas formulated here will offer creative points of reference in the education and formation of teachers and would-be teachers.

Turning points and defining personalities in the study of subsurface resources of Transylvania before 1920

Fordulópontok és meghatározó személyiségek Erdély altalajkincseinek megismeréstörténetében 1920 előtt

Author(s): Ferenc Wanek / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: subsurface resources; Transylvania before 1920; history of natural resources and mining;

This volume is an attempt to paint a picture of the history of natural resources and mining in Transylvania, through a few selected examples arranged in a chronological order, up to the point in time mentioned in the title. It relies on a scientific approach, but also tries to give an account that is easy to read and understand.Some of the chapters identify the locations of medieval mines that were known from documents but had no precise geographic positions; others call the attention to the fact that, taking into account their characteristics, some modern-day mines were also active during medieval times. The book guides the reader through the adventurous history of learning about the geology of energy resources (natural gas, coal) in Transylvania. In the process of doing that, it also highlights ideas and concepts that were introduced here for the first time in the history of science, such as the industrial use of natural gas, pioneering research on single-celled fossils, and the clarification of stratigraphic controversies through the use of paleontology. The effect of the scientific, economic, societal, and political context on the exploration and exploitation of raw materials – and mineral waters as well – is also discussed.By describing the work of a few outstanding Transylvanian geologists (e.g., Franz Herbich, Gyula Halaváts, and Mór Pálfy), we also highlight that, despite all the difficulties of doing scientific work in a small and often disadvantaged country, thanks to these scientists, this region was able to keep up with, or even lead, the scientific advances in Europe and the rest of the world. In some cases we also discuss their contributions in areas outside of the geosciences.By summarizing and cataloguing those publications of these researchers that are relevant to Transylvania, we also hope to aid further studies in the history of geoscience in this region.

Excel for Economist and Engineer Candidates

Excel közgazdász- és mérnökjelölteknek

Author(s): Levente Filep,Edit Garda-Mátyás,Róbert Oláh-Gál / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: Excel; everyday economics; engineering calculations; basic programming with VBA

Excel is one of the most popular programs, perhaps even more useful and familiar than Word. It is relatively inexpensive and easily accessible. It can be used in everyday economics (shopping), household, business, education, and engineering calculations. In the household: it can be used to record our purchases, expenses and income, to track our water and gas consumption, to track public spending, to keep track of our daily work, schedule, etc. Last but not least, Excel can be used in teaching math elements, basic statistics, financial fundamentals, research methodology, basic database management, and also basic programming with VBA. The current course notes were made to justify these statements.Within the Faculty of Economic, Socio-Human and Engineering Sciences in Miercurea Ciuc, this lecture note is the basis of three core disciplines: Fundamentals of Informatics, Informatics and Applied Informatics II, and also the base material for the course Economic Informatics, in which we mainly teach VBA and the economic applications of Excel.We also respectfully recommend this material to high school students as it contains basic knowledge about Excel required for graduation. Understanding this material requires almost no prior knowledge unless the reader wants to gain knowledge in statistics or research methodology. At the same time, being intended for candidates in economics and engineering, it is natural that most examples are related to these topics.At the end of this material, we also try to provide some basic programming knowledge and present an interesting and innovative graphics application. This section is written primarily to assist students in work for scientific communications or undergraduate papers.

Algorythmics: technologically and artistically enhanced computer science education

Author(s): Zoltán Kátai / Language(s): English

Keywords: computing; educational systems in the 21st century; AlgoRythmics project; algorithm visualization environment; contextualization; sorting algorithms by professional dance choreographies;

