Summary/Abstract: It is possible to criticize a specific ideology (e.g. the Islamist ideology of a particular movement). However, it is difficult to criticize religion as such, because it encompasses countless phenomena and does not exist in the real world in its pure form, as we imagine it. Criticizing the abstract concept of Islam is as absurd as criticizing “Christianity” or “Buddhism.” Muslims themselves conduct a wide range of criticisms of their societies, legal systems, social customs, and so on, from liberal, feminist, and even purely theological positions. Legitimate criticism avoids so-called essentialization.
