Summary/Abstract: The authors and translators of articles in Polish eighteen-century press used, albeit with variable frequency, four types of note references: glossarial, content, bibliographic, and referential: internal. Glossarial notes explained the meaning of Polish and foreignlanguage terms, expressions, and geographic concepts. The most frequent in the press were content notes, which were used when related issues had to be explained or supplemented. In such references a more extensive commentary, frequently discursive, was printed by the editors, who provided their own remarks on the texts, explained historical characters, or published editorial information regarding new subject matter in the forthcoming issues. The least frequently used were bibliographic notes. However, if they were used, they resembled contemporary classical endnotes/footnotes. Referential: internal notes directed readers to fragments of the same article printed in other issues of a periodical, to different parts of a periodical, its supplements, or previewed the content to be published.
