Summary/Abstract: The present article describes methodological inspirations, which may encourage students to read Treny (Laments). These reflections are based on the conviction that Jan Kochanowski is a myth in public discourse. Referring to the concept of Roland Barthes, the author remarks that a myth remains a myth if it is alive in a language. The author suggests beginning classes about Kochanowski’s literary output with solving riddles concerning his biography. Next, the author suggests a comparative study of Treny (Laments) and contemporary texts (the Internet entry at the social network and the novel by Inga Iwasiów Umarł mi. Notatnik żałoby) to demonstrate similarities in the way of speaking about death and grieving the death of our loved ones.
