Enter Lear. The Translator's Part in Performance

Author(s): Anna Cetera-Włodarczyk / Language(s): English

Keywords: Shakespeare translations; Elizabethan theatre; King Lear; performance; Shakespeare

What part did translators play in the Polish history of Shakespeare translations? Did they look to Shakespeare only or lean towards the theatre by supplying scripts rewritten for their own time? Did they act as prompters, whispering words into the ears of the actors, or command the stage themselves to tamper with Elizabethan designs? The intricacies of the Polish theatrical reception of King Lear, his triumphs, disappearances and spectacular comebacks, make the play a particularly interesting choice for investigating the relationship between translation and performance. Thus the stage history of the play runs parallel to the efforts of its translators: Jan N. Kaminski, Jozef Paszkowski, Maciej Slomczynski, Stanislaw Baranczak. What did they owe to Shakespeare, and what does our Shakespeare owe to them?

To the Rhythm of Poetry. A Study of Late Old English Metrical Prayers

Author(s): Monika Opalińska / Language(s): English

Keywords: Old English religious texts; Paris Psalter; analysis of Old English translation

Compilation of a group of Old English religious texts from the mid-11th century. The analysis includes versified psalms from the Paris Psalter and metric paraphrases of the liturgical texts Credo, Pater noster and Gloria Patri. The author focuses on the language and the metric structure of the poems, uses manuscripts, comparing the medieval record with the editorial interpretation. The publication shows to what extent anonymous Anglo-Saxon masters managed both to remain faithful to the content of the translated or paraphrased Latin works, and to maintain the formal features of an Old English poem.

Studium elementów gramatyki narratywnej w popularnonaukowych opowiadaniach Stanisława Lema Opowieści o pilocie Pirxie. Zawiera wnikliwą i nowatorską analizę podstawowych środków gramatycznych języka polskiego używanych w budowie tekstu narracyjnego i określających zjawiska tekstualne związane z odbiorem anatomii opowiadania przez czytelnika.Analiza została przeprowadzona w formie zazębiających się badań nad zasobem wykładników gramatycznej budowy tekstu, przyczyniających się do powstania spójnego, wielowarstwowego i bogatego pod względem artystycznym tekstu narracyjnego, takich jak: czas, aspekt, schematy składniowe, współrzędność i podrzędność składniowa, partykuły i spójniki oraz szyk zdania. Wielopłaszczyznowe ujęcie ukazuje wzajemne oddziaływanie literackich i językowych elementów, tworząc obraz sztuki narracyjnej Stanisława Lema i zarazem obraz struktury językowej polszczyzny.

Towards the Conceptualization of the Sphere of Interpersonal Relations in Amharic

Author(s): Ewa Wołk-Sore / Language(s): English

Keywords: język amharski; socjolingwistyka; pragmatyka językowa; grzecznościowe wyrażenia językowe; Cesarstwo Etiopskie; adresatywy

Keywords: Medieval; English Literature; Oral Literature; Middle English; Oral-Formulaic Theory; Sir Launfal; Erl of Tolous; Sir Trymour; Amis and Amiloun; Morte Arthur

Direct Measurement of the Gluon Polarisation in the Nucleon Using the All-pT Method at the COMPASS Experiment at CERN

Author(s): Marcin Stolarski / Language(s): English

Keywords: spingluon; polarisationneural; networks

The monograph documents a novel method of extraction of the gluon polarisation in the nucleon, presenting results from its application to data from the COMPASS experiment at CERN, in which the Physics Faculty of the University of Warsaw is engaged. The topic addressed in this publication is related to the so-called spin polarisation puzzle – one the fundamental problems of nucleon structure, which remains unsolved since 30 years. The author, besides the detailed discussion of the gluon polarisation method, describes the historical context of the spin measurements, the theory of deep inelastic scattering with polarised beams and polarised targets, gives details of the COMPASS experiment and discusses various nuances concerning the data analysis. The publication is a helpful study aid for students and physicists whose aim is to study the spin structure of the nucleon.

