Summary/Abstract: Founded in 1993, at the turn of the 20th century, the European Union faced two fundamental challenges: extending and deepening its integration. The aim of this article is to identify the main trends in both aforementioned processes influencing the European integration in the EU at the beginning of 21st century. Nevertheless, showing different pace of cooperation between the Member States (e.g. the economic and monetary union) is also important as well as analyzing the prospects for further collaboration in relation to the EU structures.
