Summary/Abstract: Despite a much more complex geopolitical position than Georgia, Armenia has managed in recent years to pursue a pro-European policy and not to worsen relations with its strategic partner Russia too much. However, this approach, called the “policy of complementarity” by the Armenian Foreign Ministry, reached its limits this year. Yerevan had to make a clear decision between joining Western integration structures, driven primarily by the country’s economic interests, or integrating into the pro-Russian Eurasian Union, influenced by security interests. In early September 2013, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, after strong pressure from Russia, decided in favor of the Eurasian option.
