Sokol Brno I 1862–1938: History of the elite Moravian association

Sokol Brno I 1862–1938: Dějiny elitní moravské jednoty

Author(s): Milena Strachová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Sokol association; Brno; Czech gymnastics; sports in Czech Republic; 1862-1938;

The monograph deals with the formation and evolution of the oldest Sokol association in Moravia. It describes the difficult beginnings of the incipient Sokol movement in a Germanised environment where disputes and animosities hindered development of the Czech gymnastics movement. The resulting picture is much more complex than the general public knows. The author analyses the importance and role of gymnastics and sports in Czech national emancipation. The book covers the period from the 1860s to 1938. In her text, the author also offers a glimpse into the social, ideological and political developments in Brno – known then as the “Moravian Manchester” – in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book contains photographs and citations from contemporary sources.

Space and its habitation: A view of space in the works of Marie Noël, Suzanne Renaud, Christiane Singer and Sylvie Germain

Prostor a jeho obývání: Zobrazení prostoru v díle Marie Noëlové, Suzanne Renaudové, Christiane Singerové a Sylvie Germainové

Author(s): Václava Bakešová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Poetry of Marie Noël; Suzanne Renaud; Sylvia Germain; Christiane Singer; Geocriticism; spatiotemporality;

The publication summarizes the research results of various types of space in the literary works of four Christian inspired French authors, M. Noël, S. Renaud, C. Singer and S. Germain. Their literary texts cover the whole of the 20th century and show diversity in approaches to space, but also a difference in the literature of 1st and 2nd halves of 20th century. Methodologically, it proceeds from the phenomenological view of G. Bachelard on the intimate space of the home, through the open and sacred space according to M. Eliade's study, towards the geocritical analysis of the space, based on the almost unused B. Westphal's theory of geocriticism. The study of space shows that literature can not be separated from the outside world, on the contrary, it contributes to its better understanding.

Limits to Darwinism

Meze darwinismu

Author(s): Jiří Vácha / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: Darwinism; Neo-Darwinism; evolutionary biology; natural world; natural selection and adaptation; neutralism; evolution of individual development; epigenetics; structuralism;

Darwinism claims to be a complete theory of biological life, including human life. It has a significant effect on the self-concept of contemporary humans and their worldview. In his unique book, Professor Emeritus of Masaryk University, physician and philosopher Jiří Vácha summarizes the current scientific critique of Darwinism, and also expands the whole problem by the notion of "consciousness" as the most specific feature of live beings. In addition to the evolving physical aspect of organisms, their experiential aspect has evolved too, and Darwinism does not take that sufficiently into account. Modern natural science, following in the footsteps of Descartes' mechanism, has a priori closed the door to this fundamental problem and has had to make way for philosophy and its interpretation. Despite its broad scientific scope, the book is surprisingly readable, the author explains complex things in clear and simple language.

Analysing Genre: The Colony Text of UNESCO Resolutions

Analysing Genre: The Colony Text of UNESCO Resolutions

Author(s): Olga Dontcheva-Navratilova / Language(s): English

Keywords: international law; Conventions; Resolutions; UNSECO; Colony text; genre;

This book analyzes the genre of resolutions in an attempt to explain the specific way discourse is constructed and interpreted in the context of intergovernmental institutional interaction practiced by the UNESCO discourse community to achieve its specific communicative goals. Undertaken primarily from the viewpoints of sociolinguistics, stylistics and pragmatics, it uses the genre analysis approach and aims at the study of text typology and stylistic variation in association with the contextual constraints on discourse production and processing. The corpus-based study is carried out from both the synchronic and the diachronic points of view in an attempt to characterize a genre and its development over a sixty-year period. The diachronic research focuses on the development and changes the genre has undergone from its implementation in the United Nations system up to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Since the `Resolutions' volumes are categorized as an instance of the colony text type, their structure and distinctive features are related to the specificity of this kind of written discourse. The investigation into the current state of the genre explores the generic structure of resolutions and their style markers. The analysis of the style markers of the genre is related to the major strategies used to build up discourse coherence and to some pragmatic issues, such as speech acts and politeness phenomena.

Coherence in Political Speeches

Coherence in Political Speeches

Author(s): Olga Dontcheva-Navratilova / Language(s): English

The monograph studies coherence in political discourse from the perspective of discourse analysis, pragmatics and genre analysis. The investigation into coherence strategies in the genre of opening addresses is performed on the material of speeches delivered by Directors-General of UNESCO. The analysis focuses on interpersonal meanings conveyed by modal expressions, personal pronouns, evaluative lexical units and signals of dialogicity. These interpersonal meanings are interconnected with patterns of thematic progression, continuity of referents, temporal anchoring of the discourse in the moment of speaking, and numerous cohesive signals. The author points out that the choice of coherence strategies is interwoven with persuasion strategies which the politicians use in relation to their communicative intentions and the rhetorical structure of the genre of opening addresses.