A major responsibility of educational systems in the 21st century is to prepare future generations for the challenges involved with the increasing computerization of our everyday lives and to meet the demands of one of the fastest-growing job markets: computing. The goal of our beloved AlgoRythmics project is to promote computing education for all by taking into account the key elements from the most relevant computational thinking definitions. For this purpose, we created an engaging algorithm visualization environment. The environment is built around a collection of interactive dynamic visualizations illustrating basic computer algorithms. Making computing education attractive for different categories of learners is a challenging initiative. A possible approach might be contextualization. The AlgoRythmics learning environment has been designed along this approach. Since music and dance are relatively close to most people, this environment visualizes searching and sorting algorithms by professional dance choreographies (folkdance, flamenco, ballet). The “dance floor” we created is an interactive and intuitive user interface which guides learners from the dance to the code. From the perspective of the teaching-learning process, the most important features of the environment are its unified, artistically enhanced, human-movement-effect-enriched, multisensory, and interactive character. What is this book about? About the AlgoRythmics universe. Of course, we did not dream of a complex teaching-learning tool and the attached didactical methods overnight. The AlgoRythmics project has its own particular history. Through this book, we invite the reader to accompany us as we virtually relive the AlgoRythmics adventure.

INTERMEDIAL ENCOUNTERS

Intermediális találkozások

Author(s): / Language(s): English,Romanian,Hungarian

Keywords: intermediality; film; in-between; cinema;

Intermedial Encounters is a collective volume written by film scholars honouring the uniquely homogenous academic work centred on Ágnes Pethő’s concept of intermediality. The chapters of the book have been written by scholars, artists, colleagues, and disciples who share Ágnes’s passion for intermediality and for cinema in general. They have been invited to contribute either a personal account of their own relationship with the academic field of intermediality or a film analysis of their choice (not necessarily related to the phenomenon of intermediality). Therefore, the volume creates a cluster for new research developments by those who founded or joined the academic discourse around this specific concept. The book is divided into sections representing different specific areas within this discourse and also corresponding to different stages in Ágnes Pethő’s research. Embracing the idea of hybridity and of in-betweenness, there are photo essays included between the sections, and articles are richly illustrated with film stills and other types of images, creating the intermedial bond between intellectual reflection and affection. In this way, the book attempts to offer a multisensory experience in itself. After an introductory part presenting Ágnes Pethő’s career path, the section Personal Encounters consists of subjective accounts of her inspiring presence written by a former student, a visiting professor, and a scholar of intermediality (Nándor Jakab-Benke, Anna Geréb, and Jens Schröter). The section title An Archaeology of Intermediality is inspired by Ruggero Eugeni’s article on the origins of intermediality, while it also alludes to intermediality preceding cinema in pre-historical art described by Jürgen E. Müller, to Michael Haneke’s metacinema (Mircea Deaca), or to Derrida’s term cinécriture contributing to the discourse of intermediality, as Jolán Orbán suggests. The section Cinema In-between Media points to the first chapter from Pethő’s book Cinema and Intermediality. The Passion for the In-Between (2011, republished in an enlarged edition in 2020), in which intermediality is placed in a philosophical and phenomenological perspective. From this perspective, this section is preoccupied withdifferent inscriptions of one medium into another: the electronic vocabulary of video (Yvonne Spielmann), still photographs, and asynchronous voice-over in Hollis Frampton’s structural film (Susan Felleman), early Italian cinema’s return to the pictorial (Ivo Blom), and even the presence of silent cinema in Hungarian ekphrastic poetry (Orsolya Milián). The section Intermediality and Authorial Reflexivity opens with an abstract, theoretical perspective on the specular affinities of cinema in relation to self-reflexivity and intermediality (Fátima Chinita) and continues with analyses of various films sustaining this approach, focusing on authorial presence and the relationship between film and literature (films by Hong Sang-soo, Feng Xiaogang, Piotr Subbotko, Federico Fellini, and 584 New Hollywood films are discussed by Teréz Vincze, Ying Zhu, Ewa Mazierska, and Zsófia Ferencz). The section The Allure of Painting in Cinema evokes Pethő’s seminal article written on Hitchcock as a “visual artist working on the media border of painting and cinema” and contains articles addressing the intermediality of painting and cinema as different ways to achieve immersion: by way of transgressing a picture’s frames into the cinematic world (Joachim Paech) or as a way to get immersed in a painting through cinema (Brigitte Peucker), intermedial transgressions between painting and cinema are also discussed in film analyses by Judit Pieldner and Katalin Turnacker. The sections Screens of Memory in Post-1989 Romanian Cinema and The Poetics and Politics of Intermediality in Hungarian Cinema recall the recent collection edited by Pethő: Caught In-Between. Intermediality in Contemporary Eastern European and Russian Cinema (2020) and contain discussions of two national film cultures in geographical vicinity but advocating different film aesthetics. The authors of these studies are film scholars (Andrea Virginás, Christina Stojanova, KatalinSándor, Mónika Dánél, Gábor Gelencsér, Miklós Sághy, Balázs Varga) who contributed greatly to the interpretation of Eastern European cinema, and now they demonstrate how an intermedial approach can open new directions in understanding local cinema culture in broader theoretical and global contexts. Embodied Visions points to the conference and collective volume The Cinema of Sensations (2015), just as Scenes of the L’entre-images evokes the edited volume Film in the Post-Media Age (2012), while the section The Real and the Intermedial echoes the title of the 2015 Cluj-Napoca conference. Recent currents of film phenomenology and film philosophy have had an impact on Pethő’s understanding of intermediality, and by channelling key notions such as embodied vision and haptic visuality, l’entre image, post-media age eventually led to a redefinition of the term and to the expansion of the research field. These sections show the methodological potential and the versatility of the aforementioned concepts not only in films but in expanded cinema, arts in general, and also in VR and new media experiments. The book closes with Ágnes Pethő’s curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and the conferences that she has organized.