Lectures on Number Theory

Lectures on Number Theory

Author(s): Paweł Białynicki-Birula,Mariusz Skałba / Language(s): English

Keywords: local method; Gauss integersproperties of rings; prime number theorem; rings of integers

The book is intended as a manual for a half-year introductory course of number theory. The aim is to present the theory to the extent which is indispensable to every mathematics student, regardless of their future specialization. The target points include the local methods, the Quadratic Reciprocity Law, the Prime Number Theorem, unique factorization of ideals in rings of algebraic integers in finite extensions of~Q, units in the rings of integers in quadratic extensions of~Q, and decomposition of primes in rings of integers. The authors' main aim was to show that the beauty of number theory lies in the fact that on the one hand it enriches other domains of mathematics, and on the other hand it makes frequent use of their methods and results. Each chapter is complemented with problems, of different complexity. Some solutions and hints are given at the end of the book.

Римские республиканские монеты и их имитации с территории Украины

Roman Republican Coins and Their Imitations from the Territory of Ukraine and Belarus.

Author(s): Kyrylo V. Myzgin / Language(s): English,Russian

Keywords: Roman coins; Roman Republican coins; numismatics; numizmatyka; monety rzymskie

The book contains the analysis of coin finds from the territory of present-day Ukraine and Belarus, but only those found outside the borders of the antique world, excluding the Greek and Roman towns in the Northern Black Sea Coast region. The key objective of the study (prepared within the Coins of the Roman Republic in Central Europe project implemented 2014–2017 at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw) was to settle the most important questions concerning the finds – of the date, routes and source areas of their influx. The book consists of two parts: analysis of the coin finds and their catalogue. Although the author often had to draw his conclusions from indirect data, where information about the archaeological context of a coin find was, at best, limited, he managed to recognize the main trends in the distribution of the numismatic material in the territory under analysis.

Keywords: ancient Egyptian ; faienceTell Atrib; Athribis; Ptolemaic periodtechnology of Ancient Egypt

Egyptian faience of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods has not enjoyed the same degree of research as the earlier material. This volume, which presents an analysis of faience object from Polish-Egyptian excavations at Tell Atrib, ancient Athribis, will help to remedy this problem.Excavations in Tell Atrib revealed traces of local production of faience objects. They include vessels, figurines, amulets and ushebti recovered from three major strata dated to different phases of the Ptolemaic period. Their provenance from securely dated contexts allowed for tracing typological changes occurring over time, which is of particular importance for studying the history of local faience production. These observations give grounds for analyzing the sources of influence and inspiration of local artisans. Distribution of faience finds at the site gives certain clues as to the role of these objects in everyday and religious life of the inhabitants of the ancient city.PartnerzyKsięgarnia Uniwersytecka LIBERAzymuttel. 703 700 112

Glamour, femininity, performance. The actress as the object of desire

Glamour, kobiecość, widowisko. Aktorka jako obiekt pożądania

Author(s): Agata Łuksza / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: glamour; femininity; show; actress; sensuality; burlesque; musical comedy; variety; studies of a theatre

The monograph concerns two fields of studies of a theatre: woman’s studies and popular genres’ studies. The author analyses a double relation between the femininity and the performance using the category of “glamour”, understood as a visual code rising in the city milieu. This code generates and controls the spectators’ desires. The author examines not only the historical genres (in which the actress was glamorized and as result the new model of femininity “glamour” was shaped) but also the attempts of impeachment of this model made in the theatre from the second half of the 20th century.

This book presents the petrological and chemical features of high-Al chromitites associated with serpentinized ultramafic rocks of mantle origin in the Jordanów-Gogołów and the Braszowice-Brzeźnica massifs (Sudetes Mts., Poland) as well as the metamorphic processes of chromian spinel and associated silicate minerals. Collected data suggest that models of the Sudetic ophiolite formation have to be revised. The monograph is intended for experts and students in the field of Earth sciences.
