Community Cultural Center and Time - Institutional Building and Public Transformation

Читалище и време - институционално съграждане и обществена трансформация

Author(s): Maria Kisikova / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: community center; chronicle; institutional development; historical transformation

This text offers a viewport into the life of a community center, traced over a relatively long time span in view of the history created for our sake by the authors of the institution’s Chronicle. Creating a chronology of events and goings-on is a special kind of task, intricately connected to a keen historical awareness and a sense for the significance of the time and space we’ve lived through and in. Yet, crafting such a text is also essentially guided by administrative rules, because ever since the latter part of the 1920s, with the validation of the Law for National Community Cultural Centers and the modal statute, it was proposed that an institutional chronicle be maintained as part of the administration and documentation of the community center. In the following decades, the reasoning for keeping the Chronicle changed, but the expectation that it be maintained was still there. My approach toward the textual materials assumes the principles of established theory in the field of the social sciences, stemming from the empirical data, and building analytical models and defining schemas on this very basis. The selected research approach has met the criteria of two crucial principles of anthropological studies - specific cultural phenomena must be studied according to their inherent properties, and random comparisons (in both time and space) must be reduced to a minimum. In its final stages, the proposed research clearly reveals its insufficiency, but the latter can be compensated for by future readers and researchers who can offer different viewpoints, interpretative models, and theoretical understandings, thus adding relevancy to what has been presented here.

Life transitions in the (self-)transforming village: memory, identity, inheritance

Жизнени преходи в трансформиращото (се) село: памет, идентичност, наследяване

Author(s): / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: life transitions; generations; biographical strategies; village; festivity; identity

This book presents summarized results of the work on a research project entitled Life transitions in the (self-)transforming village: memory, identity, inheritance, funded by the National Science Foundation of the Ministry of Education and Science in the period of 2019 to 2024. Thе book reflects both the multidimensionality of the project’s problematic and the many faces of the Bulgarian village as a research object. The transformations in the Bulgarian village are explored through the transforming biographical and life experiences of its inhabitants. Our approach includes building an interdisciplinary methodology based on ethnological and anthropological methods, grounded theory and socioanalysis of self-inheritance. People living in the Bulgarian village are a heterogeneous group, composed of individuals with different biographical experiences, life strategies and everyday practices. Our research allowed us to see the different people we interacted with – young retirees, returnees, village citizens, digital villagers – as figures of transformation, who provide us with a different perspective on the socially active population in Bulgarian villages and on the ways in which they adapt their social experience accumulated in different social and biographical times and places, transforming times and places and becoming a driver of change in them.

Linguocultural Emblematics: Projections And Interpretations

Лингвокултурна емблематика: проекции и интерпретации

Author(s): / Language(s): Bulgarian,Russian,German

Keywords: Linguistics; Comparative Linguistics; Slavic Languages; Bulgarian Language; Russian, English; German; Cognitive Linguistics; Intercultural Communication; Language & Culture; Pragmatics; Sociolinguistics; Linguoculturology; Psycholinguistics

The collective volume “Linguocultural Emblematics: Projections and Interpretations. A Collection of Scientific Articles” systematizes the results of a joint Russian-Bulgarian study on the verbalization of cultural memory through precedent phenomena in the thesaurus of the younger generation in Russia and Bulgaria. The publication includes six long articles (over 20 pages each) and five standard full-length articles that explore the similarities and differences in the language of modern young Bulgarians and Russians; they form the primary target group of the research. The overall picture of precedent phenomena is complemented by texts related to Serbian linguoculture and language used as a control tool to determine whether the identified general trends are presented in many Slavic cultures or result from a coincidental overlap between Russian and Bulgarian. The precedent fund and cultural knowledge are analyzed using a wide range of texts from various genres, as well as associative and sociolinguistic experiments. Assumptions are made about the active processes within the language of the younger generation of speakers of the languages studied. Understanding these processes is essential for ensuring the adequate perception of different types of texts and facilitating effective cultural dialogue.Precedent phenomena are interpreted as linguocultural emblemas in their full diversity of projections and interpretations while precedentology is viewed as the theory of linguocultural emblems. The collective monograph marks the beginning of a new academic research endeavor of the Plovdiv School of Linguoculturology dedicated to a more comprehensive and in-depth study of linguocultural emblematics as an essential segment of cultural emblematics as a whole.