A MŰVÉSZETI ÚTKERESÉS VÁLTOZATAI A ROMÁNIAI MAGYAR IDŐSZAKI SAJTÓBAN (1965–1975)

Author(s): Zsuzsanna Szuszámi / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: Hungarian periodicals in Romania; Utunk; Korunk; Igaz Szó;

My book follows the endeavours and path seeking in fine arts between 1965 and 1975 as reflected in the contemporary press, more specifically in the most important cultural magazines of the age, namely in the weekly publication Utunk, as well as in Korunk and Igaz Szó. The other main area of this book is the evolution of fine arts criticism in these magazines. As a result, the research contains an analysis of the mode of communication after 1965 and discusses how the fine arts content started becoming increasingly free in the above publications, which years saw the publication of the most fine arts-related writings, and, finally, how the slogans and obligatory content praising the party and the system found their way into the publications again after 1972. The book is followed by an Annex, containing four interviews made with Zoltán Banner, the period’s editor of the arts column of Utunk, Lajos Kántor, the period’s columnist at Korunk, and Zsolt Gálfalvi, the period’s assistant editor at Igaz Szó. The interviews complement the image of the age at the level of oral history, but they also contain important data regarding the press of the time.

Sociology of the Family

Családszociológia

Author(s): Zoltán Ambrus,Orsolya Gergely / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: traditional family; sociological theories; divorce; non-marital alternatives;

