The analytical report is based on the result of scientific and research work “The contradictions of identity in Ukraine and the ways of their regulation in the context of civil consolidation policy of the Ukrainian nation / Analytical report” that had been carried out at the I.F. Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2015. It carried out a generalized analysis of the contradictions of identities in contemporary Ukraine (motives, displays, risks), public and legal support to prevent conflicts and mechanism functioning; socio-economic realities as a factor in strengthening of the conflictogenity identities potential in Ukraine; democratic values as a basis for the consolidation of nation; destructive religious and confessional influences; mechanisms to consolidate the nation in the terms of changes in the configuration of ethno-national “identity matrix” of the Ukrainians; civil organizations and political parties as instruments for levelling of the identity contradictions and consolidation of nation.

This is the first book, devoted to the life, activities and tragic fate of Oleksandr Shumskyi (1890-1946). The former socialist-revolutionist, later the leader of the “Borotbists” party, and then a member of the Bolshevik party, People's Commissar of Education in 1919 and 1924-1927, he remained a Ukrainian patriot, and often went “against the flow” of official policy. It is not uncommon for the communist regime to have made it, quite by the definition of his contemporaries, rather non-human: at first, O. Shumsky was sent for a ten-year exile, and then he was brutally murdered. The publication contains unique documents of the communist secret services, as well as the other archival documents never published. The book is intended for a wide range of readers.

In 2014, 360 years have passed since the conclusion of the agreement between the tsarists and Cossack governments in Pereyaslav (now Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky), which was a turning point in subsequent historical processes that have long been observed in the mutual relations of the two peoples. This event also influenced the geopolitical situations both in the Eastern European region and throughout Europe. Today, it is possible to build different models for options, if there were the further fate of Ukraine and Russia in the event of changes in the policy of Bogdan Khmelnitsky and his successors after the mentioned action. But history does not know the conditional way, and everything happened as it happened. The peripetias in the relations that began in 1654, were reflected in the events, recently quite tragic, at the beginning of the XXI century.
