Summary/Abstract: This paper sets out to explore the extent to which the subjective and context-sensitive phenomenon of evaluative language could be effectively analyzed in the institutional contexts of judicial discourse using corpus linguistics methods. After reviewing and comparing different conceptualizations of evaluative language (e.g. evaluation, stance, appraisal) and their corresponding methodological perspectives, this chapter presents and critiques a range of selected representative studies of evaluation in judicial opinions. The chapter ends with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using different corpus linguistics methods and suggestions for further research.