Conjunctive Adverbials Viewed as Pragmatic Markers in the Genre of Research Articles

Author(s): Irena Hůlková / Language(s): English

Keywords: research articles; conjunctive adverbials; genre; pragmatic markers;

This study looks into the occurrence of conjunctive adverbials (CAs) in the genre of research articles. The theoretical part first introduces CAs along with their main properties. Subsequently, the concepts of cohesion and coherence are investigated and since CAs are viewed as pragmatic markers, the concept of pragmatics is also examined. The last chapter concentrates on the demarcation of the general terms register and genre and then singles out two fields crucial to the present investigation: the register of academic prose and the genre of research articles. The three chapters of the analytical part deal with my research findings. The corpus analysis is based on a research article corpus of 100 published papers (50 representing soft and another 50 hard knowledge fields) in 10 academic disciplines (5 representing SKF and the other 5 HKF). The qualitative method is used in connection with the investigation of semantic roles of the CAs and their pragmatic implications, and the quantitative method helps to analyze the frequency of occurrence of individual semantic categories as well as particular CAs. This occurrence is analyzed not only in research articles as a whole, but also in their individual sections such as Abstracts, Introductions and Conclusions. The distribution of CAs in terms of their syntactic functions (i.e., the position(s) they take up in a clause) is also looked into. Realization forms of CAs are examined too.

Sous les pavés, le noir!: Le roman noir dans la France post-68

Author(s): Marcela Poučová / Language(s): French

Keywords: France; post-1968; crime fiction; literature;

This dissertation focuses on French crime fiction after 1968 and, in particular, one of its forms – roman noir. It analyses how this genre reflects contemporary French society and its position and role within it. In the second part, based on a selection of novels, the author specifies a number of themes which she finds are characteristic for the crime literature of this period. As a result of the analyses carried out in both parts of the thesis, the conclusion drawn is that French crime fiction after 1968 mainly represents the opinion base for the generation strongly influenced by the ultra left wing ideology of the May '68 riots. Subsequently, the genre has enabled this generation to disseminate its ideals and has presented the means for social and ideological criticism of French society.

Waste-to-Energy in the Danube Strategy Region: Challenges and Prospects

Author(s): Colin Kimbrell,Jitka Kuncová,Jan Osička / Language(s): English

Keywords: waste; energy; Danube region; strategy;

This study presents the current state and main challenges for the development of the waste-to-energy (WtE) industry in the countries of the Danube Strategy Region (DSR). Waste-to-energy systems constitute a broad range of technologies for converting various types of waste either directly into electricity or heat or into a fuel for subsequent use. These technologies, furthermore, are dependent on complementary systems and services, in particular waste management. WtE is thus a complex topic overlapping with other prominent issues, such as sustainability, resource security, and the circular economy. The study provides a general overview of WtE technologies and associated systems, presents a cursory look at relevant EU legislation and statistics, details the main challenges facing the development of WtE projects, outlines the situation in the DSR countries, and, finally, presents a case study of a selected successful project.

Special pedagogical diagnostics in education of individuals with physical disability

Speciálněpedagogická diagnostika somatopedická: Metodické texty k projektu MUNI 4.0. Pedagogická fakulta, studijní program Logopedie (Bc.)

Author(s): Dagmar Opatřilová / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: education; pedagogy; inclusion; physical disability; pedagogical diagnostics;

Limited and disordered movement or ability to move has an impact on the educational process and vocational training of the people with physical disability. It is not always possible to be educated at the place of living, because all schools have non barrier access and are not able to ensure optimal conditions for inclusive education. Immobility often means limited participation of pupil in some lessons, limits the choice of the leisure time activities and complicates independent movement (on a wheelchair) in the social environment due to the lack of the non-barrier access to pavements, shopping centres and cultural centres and offices. In some cases, persons with severe disability have limited life space and are often socially isolated. Together with the inclusive trends in the society it is necessary to create resources which enable to teachers, assistants and leisure time teachers to work with people with physical disability. The base of presented e-book is aimed on the support including the educational process and the aim is to summarise and present possible intervention and compensation. The studying text should make the orientation in the presented field easier and provide support to students and special needs teachers and to other specialists to solve the problems in the sphere of support of people with physical disability.