The book is structured in 14 chapters with concerns on the concepts and basic phenomena of the family sociology, presenting in a practical integrative vision the issue of family in its evolution and in the perspectives of changes that are taking place in the contemporary world. The definition of family, the interpretation of the concept is a complex assignment in the process of family study as informal group and as fundamental social institution. The analysis of the familial states and household types leads the reader to a more complex comprehension of the reality of family life. The presentation of sociological theories: interaction-based, structural-functional, evolutional and Marxist approaches offers a scientific frame for the study of the family. In continuation, we analyse the functions of the family and the possible causes of change in these functions. We have considered it adequate to introduce a chapter regarding the analysis of the evolution of the family, taking in consideration the sociohistorical aspects of the familial relationships. The traditional family, the life and characteristics of the traditional family represents an important theme of the book. The dimension of the family, the factors that influence this characteristic and the effects of a family’s size is presented from a functional point of view. The issue of the modern nuclear family is analysed by us in the context of sexual role changes and the dynamic of familial roles integrating important sociological aspect as the evolution of the relation between parent and child and as life cycles of the family. In a separate chapter, we take up the evolution of familial types in the contemporary world, taking in special consideration the evolution of the trends in the European Union. Analysing the 21st century’s family, we try to find out if family is in regress or it is a matter of a new familial legitimacy. We deal with the concept of marriage and divorce in the context of evolution in relationships, selecting consort, presenting different theories about divorce and non-marital alternatives. The sociological aspect of post-adolescence and the parental help offered to adult, youngsters represent a new challenge of the contemporary world. An important theme of the book constitutes the socialization of the family and violence in the family, presenting the characteristics of the primary socialization process in the contemporary family, interdependences and violent tendencies manifested in family. In an integrative concept, we are concerned with the family and the structure of the household, taking in consideration old and new studies as well, regarding this issue. Family planning and politics of the family in the contemporary world represents a distinct theme in our sociological analysis. We try to focus on the practical aspects of the family planning as pregnancy risks, unplanned pregnancy, the use of contraceptives and its efficacy, information and education aiming family planning. The practical aspects of sociological research of the family, the methodology of the research is analysed in close relation with the nature and type of the family issues, with the manners in dealing with this problems, as assistance and family therapy. The closure of the book focuses on the presentation of the socio-juridical aspects of the family, analysing the base forms of juridical protection of the family, legal regulation of matrimony, affinity and descent. At the end of each chapter, we offer the reader a short synthesis on the presented issues, a set of fundamental notions of familial sociology, as well as questions, issues and tasks for interpretation, terminology texts in Hungarian, Romanian and English. This totality with practical applicative value of the concerned themes aims a better understanding and utilization of the issues in familial sociology and assures an adequate motivational support to study the analysed phenomenon. The book is addressed, first of all to students, but we hope that it can constitute a useful informational source for everyone who is interested in the complex issues of family, in a better understanding and efficient handling of the matters and challenges that are raised by the family in the contemporary world.

Statistics. Theory and Practice

Statisztika. Elmélet és gyakorlat

Author(s): Gyöngyvér Bálint / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: statistics; sociology; SPSS; bivariate analysis; cluster analysis;

This course of statistics has been prepared mainly for sociology students and offers an introduction into both the theoretical bases of the discipline and into practical deployment of this discipline as well. It has been prepared with the aim of introducing to students simply, step by step, the most indispensable techniques of statistical analysis. this course, illustrated by solved examples and SPSS applications, guides us throughout the basic concepts employed in statistics (statistical population, variable, levels of data measurement), through the basic operations dealing with databases (creating, labelling, importing, merge, selecting cases, transforming variables), then moves to univariate analyses (frequency distribution, averages, measures of dispersion, skewness and kurtosis). Before discussing bivariate analyses, we summarize briefly in the third chapter the basic elements of both of probability theory and of statistical sampling. In the fourth chapter (Bivariate analyses), we consider types of relationships between two kinds of variables, namely between two qualitative, then a categorical and a quantitative, respectively two quantitative variables (contingency analysis, comparison of group means, correlation). The last chapter offers a general summary of multivariate analyses, then by the means of a practical instance leads us throughout the process of principal components analysis and of k-means cluster analyses in the SPSS. We have formed two of the basic messages of the present course already in the first subchapter: 1. the most considerable component of comprehending statistics probably may be practicing to apply these techniques (theoretical knowledge helps practice, however these skills can be achieved through an effective work) and computer programme packs provide a large support in this, respectively 2. mathematical methods cannot be applied mechanically, they require expertise (sociology knowledge): even the most elaborate statistical analysis cannot compensate for the errors committed in the planning of a research and the acquired results also can be utilized efficiently only with appropriate professional knowledge.

