Summary/Abstract: This research presents the roots of the lobbying practice (formal or informal) in the EU as a relatively new phenomenon. It became widespread across the European institutions in the '80s and '90s as up until this time had been more common characteristic of the political landscape in USA. The author demonstrates the growing influence of the lobbyists groups which account for approximately 15000 people employed by around 2400 officially registered lobbyist organizations in Brussels. The paper offers an insight on the lobbying practice in its three dimensions – political, national, and institutional. It presents the public perception about it as well as practical examples of lobbying effects on the policy making in the EU.