An Analysis of the Causes of Over-Qualification among Young Graduates in Transylvania

A túlképzettség okainak vizsgálata az erdélyi diplomás fiatalok körében

Author(s): Blanka Bálint / Language(s): Hungarian

Keywords: the social-economical structure of Romania; overqualification; job matching; Romanian graduates;

The political transformation after 1989 resulted in important changes in the social-economical structure of Romania. One of the major changes was the massive job loss, the drastic decline of the ratio of employed population together with a high unemployment. Parallel with those a rapid growth has started in attendance to graduate studies. The expansion of higher education hasn’t stopped since. In these conditions it is an important research area analysing the possibilities of employment for the graduate population. One of the important aspects of the problem is the so-called job matching, meaning the relationship between qualification and job description where the match depends on the qualification. One type of mismatch is the so-called overeducation when the employee has a higher degree than necessary for that specific job. In this thesis, I examine the question of overeducation among the graduate young adults in Transylvania, Romania. I use the rational choice theory as a starting point to analyse the mismatch between the qualification and job requirement. Using this paradigm is a new approach in explaining the causes of overeducation, and as a theoretical frame gives an opportunity to handle in aggregation all of the most important economical and sociological models and theories developed to explain the problem of overeducation. In this thesis I’m looking to answer the some questions like: to what degree can overeducation be explained by the differences in social capital existing among the graduate young adults. Does overeducation depend on the costs of job search? What role has the differing skill level of the graduate young adults on overeducation? Does differential overqualification exist? Is overeducation the same among the different specializations? In my thesis, I will examine if the phenomenon of overeducation is a temporary phenomenon or a persisting one in the lives of graduate young adults? Examining overeducation in accordance with the available empirical data brings up the necessity of considering alternative hypotheses in the cases of the graduate young adults in a post – socialist Eastern European country. In the case of the Transylvanian graduate young adults overeducation seems to be a risk aversion attitude and offers an alternative to unemployment. This assumption could give an alternative path for the research of overeducation among Romanian graduates.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVES

PERSPECTIVE DE DEZVOLTARE URBANĂ

Author(s): / Language(s): Romanian

Keywords: General Plan of Development; Miercurea Ciuc; economic system; SWOT analysis; demographic analysis; Cohort-Component Method;

This volume contains three background studies designed to underpin the General Plan of Development of the city Miercurea Ciuc. The first study aims at presenting the economic analysis of the city by elaborating the current situation analysis. The main objective was to develop an accurate analysis on the local economy, on the existing problems and relations within the local economic system. In addition to the secondary data, a field observation was also carried out regarding the situation of industrial districts and other economic activities. After analysing the situation, a SWOT analysis of the settlement was conducted, followed by the definition of the main strategic directions and the formulation of a strategic vision. Following that, three alternative development scenarios were formulated, among which the most viable one was chosen, partly integrating the other two. The second part of this volume presents the tourist town of Miercurea Ciuc. The study is based on the analysis of the inner areas of the municipality classified into four categories, according to their touristic potential. The main objective is to identify activities and projects proposed in these delineated areas of interest. Therefore, the study presents the objectives and proposed activities for six areas with a high or moderate interest in Miercurea Ciuc, and some local hazards that may affect the balanced urban and touristic development of that area. Part three of this volume is divided into three tests. The first part presents the analysis of demographic processes in Miercurea Ciuc. The demographic analysis presents the causes of population evolution (natural movement and migration), the changes in the population and labour force, and finally the data on housing. The second part of the sociology study presents the demographic projection of the city’s population in the period between 2002 and 2022. Calculations on the population growth were made by the application of the Cohort-Component Method, using a software programme that allows the simulation of arbitrary assumptions about factors that may influence population movements. The third part of this study provides a focus-group type of evaluation designed to present ideas and demands of the urban population regarding tourism. In historical times, Earth sciences, such as mineralogy, geology, cartography, or geography, developed within the geographical sciences, parallel with and in the neighbourhood of astronomy. Earth sciences in Hungary started to emerge in the 16th century, written mainly in Latin, Hungarian, and German languages, together with the related sciences. The first Hungarian-speaking geographical literature, and also the related natural science literatures as well, was the Hungarian Encyclopaedia (1635) from János Apáczai Csere.Pál Bertalanffi had finalized the first complete, fully Hungarian written geographical textbook by 1757.
